This episode is a snippet of Kenya’s First-ever Law Career Fair organized by The LawDown Africa, an online legal magazine. The event, which was held on the 31st of August 2024 at the Kenya School of Law, Karen Campus, bore the theme: Exploring Legal Horizons. Therefore, it included a panel discussion on the diversity of the legal sector featuring: Pat Mbugua of StanChart and former Partner at Walker Kontos Mrs. Rispah Simiyu, Commissioner for Domestic Taxes at KRA Ayieta Lumbasyo, Founder, Fertility Law Clinic, Timothy Owase, CEO of Kenya Film Commission. June has multiple observances focusing on children and child rights, including International Children’s Day, International Day of the African Child, and World Day Against Child Labor. So, we had a chat with Joy Katunge Matheka, an Advocate of the High Court and a Children’s Law expert. Ms. Katunge scooped the Civil Society Lawyer of the Year Award during the 2021 Nairobi Legal Awards, owing to her contribution to child protection activities. She shares her journey of grace into child protection law (which she considers her true calling) while unpacking the scope of children’s rights and her experiences practicing law in CSOs. Additionally, she highlights the strides the Kenyan government has made in upholding child protection, and what lawyers can do to promote children’s rights in their spheres of influence.

The church is arguably among the oldest institutions in Kenya, yet there is a gap in its utilization of legal services. In this podcast, we focus on the church as a growing area of practice and interview two advocates, Sr. Trizah Muthoni and Myron Mukuna, who are pioneers in this area. Sr. Trizah is the in-house counsel for the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, while Myron Mukuna is an ordained Diocesan Chancellor of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Butere Diocese. The latest guest on the podcast is Helene Namisi. The Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya, Nairobi Branch, having previously served as Board Member and Chairperson of the HIV & AIDS Tribunal. Helene has practised for over 18 years and has vast experience in Family Law, Conveyancing, and Commercial Law as well as both women's and children’s rights.  Listen in as she shares her story in a way only she could. To crown mental health Awareness month, Stella Muraguri, Managing Partner at MMW Advocates LLP, talks to us about the challenges of setting up a law firm whilst striking a delicate balancing act with motherhood. Stella's story mirrors the life of every woman in practice. She highlights the importance of taking stock of our mental health because it's only in doing so that we are able to serve our clients.

Robert is an award-winning lawyer with a personality that he is not afraid to show in his different fields. He was recently named the Young Lawyer of the year in the fourth edition of the Nairobi Legal Awards.  This was the first time a private consultant had won this award. He is also a content creator who has had his TikTok videos aired on national television. Interestingly, Robert has been able to use his social media following to put out legal alerts on “Interesting Legal facts in Kenya”, a series that has amassed over a hundred thousand views across his social media platforms. Robert has previously worked with Uber Kenya Limited as a partnerships specialist  Robert was trained and worked at Anjarwalla and Khanna, East Africa’s largest Corporate Law firm and founding member of ALN.  Today, Robert shares his story with us as we delve into mental health awareness for lawyers. 

On our final episode in our Women's month edition, we talked to Esther Omulele OGW.  Her story is as inspirational as it is captivating. She showcased the intricacies of leadership and held us captive with the richness of her story.

We got to have a chat with Noreen Kidunduhu, a senior associate at TripleOk Law Advocates. Noreen is passionate about Arbitration and her experience has seen her serve in several capacities in the arbitration realm. She was recently appointed as CoChair of the CIArb Young Members Group. With several achievements under her belt, Noreen is the perfect example of a young lady lawyer scaling the heights of the legal space.

We are celebrating notable women in the legal sector throughout this month.  Our first guest is Hon Magistrate Caroline Kendagor who is the Deputy Registrar for Court Annexed Mediation and a Principal magistrate in the Kenyan judiciary. Hon Kendagor is a passionate judicial officer, a pioneer in the field of court-annexed Mediation, and an inspiration to young women everywhere but in particular in her home county of Elgeyo Marakwet.

In this episode of ‘Winning at Law’ we interview Mr. Kevin Mwangi. He is currently a programme officer-redress at the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU). His main areas of practice are in legal analysis, legislative drafting, and public interest litigation. Mr. Mwangi has amassed expertise in law reform, democratic governance, and constitutionalism at national and regional levels. His work has seen him awarded by the Law Society of Kenya- Nairobi Corporate Lawyer of the Year 2020.  He also currently sits as an Expert Member at the African Union division working on Human Rights the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights
