169. My Summer Recap and Your Q&A Submissions

In this episode, Dr. Danielle provides an update on her summer travels and shares her personal experience with low AMH levels. She discusses how she improved her AMH levels through various methods, including taking antioxidants, doing acupuncture, and optimizing her thyroid function. Dr. Danielle also answers listener questions about high LDL and total cholesterol, improving period color and flow, increasing egg white cervical mucus, and optimizing estrogen levels. She clarifies the difference between insulin resistance and PCOS and provides tips for weight loss with PCOS. Lastly, she announces an upcoming download on optimal hormone levels for fertility testing. Takeaways Low AMH levels can be improved through various methods, such as taking antioxidants, doing acupuncture, and optimizing thyroid function. High LDL and total cholesterol can be influenced by factors like genetics, constipation, and low thyroid function. Period color and flow can indicate hormone imbalances, with light flow potentially indicating low estrogen and heavy flow potentially indicating high estrogen. Egg white cervical mucus is important for fertility, and its absence can be caused by low estrogen, lack of ovulation, or other factors. Optimizing estrogen levels can be achieved through a balanced diet, supporting egg quality, and addressing adrenal function. Insulin resistance and PCOS are related but not the same, with insulin resistance being a blood sugar issue and PCOS being a syndrome with metabolic and hormonal imbalances. Eating a bigger breakfast and lighter dinner can be effective for weight loss with PCOS, but it's important to focus on nutrient-dense foods and consider other factors beyond meal timing. An upcoming download will provide comprehensive information on optimal hormone levels for fertility testing and how to advocate for your own health. 167. Q&A: Mucinex for Fertility, Why Your AMH is High, Cold Plungingand More

In this Q&A-style episode, Dr. Danielle answers questions related to PCOS, fertility, and hormone health. She discusses the use of mucinex for fertility, the significance of high AMH levels in PCOS, the safety of intermittent fasting during different phases of the menstrual cycle, the timing of cold plunges, the benefits of raw carrot salads, the difference between the Dutch test and a hair follicle test for hormones, considerations for getting off spironolactone, the impact of SSRIs on gut health, and advice for a friend struggling to conceive despite regular cycles and accurate timing of sex. Takeaways The use of mucinex for fertility is not supported by much scientific evidence, and it may not be suitable for all women. High AMH levels in PCOS are due to the presence of multiple immature follicles in the ovaries, not cysts. Intermittent fasting can be safe during all phases of the menstrual cycle, but more extreme fasts should be avoided during the luteal phase and early menstrual phase. Cold plunging can be beneficial for calming the nervous system, but it should be avoided during the two-week wait when trying to conceive. Raw carrot salads can be helpful for estrogen dominance and gut health. The Dutch test is a more accurate option for hormone testing compared to a hair follicle test. Getting off spironolactone should be done gradually and with support to minimize the risk of acne flare-ups. Food sensitivity testing may be beneficial for individuals with gut symptoms, skin symptoms, inflammatory symptoms, autoimmune conditions, or unexplained infertility. Progesterone levels should be checked to ensure they are sufficient for supporting pregnancy. Semen analysis should be considered to assess sperm health and motility. Improving egg quality may be necessary for individuals experiencing regular cycles but difficulty conceiving. SSRIs can have an impact on gut health and hormone balance, and probiotic support may be beneficial. Leaving a review for the podcast can help more women access valuable information about their health and options beyond conventional medicine. 166. Prioritizing Postpartum Health: Tips for a Quick Recovery

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the importance of supporting postpartum mothers and provides tips on how to navigate the postpartum period. She emphasizes the need for moms to prioritize their health and seek support from healthcare professionals. Dr. Danielle also highlights the common symptoms experienced during postpartum and suggests ways to address them. She covers topics such as hormonal health, digestive health, mental health, and physical activity. Additionally, she recommends specific dietary recommendations, supplements, and lifestyle changes to support postpartum recovery. Takeaways Postpartum mothers often get less attention and support compared to pregnant women, so it's important for them to prioritize their health and seek support from healthcare professionals. Common symptoms during the postpartum period, such as fatigue, constipation, depression, hair loss, and anxiety, can be addressed and should not be considered normal. Testing sex hormones, thyroid function, and blood sugar levels can provide valuable insights into postpartum health and help identify any imbalances or deficiencies. Dietary recommendations for postpartum mothers include consuming foods high in healthy fats, lean proteins, complex carbs, and leafy greens. Supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, evening primrose oil, magnesium glycinate, B vitamins, and 5-HTP can support hormonal balance and mental health. *NOTE: 5-HTP should *not* be taken with an SSRI as this can lead to Serotonin Syndrome. Supporting digestive health through fiber-rich foods, probiotics, and anti-inflammatory foods is important for postpartum recovery. Prioritizing mental health through social support, therapy, and proper nutrition can help prevent or manage postpartum depression and anxiety. Returning to physical activity postpartum should be done gradually and with guidance from a pelvic physical therapist or appropriate exercise programs. Testing nutrient levels, including vitamin D, B12, and iron, is important to address any deficiencies and optimize energy and mental health during the postpartum period. 165. Achieving a Healthy "Geriatric" Pregnancy Over 35

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses how to achieve a healthy geriatric pregnancy for women over 35 years old. She highlights the lack of support in conventional medicine and the misconception that IUI or IVF are the only options. Dr. Danielle emphasizes the importance of preconception work, improving egg quality, managing autoimmunity, and considering acupuncture. She debunks myths about age being the sole factor in egg quality and the inevitability of low AMH. Dr. Danielle also recommends specific tests to ask for, including FSH, LH, estradiol, AMH, thyroid panel, progesterone, and imaging. 161. Q&A; Long Menstrual Cycles, High Testosterone, and Exercise with PCOS

APRIL GIVEAWAY To enter: Leave a *written* review for the podcast. Screenshot your review and send to [email protected] OR @drdanielle.nd. For a second entry: Share the podcast on Instagram and tag @drdanielle.nd The winner will be announced May! ----- In this episode, Dr. Danielle answers three questions related to women's health. She discusses how to shorten long menstrual cycles, the relationship between high testosterone and PCOS, and the best exercises for women with PCOS. She emphasizes the importance of comprehensive testing to identify the underlying causes of long cycles and high testosterone. Dr. Danielle also provides recommendations for strength training and walking as effective exercises for women with insulin-resistant PCOS, and suggests lower impact workouts like Pilates and yoga for other types of PCOS. Takeaways Long menstrual cycles, lasting more than 35 days, can be caused by delayed ovulation, often related to insulin resistance, excess adrenal androgens, or inflammation. Comprehensive testing is important to identify the underlying causes of long cycles and high testosterone, including insulin levels, adrenal androgens, thyroid function, and prolactin levels. High testosterone does not always mean you have PCOS. PCOS is diagnosed based on high testosterone, irregular cycles, and polycystic ovaries seen on ultrasound. For women with insulin-resistant PCOS, strength training and walking are recommended to improve insulin resistance and glucose metabolism. For other types of PCOS, lower impact workouts like Pilates and yoga can be beneficial, as they help lower cortisol levels and reduce inflammation. Finding an exercise routine that is enjoyable and sustainable is key for long-term management of PCOS. ----- Have a topic you want covered? 160. Testing and Treatment Options for SIBO with Dr. Lauren Steinman

Danielle interviews Dr. Lauren Steinman, a SIBO expert, about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and its impact on hormonal health and fertility. They discuss the symptoms of SIBO, the different types of SIBO, and the root causes of the condition. They also explore the testing and treatment options for SIBO, including antibiotics and herbal remedies. Dr. Lauren emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of SIBO and working with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach. She also provides tips for preventing relapses and recommends abdominal massage for supporting gut motility. About Dr. Lauren Steinman: "Having grown up in Germany, I had the great fortune to experience a holistic style of medicine from an early age. ‌ This inspired me to study at the oldest naturopathic medical school in the US (The National University of Natural Medicine), in Portland Oregon. During my four year doctoral training, I underwent rigorous classroom and clinical training, and spent extra time focusing my clinical education on women's health and digestive health.  ‌ SIBO is my clinical focus and I am one of a handful of experts treating this condition in Europe. Having suffered from SIBO myself, I know how frustrating it can be. In my 7 years of practice I have treated thousand of SIBO patients. Most of my patients come to me after a long and difficult journey with their gut health and travel to my practice from all over Germany and Europe. I am passionate about treating this complex condition and training healthcare providers in the specifics of SIBO. ‌ In Germany I am licensed to practice as a Heilpraktiker due to differences in medical licensing. " Takeaways SIBO is an acronym for small intestine bacterial overgrowth, a condition where bacteria migrate from the large intestine to the small intestine and cause an overgrowth. Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, reflux, nausea, and systemic symptoms like joint pain and brain fog. The three types of SIBO are hydrogen-dominant, methane-dominant (also known as EMO), and hydrogen sulfide-dominant. Testing for SIBO is typically done through a breath test, with lactulose being the preferred test substance. Treatment options for SIBO include antibiotics (such as rifaximin, neomycin, and metronidazole) and herbal remedies (such as oregano extract, garlic extract, and neem). It is important to address the root causes of SIBO, such as motility issues, food poisoning, hypothyroidism, and stress. Relapses of SIBO are common, with a 40-70% relapse rate. It is important to work with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach and focuses on relapse prevention. The low FODMAP diet can provide symptomatic relief in the short term, but it is not a long-term solution and should not be followed for more than three months. Additional tests that may be helpful for SIBO include markers of inflammation (such as CRP and calprotectin) and markers of gut permeability (such as zonulin and IFABP). Finding a practitioner who specializes in SIBO and takes a holistic approach is important for effective treatment and long-term management of the condition. 150. FRIDAY CHATS: Why Healthy Women Are Choosing Egg Freezing

In this episode, Dr. Danielle answers a question about why healthy women in their early 30s choose to freeze their eggs. She discusses the trend of delaying parenthood and the availability of IVF as contributing factors. The influence of social media and the openness of women sharing their fertility journeys also play a role. Dr. Danielle explains that women freeze their eggs as an insurance policy or backup plan for future family planning. She emphasizes that egg freezing is not a guarantee of pregnancy and discusses the number of eggs needed for a higher chance of success. Dr. Danielle highlights the decline in fertility with age and the benefits of using younger, healthier eggs through egg freezing. She concludes by recommending egg quality support before undergoing the process. Takeaways More women are choosing to delay parenthood and freeze their eggs as an insurance policy for future family planning. Egg freezing is not a guarantee of pregnancy, and the number of eggs needed for a higher chance of success should be discussed with a doctor. Fertility declines with age, and egg quality can become compromised, making egg freezing a way to use younger, healthier eggs later in life. 148. Histamine Intolerance and Your Hormones

In this episode of the Heal Your Hormones podcast, Dr. Danielle explores the connection between histamine intolerance and hormones. She explains what histamine is, its role in the immune system and hormone production, and the signs of histamine intolerance. Dr. Danielle also discusses the impact of histamine intolerance on hormonal symptoms, the connection between histamine and estrogen, and dietary approaches to managing histamine intolerance. 147. FRIDAY CHATS: Should You Be Supplementing with DIM?

In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the use of DIM (Diindolylmethane) as a supplement for hormone balance. She explains what DIM is and how it works to break down estrogen. Dr. Danielle emphasizes the importance of testing hormone levels before starting DIM and highlights the symptoms of estrogen dominance that may benefit from DIM supplementation. However, she also cautions against using DIM if estrogen levels are normal or low. The episode concludes with a reminder of the importance of comprehensive hormone testing and seeking professional guidance. Takeaways DIM is a natural compound found in cruciferous vegetables that helps break down estrogen. DIM is beneficial for individuals with estrogen dominance and symptoms such as heavy, painful periods, endometriosis, fibroids, or severe PMS. When the dust settled after the end of Gillian’s dietetic internship, she realized she had been in survival mode and ignoring symptoms with her period for awhile.
