The Pros and Cons of Cassettes

In this episode, we dive deep into the resurgence of cassette tapes and what they mean for indie artists and record labels. We explore the unique advantages that cassettes bring to the table, including their low production costs, creative potential, and the charm of physical media in an increasingly digital world. Presented by SMART NOISE - http://geni.us/smartnoise For labels, cassettes offer a lower barrier to entry, allowing for smaller runs, easier shipping, and a distinct DIY aesthetic with customizable J-cards, colorful tapes, and unique vertical artwork. We also discuss the nostalgia factor, which drives cassette culture, and how even big names like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish have adopted the format. However, cassettes come with their own challenges. Margins can be tight, as keeping the price below $10 while managing production costs can be tough. Few functional tape players exist, and the format lacks the mainstream retail support enjoyed by vinyl. Moreover, the dual-sided nature of cassettes adds creative hurdles for artists, forcing them to balance song lengths across both sides. While cassettes may not yet have reached vinyl’s level of popularity, they offer a distinct space for collectors and artists alike. Grab my FREE GUIDE to making cassette tapes: http://otherrecordlabels.com/tapes Join us as we explore whether cassette tapes are worth the investment for indie artists and labels—and what the future holds for this nostalgic, yet potentially reborn, format.

Winspear Records - (Barrie, Slow Pulp, Kevin Krauter)

Jared said something in this week’s episode that caught me off guard… He referred to the time period after release day as “Phase 2.”  We’ve talked a lot on this show about the importance of having a “post-release strategy” and not giving up after release day... But calling it “Phase 2” gave me a more detailed perspective on what record labels should be doing in the days and months after an album (or single) has been released. In this week’s interview with Winspear Records, Jared simply gives this over-arching strategy a name: “Phase 2”   Phase 2 is when you release bonus material, announce a tour, leak demos, or save a kid’s life at Niagara Falls and hope someone posts it on TikTok.,,   Phase 2 is just as important as Phase 1, maybe more important. This is when you double-down on your commitment to this release, regardless of how fans responded (or didn’t) on release day! Winspear releases subsequent EPs with original demos or acoustic versions. But they take this simple strategy one step further. They create unique artwork, different track listings, and they even rename the songs slightly to help change the listeners perspective that these aren’t just cast-off demos!   Listen to learn more! Heart Dance Records - (Eddy Ruyter, Sherry Finzer, Julia Hanney)

This week’s interview is with Heart Dance Records, a women-owned and run instrumental label with a mission to create peaceful music to relax, reduce stress, focus, inspire, grieve, heal, meditate and calm. In this episode, we tackle the question of whether it’s okay or not for music fans to treat music as a utility.  For a lot music, it’s an emotional, intimate connection we have with the songs and the albums we love… and we link that directly back to the artist who wrote or sang the song. But in some cases, music simply augments our mood or the environment we’re in.  The music becomes similar to a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine, a house plant, or comfy chair.  Is there a problem with that? Is that disrespectful to the artist when we passively utilize music?  Or is that something that was intended by the artist?   VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR RECORD LABEL RESOURCES: http://otherrecordlabels.com Heart Dance Records: http://heartdancerecords

How to Find an Investor for Your Record Label

Let's talk about how to find an investor for your record label. And more importantly, why someone might want to invest in your label...  This is actually a question that I’ve been asked a lot in our community. I understand that for a lot of you, this isn’t something that may interest you. Perhaps you like operating with your own resources, as an independent company. But for some of you, this is something that you’re interested in or at least want to know more about what it means to find an investor in your record label. I actually really enjoyed putting together today’s episode – because even though looking for outside investors hasn’t ever been on my radar – I feel like I have a lot more clarity about this space – and I think you’re going to find this helpful, regardless of where you are on your label journey. The Power of Lead Time

This week's episode is taken from the new book, Record Label Marketing Strategies. You can get it on Amazon now: http://geni.us/recordlabelmarketing and on our website: http://otherrecordlabels.com/book   Essentially, Lead time is the amount of time from the start of an album to its release date. More specifically, in marketing for a new release, I consider lead time to be the time between when the masters are complete, and when the album (or single) is released to the public. A lot of independent artists finish recording on a Saturday, master on a Sunday, and release on a Monday. There is something beautiful about the spontaneity of home-recording, and the ease of distribution that today’s technology provides. However, a negative byproduct of this immediacy is the failure of artists to give their audience the joy of anticipation. Additionally, giving time for the press and playlist curators will create more chances for your record to succeed. Indie Labels Need Advocates!

You can learn more about the folks at 3tone Music by going to http://otherrecordlabels.com/distro You can email my buddy Rupert at 3tone, [email protected]   Indie Labels Need Advocates.  In the same way that our artists need our support and cheerleading, labels need someone supporting us, and fighting for our position. I’ve been on the hunt for a digital distributor that is empathetic to the needs of small, independent record labels. Someone who is aware of our unique needs, and who can give us something different than what an indie artist can get for themselves with DistroKid, Amuse, or CD Baby.  This has been really important to me, to find someone who knows we exist and respects our existence, regardless of how small our catalogs or operations are. Some distributors are out of reach for smaller indies, and some don’t offer services advanced enough.  So, for the past 2 years,  I’ve been nurturing this relationship with a distributor called 3tone Music. You’ve probably not heard of them, aside from some of our conversations in our Facebook Group.
