We first discuss the start for Caitlin Clark in the WNBA. She's being guarded closely and tighter than any player in the league. What should be take away from the start she has had and is there glimpses of progress?  Then we stick with Iowa women's hoops and talk about hte Jan Jensen hire. What did she have to say about recruiting? What about hiring an assistant coach to replace herself on the staff? They will be on the road this weekend, how was that addressed? And after talking to Iowa AD Beth Goetz, how were they able to keep this massive news under wraps for a few days? We move on to Iowa men's hoops and the signing of Manhattan transfer Seydou Traore. What is Iowa getting in Traore and how did he perform against high major foes? How does this impact the Iowa frontcourt this season? We also look at how Payton Sandfort performed at the NBA Combine? Is he expected to return for one more season? When does he have to decide? Finally we discuss the Iowa football team adding a wide receiver, who happens to have been the roomate of new Hawkeye QB Brendan Sullivan.

EMERGENCY PODCAST!!! Massive news for the Iowa women's basketball program. Lisa Bluder has announced her retirement. That's huge news, but Iowa also announced that associate head coach Jan Jensen will be taking over as the new head coach.  Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann dive into all of this. We start with Lisa Bluder announcing her retirement and try to put her career in perspective. From her humble roots coaching at St. Ambrose to 24 seasons leading the Iowa program, Bluder did it by building a great culture at every stop. We discuss her legacy and how she was able to take the program to a level no one thought was possible going to back to back national title games. We also talk about how it is fitting that Bluder and Caitlin Clark end their Iowa careers together.  Next we look at the immediate hiring of Jan Jensen. It should have been a surprise, but we talk about the quick decison and the impact that decision will have on the Iowa program moving forward. What could be some of the assistant coach options for Jensen as she looks to complete her staff? What about the recruiting impact? Jensen led the recruitment of nearly every prospect, but what will their reactions be? We also do a few minutes on Iowa baseball heading into post season play next week in the Big Ten Tournament and what they may do with their rotation. 

A special edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast. On this show we are joined by J.R. Koch and his son Cooper, who will be headed to Iowa City to play for the Hawkeyes this fall. We catch up with both of them for a joint podcast to discuss Cooper and his development as a player. How does he compare to his father in terms of a game? We discuss Cooper starting to come to Iowa camps when he was in fourth grade and how he eventually earned the full attention of Fran McCaffery, who offered him a scholarship before his ninth grade year. Even though it's technically the off-season, there's always plenty going on in the world of Iowa football and basketball. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo jump on the podcast this week to discuss all the latest Hawkeye news.  We start with a look at the quarterback situation in Iowa City. Deacon Hill hit the portal last week. Tommy Poholsky joined him on Monday. That leaves the Hawkeyes with just three quarterbacks on the roster heading into the summer. Should Iowa fans panic? Nope. We discuss why Iowa has already been looking to the transfer portal this spring. We also look at why it's not as crowded in the transfer portal so far this spring and why the Hawkeyes will eventually find someone. Also, Iowa is hunting for a wide receiver in the portal. We discuss their main target and look at other potential wide receivers in the portal if they were to miss on their #1 choice. Finally, we look at the scholarship situation for the Hawkeye football team and as of Monday, they are still over the limit. Then we move on to the NFL Draft and discuss Cooper DeJean going to the Eagles and his surprise drop out of the first round. Tory Taylor going to the Bears and why that's a great fit. The Iowa women's basketball team is off to the National Title game for the second straight year. That means there's plenty for Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann to discuss when it comes to Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes.  We open the podcast discuss the massive rating that the Iowa vs. UConn game pulled off on Friday night. What do with think of the viewership numbers and what could the title game against South Carolina bring on Sunday afternoon? Then we look back at the win over UConn. What were the keys to the Iowa win and how did they change the game in the second half. We also go in-depth about the "controversial" call late in the game where UConn was called for an offensive foul. For the second straight year, the Iowa women's basketball team will be playing in a Final Four game with a chance to advance to the NCAA Title game on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann take a detailed look at the match-up for the Hawkeyes against a talented, but not deep team from UCONN.  The headline battle will be between stars Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers from UCONN, but the real interesting battle might be in the post because the Huskies are not deep. We take a look at some of the key stats to watch this game and why Iowa might come out and continue to try and play with a high level of pace like they did against LSU on Monday night.  Then we give our predictions for the game and the path to victory for the Hawkeyes. Will rebounding be a key in this game? Will three point shooting determine the outcome? We dive into it all. 

It's a Final Four edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast. The Iowa women's basketball team is headed to their second consecutive Final Four after beating the team that defeated them in the National Title game last year, LSU.  Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann break down the win over the Tigers and the incredible 41 point and 12 assist performance from Caitlin Clark. What were the keys for Iowa in the win? How did the Hawkeyes flip the script this time around? What have we seen from Clark in the last two games that is different from the earlier games in the NCAA Tournament?  We look at the key numbers from the game and how incredible it was that Iowa was outrebounded by 18 and was still able to beat LSU by a relatively comfortable margin. After beating Colorado on Saturday there's a re-match the college basketball world has been waiting all year for taking place on Monday night in Albany. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann preview the huge match-up between Iowa and LSU. This time a national title will not be on the line, but a chance to potentially win one will.  First, we look back at Iowa's very convincing win on Saturday over Colorado. Caitlin Clark dominated the game, scoring 29 points and dishing out 15 assists while only turning it over twice. She was in total control and we discuss her performance and perhaps a concern that she has not shot it well from three point range.  We also talk about the play of her teammates and how they really stepped up in the second half on the glass to pull away for the win. We also discuss the continued great play from Syd Affolter and the sharp shooting of Gabbie Marshall.  Then we preview the massive game against LSU. What are the keys for Iowa if they are going to beat the Tigers this time around? What did Kim Mulkey and the LSU players have to say about Iowa on Sunday at their presser and is the beef between Clark and Angel Reese totally overblown?  Finally we wrap up discussing the key match-ups and players in this game and how both teams are really quite a bit different from what they were last year. 

The transfer portal is getting active in Iowa City, so we had to hop on and do a podcast to discuss the latest news, which was Patrick McCaffery entering the NCAA Portal on Wednesday. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo discuss the why it wasn't a surprise that McCaffery was entering the portal and how should his father address it if the topic is brought up by recruits.  We dive into the roster for next season for the Iowa basketball team and what are their portal needs for this year. What would the starting lineup look like as of today? What are the positions that need to be filled in the portal?  Then we discuss women's basketball and being at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this past weekend. Does the crowd support that the Iowa women have received shoot down the arguement that Carver-Hawkeye Arena is the problem with Iowa basketball attendance? It was a busy day on Sunday for both the Iowa men's and women's basketball teams. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann discuss the top news item of the day which as the Hawkeye women's basketball team earning a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Of course it's a challenging path for the Hawkeyes if they want to return to the Final Four, but the first two games would be in Iowa City. We look at their potential foes and the overall path.  We also discuss the overall tournament and fantasy book half the Final Four and some dream match-up's if the Hawkeyes make it all the way to Cleveland this year.  Then we move over to the men's team, who did not make the field for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years. After what appears to have been some late shifting in the field due to schools opting out of the National Invitational Tournament, Iowa will host Kansas State on Tuesday night. We take an early look at the Wildcats and their team this season along with the Hawkeyes potential post season path.  Finally we wrap up talking a little Iowa baseball after a good weekend that included three wins over Western Illinois and look ahead to this weekend at Purdue. 

With spring football starting up this week in Iowa City it's a great time to catch up with Chuck Long and discuss the offensive side of the ball. We open the show talking to Long about his work as the offensive coordinator for the Arlington Renegades and head coach Bob Stoops in the UFL and starting play in that league later this month.  Then we dive into the Hawkeyes and setting up a new offensive under Tim Lester. Long discusses Lester and the advantage of him being an experienced quarterback, along with a guy from the Chicago suburbs. We discuss the process of installing a new offense for the Hawkeyes and what that process is like both in the meeting room and then on the field.  We also look at the challenge of putting a new offense in place while expected starting quarterback Cade McNamara is likely sidelined this spring following ACL surgery last fall. How would a coordinator get him up to speed. What should Iowa do with their race to find a backup quarterback this season? Do you give more reps this spring to Marco Lainez?  Finally we talk about the new technology coming to college football with direct communication between coordinator and quarterback and the advantages that Iowa will have with Lester calling plays from the booth as opposed to being on the field.

Kyle Huesmann and Tom Kakert look back the Iowa women's basketball team winning their third straight Big Ten Tournament title, this one is dramatic fashion with seniors Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Gabbie Marshall making huge plays down the stretch in the come from behind win over Nebraska.  We talk about those key plays in the final minutes and how Iowa willed themselves to a victory and how much of a battle it really was. What about Lisa Bluder's comments about her bigs?  We then move over to discuss the Iowa men's basketball team and their loss at Illinois. The Hawkeyes were right there and then let it slip away late on the road. What did we learn about the Iowa team and do they need continued performances like this from Josh Dix? We also dove into the NCAA Tournament chances for the Hawkeyes, who are now moving up the charts in the final weeks. What type of finish gets them into the NCAA Tournament?  Then we wrap up talking about a tough weekend for Iowa baseball. The starting pitching was good. The hitting was good, but the bullpen work was not great. It is time to panic for the Iowa baseball team? What can be done in the short term to fix the bullpen? How important is the series this weekend at Ole Miss? We also drop in a short conversation on court storming and if the NCAA is officially just about done as an organization? 

The Hawkeyes and the Fighting Illini will tangle on the basketball court twice this weekend. With that in mind we had to bring on our good friend Kedric Prince on the podcast this week to talk about it. As usual, when we have Kedric on with us, the show goes off the rails early and often in the 30 minutes that went on the podcast.  We start with the men's side of the equation, which takes place on Saturday. We argue about the Illini fans complaining about officiating in the Big Ten after losses and what that defeat at Penn State means for the game on Saturday and if Iowa is in trouble because of it. We also discuss why we expect that Saturday's game will be high scoring because both teams struggle on defense.  Then things get controversial with Kedric discussing what he likes and doesn't like about Caitlin Clark's game and why the Fighting Illini women's team has struggled this season and what to expect on Sunday.

It was a historic night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and that means we had to do a podcast to talk about it. The history was made by All American Caitlin Clark, who not only scored eight quick points to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women's basketball history, but she also set a program record by finishing with 49 points.  Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann were at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Thursday evening to discuss the incredible performance from the All American guard and the post game celebration that brought out emotions from Clark and her family.  Then we wrap up the podcast with a quick preview of the opening weekend for the Iowa baseball team and what we are excited to watch from the Hawkeyes squad, who is favored to win the Big Ten this season. 

The Hawkeye Report Podcast is basketball heavy on a Wednesday night. First, Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo look back at Iowa's loss on the road to Maryland. The Hawkeyes built an early lead and held it until the middle of the second half before seeing their offense go sideways.  What did we see in the second half that was cause for concern? What about the disparity in foul shooting in the second half? Was that a factor in the outcome? Is Iowa basically down to playing six players most of the minutes and a few random minutes for the rest of the bench? Finally we discuss the upcoming schedule and if Iowa could make it into the field for the NIT this year. Then we talk about a couple of local Quad City prep players, including one that visited Iowa City on Sunday and a freshman hoops players that fans will want to keep tabs on in the future.  We then move on to discussing Caitlin Clark and the history that she will make on Thursday night in Iowa City when she becomes the all-time leading scorer in women's college basketball. What did Clark say on Wednesday and why is she able to be so relaxed about this accomplishment? Will Lisa Bluder call a timeout once Clark scores her eighth point against Michigan?  Finally we discuss Jon Budmayr being named Iowa's wide receivers coach. The reaction has been mixed at best, but should it be? 

It's a special edition of the podcast. We preview the most anticipated season of Iowa baseball in decades. The Hawkeyes are nationally ranked with one of the top starting rotations in all of college baseball and we tap into the knowledge of our baseball beat writer Kyle Huesmann and John Evans, who is on the call for the Iowa baseball radio broadcasts.  We start with the the pitching staff, led by the potential All American Brody Brecht and including Marcus Morgan. We discuss the entire staff and who might be helping out in the back end to close out games.  Then we discuss the situation at catcher with the starter out to begin the season. After that we go around a very strong group of infielders. How good can that group be and are they one of the best fielding groups in the conference? After that we take a look at the outfield group and how there are some stars that are emerging in those three spots. Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa football program has hired Tim Lester to lead the Hawkeye offense in 2024. We had our first chance to talk to Ferentz since the hire and meet Lester for the first time and ask him plenty of question. We review what happened at the Tuesday press conference with our good friend from the Des Moines Register, Chad Leistikow.  We dive deep into what Ferentz had to say on Tuesday and how it was somewhat different than the interview he gave Gary Dolphin late last week. How did that improve how Iowa fans are feeling about the hire of Lester.  We also look at what Lester had to say in his time at the podium. What it was important that he said he would be in the press box calling plays and what he said about the offense he plans to put together this fall in Iowa City.  Finally, we also discuss the news late today that Special Teams Coordinator Levar Woods interviewed with the Tampa Bay Bucs about their open special teams coaching position. What could it mean that he took that step? 

The news that Iowa has a new offensive coordinator went official on Wednesday. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo discuss the continued reaction to the hiring of Tim Lester. Why has it been mixed from Iowa fans and what should Hawkeye followers look to hear from the new coordinator and Kirk Ferentz when they meet with the media next week? What are two important things that Lester needs to accomplish this spring should Iowa hit the portal for a quarterback this spring? Then we discuss the vacant wide receiver coaching position and if there is a frontrunner for that job. After that we turn our attention to the Iowa basketball team. They had a shot to pull off a come from behind win at Indiana and let it get away late. Why is Iowa struggling to close out tight games? What needs to change on that front and why has Ben Krikke been struggling of late?  We also dive into Iowa's resume this year and project their record moving forward. The Iowa Hawkeyes have hired a new offensive coordinator and as promised that means we are doing an emergency podcast! Tom Kakert and Blair Sanderson for 30 minutes breaking down all the angles of this very interesting and up and down hiring of a new offenisve coordinator to guide the Iowa offense in 2024. We look at the background of Tim Lester and what he brings to the table from that perspective. We dive into the stats that he posted as a coordinator back when he was guiding the offense at Syracuse and then eventually becoming the head coach at his alma mater, Western Michigan. What do we think of his tenure leading the Broncos program and why he was dismissed after the 2022 season.  What were the offensive numbers they put up and what kind of an offense did Lester tend to run during his time as a head coach? Will we see more RPO looks from the Hawkeyes and is he a fan of complementary football, like KIrk Ferentz?

The Iowa women's basketball team knocked off Virginia Tech in Charlotte on Thursday night. It was a huge win for the Hawkeyes and another magical performance from Caitlin Clark and her teammates.  So, we thought let's talk about the 80-76 win on the podcast. We discuss the play of Clark and key plays from her teammates in the win over a fellow top ten squad. We highlight a huge stretch for Kylie Feuerbach, who had eight points in a short stretch, a strong performance before foul trouble from Hannah Stuelke, and a big defensive stop from Gabbie Marshall.  We also discuss, could Iowa be in line to move up to #1 in the country when the next poll comes out and their upcoming trip to Cedar Falls to play Northern Iowa on Sunday.  Then we talk a little field hockey as Iowa faces Louisville in Evanston on Friday in the NCAA Tournament. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo go deep into Brian Ferentz not returning as Iowa's offensive coordinator and Kirk Ferentz reaction to the news on Tuesday afternoon.  We discuss the process of how Beth Goetz came to the conclusion she did and if there were other parties involved in the decision. We look at how Kirk Ferentz spoke about the news today and why this is one of the few times in his 25 years at Iowa where he was not in control of his coaching staff. Could this be the potential end for Kirk Ferentz as Iowa's head coach? We then dive into potential candidates to replace Brian Ferentz as Iowa's offensive coordinator? Are there dream candidates and realistic choices? Which candidates on our hot board would be the most likely choices? Last year they played for an NCAA Title. What can they do for an encore? We look at the new look of the lineup and the importance for the bigs this year. We also talk about Caitlin Clark and what she can do to improve this season and become even better than the best player in women's college basketball.  Finally, we dive into the women's basketball schedule. What does Kyle has as his prediction for the team this year against a very challenging schedule of games? Then we take a deep dive into the Iowa men's team. It's a team that looks to replace several key contributors. Who will be the leading scorer this year? How will they make up for the loss of rebounding and who will it come from? What's the starting lineup going to look like and will it include Josh Dix at point guard? We also discuss the incoming freshman and what to expect from them. Finally we give our prediction for the season record and if they will make the NCAA Tournament.  We also talk some Iowa baseball and field hockey to wrap up the show.
