75,000 Aussies could be forced to drop Private Health Insurance
Private Health Insurance companies are warning more than 75,000 NSW residents would be forced to drop private health cover if the state government hikes taxes on insurers. Health Minister Ryan Park last week introduced legislation which would allow the government to increase the health insurance levy by almost 85 per cent following a stoush over the price insurers should pay for a private bed in public hospitals. Luke Grant chats with Private Health Australia CEO, Dr Rachel David about modelling which says the tax would increase costs to almost $670 million over four years and force insurers to increase their premiums.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Woke protestors spoil Royal’s first Australian appearance
King Charles III and Queen Camilla have made their first public appearance since touching down in Sydney, attending a service at St Thomas’ Anglican Church in North Sydney. They were greeted by warm weather and scorns of adoring fans, hoping for a chance to see the royal couple. However, amidst all the positivity and fanfare, anti-colonisation protesters have also been sited at the events chanting slogans including: “he is not our king” and “no pride in genocide”. Luke Grant chats with 2GB Royal Correspondent Katie Fuller to see if these protesters have managed to soil what should otherwise be an historic occasion.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The militant group blamed its adversary, Israel, however Israeli officials have so far declined to comment. Will China reverse the ban on Australian lobsters?
Australian rock lobster fishermen are growing increasingly frustrated and uncertain about lingering Chinese government trade restrictions, months after the federal government declared they were “very confident” the restrictions were on the brink of ending. In late 2020, China's customs agency blocked live rock lobsters from Australia – citing excessive levels of a heavy metal — as part of a wide-ranging campaign of trade coercion against the Morrison government. The move crippled the crayfish industry, with Chinese exports accounting for 90% of its revenue. Beijing has since lifted the vast majority of those trade barriers, including hefty tariffs on barley and Australian wine, as Jim Chalmers is scheduled to become the first Australian treasurer to visit China in seven years. Bill Woods chats with China Trade Expert, Andrew Phelan, formerly of DFAT to find out why the industry is so reliant on Chinese exports and why we aren’t able to replicate the revenue domestically?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“It’s a joke” - Government rejects important consumer protections in Aviation White Paper
The Labor government will not introduce a European Union-style scheme to compensate airline passengers for disruptions and delays despite public outcry and calls from the competition regulator after chronic poor performance by Qantas last year. European airlines must compensate passengers when their flight is delayed or cancelled, or if they were denied boarding, if they reach their final destination more than three hours later than scheduled. Luke Grant chats with Frequent Flyer Editor Matt Graham about how successful the European model has been and the inefficiencies of Transport Minister Catherine King's proposal to implement an ombudsman who has powers to force airlines and airports to follow their own terms and conditions, particularly relating to refunds. Class Action beckons for potentially carcinogenic popular medications
Over-the-counter medications for heartburn, reflux and morning sickness are at the centre of a class action investigation over alleged links to stomach cancer and kidney damage that could involve an estimated 100,000 Australians. Patients who have used proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to treat digestive issues, and subsequently developed gastric cancer or kidney damage, may be entitled to compensation should the investigation proceed to litigation. Luke Grant spoke with Special Counsel Lorne Franks, of Shine Lawyers who are investigating the Class Action, to discuss which specific medications are being investigated, what the research says about the links between PPis with kidney damage and stomach cancers and who is eligible to submit to be part of the Class Action.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The ending of men's health week isn't the end of men speaking up when they’re experiencing mental health issues.
While an increase in initiatives and media discussion around men's mental health have led to more men speaking up, there remains considerable work to be done to resolve gender inequity in this space.
The number of suicide deaths remain approximately three times higher in males than females and men are far more likely to die as a result of alcohol and drug use.
Only a quarter of men said they would be likely or very likely to seek help from a mental health professional if they experienced an emotional or personal problem and almost 25% said they would not seek help from anyone.
Doctor Cate Howell OAM is a GP, therapist, and educator. She works as a General Practitioner with Defence, and also has a private practice focusing on mental health and various teaching activities.
She also co-authored a book with her son called The Changing Man: A Mental Health Guide.
She joined Luke Grant to discuss how the taboo around men's mental health is starting to dissipate and what still needs to be done to stop the horrific phenomenon of people taking their own lives.
If you or someone you know is suffering there are many places to go for help including…

Treasurer Daniel Moohkey’s new NSW budget set to increase record deficit.
NSW Treasurer Daniel Moohkey's new budget is set to increase the state’s deficit to just under $10 billion when it is unveiled on Tuesday.
NSW has been deep in deficit for five years, the longest spell of negative budget balances in living memory.
The state's financial woes were exacerbated by the controversial carve up of the GST by the Albanese Government earlier this year, in which NSW received its lowest share of revenue since the scheme's introduction more than 20 years ago.
Nevertheless, the government has already announced big spending measures on key state issues including health, housing and education.
Luke Grant grilled Daniel Moohkey on how the state ended up in this unfortunate financial position, how we can afford the billions spent in announcements and what the plan is to get the books back in the black.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chris Minns silent on MPs caught up in “greenwashing scandal”
It was revealed this week that state Labor MP’s Karen Mckeown and Nathan Haggarty were on the board of Active Super, which was found by the Federal Court to have engaged in a phenomenon known as “Greenwashing”.
The court said the Superfund had misled and deceived investors by claiming it had eliminated its members’ exposure to gambling, coal and Russian companies, when it in fact, had multiple investments in these industries.
As directors, Mckeown and Haggarty were pocketing $200 thousand a year, on top of their already lucrative parliamentary salaries.
It has since been revealed that Karen Mckgeown voted in favour of a rezoning proposal within the funds investment portfolio while she was Penrith Mayor.

Locals outraged after Chris Bowen approves controversial offshore wind farm in the Illawarra
Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen has approved a controversial offshore wind farm that stretches from Wombarra to Kiama on the NSW South Coast, ignoring fierce opposition from locals and environmentalists.
The proposed area covers 1,461km and will involve the construction of 300 industrial wind turbines, standing at 260 metres.
But several local and environmental groups claim the farm will impact the migration paths of up to 40,000 whales as well as affecting birds, increasing underwater noise, light emissions, vessel interactions, disturbances to the seabed and creating an electromagnetic field.
They are also sceptical of Mr Bowens claims the project will create thousands of jobs for the community.
Spokesperson for the Coalition Against Offshore Winds, Grant Drinkwater, joined Luke Grant to discuss why the wind farm is “the most ridiculous proposal ever been put forward in the Illawarra”. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New book documents Beatles Historic first tour of Australia
This June marks 60 years since the Beatles first and only tour of Australia in 1964, at the height of the Beatlemania period.
The images of the band getting off the plane on a rainy day at Sydney airport, greeting the crowds on the balcony of Melborune’s Town Hall and the 300,000 thousand fans who swarmed the streets of Adelaide to greet them, after now seminal moments in Australia’s history.
The tour represented an extraordinary coming of age moment for the nation and the baby boomer generation, which as you’ll discover when you read the book, almost never happened.
It was also a major cultural turning point that put Australia on the map as a nation capable of hosting the biggest act the world had ever seen.
A new book, When We Was Fab: Inside The Beatles Australasian Tour 1964 presents the most well researched, beautifully assembled and entertaining account of the historic tour ever published.
Luke Grant chats with co-author, Beatles historian and radio host, Greg Armstrong, about how he managed to access never before seen photos and accounts, what the tour meant for Australia, the stories of those lucky enough to see the Fab Four live and why the Beatles popularity has transcended generations.

The Government is reportedly interested in forcing businesses to accept cash payments
Earlier this week, Independent MP for Calare, Andrew Gee introduced a bill to parliament that would force businesses to accept cash payments from shoppers, or risk facing a $25,000 fine.
The legislation was drafted in response to the gradual decline of note and coin payments in Australia, with just 13% of transactions now made with physical currency, down from 70% in 2007.
The decrease in businesses taking cash has reportedly left some elderly and regionally based Australians unable to purchase essential items.
The bill had the backing of crossbenchers Dai Le and Bob Katter, but neither major party had indicated whether or not they’d support it.
Independent MP Andrew Gee joined Luke Grant to tell him he has since met with Treasurer Jim Chalmers and that he now believes the government may back his proposal. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Experts say Aussie melanoma patients are being subjected to outdated surgery
Two Aussie melanoma experts are saying patients shouldn’t be undergoing a commonon diagnostic test called a “sentinel lymph node biopsies” (SLNB) on patient’s patients’ lymph glands, particularly on those under 40 years and over 60 years of age.
They say the results are not an accurate predictor of mortality and that many patients are being mismanaged, with potential side effects such as nerve damage.
Their findings, which now have the backing of many in the international medical community, say that patients should instead use a BAUSS score, which they say is more accurate and less invasive.
Luke Grant chats with one of the experts, Professor Anthony Dixon of the Global Melanoma Initiative, about why the BAUSS is a better indicator and if this is how Luke should have had his melanoma treated.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is convicted child killer Robert Farquarson the next Kathleen Folbigg?
If you were in Australia in the mid noughties, you’ll probably remember the Robert Farquharson case.

Will Donald Trump go to Jail?
History was made yesterday when former US President Donald Trump was found guilty by a New York jury of 34 counts of falsifying business records, by using hush money to cover up a relationship with a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.
Their verdict made him the first ever American President to be convicted of a crime.
Experts are saying that Trump's most ardent supporters will be emboldened by the decision, however, the jury is split as to how it will affect the views of the all important independent voters.
Washington Correspondent for the Australian Newspaper Adam Creighton joined Luke Grant to discuss what the verdict means for the election, the politisation that may have underpinned the decision and to answer the question on everyone’s lips: will we see Donald Trump behind bars?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Health: Australia set to relinquish control of health policies to the UN
The Albanese Government is looking to commit Australia to proposed amendments to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Pandemic Treaty and to its International Health Regulations.
The government is saying these are necessary steps to prevent, prepare for and respond to future pandemics and other international health emergencies.
But, fourteen parliamentarians from the coalition and the crossbench have written to the PM saying the reforms “pose a significant threat to Australia’s autonomy and independence on the global stage.”
Concerns have also been raised about the WHO's failure in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly its unwillingness to engage in a transparent and thorough process to isolate the disease's origins.

Who is the Australian at the centre of the Trump Trial?
You've likely never heard of him, but an Australian journalist who played a crucial role in getting Donald Trump elected, has been named as a co-conspirator in the former President's hush money trial.
His name is Dylan Howard, and he was formerly editor in chief of the American tabloid paper, the ‘National Enquirer, a position he held when Trump engaged his services to practice what's known as 'catch and kill journalism'.
This means he was tasked with buying any negative stories about the then presidential candidate and ensuring they were buried. The hope was this would save Trump from any reputational damage.
But despite his name being mentioned hundreds of times in the trial and the critical role he played in winning Trump the election, he is yet to appear in court.

There’s no doubt that In the past few decades, solar and wind energy have made
The wind and solar power myth has finally been exposed remarkable progress; they’re now satisfying significant portions of our energy demand. But there’s one major problem holding us back from relying on them even more: They can’t be stored very well. Bryan Leyland - a consulting engineer from Auckland, with experience in all aspects of the power industry, underlines this harsh reality with Michael McLaren. The week in federal politics with Michael McLaren and Dennis Shanahan
National Editor of the The Australian Dennis Shanahan reveals a recent poll indicates middle Australians haven’t fallen for the Budget and believe it could actually push up inflation. Despite Labor accusing the Coalition of engaging too many consultants, Labor has in fact increased their number of public servants. Support for the Voice is declining and not helped by Noel Pearson on the attack with language that is only doing a disservice to the Yes campaign. Michael questions why all the corporate and sporting bodies are getting behind the Voice? What about the shareholders?
