About PORT OF Est
It is often said that the greatest inspiration comes to you when you’re not looking for it. Almost meditative, in the space between the quiet subconscious and creative ambition, it waits for us. Thoughts buried deep within come to the surface and enact their own scenes, giving shape to your untold story. Portland Maine's Port of Est is a soundtrack and score born out of this place. This experimental/electronic pop duo is ideal for channeling your next scene, and a worthy accomplice as you trek through the depths of your own subconscious.Formed in 2013, PoE is the creative alliance of vocalist Hannah Tarkinson and producer Todd Kitchens, one that speaks fluently in the dialects of multiple influences such as IDM, drum and bass, shoegaze, hip hop, electronic pop, ambient, folk, and indie rock.“It took us about a year to figure out how to work together in a way that respected each other's tastes,” explains Kitchens, “and most importantly respected the music and where it wanted to go.” The project emerged out of Kitchens’ frequent collaborations with a pair of Atlanta-based musicians whom he had worked with on and off for over a decade. Tarkinson then added her fairytale-esque vocal approach to Kitchens' electro idiosyncrasies."We want people to feel like they stumbled upon a sonic landscape that is both subtle and blindingly intense," the duo explains. Moody and luminous, Port of Est transposes their cinematic nature in their debut track "Valentine In My Headphones," precursor to the duo’s forthcoming full-length release. Port of Est delivers with a synth-layered and rhythmically complex machine giving way to a melodically lush vocal humanity. “Our music is electronic at its core, but has an unmistakable analog vibe,” Kitchens says. “This allows us to maintain a hands-on creative approach that provides room for spontaneity and fresh ideas.” This collision of nature and nurture creates a unique tension and synthesis that resolves in the listener becoming part of the narrative. The very essence of compelling cinema.
