Volunteering Is Back!

Geng Wang returns to the SnapCast. Geng Wang is the CEO and Cofounder of Civic Champs. We celebrate the return of Volunteering. Among the many things we discuss: Despite popular belief based on the census (old data from 2021), volunteerism is back and appears to be above pre pandemic levels.   Multiple data points show this including civic champs data (both actual anonymized data from our customers but also surveys we have conducted), volunteermatch data, and also Google search trends. In addition with individual giving continuing to go down, this gives organizations a great additional reason to lean into building up their volunteer programs.  Volunteering is the number signal for affinity or the willingness to donate  We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Emily Taylor, Principal of teenyBIG, returns to the SnapCast. Even the most impactful leaders have limitations. Eventually, their superhuman trajectory plateaus, or worse– drops off the cliff. Why You Shouldn’t Jump Into Your Next Strategic Plan

Emily Taylor returns to the SnapCast. Emily is the Principal of teenyBIG. We talk about why you may not want to jump into your next strategic plan. Many funders say you “should” have a strategic plan. But if you keep putting it off, it may signify you’ve encountered one of the four little-known reasons organizations fail at strategic planning. These challenges can limit buy-in from your team, make the plan seem unrealistic in the eyes of your community, and prevent you from getting funded. They guarantee your strategic plan remains untapped and on the shelf. Among the things we discuss: Identifying strategic planning success blockers within their organization Steps to resolving the biggest 4 reasons nonprofits fail at long-term planning Rethinking the Strategic Planning process to work for the organization vs. against it We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Affinity Programs, with Jenni Craig

Jenni Craig visits the SnapCast to talk about Affinity Programs, how to develop them, and how they benefit any philanthropic endeavor. Jenni has over fifteen years of experience in higher education, and is currently the principal at Affinity Makers, helping nonprofits to define and build their affinity programs. (Prior to Affinity Makers, Jenni's efforts have generated $2M in memberships and major gifts for Embry Riddle.) Among the things we discuss: Moves management tool to grow annual giving into mid-level donors, and mid-level donors into major gift prospects According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, mid-level donors make up 1% of an organizations total donor base, yet their contributions can make up 34% of total donor revenue Affinity programs strengthen a donor’s affinity for the organization, create reliable & consistent revenue, and develop a major gift donor pipeline Statistically, a $100,000 gift takes 18 months and 8-10 touchpoints between a donor and a major gift officer; affinity programs move the needle without the pressure and investment of ongoing one-on-one cultivation. Three necessities for a thriving mid-level donor program: 1. Touchpoint/communications calendar 2. Stewardship plan 3. Cultivation plan Whether an organization is looking to expand their donor base or grow current annual fund donors, affinity programs are a proven system for making these goals possible. Ahead Of The Curve with NSITE, with Jonathan Lucus

Jonathan Lucus visits the SnapCast to talk about NSITE, placing individuals who are blind or have low vision in great jobs, and partnering with corporations to make it easier to hire, onboard, and retain these individuals.  They offer training programs for workers who are seeking to get into (or back into) positions in IT, finance, HR... NSITE also works directly with businesses to assure that their new hire is a good fit and that they are seamlessly incorporated into their workforce. Many blind/low vision job candidates are well-qualified for a position, but are overlooked at a time when businesses are struggling to fill important positions. This attitude of “too difficult to incorporate someone who is blind or low vision into our workplace” really needs to change, because with technology today, it simply isn’t true. It throws up barriers to employment for an employee It is important to remember that the benefits of hiring a DEI candidate who has a disability goes well beyond meeting an internal DEI goal. In today’s world, diversity is a competitive advantage. Diversity of thought is incredibly important. Different lived experiences, different perspectives, different ways of working – these are all critical points in a workplace no matter what industry a company is in. Partnering with some of the best organizations in the business to assure that our classes are accessible for those who are blind or low vision such as APH, Google, Baker Communications, and Cisco. Association of Philanthropic Counsel

Melissa Brown hangs with the SnapCast for a second conversation about the Association of Philanthropic Counsel, a membership association of consulting firms that advise philanthropic (nonprofit) organizations. Upholding a strict code of ethics, APC is committed to ensuring that nonprofit organizations of all sizes can engage experienced, qualified counsel by strengthening the abilities, growing the resources, and expanding the knowledge and networks of our members. Our key talking points include: Code of ethics even "stricter" than AFP's - which is one reason for the referral and references pieces. For example, we commit to continuously updating our professional knowledge. In fact, that knowledge-gain is a key reason people join APC. Membership survey this year showed extremely high commitment to DEIA as an organization and also across members in terms of how they work with clients, such as for board development, strategic planning, and other services, plus in their fee structures, etc.   Discussions still underway but it looks like revised Values, Vision, and Mission will be very clear about the commitment we have to inclusion, diversity, equity and access within APC - as a membership association -- and in our firms. That commitment dates to the organization's founding in 1995. It will be much clearer, though, in our public-facing language. We try to live this commitment within the Association through how we seek vendors, our programming, including regular reading/discussion groups and who we invite as speakers, and in our firms based on how we work with clients, our hiring practices, etc. Within APC, we are also working on reviewing association fees and processes to be more accessible, too - stay tuned.

AFP's Study of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access

Melissa Brown of Melissa Brown and Associates visits the SnapCast to talk about the work she did with the Association of Fundraising Professionals to produce the IDEA Report (Assessment of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access). Key points include: Collaborative study with NINE organizations participating including African Americans in Development Offices; AFP; CFRE, Women of Color in Fundraising and Philanthropy; and more, with sponsorship from DonorPerfect. Bad behavior is too common - 34% of study participants reported experiencing some type of bias in the prior year. Bias from co-workers is far more common than from constituents -- and both are vastly underreported at the workplace, with maybe half of the people who experienced bias saying they notified a supervisor or HR staff member. We asked about far more than race -- including age, religion, bias based on physical appearance (tattoos, size, hair style), and so on. People leave jobs because of bias they have experienced. The NP sector is losing talent because in a high percentage of organizations people are either blind the realities, or possibly "just too nice" to admit this is a problem. To address bias: NP leaders must be strong in their statements and actions to show no tolerance. Provide time and funding (for facilitation ) of discussions that are themselves inclusive. Have a team of diverse (whatever that means where you are) staff and volunteers to create written policies and procedures. The report has links to some examples. Then be sure that EVERY staff member (and volunteer) is empowered to recognize, name, and take action in the event of bias. We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Strategic Planning and Mission Met, with Eric Ryan and Ricky Chilcott

Visiting with Eric Ryan and Ricky Chilcott of Mission Met. We talk about strategic planning, and how the Mission Met software helps nonprofits achieve their strategic goals. We also discuss the most glaring problems with nonprofit strategic planning, including these barriers to effective execution: The Executive Director Doesn't Champion the Planning Process Nonprofit Strategic Plans are Often Too Complex Planning is Viewed as an Event, Not a Proces We'll soon be giving away a copy of Mission Met: Proven Strategic Planning Guidance to Help You Build a Financially Secure and Impactful Nonprofit. This book frames strategic planning as a mindset for managing your organization with writing a plan as one key step in an ongoing cycle creating a structure for implementation and course correction as needed. Among the things we cover: I. Why strategic planning has a tremendous ROI: Helps to ensure that your plan is executed Keeps the team engaged and aligned in the planning process Elevates the importance of strategic planning overall for the organization Shows clear(er) history of what you've decided/tried and what worked/didn't Saves you time and political capital by reminding people about work to be done Is a break for the day-to-day project management software II. Advice with selecting strategic planning (or really any software) Be honest with yourself about what sort of power you need, want, and can afford Ask yourself whether it's useful to only have a limited set of people able to access (most software is price per-user) Ensure the platform you choose works the way you want Ensure the platform you choose is designed for your size of organization Be on the lookout for other support and resources that provide your team value We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Insider Giving, with Cindy Schipani

Mickey speaks with Cindy Schipani, Merwin H. Waterman Collegiate Professor of Business Administration & Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan. We talk about insider charitable giving, a "worryingly widespread" practice that is quite harmful. "Increasing civil and criminal penalties does not work as a successful deterrent if there is substantial ambiguity about what is illegal insider trading," says Schipani. "This ambiguity allows insiders to not only trade successfully but also to fend off attempts by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Justice Department to discipline them after the fact." Our conversation covers the things nonprofits should be aware of when processing gifts of stocks and securities. We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Putting your Nonprofit on the Map, with Pace PR

Mickey visits with Annie Scranton of Pace Public Relations to talk about nonprofit visibility and community building. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States. With so many nonprofits, many of them trying to achieve the same goal, it can be challenging to gain visibility, build your community, and increase your donor base if your audience doesn't even know you exist. Using her client Concern World Wide U.S. as a case study, Annie dives into why every nonprofit should build a thought leadership program for their organization, how they can achieve it, and how this strategy put Concern Worldwide U.S. on the map. We also discuss what PR strategies you can incorporate to help you successfully pitch yourself to the media, how to leverage local press to garner larger media coverage, and how this strategy can be used to build your community and increase your donor base. Live In Their World, with Robin Rosenberg

Robin Rosenberg, PhD, is a psychologist, CEO and Founder of Live In Their World. They use Virtual Reality to address issues of bias an incivility in the workplace. Robin's professional curiosity and clinical practice drew her towards the burgeoning field of virtual reality (VR) about 25 years ago. Robin followed the psychology of virtual reality literature for years, and then collaborated on research about VR. At the same time, the world was hearing about the frequency of young Black people being killed by white people, including police (2012 on), which led to a surge in focusing on challenges in diversity and Black Lives Matter. In turn this led some white people to say “all lives matter.” Through her work as a psychologist, she hypothesized that if white people could get enough of a sense of a Black person’s lived experience, they would understand what the statement Black Lives Matter really means and, in turn, wouldn’t say “all lives matter.” It wasn’t until early 2018 , when the Oculus Go VR headset was in the works and soon to be released, that VR technology made the idea feasible. That timing coincided with the rise of the #MeToo movement. Rob Hutter of Learn Capital had heard Robin’s idea earlier on, and in 2018 offered to fund a proof-of-concept study to see whether her idea could move the needle on gender bias and awareness. Designing Equitable Futures

On this week's Possibility Project: More and more critiques and conversations are capturing the elements of design that reinforce white supremacist, white dominant, ableist, and cis-heterogeneous norms. The future of our work as changemakers rests on how we reimagine, elevate, and co-create disruptively. So, let’s get into the nitty gritty of addressing how we might use speculative and disruptive design as tools to imagine and create possible futures, all centered around equity. These fantastic changemakers will lead us in this session: Katie Krummeck is an educational designer and an international thought leader in leveraging the power of design to drive change in the K-12 system. Christopher Rudd is an Instructor and Head of Community-led Design for the Chicago Design Lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology-Institute of Design (ID) where his work focuses on co-designing with community stakeholders. Funder and Power Dynamics, with Brittny and Nia

Brittny and Nia are the hosts of The Nonprofit Reframe podcast. The three of us talk about funder power dynamics: When used for good, funders can fuel real change (ie: board diversity) When used for...not so good, funders can really harm the sector and the organization's it's trying to support (ie: ridiculous reporting requirements for tiny grants) At worst, these power dynamics are exploited for the gain of the funder and not the societal good Things are changing and need to continue to change if we want to see nonprofits and their services scale impact We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Working With A Tech Consultant, with Emily Hicks-Rotella

Emily Hicks-Rotella is a Nonprofit Data & Tech Strategist. Her firm, Make Tech Work For You, helps nonprofits with their technology. We talk about her consulting practice, and how nonprofits can get the most value from a consultant: Make the consultant commit to documentation. You can ask to see templates of their documentation, ask them to brand it for your org, and ask them where they can do "embedded" documentation (right in your system, so you don't have to click a link that brings you to a one-pager somewhere else). Ask them to keep a parking lot of everything that you discuss, even if they aren't working on it right now or even ever. You don't want to lose those ideas in the shuffle. Don't hold yourself back when asking for your tech to do something. Dream big about it! Even if the consultant hasn't done it before or you aren't sure if the tech system can do it, the consultant should try to find out what is possible for you. Decide how rigid or flexible your needs are - some projects can be done to the letter based on a Statement of Work. But many can't, because things change and priorities shift. Have a clear process for discussing the direction of the work and priorities at many different touchpoints. We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Choosing A Tech System

Emily Hicks-Rotella is a Nonprofit Data & Tech Strategist. Her firm, Make Tech Work For You, helps nonprofits with their technology: Everything changes. We have to look at tech systems two opposing ways at the same time: Longevity and consistency with systems leads to more structured data and processes which can help with efficiencies and insights. BUT because everything changes you'll inevitably have to change parts of your system, connect to newer ones, or change it altogether at some point, so don't get too attached to what it is now. We talk about: Thinking about the whole ecosystem of data & tech at the org, and how a new system fits in Questions to start with for yourself and your potential vendors (more formally known as having Requirements) No system will address everything, so recognize there will be workarounds and improvements you'll want in the future We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Crime Stoppers of Houston, with Rania Mankarious

Rania Mankarious, CEO of Crime Stoppers of Houston, guests on the SnapCast. We talk about The Balanced Voice podcast, her work with Crime Stoppers, and the challenges she currently faces in the current climate. Among the topics we cover: Fundraising and the need for effective messaging and marketing. You can have the best product in the world but if the community doesn’t know it, get it and relate to it, you have no value. Know your audience. Nonprofits must speak to so many different groups - their donors, their volunteers, their team, their partners and the communities they serve. It’s an art and a science to understand how to message individually or simultaneously to all. Strategic planning is sometimes a myth. When it comes to fundraising, think broadly, think strategically and think ahead. It’s critical that NGOs are ready for whatever punches they take. Layering support and expanding support options is critical. Social media is the greatest tool in your tool belt. Not enough nonprofits use it to tell their stories or they use it only to post events or “flyers.” Social media and the virtual world can and should be your greatest entryway for the community to learn about the nuances of your work. "Remember the feeling of bumping into an old friend at an in-person conference? You two step off to the side in the conference center hallway and take a few minutes to catch up before moving on to see the keynote speech together or to go find new medical professionals to network with. Your friend maybe even pulls you into a new conversation and introduces you to other people they know. Too Many Cooks? (And Other Questions)

Bradley Kirschbaum, the founder of The Canopy Project, brings some excellent questions to the table that Mickey tackles with Dave Paule of Our Fundraising Search. This is the first of a series of special SnapCast episodes. Bradley asks: Is there such a thing as too many cooks in the kitchen with board members? Should board members have distinctly different expertise/experiences from each other? What level of commitment or accessibility should a board member need to contribute to the founders of a newly launched nonprofit to be considered? Consider the first few years are particularly full of questions and hurdles for a new startup. Is it a priority to have a (or a few) board members with experience in your particular sector? Is there a type of person that should be avoided from being added to the board? Our group has the daunting task of trying to improve a system that is not only different state to state, but also can have county to county management. Can Nonprofits Be Bootstrapped For Free?

Mickey speaks with Kate West, CEO of Your Fundraising Lab, and David Somerfleck, Founder and CEO of DMS Blue about the wisdom of using volunteers to staff critical organizational roles. Kate maintains volunteer-led organizations cannot grow or scale. Among the points we cover: 1.  Nonprofits need to distinguish between volunteers and unpaid staff and/or pro bono services for many reasons.  Volunteers don't work in their area of expertise, but do tasks that anyone could do or that the nonprofit has to train them to do.  This can be very valuable to a nonprofit, but volunteers are not considered to be as reliable, loyal or expert as staff (paid or unpaid). 2.  As an exercise, nonprofits could/should develop a budget that lists realistic salaries and fringe benefits for staff (whether paid or unpaid) and then offset these expenses with in-kind contributions as income.  This will help the board and donors (and staff) see the value of unpaid staff contributions. 3.  It's difficult to institutionalize volunteer-led organizations. 4.  When volunteers inhabit formal roles in organizations, corners are often cut including the development of job descriptions, personnel policies and other structures that guide professional conduct and development.  Unless it's somebody's role to develop these critical instruments, they are often remain unrealized.   We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Doing More With Less, with Ben Munoz

In 2006, Ben Munoz suffered a rare form of stroke called arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Unable to find the support he was looking for on the internet during his lengthy recovery, he created a patient community AVMSurvivors.org in late 2007 to find others like him. It rapidly became apparent that “community is the best medicine.” Ben soon co-founded BensFriends.org, with the sole focus of creating and operating safe, compassionate communities for people who need them (including patients and their families & friends). Among the things we discuss is how the organization’s culture is built around running lean and efficient. A core tenet is always considering how to do more with less--how to maximize impact for the patients in their support communities. Some of these approaches include: Asking for favors. Reading how-to books and doing it ourselves. Finding overseas talent and figuring out how to work across time zones. Avoiding sunk cost fallacy on failing projects. An Open Invitation

Hello! This is Mickey Desai, your host for the Nonprofit SnapCast, here with just a little bit of bonus information for you. We're going to run something of an experiment with the SnapCast. I'm inviting both consultants and nonprofit leaders, nonprofit managers, staffers, etc., to come to the table with their case studies or their questions. If you're a nonprofit professional with questions about your nonprofit, or you've always wondered how to do something differently with your nonprofit, I'd love to talk to you. I'd love to try to get you partnered up with me and possibly a third party consultant on a recording to discuss what's on your mind regarding your nonprofit. Or I'd just like to hear your questions so we can tackle them by way of doing something like "listener mail" with the Nonprofit SnapCast. I'm thinking we're going to try to do this maybe once a month. Similarly, I’m looking to consultants to bring to the table, maybe with some of their clients who can talk about their work as a potential case study with the Nonprofit SnapCast. My goal here is to bring more real-world data and real world questions to the kinds of things we talk about on a day to day basis. This will be something of an experiment that I hope you can join me on. I'll have more information on my website, that's NonprofitSnapCast.org. Otherwise, I hope you and yours are staying safe. We'll have another episode for you in a few days. Take care. We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. We welcome your questions and feedback via The Nonprofit Snapshot website.

Measuring Organizational Culture, with Matthew Martin-Hall

Matthew Martin-Hall returns to the SnapCast to talk about organizational culture and the work he's doing with Issac:Culture. Matthew writes: "Culture, as difficult as it can be to define, is amazingly malleable. Given the right level of openness and communication, organizational culture alignment can be leveraged into positive results for any organization of people; and the data proves this.   "Culture succeeds in defining the aligned values and mores of any organized group of people, and it is beneficial to always look at any organization as suffering from a culture problem. Culture is always changing and tends to ebb and flow with every aspect of the ever changing and chaotic business environment.  It’s important to understand that what we think of now as being okay for the workplace, may not be considered such, in the near-to-distant future. Organizational culture is crucial to define early on, because this is what will establish the rules of operating functionally in a group. No matter what that group is.   "It is absolutely crucial to not just understand that the most prevalent constant pertaining to culture, is change. The only manageable way to deal with this reality is to constantly change with it.  Culture shock is real and to be expected, for better and for worse, given any impetus, big and small in any organization. This could manifest by hiring a new employee, changing a communication standard, onboarding a brand-new project, or having to change general mores to adjust to a worldwide pandemic. Big and small splashes make ripples that can become monsoons without proper management.   "Standardizing and normalizing an open communication policy that fosters a collaborative and egalitarian environment is the best way to navigate these changes, as it’s what one doesn’t feel comfortable saying that can cause a festering sore that leads to outright derision." Talking Volunteer Management, with Corina Sadler, CVA

Corina Sadler, CVA, talks with the SnapCast about running a local government volunteer program that had capacity for up to 10,000 volunteers a year, and the circumstances that led to taking the volunteer effort down to 0 volunteers, overnight. Among the topics we touch on: During pandemic and downsizing, it's a mistake to get rid of volunteer managers. Volunteer managers should be more valued within their organizations. Volunteer managers should be using social media to tell their unique, professional stories. When COVID hit, the volunteer management community turned on their computers and said “Help!” in every language and the global network has responded with loads of online support for volunteer engagement professionals.  How professional associations need to pivot themselves to keep members and provide relevant benefits through COVID. Nourish Your Nonprofit Board, with Monique Salinas

Mickey talks with Monique Salinas of Ascend LLC about board relations and what it takes to nourish your nonprofit board of directors. Among the things we discuss: Most nonprofit organizations have a love/hate relationship with their Board of Directors. Why does this happen? Few nonprofits and their boards take the time to get the professional education/training that could remarkably improve their relationships and as result more successfully accomplish their missions. Ready To Board, with David Paule

Mickey talks with David Paule about Ready to Board, a program of Our Fundraising Search, recruiting and qualifying board members for nonprofits. David says: “In healthy, functioning nonprofits, the board of directors is the CEO's most valuable tool. Unfortunately, most boards do not understand the value of a board seat, and do not recruit board members effectively. Board seats are more valuable left empty than filled with poor performing directors. Ready to Board matches board members and nonprofit missions after vetting, training and certifying that they understand the duties and roles of a board member. “As we said in the last podcast, ‘Nonprofit’ is a tax status; it is not a license to lose money. Unfortunately, there is a misconception that the running of nonprofits is easier than for-profits when, they actually tend to be more difficult. Partially because of this misconception, the barriers-to-entry for boards of directors of nonprofits tend to be significantly lower than their for-profit counterparts. “Unlike for-profits, no one owns a nonprofit; instead they are held in trust by their boards of directors for the benefit of the community in exchange for their tax-exempt status. Few people understand this. As a result, nonprofits frequently have to contend with boards of directors that are populated with directors who are not qualified to serve on them. “When an organization hires us to recruit a board member, we vet them against a set of standards like any board candidate. But we also train them. For the board candidates, we put them through two, 3-hour sessions on board governance duties and obligations, and also on the best practices of the most effective boards. (Note: We will also provide this training for existing board members to help improve their effectiveness.)” We welcome support of the Nonprofit SnapCast via Patreon. Improving Nonprofit Employment Practices, with Kerry O'Brien

Mickey talks with Kerry O'Brien, Employment Lawyer & Labor Policy Consultant, about broad issues in U.S. Employment Law, and how nonprofits should make sure their employment policies match their values. Your nonprofit may not be living its values and may be communicating mixed messages that can contribute to employee disengagement and turnover, and yes, even lead to the lawsuits that well-done HR policy is meant to avoid. Among the things we discuss: Employment law in the U.S. is pretty harsh, ranking last out of 71 countries in how easy it is to fire someone (OECD data). Examples on how to change, or improve policies relating to employment practices, such as implementing a grievance process to off-set a harsh at-will disclaimer, enacting a severance pay policy, and explaining more about any employee benefits and how to access them. Architects Are Community Problem Solvers, with Marci Reed

Mickey speaks with Marci Reed, Executive Director, Architects Foundation at The American Institute of Architects about the organization’s focus on empowering a diverse, next-generation of architects. Among the topics we cover: Architecture is a profession held in high regard, although it’s mysterious to people who aren’t exposed to it either as a possible career, or as a client (think Seinfeld’s Art Vandelay). The nature of design thinking makes architects natural problem solvers – which can lend itself to social impact solutions through well designed buildings and communities – which is also the reason the profession needs to be diverse – so all voices are on both sides of the table. Architectural education is rigorous and expensive – architecture students who take out loans generally graduate with 25% more debt than the national average student loan debt. In 1968 Whitney Young challenged the profession to become more diverse; we have made some strides but it’s not enough. (https://www.50yearsafterwhitneyyoung.org/) We lost a generation of architects in the 2008 downturn; we could be facing a similar situation depending on how COVID plays out (architects can’t take their tests for licensure as testing centers have been closed). Voter Engagement in Nonprofits, with Katharine Hill and Tanya Rhodes Smith

Mickey talks with Katharine Hill and Tanya Rhodes Smith about Political Social Work, and the role all nonprofits should play in encouraging their stakeholders to vote. Our conversation covers: Nonpartisan voter engagement is legal, ethical and professional and central to building power in the communities that nonprofits work within. Communities with high voter turnout report greater well-being, and more resources and attention from elected officials. Presidential elections get most attention but voting in every election is critical. State and municipal elections have the lowest turnout yet the decisions are not less important. Issues like education, policing policy, housing, clean water, transportation, voting, healthcare, etc. all have state and local implications. Structural barriers to voting- voter id laws, felon disenfranchisement laws, confusing and complicated voter registration requirements, etc- are not accidental. They are intended to limit power and access. Social workers (and people who work in nonprofits more generally) should work to overturn these laws so that voting is more accessible Voting is an act of power yet most people don’t vote because they don’t trust the system or believe their vote doesn’t matter. Nonprofits can help change this narrative by asking people to vote and sharing why it matters. Nonvoters are more likely to be younger, less educated, less wealthy and nonwhite so their voice and power is diminished relative to voters who are more likely to be educated, white and wealthier. Integrating voter engagement into nonprofit settings isn’t hard to do- it can be built into activities and settings that already exist. There are great resources out there to support people who want to do this (Voting Is Social Work, Nonprofit Vote, TurboVote, Vote.org, League of Women Voters, etc).
