Aniqua Wilkerson, Fiber Doll Artist and Owner of My Kinda Thing (Pt.1)

Another wonderful In The Doll World show with my guest Aniqua Wilkerson, Fiber Doll Artist and Owner of My Kinda Thing.   (Pt.1)     www.inthedollworld.com What a great and purposeful doll journey Anqiua's shares with us, the educator is definitely in the house. As the third child of seven children, creativity was always encouraged in her house growing up and Aniqua always had dolls to play with, from the time she can remember, but did not have her first black doll until she was eight years old.In the conversation she shares that when she did get the black doll, she literally could not put it down, carrying it everywhere, protecting her doll but on some level, she believe she was protecting and caring for herself as well. She is a self-taught crochet artist. She became interested in crochet at around 19 years old, when her cousin found some old fiber arts books and has spent most of her adult career as a teacher, using art to be a more effective educator.   She loved teaching but was a little disheartened with the education system and wanted to so something else with art and so as she listened to her nieces and their friends talk about how they felt about themselves, and not always in a positive light, she wanted to embark on something that would help them to see how truly beautiful they were. We also get to talk about another proud moment in her life and how this excellent opportunity of working with Lion Brand and introducing Skien Tones came about. Aniqua uses crochet as a tool to teach and promote self-esteem in girls, particularly girls of color and help to impart a sense of pride in the lives of young girls and women through art and dolls.Don’t forget to check in next week for Part 2 of this great conversation and Aniqua’s amazing doll journey. Flora Ekpe-Idang, the CEO, Founder and creator of Corage Dolls

A passionate and powerful interview with Flora Ekpe-Idang, the CEO, Founder and creator of Corage Dolls. www.inthedollworld.com  Flora shares with us her inspiration for creating Corage Dolls, out of her experience of watching the documentary “Gril Like Me”.  She was struck by the lack of positive diverse representation in media and products had on black children and even though this ‘doll experiment” was done more recently than the historical “Doll Test” done by Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark, the results we unfortunately just as troubling. As Flora shares in her interview, she wanted to do something about it and create a doll that had a strong sense of herself, an unstoppable spirit and offer information about diverse careers, build sistership and advocate for the empowerment of girls of color. We also talk about her devastating loss of all the work she created due to a bad manufacturing experience and how she had to start all over. Despite that experience, bad supply chains during COVID and more she has been constantly driven to move forward to create multicultural dolls and books that encourage girls of color to be unstoppable. To learn more about Corage dolls please visit them at www.coragedolls.com or Instagram @coragedollsThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. What a wonderful conversation with Debra Pounds, Doll Artist and owner of Paddlefootz Dolls & Thangs  www.inthedollworld.comDebra shares how in 1997 a request from her mother for a Black Santa lead her to crafting but it was after the many conversations with her sister on how hard it had been and still was to find black dolls that were true, cute, and beautiful reflections of us as Black people for her nieces, and her daughters that led her to her doll creating. We also talk about the approach she takes to create her beautiful dolls, what dictates the design and the look each doll has. She also shares how COVID really affected her business and forced her to shut down, and the challenges that came with that and how the lingering effects of that are still affecting her business today, but the love she has for creating dolls has been her saving grace and she still continues to inspire us with her  amazing creations. As a self-taught artist, she prides herself in learning a skill she can pass on to others in helping them to create dolls, so the opportunity to teach what she knows in how to create her dolls, has opened up a new area that she is now moving forward in. We also get to find out a little bit more about her upcoming Doll show and future plans for that.  To learn more about Debra and Paddlefootz Dolls please visit her on Instagram @paddlefootzdolls and or visit her website at www.paddlefootzdolls.com #georgetteITDW #inthedollworld #inthedollworldpodcast#paddlefootzdollsandthangs #debrapounds #blackdolls #blackdollcreators Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Yla Eason, creator of Sun-Man and Owner of Olmec Toys

Another FANGIRL moment for me at IDTW.  What a fantastic time spent with Ms. Yla Eason, creator of  Sun-Man, the first Black superhero action figure and owner of Olmec Toys.  www.inthedollworld.com Ms. Eason is an award-winning educator and entrepreneur who is largely credited with pioneering the ethnic toy market at mass market stores. As an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers University, her focus is Business Communications, Multicultural Marketing, and Digital Marketing.Over 40 years ago a comment by her 3-year-old son and the love she had for him, changed the trajectory of her life and the lives of many children of color across the globe.  Her son at 3 years old, made the comment, he couldn’t be a superhero because he was black.  Dismayed after searching for a black superhero, she discovered, there was no such thing.  Ms. Eason stated, “The intention was to give positive Black presentation in imagination and creativity,” Yla shares with us her journey of what it was like stepping into that arena with no prior experience in the toy industry and how when the Universe calls you, other people are put along your path to make that happen for you. Yla also talks about some of her biggest challenges, the unique way she presented to the investors and why sometimes, ignorance can be bliss. She also admits it wasn’t a piece of cake but for many reasons we talk about during our conversation, including the reason for her doing this and the fascination of what it took to get it created, helped her to keep going. Now 40 years later, Sun-Man was reintroduced to another generation of children in 2022 as he was included as part of the expansion of He-Man, the Masters of the Universe on the 40th Anniversary of He-Man. To find out more about Yla Eason, her story and Sun-Man and the Rulers of the Sun, visit www.officialsunman.com or at facebook @ officialsunman#georgetteITDW #inthedollworld #inthedollworldpodcast #ylaeason #offcialsunman Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Demetrius Davis, Jr aka LiL Dee, CEO of Our Brown Boy Joy

What delightful show with this 10-year-old entrepreneur and doll creator, Demetrius Davis, Jr. aka Lil Dee, CEO of Our Brown Boy Joy, and his mom Dr. Luciana Gilmore. www.inthedollworld.com Our Brown Boy Joy created "My Friend," a character plush doll that speaks positive affirmations, such as “Brown Boy you are smart!” and more.LiL Dee shares that while watching the news during lock down from COVID, stories of George Floyd was unfolding, his mom could see it was making him incredibly sad.  Conversations lead to other young boys with similar stories, as she states, “because I needed it to connect with him," she continues. "We talked about Trayvon Martin and [my former student] Tamir Rice, and I could see the pain he felt." LiL Dee then told his mom he really wanted to do something to help others. Soon after that, Dr. Gilmore, said the ‘My Friend' doll came to me in a dream," She felt it was a sign and Gilmore got to work, developing a company focused on young Black boys to present to her son as a surprise on his 8th birthday. It was important to LiL Dee to have the doll say positive affirmations to help people who speak negatively about themselves, to learn to speak more positive and kind things about who they are. The doll is created in LiL Dee’s likeness, and he shares with us how he feels about having a doll that looks like him out in the world, although he was not thrilled with the first prototype, he voiced his opinion on changes and created a doll that he was happy to share with others.LiL Dee has big visions for his My Friend doll and the Our Brown Boy Joy company that he shares with us as well. I have no doubt he will see his visions become reality and continue to expand and empower his company and be a major player within the doll world. To learn more about LiL Dee and Our Brown Boy Joy you can visit them at www.ourbrownboyjoy.com #itdw #inthedollworldpodcast #inthedollworld #georgettetayloritdw Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. A very delightful and powerful conversation with Nikki Graves, CEO of Trinity Designs, Inc.  www.inthedollworld.comNikki’s journey into doll making did not start with a love of dolls, surprisingly she was not into dolls at all but out of her desire to find a doll that was a tribute to her sorority as a Delta, and with no luck finding one, Nikki decided to take matters into her own hands and develop a doll that represented her and her sorority.  That decision led to her creating not only her own doll but has expanded into a line of dolls that celebrate the Divine 9 sororities.Nikki also shares the journey she has taken to building a doll company, the challenges, triumphs and how emotional she felt with creating and then seeing her first doll, from concept to something tangible.  Once she saw it, she knew other sororities would want one of their own and she realized she wanted to continue to create and celebrate black beauty through dolls. We also get to talk about her companies endeavor to produce high quality collectibles that inspire, captivate, and encourage young women and children to love the skin they’re in and the importance of having a doll company owned by a woman of color and what that represents for diverse doll creations.Nikki also has a wonderful surprise for everyone as she shares information about the growth and expansion of the company into creating other types of dolls that will be coming in 2023.  Some truly exciting news.To learn more about Nikki Graves, and Trinity Designs, Inc visit www.trinitydesignsinc.com #inthedollworld #ITDW #inthedollwordpodcast #georgettetaylorITDW #trinitydesignsinc #nikkigraves #inthedollworld #ITDW #beauty #blackgirlmagic #blackownedThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Sandra Maxwell, BJD Artist and owner of Sandra Maxwell Studios

I had a delightful conversation with Sandra Maxwell, BJD Artist and owner of Sandra Maxwell Studios, best known for her 7" resin ball jointed Punkin Pie dolls.  Sandra is also one of the heads of the upcoming Professional Doll Makers Art Guild Online Convention. www.inthedollworld.comThis is our first episode of our In The Doll World collaboration with the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG) as the Media Partner for their upcoming online convention, which will celebrate doll artists within PDMAG.Sandra’s doll journey started years ago with her making dolls using patterns from the old Women's Day and Family Circle magazines that her mother bought. She says her poor mother would get a magazine that was all cut up because Sandra would get to them first before her mother could get a chance to read them. Money was sometimes tight in the household, and she knew that if she wanted to have dolls, this was the only way for her to get them.  Sandra was always making things because that was the only way to have the dolls and other things she wanted, hence she made her first homemade cabbage patch doll, which wound up being  featured in her High School play. After she got married and started a family, she became acquainted with reborn dolls; and then thought she might like to try sculpting.  She started sculpting on her own and created a few reborn dolls, but realized she had an affinity for little dolls and decided to try her hand at creating ball jointed (articulated) dolls.  Sandra started creating little BJD dolls, and while she was working on them, she started naming them little Punkins…and the Punkin Line was born.Although she created dolls in polymer clay, porcelain and other media, she's probably best known for her Punkin line of 7" resin ball-jointed dolls (BJDS)In 2020, she was Industry’s Choice winner in the Dolls Awards of Excellence for her Punkin Pie entry, the first in her Punkin line. For more info about Sandra Maxwell and her adorable BJD dolls, please visit www.sandramaxwellstudios.comFor more information about the upcoming Professional Doll Makers Art Guild Online Convention October 14th-16th, please visit www.pdmagconvention.com#inthedollworld #sandramaxwellstudios #professionaldollmakersThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Dominique Jean-Louis, Associate Curator of History Exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society and upcoming Black Dolls Exhibition

A great interview with Dominique Jean-Louis, Associate Curator of History Exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society for the upcoming Black Dolls exhibit, February 25th-June 5th, 2022 as well as other wonderful exhibitions including: Our Composite Nation: Frederick Douglass' America (forthcoming February 2022), Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow (2018), and the ongoing exhibition Meet the Presidents at www.inthedollworld/podcasts Dominique shares with us how the curation of this fantastic and upcoming Black Dolls exhibition came about. She also sheds light on the importance of work that the New-York Historical Society does to keep history alive, seen and shared and how her journey with the NY Historical Society began and of course a little about her own doll journey. The Black Dolls exhibition explores handmade cloth dolls made primarily by African American women between 1850 and 1940 through the lens of race, gender, and history. The exhibition immerses visitors in the world of dolls, doll play, and doll making while examining the formation of racial stereotypes and confronting the persistence of racism in American history. It features more than 100 cloth dolls, alongside dozens of historical photographs of white and Black children posed with their playthings and caregivers. A coda explores 20th-century commercial dolls marketed to a broader audience of Black families seeking to instill pride in their children. Through these humble yet potent objects, Black Dolls reveals difficult truths about American history and invites visitors to engage in the urgent national conversation around the legacy of slavery and race.Curated by Margaret K. Hofer, vice president and museum director, and Dominique Jean-Louis, To find out more about the Black Dolls exhibition or about the New-York Historical Society, please visit:   https://www.nyhistory.org/exhibitionsFollow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworld#InTheDollWorld #feedspottoppodcast Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Darla Davenport-Powell, Creator of the Niya Doll, Niyakids and founder of I AM ENUF Foundation, Inc.

We are excited and honored to have Ms. Darla Davenport-Powell, creator of the Niya Doll, Niaykids, founder of I AM ENUF Foundation and Greater Works LLC to be our guest on In The Doll World doll podcast for an empowering show, filled with over 38 years of amazing journeys, challenges, triumphs, legacy building and inspiring life lessons  www.inthedollworld.com/podcastsDarla began her journey thirty-eight years ago when she and her husband went looking for books and dolls that looked like their daughter, Niya. “We searched high and low to find books and toys that reflected our culture and came up with nothing. All that was out there at the time were white dolls dipped in chocolate with straight hair. It was also easier to find a needle in a haystack than a children’s book featuring a positive African-American family.”Darla self-published the “Here Comes Niya” book with an audiotape in 1984 and manufactured the multilingual Niya doll in 1991. The “Here Comes Niya’ doll is the first African-American doll to speak English, Spanish, and Swahili. In 2000, Darla inked her first chain store deal to sell the Niya baby doll in K-mart. In 2006, she became a finalist on the ABC American Inventor show and won $50,000 to advance her doll line on national television. It was there where Niya and her Global friends were born. After the American Inventor show, and in 2007, they launched a Niya and Friends specialty doll line at the ABC Kids Expo.  “All children deserve to see positive images that look like them in the toys they play with, in the media they watch, and in the literature they read.” Darla is relentless in filling the void. What’s next for Niya and her Clubhouse Crew? Gaming and Animation. To learn more about  Darla Davenport-Powell, the “Here Comes Niya’ doll, and the Niyakids visit    https://www.niyakids.comFollow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Marie Georghy Jacob, Doll Artist & Owner of Atelier Miss Georgia Doll on In The Doll World, doll podcast

Join our conversation with Marie Georghy Jacob, Doll Artist & Owner of Atelier Miss Georgia Doll on In The Doll World, doll podcast as she shares her amazing and dedicated journey to becoming a doll artist www.inthedollworld.com/podcastsIn early 2000, Marie started working in the fashion industry.  It was by pure chance that she discovered the doll magazine BARBIE BAZAR,  which gave rise to a whole new passion, that of collectible fashion dolls! Or was it?The magazine highlighted the fascinating world of high-end dolls. In addition, many of these luxury dolls were created either by small companies or independent artists. Letting herself be mesmerized by these sublime creations.   To fill a gap in the world of doll fashion design, Marie founded MARIE GEORGE MONTREAL, a contemporary clothing line specially created for Ellowyne Wilde dolls and the American Model (Tonner Doll).   Towards the end of 2011, she realized that her style and personality were absent.  It was time for her to move on to a more exciting challenge. "I  wanted to make my dolls with my standards of quality, aesthetics and, above all, that shared my bohemian and ethnic style with a contemporary touch."January 2012, Marie made the leap by creating her very first doll heads in plasticine. With the help of various modeling books, including those of sculptors Philippe and Charisse Faraut and several DVDs by artists such as Patricia Rose, Jack Johnston, and Apryl Jensen, her first doll Clara, came to life.  Then, in the years which followed, other BDJ dolls were born."Fashion is my life; textiles are my true vocation and dolls are my passion. It seems obvious to me that a marriage of these three was supposed to be."To learn more about Marie and the amazing dolls she creates please visithttps://ateliermissgeorgia.com  or on Instagram @amgdoll25Follow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworld  #InTheDollWorld #feedspottoppodcast #InTheDollWorldYoutube Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. ITDW w Vanessa Lee, owner of The Angel Doll Company and Doll Sculptor

Vanessa Lee, doll sculptor and owner of The Angel Doll Company shares her fantastic journey to becoming a doll artist.   www.inthedollworld.com/podcastsIn her own words, she believed she came too late to the doll world, although we would never believe that due to the outstanding dolls she creates.Vanessa grew up very poor in a small town (Barberton, Ohio), as one of five children. Her mother and teachers always allowed her to freely express herself artistically and with very few limitations or restrictions on her imagination.   As far back as Vee could remember, she's loved dolls.  Any time she was sad, scared, or just feeling down, there was always a doll there to comfort her. She shares with us how her artistic soul and dolls became one in 2012 when Vanessa happened to stumble into a Doll Art Gallery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania that was owned by World renowned Artist "Mark Dennis". He agreed to teach "Vee" to sculpt and to create her doll designs. She then taught herself to mold and caste and then went on to create the incredible dolls that we love to collect to this day.Vee loves the journey of creating silicone dolls, and believes that everyone should know that they have an Angel! To find out more about Vanessa Lee and the incredible dolls she creates, please visithttps://www.theangeldollcompany.com/Follow and like In The Doll World™ at:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworld #InTheDollWorld #feedspottoppodcast #InTheDollWorldYoutube Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Tamara Casey, Owner of Designs by Jude on In The Doll World doll podcast

We are joined by the delightful and talented doll clothing pattern designer, Tamara Casey, Owner of Designs by Jude, on In The Doll World, doll podcast. https://www.inthedollworld.com/podcasts As Tamara states, her doll journey was similar and different from others who have become dedicated doll lovers and collectors. When I was growing up my mother and grandmother were both accomplished crafters. My grams owned a ceramic shop, and my mom would make ceramic and porcelain dolls and enter them into competitions. Both women were amazing sewers and quilters and I was neither. I dabbled in their art but preferred being outside. I was a bit of a tomboy.  She eventually found her love for dolls as a young teenager through a friendship with a younger neighbor. They would spend countless hours playing with Barbie.  Tamara thought she would play with dolls well into her twenties, but was wrong and she did not rediscover dolls until she owned a small gift store in 2000. Tamara began her journey back as a painter and customizer. Reading through one of the magazines she saw an article about OOAK dolls. Fascinated, she told her husband that people were buying thrift store dolls and transforming them into mermaids and fairies with paints, silk flowers, and a glue gun.  That began her venture into repainting and customizing. When Robert Tonner’s Marley Wentworth was released in 2005 as a basic doll, she decided to create her first sewing pattern. It was a hand-drawn pattern for pants, a top, and a floppy hat. From there the collection began to grow. Over time she had developed a relationship with Jackie, the owner of the Doll Market in Greensboro, NC.  In 2008 Jackie, asked her if she wanted to purchase it.  Feeling she just didn’t know enough about the varied inventory and retail was not her goal, she declined.  Tamara states, everything happens for a reason. Just having her ask me about buying her business opened my mind up to the possibility of growing my business. Shortly after that, my mom saw that Gary Fletcher was selling his pattern business, and the rest as they say is "Herstory"To learn more about Tamara and to see more of her amazing patterns of Design by Jude, please visit  https://www.fletcherpatterncompany.com/Follow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworldThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Patrizia Cozzo, OOAK Doll Artist on In The Doll World doll podcast

Join our wonderful conversation with Patrizia Cozzo on In The Doll World doll podcast as she shares with us her unique story. One that did not start with a love for dolls at https://www.inthedollworld.com/creators Patrizia says  was not very fond of dolls until she fell in love with the wonderful world of OOAK dolls years ago while surfing on the net. She did  play with dolls when she was a little girl, and liked them, but  was not in love so to speak.  For her, discovering the art dolls world was a turning point.   She talks about how she could not afford the stunning creations she had seen,  so she decided she would give it a try and create one herself.    She did know about polymer clay when she was around 15 and was making jewelry and little animals, and because of that polymer clay was a natural choice for her.Patrizia states,  I studied all I could find about doll making online and made my first doll in 2007.Patrizia has also has great recognition in America as well as in Russia and Spain. She has been featured in many publications, such as Fashion Doll Quarterly and has also received many awards from  Russia and  Spain (PDMAG Gold Award, Collii Award, Gaudir Award). Ping Lau, Sculptor & Doll Artist on In The Doll World doll podcast.

Join us as we talk with Ping Lau, Sculptor  & Doll Artist about her unique journey to creating dolls, from illustrator to sculptor on In The Doll World doll podcast www.inthedollworld.com/creatorsPing  shares with us her encounter with Marie Osmond and how that meeting truly kicked off her career and lead her to over 12 years working with Marie Osmond in helping to sculpt and  along with a few other artists, Marie Osmond Dolls. Ping's dolls, paintings and other creations have been displayed at art galleries, art shows, and on national TV on the Home Shopping Network. Her doll kits are carried by retailers such as Ashton Drake, Doll Dreams, and Paradise Galleries.A part of this show is also dedicated to something Ping Lau has been wanting to share and that is the serious problem of doll knock off scams. Last year they stole 8 of her dolls to copy and resell. We did not know how  truly invasive it is,  especially in the new born segment. Not only does it affecting the creators and their livelihood, but how it can also affect the health of the people and their families when these dolls are purchased, sometimes unbenowst to them that they are buying a knock off.  Many or most of these dolls that are being copied, may not be going through any of regulations they need to do in order to make sure the materials they are using are safe. Some of those materials maybe toxic to you.  We hope sharing this will help to expose what is happening and help to educate buyers on what to look for when purchasing certain dolls. On our website you can find " 7 Tips to Avoiding Scam Doll Sales" that was shared with us by Ping Lau, that we  have compiled and put into an infographic that you can access on our website at https://www.inthedollworld.com/7-tips-doll-scams.htmlTo find out more about Ping Lau and her beautiful dolls, please visit:https://www.pingart.com/galleries_home.htmlhttps://www.facebook.com/ping.lau.771Follow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworld Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Yatabazah: Artist, Wig Maker, Designer on In The Doll World doll podcast

What a fascinating interview with Yatabazah,  Artist, Wig Maker, Designer on In The Doll World doll podcast at www.inthedollworld.com/podcasts Yatabazah, shares with us how his love for hair and wigs was inspired when he was around 9 or 10 by a ponytail his mother kept of her own hair.   He talks about how he would snip strands from it, unbeknownst to his mother to create wigs for his sisters dolls, with whom she was the only one that allowed him the freedom to play with dolls. As he created wigs from these strands he was so taken with  how transformative hair could be, not just from taking on a new persona when wearing it but how it reacted to all types of outside stimuli. We also talk about how hair and wigs reveals so much about the personality of a person just by the way they chose to wear their hair and the power that comes from that. His story also touches on how dolls are so much more for him, how they have helped him during many times in life and how being with dolls is something that most people don't talk  about or feel comfortable in sharing  that way. His story allows for others to be heard and understood.Yatabazah has created handmade doll wigs and headpieces  for Popovy, Pasha, BJDs, Blythe, Mdvanii, Mamzelle de Paris, Enchanted doll, Barbie, Silkstone and many more.To learn more about Yatabazah or see his amazing wigs, hats and accessories, visit:https://yatabazah.com  https://instagram.com/yatabazah   http://tiny.cc/yatatubeThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Eva Hovelsrød, doll clothing maker and owner of Tirin & Katten on In The Doll World doll podcast

A wonderful conversation with Eva Hovelsrød, doll clothing maker, artist and owner of Tirin & Katten on In The Doll World doll podcast.  Eva shares with us a very different background coming into the doll world,  from a background  in computer science  for over years to doll clothing designer.  She  discovered dolls in 2013 via an interest in knitting, and was soon up past midnight most nights, working on doll-related projects. The urge to make doll clothes took her by surprise--stating "I have never thrown myself quite like that into a hobby before. I found a very friendly and supportive online community.  Dolls are an outlet for all kinds of interests and I have tried a few, like wig making and shoemaking; but, I try to stick to sewing"Eva started out sewing for Blythe dolls, but has lots of different dolls. Currently,  she sews most often for a Korean BJD brand called iMda.She is also eager to  help others experience the joy of making little garments! "I am also passionate about usability, no doubt because of my background in computer science. When I put together tutorials, I aim for them to be accessible also to people without much sewing experience, while being clear and concise. I spend a lot of time on each tutorial. This causes me to put off making new ones, so I have an internal dialog going about how I can improve the process, and what kind of tutorials and patterns to make in the future." Valerie Gladstone, Owner of Brooklyn Dollworks and Award Winning Artist on In The Doll World doll podcast

The amazing Valerie Gladstone, award winning artist and owner of Brooklyn Dollworks joins us for a wonderful conversation about her journey into creating art dolls. www.inthedollworld.com/creators Valerie's journey into dolls was not your typical journey into doll making.  As a self confessed tom boy she didn't really play with dolls, but was very creative.  She trained in painting, costume design, wig and makeup design, needlecraft, ceramics, and photography. An amazing featured article and picture in Art Doll Quarterly caught her eye and jumpstarted her journey into Art Dolls where she thought she could apply all her varied skills into one item.   Working in the theatre for so many years, she enjoys telling stories; each doll, even if they are part of a series, has to speak on its own.She started taking them on tour and during that time, she had another chance encounter that led to her most eclectic work being recognized and winning awards. For Valerie, the creative process begins with inspiration. The inspiration can come from a historical fact, a piece of fabric, or the need to try a new technique. She prefers to work in series, like her New York series which comes from the love of my hometown, which she elaborates more on in the podcast. Her art dolls are passionate and powerful.  She shares how important it is to to have intention for what you are creating. To learn more about Valerie and her art, please visit: Website: https://www.brooklyndollworks.com     Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BrooklynDollworksFollow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworld  Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. LISA WILLIAMS,  creator of Positively Perfect, The Fresh Dolls and The Fresh Squad.    www.inthedollworld.com/creatorsFrom professor to entrepreneur and doll creator, Dr. Lisa's passion and desire of not wanting children growing not loving their true beauty and brilliance is very much present in this heartfelt conversation with us.    Her journey of loving dolls and books,  was very much evident, when she shared that she loved dolls, but grew out of playing them much earlier than her sister did and as she got older she would use them as students to teach them the lessons she learned from earlier that day.   A professor in the making from way back. She also tells us the turning point in her career from professor, to author to entrepreneur,  "one day while watching an updated doll study, I saw a beautiful little dark-skinned girl say she didn’t think the brown doll was pretty because its skin was nasty.  She then touched her own hand indicating her skin was nasty, too.  As my heart broke and tears flowed down my face, I said to myself, I have to do something" and that something turned into the World of EPI.  A wonderful and heartfelt conversation with a women who persevered  in spite of setbacks  that pushed her to financial ruin, to the point that she lost her home and many other things along the way to create a wonderful line of dolls and a successful doll company with the mission of spreading joy by providing children with dolls that inspire dreams, promote intelligence and build self-esteem.  Dr. Lisa states " Building self-esteem is the cornerstone of all the work I do, because low self-esteem can limit a child’s potential and have a negative impact on communities and society at large".     To learn more about Dr. Lisa and the World of EPI please visit:https://thefreshdolls.com/Follow and like In The Doll World on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldLinktree: https://www.linktr.ee/inthedollworldThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Dr. Sabrina Thomas, Doll Collector and Historian on In The Doll World doll podcast

In The Doll World (ITDW) doll podcast and YouTube channel is excited to share an interview with the beautiful and fascinating,  Dr. Sabrina Thomas. https://www.inthedollworld.com/storytellers.htmlSabrina takes her doll collecting very seriously! Not only is she an avid doll collector; but, she is also studying dolls as part of her degree program as a social scientist in the department of Education at Duke University! She shares with us her wonderful journey into doll collecting, which started out with only 3 dolls and the stories behind those first 3 dolls, are just as  fascinating as Dr. Thomas herself. Sabrina also shares the beautiful story of how her encounter with a Marla Perkin's book which then led to a conversation with Ms. Perkins herself is what truly ignited her pursuit of doll collecting, study and research on dolls, their history and the impact they have on our world and so much more in this wonderful conversation.A little fun side note: Dr. Thomas was introduced to us by her daughter, Yaa who suggested we have her on the show and not just because she is such an avid fan of ITDW as you will hear during the show, but most importantly she is very knowledgeable and has such a  wealth of information to share with with us and our audience.Sabrina has received several grants and fellowships to research the ethnography of children’s play with a specific focus on children’s doll play. Her current research project includes an examination of black doll production and how children negotiate the presence or absence of a black doll in their play space.Thank you Sabrina for educating us about dolls, their history, and how doll history has impacted the racial history of the United States. If you would like to know more about Sabrina and her studies, you may reach her on Facebook at, https://www.facebook.com/sabrina.thomas.92123Follow  and like us on  Facebook and Instagramhttps://www.facebook.com/inthedollworldhttps://www.instagram.com/inthedollworld/ #InTheDollWorld #inthedollworldpodcast #sabrinathomas #dollcollecting #dollhistory #georgettetayloritdw #tammyfisheritdw Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Jacquie Anderson-Frazier, owner online store KittiJ's Boutique, diorama maker and doll customizer on In The Doll World doll podcast

In The Doll World (ITDW) doll podcast and YouTube channel continues its PRIDE Month Celebration with a powerful interview with Jacquie Anderson-Frazier, owner of the online store KittiJ's Boutique. Jacquie is also a diorama maker and doll customizer. We found Jacquie to be beautifully powerful and honest. She was also very truthful--including telling us that she doesn't understand people's fascination with other people's sexual orientations. She described the fascination "perverted'!Jacquie also shared wonderful stories about her doll journey. She loved dolls as a little girl. When she grew up, she bought them for her daughter and then her granddaughter.  Jacquie was a lover of miniatures. So, she collected lots of doll-sized items. Then one day, she found a doll that re-ignited her love of dolls. From there she went on to collect dolls. She was unhappy that the variety of Black dolls was less than the the variety of white dolls; so, she began purchasing white dolls and using their clothes and accessories to redress and customize Black dolls! Jacquie dated men until 1985.  She described her "coming out" as boring because she said she always knew she liked women; "It just was." Jacquie said. "I never felt I owed an explanation for my sexual preference".Jacquie also confirmed that relationships are basically the same: she met a wonderful woman, they dated, they fell in love, and they got married. They have been married for over 16 years and have been in a relationship for almost 30 years. Jacquie didn't think the country would accept queer marriages in her lifetime. She and her wife have 3 children and 9 grandchildren. To learn more about Jacquie and her creations, visit her KittiJ's Boutique at: https://www.facebook.com/KittiJs-Bout...SHOW LESSThank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Hextian, Doll Customizer & YouTube Sensation, Celebrates PRIDE with In The Doll World doll podcast

In The Doll World (ITDW) doll podcast continues its PRIDE Month celebration with an intimate interview with HeXtian, doll customizer and YouTube sensation. HeXtian is a tremendous doll influencer: over 1Million people follow his YouTube show!  Listen at https://www.inthedollworld.com/podcasts.html One of the most powerful things HeXtian shares is his fear! He speaks about how he loves to dress in a variety of clothing styles--including the glamourous 1950s and Drag. If he chooses to go out dressed in these styles, he has to first make sure he is safe. Safety includes: being with a group of people he can trust; carefully choosing where he goes; and, deciding whether the location has a restroom that he can safely use. He understands that a wrong choice can lead to anything from being treated rudely, to being assaulted, to even being murdered. His fear reminds us of the fear marginalized people have experienced--and continue to experience--all over the world. As a brilliant artist, who empowers others through customized dolls, he continues to find inspiration for his artistry in his favorite childhood shows, the LGBTQ+ community, and celebrities. He also shares his Filipino heritage in his shows. HeXtian also speaks about how his art is a safe way to express his queerness and love for Drag. He finds strength in sharing the beauty and glamour of Drag in his customizations. To see HeXtian's work please visit his YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/hextianUPDATES: Subscribe to our website for updates and to enter into the doll giveaways: https://www.inthedollworld.com/subscribeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthedollworldBuzzsprout: https://inthedollworld.buzzsprout.com/Website: https://www.inthedollworld.comLinktree: Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Amy Jandrisevits, Doll Creator and Founder of A Doll Like Me, joins In The Doll World, doll podcast

www.inthedollworld.com/creators   In The Doll World, doll podcast and doll YouTube channel, shares an inspirational and passionate interview with Amy Jandrisevits, doll creator and founder of A Doll Like Me.  Join us as we talk about the amazing cloth dolls that Amy creates for children with limb differences, birthmarks, facial anomalies, and albinism and so many more and how truly important it is for these children to be represented in a doll ...."because everyone deserves to look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own".Amy talks about her journey from a child who helped he mother find dolls for underrepresented children, to becoming a social worker who worked with children with cancer.  She was also a passionate doll collector and had created a few bald dolls for chemotherapy patients. She noticed how those dolls could help a child get through tough times and find a way to connect and nurture themselves when the dolls looked like the children. Amy shares many stories about how her dolls came to be, one touching story was the true catalyst to creating A Doll Like Me, when a  friend of a friend saw a doll that looked like her daughter, but the friend's daughter's leg had just been amputated and she asked Amy if she could make a doll that looked like her daughter with the amputated leg. That led to the doll being posted on social media and within 2 months she had over 200 orders and the rest, as they say, is Doll Herstory.Every doll makes a difference;  and, every doll is created and hand sewn with love.  To find out how you can support and sponsor a doll for a child, please visit Amy and A Doll Like Me at her Facebook page at www.adolllikeme.com Follow and like In The Doll World, doll podcast and doll YouTube channel, on social media. Mike Buess, Doll Artist and Creator of Fabiola of Hollywood

https://www.inthedollworld.com/creators.html           Mike Buess, doll artist and creator of Fabiola of Hollywood, joins us for a delightful show.  Mike has set the collectible doll world on fire with his line of one-of-a-kind, Latinx dolls! Though each Fabiola is made from the same mold, Mike hand paints and individually dresses them; so, each one has her own personality! Mike , whose mother was born and raised in Puerto Rico, shares stories from his life that speak to why he chose to create Fabiola as a Latina. He expresses his love for his heritage and is happy to have created Fabiola as a vintage doll whose back story is form the 1950's and 1960's.  Mike had Fabiola manufactured in Spain using vintage processes. He said his goal was to create a beautiful doll that would fit in with dolls that were either manufactured during the 1950's and 1960's or were manufactured to look as though they were created during those decades.  Another important part of Fabiola's back story is she is a model who works for a store called Cedrick's of Hollywood. Mike creates a wonderful world where you can visit Cedrick's and shop for your Fabiola or other 12-inch doll! Cedrick's carries many accessories including clothing, belts, shoes, makeup compacts and more! Mike is both excited and humbled by his success. He speaks of how other doll artists embraced him and Fabiola--even before Fabiola was completed! With the help of his supportive fans, Fabiola had a spectacular debut and sold out within a few days! Doug James, Creator of C.E.D.Dolls, first fully-articulated modern fashion dolls

www.inthedollworld.com/creators       We get to have a wonderful conversation with Doug  James, another amazing pioneer in doll history.  From Doug's entrance into the doll world  as a doll fashion designer. He and his friend Laura Meisner created clothing for Mel Odom's Gene Marshall doll and for Madame Alexander dolls.   To his being credited and earning the honor with his friend Laura with articulating the modern fashion doll through the C.E.D. Though vintage dolls had previously been articulated and other doll artist had articulated dolls at places like the neck, shoulders, hips, and knees, Doug and Laura were the first to do a more complete articulation on modern fashion dolls. He articulated the bicep, elbow, wrist, and torso making them the first to do a more complete articulation on modern fashion dolls with the C.E.D Dolls.  If you are interested in learning more about Doug and his dolls, visit his online store, CED Dolls at: http://www.ceddolls.com/Thank you for listening to In The Doll World, to see all the artists we have featured on the show or to leave a review visit www.inthedollworld.com or to see our video interviews please visit our Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/inthedollworld.com. Emilia Nieminen, Designer of Inamorata dolls and Emilia Couture

www.inthedollworld.com    Emilia shares with us a wonderful and sometimes challenging entrpreneurial journey on her road to being an amazing couture doll artist.  Her tenacity has led to creating a living for herself creating dolls which is what most creatives and artists long to do. From selling her drawings in school to get pocket change to learning the skills of sculpting from her time being an art model which gave her a very discerning eye for sculpting and creating Inamorata dolls and Emilia Couture. Her journey is a fascinating look into an amazing artist who also shares her fascinating and unique details she adds to bring her dolls to life. She started collecting and repainting dolls in 2006 and the hobby soon gained a life of its own. In 2009 I won an international CDDC (Couture Doll Design Challenge), a contest in designing doll fashions and got my first two features in American doll magazines. It made me believe that the hobby could turn into a career. In 2010 Emilia began developing her own doll, and slowly hand sculpting it from wax for two years. In 2012 the first Inamorata doll was unveiled at the IDEX doll convention and the doll was awarded DOLLS magazine Award of Excellence in 2013.
