WIND, SAND AND STARS | Saint-Exupéry | DESERT SURVIVAL STORY
On 30 December 1935, at 2:45 am, after 19 hours and 44 minutes in the air, Saint-Exupéry, along with his mechanic-navigator André Prévot, crashed in the Libyan desert, during an attempt to break the speed record in a Paris-to-Saigon air race and win a prize of 150,000 francs. Both Saint-Exupéry and Prévot miraculously survived the crash, only to face rapid dehydration in the intense desert heat. Their maps were primitive and ambiguous, leaving them with no idea of their location.Lost among the sand dunes, their sole supplies consisted of some grapes, two oranges, a madeleine, a pint of coffee in a battered thermos and a half pint of white wine in another. They also had with them a small store of medicine: "a hundred grammes of ninety percent alcohol, the same of pure ether, and a small bottle of iodine."The pair had only one day's worth of fluids. They both saw mirages and experienced auditory hallucinations, which were quickly followed by more vivid hallucinations. By the second and third day, they were so dehydrated that they stopped sweating. On the fourth day, a Bedouin on a camel discovered them and administered a native rehydration treatment that saved their lives. [281 The near brush with death would figure prominently in his 1939 memoir, Wind, Sand and Stars, winner of several awards. Saint-Exupéry's classic novella The Little Prince, which begins with a pilot being stranded in the desert, is, in part, a reference to this experience.

Subantarctic Islands 3
Subantarctic islands are the islands situated near another continental mainland or on another continental plate, but biogeographically linked to the Antarctic and are part of the Antarctic realm, roughly north of and adjacent to the Antarctic Convergence. The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands consist of five island groups (the Snares, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands and Campbell Island) in the Southern Ocean south-east of New Zealand. The islands, lying between the Antarctic and Subtropical Convergences and the seas, have a high level of productivity, biodiversity, wildlife population densities and endemism among birds, plants and invertebrates. They are particularly notable for the large number and diversity of pelagic seabirds and penguins that nest there.

Black Bart | History of Pirate Bartholomew Roberts
Black Bart, also known as Bartholomew Roberts, was a Welsh pirate who operated during the early 18th century. Born around 1682 in Pembrokeshire, Wales, Roberts began his life at sea as a merchant seaman but later turned to piracy. He is considered one of the most successful pirates in history, capturing over 400 ships during his career.
Roberts started his pirating career in 1718 when he joined a pirate ship captained by Howell Davis. After Davis was killed in battle, Roberts took command of the ship and renamed it Royal Fortune. He became known for his cunning and strategic approach to piracy, often targeting ships carrying valuable goods and using his fleet to attack vessels on multiple coasts.
Roberts was a charismatic leader who implemented a code of conduct that emphasized democracy and equality among his crew members. He also provided medical insurance and ensured that his crew received a fair share of the plunder. Despite his success, Roberts was eventually killed in battle by a British ship off the coast of Guinea in 1722.
Black Bart's legacy extends beyond his pirating exploits. He is often credited with creating the image of pirates that we know today, including the iconic Jolly Roger flag and the character of a ruthless but charismatic leader

Molecules of Death | History of Arsenic
Arsenic compounds have been known since ancient times, with the word "arsenic" originating from the Greek word arsenikon, meaning "yellow orpiment". The element itself was possibly first observed in the 13th century by Albertus Magnus, who noted a metal-like substance when heating the mineral arsenicum.
In the 17th-19th centuries, arsenic was frequently used for murder due to the lack of specific symptoms and the difficulty in detecting it. It became known as the "poison of kings" and the "king of poisons". Arsenic was also used in the Victorian era by women to improve their complexion, leading to accidental poisonings.
Arsenic compounds began to be used in agriculture as insecticides, herbicides and wood preservatives in the late 19th century. In 1900, Paul Ehrlich developed the first effective arsenic-based drug, Salvarsan, to treat syphilis. Arsenic was also used as a war gas called Lewisite during WWII, leading to the development of the antidote British Anti-Lewisite (BAL).
Today, arsenic is still used in some pesticides and wood preservatives, but its use has declined due to toxicity concerns. The element itself is produced by heating arsenopyrite ore in the absence of air. While arsenic has a long history of use, its toxicity has also made it notorious as a deadly poison throughout the centuries.

The Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition refers to a scientific expedition that took place in 1913-1914 in the Amazon rain forest. Led by former US President Theodore Roosevelt and Brazilian explorer Colonel Candido Rondon, the expedition aimed to explore and map the River of Doubt (later renamed Roosevelt River) in the Brazilian state of Rondonia.
The expedition was arduous and faced numerous challenges, including navigating treacherous waters, fighting off deadly animals and insects, and dealing with diseases like malaria. Several members of the expedition fell ill and died, while others suffered injuries or had to turn back.
The expedition was also significant in terms of scientific discoveries. It documented various species of plants and animals that were previously unknown to science. The team encountered indigenous tribes along the way and made efforts to establish peaceful relations and gather information about their way of life.
The Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition played a crucial role in highlighting the environmental and cultural importance of the Amazon rainforest. It helped raise public awareness about the need for conservation efforts and paved the way for further scientific exploration in the region.

The Narváez expedition was a Spanish journey of exploration and colonization started in 1527 that intended to establish colonial settlements and garrisons in Florida. The expedition was initially led by Pánfilo de Narváez, who died in 1528. Many more people died as the expedition traveled west along the explored Gulf Coast of the present-day United States and into the American Southwest. Only four of the expedition's original members survived, reaching Mexico City in 1536. These survivors were the first known non-Native Americans to see the Mississippi River, and to cross the Gulf of Mexico and Texas. This podcast is about their brutal journey.

Children's Blizzard hit the U.S. plains states on January 12, 1888. The blizzard came unexpectedly on a relatively warm day, and many people were caught unaware, including children in one-room schoolhouses. What made the storm so deadly was the timing (during work and school hours), the suddenness of the storm, and the brief spell of warmer weather that preceded it. In addition, the very strong wind fields behind the cold front and the powdery nature of the snow reduced visibilities on the open plains to zero. People ventured from the safety of their homes to do chores, go to town, attend school, or simply enjoy the relative warmth of the day. As a result, thousands of people—including many schoolchildren—got caught in the blizzard.
