About
Katie here! I’ve had a weird obsession with true crime since I was a girl. I remember watching forensic files by 10 (not your average Disney fan girl like ever). The funniest thing that ever happened to me was when I tried to write a research paper on Ted Bundy, at 13, it freaked my teacher out, she called my dad worried. My dad told her I wasn’t interested in things other people perceived as intriguing. He was right, and still was more than 10 years later. Part of me feels like I can solve these cases myself, so join me as I try to. Therapy (sorta) and mediocre comedy included. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/suspectpodcast/support

62 - This Guy!

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, collectively referred to as the Menendez brothers, are American brothers and convicted murderers who killed their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. The defense argued that the brothers killed their parents out of fear their father would kill them after years of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. Meanwhile, the prosecution claimed that the motive was to inherit their father's multimillion-dollar estate.I’ve sure you’ve all seen SOMETHING on the Menendez brothers at this point. Let’s discuss what took place in 1989 and how biased I believe the system was - with sexual abuse against men at the time. You know I have to chat about my blondest moment of the week, pre case. https://www.encyclopedia.com/law/law-magazines/menendez-brothers-trials-1993-94-1995-96https://www.crimelibrary.org/notorious_murders/famous/menendez/trial_16.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyle_and_Erik_Menendezhttps://innocenceproject.org/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/suspectpodcast/support

55 - Borrow Somebody’s Login

Natalia Grace Barnett (born September 4, 2003) is a Ukrainian-born American with dwarfism, who, in 2010, was adopted by an American family but abandoned by them two years later. Barnett's adoptive parents claimed that Barnett was a legal adult, and, in 2012, they successfully sought a court order legally changing her birth year from 2003 to 1989. However, an August 2023 DNA test by TruDiagnostic confirmed that Grace was about 20 years old, meaning she was around 9 years old when her adoptive parents abandoned her. 51 - The NFL Has Inconvenienced Me

Starting off the episode with an embarrassing story time; yes, it’s been weeks and I’m still not over it. Also, do you guys think I should send the NFL an invoice for ruining my birthday weekend? Let me know. This week we’re discussing John Battaglia, a convicted murderer executed by the state of Texas for filicide in 2018. Just an awful story, devastating. This prompted Texas Senate Bill 1408 (SB 140), passed by the Seventy-Seventh Texas Legislature. The bill had two main purposes: (1) to give direction to judges "regarding the appointment of sole custody in family violence cases," and (2) to change the way Texas courts handle visitation when a parent has a history of domestic violence. 34 - Circumstantial, But Not

I’m baaaaack. We’re jumping right back into things this week, without missing a beat. In 1988, Walter McMillian, was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death in Monroeville, Alabama. His trial lasted less than two days, and although the jury recommended life imprisonment - the judge overruled and sentenced him to death. From beginning to end of this “investigation”, there is NO evidence connecting Walter McMillian to the murder - the police simply wanted to write the narrative for a successful black man. David and Louise Turpin, severely neglected and abused their 13 children - from ages 2 to 29 years old. This abuse included: chaining their children to their beds, not allowing them to bathe more than once a year, restricting them from obtaining any education - even creating false homeschool documents, and more. 5 - Spoiler Alert: Corrupt

HI FRIENDS. This week Katie and Hannah talk legal system failures. As you can tell by the title of this episode, there may or may not be a wee bit of corruption involved. Tap in, let's see. Katie shares the case of James Joseph Richardson -  wrongfully convicted of the 1967 murders of his 7 children. Hannah shares David Camm's case - who was also wrongfully convicted but TWICE for the murders of his wife and two children in 2000. New segment alert: We speak early in the episode about starting a new segment where we connect with individuals who have had personal experiences to a crime, case, or any kind of story that would fit our true crime niche. A few days after recording the initial episode Katie was able to connect with Kristin, who was a victim of sexual assault 11 years ago. Kristen shares her experience and how she was able to process the awful situation she had been through, then how she able to grow and find peace through the brokenness. Katie may have cried silently on mute during the conversation...but wow strong women are amazing, am I right?!
