They all emerged during the same listening session, so I've made a show about them. It is truly an eclectic selection and includes some genres I don't often play. Country is represented by Patsy Cline (classic) and Garner Wayne (fair dinkum kiwi), Classical by Wagner (not Ride of the Valkyries) and Sousa (go on guess!). The truly strange is a selection from Electronic Music III (a James Joyce remix!). All this and more!

Known for both his musicianship and activism he is considered one of the most important drummers in jazz. For this show I have chosen discs where he is one of the headliners and tracks where he is one of the composers. This is the jazz my father loved, intellectual but not pretentious, and played with skill and passion.

Roger Chapman, the vocalist, was the consistent element in an otherwise changing melange of rock and blues musicians. In this show we draw on the albums Bandstand, Old Songs New Songs, A Song For Me and Fearless, with special guests the Streetwalkers. The show is roughly divided into two halves; Sober (prog and blues) and Unsober (rock). I rate Family as one of the best bands of their era, listen and find out why.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Teddy Wilson is considered to be the definitive swing pianist and featured on a great many albums over his career. He broke the colour bar when Benny Goodman employed him, becoming the one of the first black artists to play a featuring role in a 'mixed race' band. His special skill is to use his skills to support rather than shine and in this show we demonstrate this with his work with Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. We also let him show his talents as a soloist.

Hosted by Eddie and Glen. the Crusaders began as a purely jazz combo in 1960 but diversified into other musical forms during a career that lasted until 2010. In this episode we play some great smooth jazz, showcasing the albums Standing Tall (with Joe Cocker), Scratch (playing live) and Soul Shadows (all the hits, featuring Randy Crawford). We hope that you enjoy some jazzy balm for the ears.

The group grew out of the rhythm section of the Dizzy Gillespie Big band in the late 1940s and played elegant, restrained jazz until the final dissolution of the band in 1997. Hosted by Matt and Eddie. Return to Forever was the band that really popularised the merging jazz and other musical forms that became known as 'fusion.' Founded in 1972 by Chick Corea, the band bought to prominence musicians such as Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke. In this show we play tracks from both Return to Forever as well as solo pieces by band members (notably the Chick Corea track Return To Forever which started the whole shebang off). A founding member of the epochal jazz-fusion band Return to Forever (with Chick Corea and Al Di Meola) he went on to sell pout headline tours and make gold records. Featuring some great jazz as well as some superb funk Stanley brings the funky business like few other artists!

Forming his own band in the 1950's he made a number of albums and even had chart success with Conquistadores. Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Ben Webster was an American tenor saxophonist best known for his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He used the same saxophone (Ol' Betsy) from 1938 until his death in 1973. His delicate phrasing has to be heard to be believed, but he also earned the nickname "The Brute" for his abrasive personality after a few drinks. We play a selection of standards and Ellingtonia, featuring his signature tune Cotton Tail.

Hosted by Eddie. 23 Skidoo were a British band that formed in 1979 as a confluence of the industrial, independent and dance music genres. Bringing a sound heavily influenced by Middle Eastern and Asian music (especially percussion) their sound was like no other band of it's era. In this show we feature The Culling Is Coming a drum ritual that was performed at the first WOMAD Festival in 1982 (in Britain). Wild, unusual and deeply rhythmical this is truly music from the fringes.

In this show we bring the man known as 'Rabbit' out of the shadows and let his saxophone speak for itself. Hosted by Glen and Eddie. In 1977 Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks and founded his own band, Magazine. He wanted to explore new musical directions and recruited a very strong lineup to do this with. I have all four albums from their classic period (1977 - 1982) as well as the live album Play. Magazine did not last long but they left a great legacy that still stands up 40-odd years later.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. As if being a truly great jazz guitarist wasn't enough. Charlie Christian might not have been the first person to put an electric pickup on his guitar but his name goes down in history as the first lead guitarist. Starting with Benny Goodman's band he moved the guitar out of the rhythm section and made it a instrument for jazz solos in its own right. He never got to see the full effects of what he started but few people have influenced modern music to such a degree, a true innovator.

He was noted for his use of the space between the notes as well as the varied qualities of the notes themselves. This put him at odds with the prevailing bebop style of jazz but he made a space for himself within the jazz firmament. Beginning as a child he was a true multi-instrumentalist, continuing to play multiple instruments even after a stroke paralysed one side of his body. He began playing at 3 (!) and never learned to read music, playing by ear for his entire career. He came between the great players of the early jazz years (Fats Waller) and the virtuosos of the bebop era (Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson) and so fell into the shadow of both.

Hosted by Eddie. Dexter Gordon was an American jazz saxophonist who was considered among the most influential of the bebop era. Standing 6'6" tall he was known as 'Long Tall Dexter' and had a genial and humorous stage presence. In this edition of the Audio Archive we feature him with another expert saxophonist, James Moody, in the sessions that came to be dubbed the 'Tower of Power.' Enjoy some great jazz played by some of the best!

An eclectic music (and sometimes comedy) show from Eddie, Matt, and Glen and their extensive vinyl collections, produced by Manawatū People's Radio with support from New Zealand On Air.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. This episode of the Audio Archive features the soundtracks from four great films. Cinema and music have always been closely linked, but in some films the music plays a major role and we have selected two pairs of great films. In the first half we feature the Blues Brothers (starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) and the Jim Jarmusch film Mystery Train, playing some classic R&B, Rock and Roll and Blues.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. Japan were an English band that formed in Catford (South London) in 1974. The name was initially a placeholder until the band could think of something else, they never did. Associated with the New Wave movement more because of their clothes and manner rather than their music, which had more depth and nuance than many other bands of that genre.

Hosted by Eddie. The Jazz Crusaders formed in 1960 and shortened their name to widen their appeal in 1971. They were able to play in many styles and reached their commercial apex with the 1979 release Street Life featuring Randy Crawford on vocals. This show features tracks from Soul Shadows (a Japanese compilation), Free As The Wind and Scratch (a live set). Scratch is notable as the cover is bright pink, a visual pun, as it is the colour of Pepto-Bismol an American brand of antacid.

Hosted by Matt, Glen and Eddie. At the Audio Archive we love complex music and one of these genres is Prog(ressive) Rock. Expanding on the basic forms of rock and blues music Prog takes in many other musical styles and adds extra artistic elements. This show is one of a series in which we explore this fascinating music, one hour at a time. In this episode we feature Family, Isotope, Spirit, Jack Bruce, Laura Nyro and Genesis.

Hosted by Glen and Eddie. On the Audio Archive we have a number of artists that we return to again and again. Bud Powell, a fantastically talented jazz pianist, is one of those. His influence on the world of jazz is enormous but he is almost unknown outside of that. This is yet another chance to hear one of the absolute best pianists I have had the privilege of listening to as he plays a selection of standards and his own compositions.

Hosted by Eddie. In the late 1970's/early 1980's the music scene in New York was extremely diverse and we try to capture some of that feel in this show. The first half of the show features Sugar Hill records (and the birth of Hip-Hop) while the second part covers acts that appeared at the infamous CBGB's club. Featuring an array of acts such as Blondie, the Ramones, Grandmaster Flash, Television, Talking Heads and Kid Creole and the Coconuts. This show can only scratch the surface of 80's NY.

Hosted by Eddie. With the dissolution of the sex Pistols, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) formed a veritable supergroup to further his musical ambitions. His aim was to create an anti-rock band to play anti-music. In this episode we track the early years of Public Image Limited (PiL). We showcase the self-titled first album, Second Edition (also released as Metal Box in a metal box) and also take a listen to the late 80's album Happy?

We are taking two very different artists (Robert Palmer and the Meters) and showcasing them using the point at which they connected (Allen Toussaint - New Orleans Producer/Composer). His great talent, refusal to compromise his artistic integrity and volcanic temper led to many fraught scenes, on-stage eruptions and arguments and even fistfights with his fellow musicians.
