Bestselling Author Max Altschuler on Growing SalesHacker From Side Project to $3 Million in Revenue
In today’s episode, we’re talking to bestselling author Max Altschuler, the CEO of SalesHacker, author of Hacking Sales and his brand new book coming in March 2018—called Career Hacking for Millennials. Max has helped build 3 multi-million dollar businesses today and he still has his hand in a LOT of different companies… whether they’re side projects like his new venture, Sutra Coffee or as an investor or advisor to nearly 40 SaaS startups. Originally from Long Island, New York… Max went to college at Arizona State University where he got his first real taste of business. He and a few friends won a business plan competition, got a $2,000 grant, and started building out a campus-wide bike-sharing program that was backed by the university… but this was 2009 and the US was in the depths of one of the deepest recessions we’ve seen in nearly a lifetime. So, Max and his partners couldn’t get funding for their business and they had to close down shop. He learned a lot from this first experience and it eventually brought him to San Francisco where he worked for the online education startup, Udemy as their very first sales hire. After spending a couple years building out the company’s sales process, Max launched a side project called SalesHacker—a live event that netted him a $60,000 profit on his first go-round. Pretty shortly thereafter, he dove head first into growing SalesHacker into the business it is today… generating over $3 Million in annual revenue from events, media partnerships, sponsors, and products… on top of that, they’re bringing in over 100,000 monthly readers. Growing that business has led Max to launching more side projects like Sutra Coffee—a h

Building an $85,000/mo SaaS Side Project with Jan Schulz-Hofen of Planio
In today’s episode, we’re talking to Jan Schulz-Hofen, the co-founder and managing director at Planio, a project management platform that’s build to make team & client collaboration more efficient and fun. What I like most about Planio, is that the company actually started as a side project—and is today bringing in nearly $85,000 in monthly recurring revenue… which is over $1 Million/year. About 10 years ago, Jan was in the middle of running his own web design & development agency in Berlin, called Launch Co. They partnered with clients like Software AG, Enterprise Rails, and Font Shop to help build and launch Ruby on Rails applications… and all the while, Jan’s team was constantly launching their own side projects—knowing they’d want to get into running a product-focused business, rather than being service providers forever. So naturally, Planio was born out of their drive to create a solution to a consistent problem they were seeing with their clients… they’d help clients build and launch new projects, but after that… many of them didn’t have a good process in place for continuing to manage those new projects. So, Jan and his team built Planio… and they got their first customers for the product by selling it to their existing pool of web development clients. Going on almost 7 years with Planio now, they’ve been steadily growing their revenue and team…

Chase is a multi-dimensional guy, and before founding CreativeLive—he was a serious college athlete on track to head to med school. But at that same time, Chase decided to pick up the camera his late grandfather had left him… he began shooting images of friends out skating & snowboarding and eventually started to get paid for his photographs. Chase has built an incredible career for himself as an award-winning photographer, director, and artist. He’s done photography work for companies like Apple, Google, Red Bull, Microsoft and literally dozens of other household brands & sports figures. In fact a little over 10 years ago, he was completely broke and living on his sister’s couch—not even able to afford rent. Originally from a small town in Ohio, Lewis got into sports in high school… and pretty quickly excelled on the football field. He went on to play professional arena football, but an injury landed him out of the sport permanently. After taking some time to recover, get back on his feet, and begin figuring out what he wanted to do with his life now that football was out of the picture, Lewis turned back to his interest in sports marketing and began combining that with social media… Pretty soon, he launched his first business as a LinkedIn consultant and about the same time began sharing publicly about his life & business over on his blog. Buffer CEO Joel Gascoigne: From Side Project to $1 Million Per Month in Revenue
In today’s episode, we’re talking to Joel Gascoigne, the co-founder and CEO at Buffer—the social media management tool for small businesses. That product now has over 75,000 customers—the company has 70 employees, and they’re bringing in over $1.3 Million in revenue each month. Perhaps what I like most about Joel and how he got Buffer off the ground in the early days… is that he was incredibly systematic and disciplined with how he validated the idea for the product. The very first thing he did was build a super simple landing page with nothing more than a description of the product with a call-to-action button that people would have to click on in order to sign up—but instead of taking these early visitors to the actual product—that didn’t yet exist—it directed them to another landing page where they could enter their email address for early access when Buffer did launch. After about a month of promoting this landing page to his audience on Twitter and through HackerNews, Joel had 120 signed up… and the rest is history. He continued working on Buffer as a side project for the next month or so, brought on his first round of paying customers, and within another 6 months they’d climbed up to around 100,000 users… most of which were on the free plan, but many of whom would later upgrade.

And it was during her studies that she started getting into infographics—first as a way to visually help herself understand the course material better, and then she started creating infographics to generate interest for startup events she was organizing with friends called Funders and Founders. In today’s episode, we’re talking to Jordan Jones, who started Packed Party - her company that sells highly curated gift boxes like birthday packages that feature confetti, champagne glasses, bath bombs, earrings and a hand-lettered card.
Whatever the occasion, she has a party package to match. Now in Austin, Texas, Jordan actually started the company back in 2013 while she was working a full-time job here in San Francisco.
The idea for Packed Party came to Jordan one night while she was sitting in her bedroom, on the phone with her mom complaining about her draining job and when her mom told her she needed to stop having a pity party for herself, a lightbulb went off, she thought, hey there might actually be something there around the idea of having a literal pity party and so the concept for her first package was born (the Pity Party Box—which comes with candy chill pills, a mini piñata filled with lemon candies, a handwritten card from the sender and other goodies).
Shortly after getting her idea off the ground, Jordan got an order from a mutual friend to create 10 party packages for a bridesmaids party… and she kept growing from there. Noah Kagan on Being Selfish, Side Projects, and Making $1,000 in 24hrs on a Brand New Idea
In this episode, we’re talking to Noah Kagan, the founder of 2 multi-million dollar businesses: Appsumo and Sumo.com. For being just 35 years old, Noah’s got a pretty insane life story already and we’re digging into everything in this episode.
Noah was employee #30 at Facebook (which as of today is valued at $432B), but he got fired after less than a year there before any of his stock vested, so he walked away with nothing.
During his time at Facebook, he was also working on his very first side hustle—a conference for young entrepreneurs that netted him $50,000 in profit.
Next, he landed as the director of marketing, employee #7 at Mint, the personal finance app, before they even launched and long before they’d go on to be purchased by Intuit for $170M.
But again, Noah left before any of his stock vested at the company, walking away with nothing for the second time.
So how’d that pan out for Noah? Well, he went on to turn down an acquisition offer for $100,000 plus equity for his game company (while he was still working full-time at Mint). This offer would’ve been worth somewhere between $8-10 Million today.
Instead, Noah eventually sold his game company for around $10,000 after it was clear only a few of them were really taking off.

A Radically New Definition for the Word “Business” (and How to Find the Right Idea)
Now, to get this started… I want to offer up a radically new definition for you—of what a business really is. A new take on how you should think about being an entrepreneur. I’m going to argue that a business is nothing more than a “format for channeling your skills, experience, abilities, and interests—into a neat little package that helps people accomplish something meaningful.”
In today’s episode, we’re talking about one of the most common questions I get from friends, family, and readers on my blog—the question comes in various different forms, but it always boils down to, “How do I find a profitable side hustle idea?”
