Thomas & Uber Cup

Weekly Update, Video Analysis & More...

Here's this weeks podcast which offers a weekly update from training, a look ahead to my second league match of the season and a couple of patron-questions. I'll answer questions about how much video analysis is being used by me (and other pros) in the game, what my one rep max is in squat (and talk a bit more about my weights programme) and what I think of livedraws being done by hand as a possible event for BWF to look into. In this episode I also mention a company called Clutch who uses AI to do video analysis. This is not sponsored or anything, but I still urge you to go check them out on instagram. Their handle is @theclutchapp. Very interesting company with great potential to grow in my opinion. My Coaching Role & Using Cheap Tactics?

Here's the weekly podcast from me.  Not a lot to report about from on court as I'm still on a mini holiday, but this podcast looks ahead to my first league match of the season on Saturday.  I also get into a couple of questions about my coaching role on the Danish team/club I'm representing this season and my thoughts on using "cheap" tactics like time wasting, breaking your opponents momentum etc. Hope you find it interesting - and please don't hesitate to ask or comment here below if there's anything from the episode you want to hear more about or further explained. Oh and by the way, this episode also reveals the two winners of my signed game shirts! :-) If you also want to be in with a chance of winning my shirts or get other cool benefits like one on one videocalls with me or even feedback on your own game from me, please go check out the possibilities on patreon.com/vittinghus. Toby Penty - Dealing With Alopecia & Getting Past That Final Hurdle

I love this episode a lot as I really find Toby's story so inspiring. Having to deal with a full loss of all his hair on his entire body with all the mental issues it brings along with it and trying to be the best version of yourself on court certainly haven't been easy for him. But he says himself he's now at a better place than he even was before being diagnosed with alopecia - get the full reason why in this episode. Lots of other interesting topics as well, like why he's training most of the time at his own club, Wimbledon, instead of the national centre in Milton Keynes.  We also go into the story behind his rather odd finals statistics at internatonal level where he started off 0 for 6, but then reeled off 5 straight wins! All this and much more in this 1-hour episode. I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed chatting to Toby. Kim Astrup - Tribute To Markis Kido & Much More

Today's episode features Danish doubles ace and good friend of mine, Kim Astrup! This is one of the few guest episodes actually recorded sitting right across each other, so please excuse us for the little bit of background noise for a few very short sections of the interview. We mainly focused our chat on the Tokyo Olympics and on getting a deeper understanding of Kim's (and his doubles partner Anders Skaarup Rasmussen) mentality on court, but we touched on several other topics as well. We obviously also had to pay tribute to the legend Markis Kido, who sadly passed away at age 36 on June 14th. Below is a short rundown of the different main topics during our talk: 2.45-7.15 Tribute to Markis Kido. 7.15-19.45 Tokyo Olympics, preparations, expectations, goals and what Mathias Boe has taught him. 19.45-38.00 Being controlled by your emotions, dealing with pressure and expectations from yourself and others and why finding the right mindset every single time is so tricky. 38.00-41.30 Modelling tips from the main model of the Danish team & how Kim suddenly realized he’s now one of the old guys! 41.30-43.35 Tips for left/right handed combinations. 43.35-48.10 Kim and Anders’ relationship, future and why he’s calling Anders Badminton’s Benjamin Buttons! 48.10-49.50 How much training is done with and without your partner as a doubles pairing. Hope you all enjoy the episode! It's all in this podcast along with a lot more - and some fun stories about how entering USA was quite chaotic, not just once, but twice... New Scoring System?

This episode is a little different than usual as it is a part of an interview I did with the guys at The Badminton Podcast some weeks ago. In this part of the interview I share my take on the new proposed scoring system, which is very likely to be agreed upon at the BWF AGM on May 22nd. Get to know why I'm more concerned about the possible effects it might have on recreational/lower level badminton than it will on the professional level. I also share why I actually disagree with some of my colleagues on weather or not we should have had a bigger say in the matter - and why I think, if you are against the change, it's a little unfair to "blame" BWF if it gets voted through! Thanks for listening and please consider becoming a supporter of the podcast on patreon.com/vittinghus if you value the content. Ville Lång - Playing To Your Strengths

Finally back with about guest episode and this time with the highly entertaining Ville Lång from Finland! Ville is a former world no. 21 in men's singles who retired in 2016, but before doing so, he managed to win 15 international titles and 10 Finnish national championships in a row! In this episode we talk a lot about how he tried to beat players, who he saw as superior players in terms of skill, by playing a lot of mind games and dominate them in the mental game. We also dig into some of his career highlights like beating Tzu Wei Wang in the final of Scottish Open after being 4 matchpoints down - and another epic comeback at the Swedish Masters 2014. Generally this is an episode full of fun anecdotes and stories, which is no surprise as Ville is one of the most charismatic players on the badminton tour the past couple of decades. Special Guest Episode - Jakob Hansen, Sports Psychologist

This is an episode I've really looked forward to share with you guys! Jakob Hansen was my personal sports psychologist for more than 5 years and he has worked with so many of the best Danish athletes and high performers from other areas of work. It's my hope the episode will give you a much better insight into what mental training at this level is, how we work with it and how useful it can be in all aspects of life. The episode is full of small anecdotes from my work with Jakob both at home in training, but also at big events like Thomas Cup and World Championships. You'll also get some tips on how to best get started with mental training and what you need to do and be wary of if you want to be successful with the training. At the end Jakob also willingly replies to some great listener questions - amongst others one about how to stay focused in the end of matches when you need to close out a match. I really do hope you'll find this episode both interesting, but also helpful, so please let me know what you think!   If you want to get in touch with Jakob, check out his website: https://www.doubleyou-partners.com/konsulenter/jakob-hansen/ or send him an email at [email protected]. One of his great books is available on: https://www.underpres.dk/ - so far only in Danish, but it is being translated, so stay tuned for an English version.

Special Guest Episode - Gail Emms

Apart from revealing the winner of my November competition amongst all patrons (patreon.com/vittinghus) - this episode features a brutally honest Gail Emms on both the highs and the lows of being a world class athlete. Get to know what huge lesson she learned after losing the Olympic final in 2004 and how that spurred her on to more success than ever the following years. But you'll also learn how and why Gail struggled with finding her place after her playing days were over - and what she is looking towards in the future. Furthermore she explains why she is currently not part of the world of badminton and why we do need more female coaches at the top level. All of this and much more, like stories on what it's like to share a room with the very person you're set to play a World Championship final against and how working in a bar is not exactly what some people seem to expect of a former World Champion and Olympic silver medalist. Gail has a both interesting and important story to tell, so I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed talking to her. Oh and by the way - check out Gail’s newest project, a quiz book: https://www.desiredreamvision.store/product-page/gail-emms-ultimate-pub-sports-quiz Support the podcast to get early access to all guest episodes and get a great chance to win prizes each month at: patreon.com/vittinghus

Special Guest Episode - Anders Antonsen

What an episode! Anders Antonsen gives a very honest and unique look into his mindset, which will leave you with no doubt why he is currently one of the very best badminton players on the planet! When asked about his self confidence, Anders counters with a smirky "Why wouldn't I be confident? I've always been very good at badminton!" - which already tells you a lot about an athlete with a mind perfectly set up for world class performance. The bigger the occasion Anders seem to grow stronger and stronger, but in no way does Anders think he knows it all, he's just confident in finding the right solutions with the team around him and in this podcast you get the full explanation behind why that is. We also discuss the importance of having a training set up like he does at the Danish National training centre and how the constant sparring and pressure has animated him to do better. Finally we talk YouTube as we all miss his vlog's - just as there's time for a couple of mixed listener questions at the end! Enjoy - and if you do, please leave a rating and a review or share the podcast! It helps a great deal in terms of getting the podcast out to even more badminton lovers! This episode of the podcast has another former world no. 2 as a guest! This time it's the wonderful Pi Hongyan from France. We also talk about Hongyan's biggest achievements, how playing style might have been a factor in her being very succesful in European tournaments and the disappointment of losing 21-19 in the third game of the quarter final in the Beijing Olympics.
