"There Were Pieces of Bodies All Around" -Rabbi Arnie Resnicoff

Rabbi Arnie Resnicoff’s life took a fateful turn on October 23, 1983, when he found himself amidst the chaos and devastation of the Beirut barracks bombing, a bombing that took the lives of 241 U.S. servicemembers in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. Rabbi Resnicoff was in Beirut to conduct a memorial service for Staff Sgt. Allen Soifert, a Jewish Marine killed by a sniper. Due to his observance of the Jewish Sabbath, he remained in Beirut following the service. When the bomb exploded, he was in a nearby building and immediately rushed to the site, becoming one of the first rescuers on the scene. Rabbi Resnicoff spent the entire day pulling survivors from the rubble and providing comfort to the dying. During the rescue, he lost his yarmulke, and Father George Pucciarelli crafted him a new one from the camouflage cover of a helmet. His actions that day were later chronicled in a letter to his wife and mother and in a report used by President Reagan. Today, Rabbi Resnicoff shares powerful memories of October 23, 1983, in the last episode of our limited series: Beirut Survivors. Rabbi Arnold E. Resnicoff began his naval career as an enlisted man in the reserves during high school and served as a Navy line officer in Vietnam, where his ship was the first to enter Cambodia in 1970. After Vietnam and a stint with Naval Intelligence in Europe, he left the Navy to study at rabbinical school. Returning to the Navy Chaplain Corps, he served on active duty for nearly 25 years, earning the Defense Superior Service Medal for his work with military and civilian leaders throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Rabbi Resnicoff also served as the National Director of Interreligious Affairs for the American Jewish Committee and continues to be a consultant on interfaith values and interreligious affairs. His life of service, both in and out of uniform, reflects a deep commitment to faith, humanity, and the enduring bonds forged in moments of profound challenge. Dr. Jimmy Ware’s life took a dramatic turn on October 23, 1983, when he found himself at the center of the medical rescue efforts following the Beirut barracks bombing, a bombing that took the lives of 241 U.S. servicemembers in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history. As one of two dentists stationed in Beirut, Dr. Ware played a critical role in the aftermath of the attack. On the morning of the bombing, he and Dr. Gil Bigelow managed the entire medical response, drawing on their preparedness from a mass casualty plan devised by their friend, Dr. John Hudson. Later that day, Dr. Ware visited the bomb site and grasped the enormity of the devastation. His meticulous work, including the recovery of dental records from the ruins, proved essential in the identification of the fallen. Today, Dr. Ware shares his poignant and powerful story as part of our limited series: Beirut Survivors. A native of Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Jimmy Ware earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Emory University in 1978 and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982. Upon graduating, he joined the Fleet Marine Force, 2nd Dental Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC, and later deployed to Lebanon with the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit as part of a Multinational Peacekeeping Mission. Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Ware received numerous decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon, among others. His contributions in Beirut, both before and after the bombing, demonstrate his deep commitment to his teammates and his profession, leaving an indelible mark on those with whom he served. TRUE BELIEVER was one of violent redemption. SAVAGE SON explored the dark side of man through the dynamic of hunter and hunted. THE DEVIL’S HAND looked at the U.S. through the eyes of the enemy, an enemy that had been watching, learning, adapting, and applying lessons from our past two decades of combat to their battle plans. IN THE BLOOD was a sniper-centric book of violent resolutions. ONLY THE DEAD was a novel of truth and consequences. RED SKY MOURNING focuses on the rapidly expanding role of technology in conflict, but at its base it is a story about loyalty. Will this be the last book in the James Reece Terminal List series? A sneak peek inside RED SKY MOURNING: Chapter 1

In just a few short days the 7th novel in the James Reece Terminal List series is coming in hot! On this BONUS episode, I invite you to listen to Chapter 1 of Red Sky Mourning read by Ray Porter. When it comes to writing a novel, my goal is to honor the story.  I never consider what is “popular” or if shorter or longer chapters are “in” or if I’m going to alienate anyone because of what I am writing – instead it is all about story.  By honoring the story I am respecting the reader or listener who is trusting me with time they will never get back.  It is my responsibility as an author to constantly hone my craft to deliver the best story I possibly can.  From the initial spark of an idea to the final manuscript, my heart and soul goes into every word.  Even as the deadline looms, I continue to scrutinize every chapter and scene, making refinements right up until the very last moment, to ensure nothing was left on the field.  If you already listened to Chapter 1 when I released it in December, you may notice some slight differences in this latest version.  I am constantly striving to enhance the narrative, deepen connections to characters, and sharpen the plot —even if only by a degree.  Enjoy the listen!  Buy the audiobook https://bit.ly/RedSkyMourningAudio Order your copy of RED SKY MOURNING, HERE. From the publisher:  A traitorous CIA officer has found refuge with the Russian Mafia with designs on ensuring a certain former Navy SEAL sniper is put in the ground.  Half a world away, James Reece is recovering from brain surgery in the Montana wilderness of his youth, learning to live again, putting his life back together with the help of investigative journalist Katie Buranek and his longtime friend and SEAL teammate Raife Hastings.  For reasons both personal and professional, the Russian intelligence-mafia consortium has their sights set on removing a player from the board before he can return to the battlefield, targeting Reece on U.S. soil.  With an unknown entity inside the U.S. government compromised by Russian intelligence, Reece is forced to recruit a team of former commandos to bring his unique brand of vengeance to the Russian Mafia on their home turf, turning the hunters into the hunted.  Operating at the nexus of an evolving hybrid form of warfare involving terrorist organizations, drug cartels, human trafficking syndicates, cyber technologies, and organized crime, James Reece stands head and shoulders above the fray as the go-to covert operative in a new war.  Applying the experience and emotions from real-world combat to the pages of the political thriller, Jack Carr once again brings readers on a behind the scenes journey into the mind of a modern-day special operations soldier, dispensing an ancient form of justice in today’s modern geopolitical landscape.  Jack Carr elevates the genre to new heights in his most visceral novel to date exploring the dark side of man through the eyes of a warrior who has seen both the depravity of conflict and the strength of the human spirit, cementing his position as the new leader in political thrillers!  Deeply personal and intoxicating, Savage Son illuminates the darkest instincts of the human consciousness and will keep you glued to the page until that last bullet finds its mark. And most important of all, how can the attacks be stopped before bloodshed and economic freefall bring America and her allies to their knees?  There is just one man who stands a chance of answering these questions. Former Navy SEAL James Reece is the only and crucial connection to a shadowy former Iraqi commando who could provide leads the CIA desperately needs. Reece might be America’s last hope. Unfortunately, he is also America’s most-wanted domestic terrorist. To rein him in, a bargain is struck and Reece becomes the reluctant tool of the United States government, traveling the globe to target terrorist lead- ers and unraveling a geopolitical conspiracy involving a traitorous CIA officer and a sinister assassination plot with worldwide repercussions. There is always another true believer out there willing to kill for his cause. James Reece will be there to stop him. From the publisher:  A Navy SEAL has nothing left to live for and everything to kill for after he discovers that the American government is behind the deaths of his team in this ripped-from-the-headlines political thriller.  On his last combat deployment, Lieutenant Commander James Reece’s entire team was killed in a catastrophic ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government.  Now, with no family and free from the military’s command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he’s learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward avenging the deaths of his family and teammates. With breathless pacing and relentless suspense, Reece ruthlessly targets his enemies in the upper echelons of power without regard for the laws of combat or the rule of law.
