Nicodemus viewed the signs themselves as evidence of Jesus’ divine calling but did not see them as pointing to Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah.

Philip was from Bethsaida, as were Andrew and Peter. He found his friend, Nathaniel, and told him about Jesus. John the Baptist had called Jesus “the Lamb of God.

Two disciples of John the Baptist were standing with him when Jesus walked by. John declared, “ ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ ” (John 1:36

The prophet’s mind was directed to the words of Isaiah, ‘He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter.’ Isa. 53:7.”—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 136.

He was sent from God to bear witness to the Light and to prepare for the coming of the Messiah (John 1:6–8)

“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’ ” (John 3:3, NKJV).

In John, the idea of glorifying Jesus is linked to the concept of His hour; that is, the time of His death (compare with John 2:4, John 7:30, John 8:20, John 12:23–27, John 13:1, John 16:32, and John 17:1). The cross is His hour of glory.

But the glorious side of the cross is especially presented in Luke and John (Luke 23:32–47, John 19:25–30).

‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’ ” This human, dark side of the cross is particularly presented in Matthew and Mark (Matt. 27:46, Mark 15:34, NKJV)

Being a believer in Jesus is something that we do, and this is expressed in how we live and not just in a set of beliefs. As we know, the devil believes in Jesus, as well (see James 2:19)

John 1:1–18, describes not only who Jesus Christ, the Word (logos), is but also how people in the world related to Him. In John 1:9

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1)

The life of Christ that gives life to the world is in His word. It was by His word that Jesus healed disease and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea, and raised the dead; and the people bore witness that His word was with power.

The weeping over his death (John 11:19, 31, 33); the sisters’ lament that Lazarus would not have died if Jesus had been present (John 11:21, 32); and Jesus’ own tears (John 11:35).

the Pharisees think Jesus is a sinner because He healed on the Sabbath (John 9:16, 24), and they will slander the healed man as “born in utter sin” (John 9:34, ESV)

The disciples made a connection between sickness and sin. A number of Old Testament passages point in that direction (compare with Exod. 20:5, 2 Kings 5:15–27, 2 Kings 15:5, and 2 Chron. 26:16–21)

The Judeans were expecting an earthly messiah who would deliver them from the oppression of the Roman Empire. Two of the most difficult things encountered in war are feeding the troops and caring for the wounded and dead

In John 6:4, 5, the apostle goes out of his way to state that the timing of the feeding of the 5,000 was near the Passover. The Passover was a commemoration of the deliverance of Israel from Egypt

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’ ” (John 11:25, 26, NKJV).

Jesus repelled the charge of blasphemy. My authority, He said, for doing the work of which you accuse Me, is that I am the Son of God, one with Him in nature, in will, and in purpose.”—The Desire of Ages, p. 208.

John 5:18 can be disturbing because it seems to say that Jesus was breaking the Sabbath. However, a closer look at John 5:16–18 shows that Jesus argues that His “work” on the Sabbath is in line with His relationship to His Father

Persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath” (John 5:16, NKJV)

“Jesus does not ask this sufferer to exercise faith in Him. He simply says, ‘Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.’ But the man’s faith takes hold upon that word.

He said, “ ‘Go; your son will live’ ” (John 4:50, ESV

God prophesied through Moses that a prophet would come who was like Moses. God asked Israel to hear Him (Deut. 18:15, Matt. 17:5, Acts 7:37).

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples. The Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30, 31, NKJV).

“To the believer, Christ is the resurrection and the life. In our Savior the life that was lost through sin is restored; for He has life in Himself to quicken whom He will. He is invested with the right to give immortality

As we already have seen, the original disciples of Jesus struggled with belief (Matt. 28:17, John 20:24–29), and they were with Jesus in the flesh and saw, again and again, the miracles.

The first person to see Jesus alive was Mary Magdalene (John 20:11–18). Other women saw Him, as well (Matt. 28:8–10). It is significant that the first people to see the risen Lord were women.

As they walked, they recounted Christ's works of mercy and His words of comfort. But they remembered not His words, ‘I will see you again.’ John 16:22.”—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 788

The story of the resurrection appears in each of the Gospels. Each Gospel writer presents the story from a different perspective, but they all contain the core concepts that appear also in 1 Corinthians 15:1–8.

All the Gospel writers agree that Jesus died on the day that they identify as the “preparation” (Matt 27:62; Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:14, 31, 42).

“But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him’ ” (Mark 16:6, NKJV).

Number 10:10 Fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.

Numbers 7:4 The Lord said to Moses, 5 “Accept these from them, that they may be used in the work at the tent of meeting. Give them to the Levites as each man’s work requires.

The seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. Exodus 20:8, 11 say, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.... For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested

Peter demonstrates that Jesus is the Messiah.

Mark 14:53–59 describes Jesus being brought to the Sanhedrin and the first part of the trial. It is an exercise in frustration

The Gospels do not go into great detail about Judas’s motivation. But Ellen G. White writes: “Judas had naturally a strong love for money; but he had not always been corrupt enough to do such a deed as this

Mark 14:12 notes that this is the first day of unleavened bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed. The meal was on Thursday evening

Judas’s betrayal also is unforgettable. Mark implies that his motive was greed. The Gospel of John makes it explicit (John 12:4–6).

And He said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will’ ” (Mark 14:36, NKJV)

Mark 13:14, regarding the abomination of desolation, is the fulcrum around which the chapter pivots.

Jesus comes to the central point about the fall of Jerusalem in Mark 13:14. He refers to “the abomination of desolation.” The Lord says that the reader should understand. With these words, Jesus is pointing the disciples to the book of Daniel.

As we have noted, the temple complex was a truly amazing structure. Josephus notes that the Royal Portico on the south side of the complex had 162 pillars, each of which three men clasping hands could reach around (Antiquities, 15.11.5 §§413–414).

The Jerusalem temple was an amazingly beautiful structure. The temple mount dominated the city, and the massive stones involved in its construction are a marvel to this day, some weighing hundreds of tons

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then He will send His angels, and gather His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven’ ” (Mark 13:26, 27, NKJV).

He declares that the open sinner is less guilty than is he who professes to serve God, but who bears no fruit to His glory.”—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 584.

But while peaceably subject to the laws of the land, they should at all times give their first allegiance to God.”—Ellen. G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 602

The day after Jesus cleanses the temple, the religious leaders confront Him in the temple courts, asking by what authority He acted the day before

Then He says the leaders have made the temple a den of robbers (Jer. 7:11). Then, at the end of this amazing day, Jesus leaves the city with His disciples (Mark 11:19).

The Triumphal Entry. Jerusalem is located in a hilly region at an elevation of about 2,400 feet (about 740 meters). In Jesus’ day its population was perhaps 40,000–50,000, but this swelled at Passover.

Jerusalem Controversies. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses’ ” (Mark 11:25, NKJV).

The title “Son of David” in Jesus’ day had two concepts connected with it—the restoration of a king to Israel’s throne (compare with Isaiah 11; Jer. 23:5, 6; Jer. 33:15)

Jesus then calls the group together to give one of His most profound teachings. He indicates that Gentile rulers use power for personal advantage.

Mark 10:27 seems like a beautiful place to end the story: you cannot make it to heaven on your own, you need the grace of God in order to be saved.

While children were desired, they were of low social status, along the lines of slaves, actually (Gal. 4:1, 2).

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many’ ” (Mark 10:45,NKJV).

Herod had beheaded John the Baptist because of his rebuke regarding this illicit relationship (see Matt. 14:1–12)

Jesus immediately picks up on the expression of doubt. The Lord’s response can be paraphrased, “What do you mean, ‘If You can’?” (Mark 9:23).

leaders are tasked in the kingdom of God with the responsibility to care for these new converts with special care, similar to the Old Testament ethic of caring

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life’ ” (John 3:16, ESV)

The betrayer is not pointed out at this time, but the reader already knows who it is because of the identification of Judas (see Mark 3:19)

Luke notes that they were talking about Jesus’ departure (Greek-exodos) that He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem (Luke 9:30, 31). ‘If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us’ ” (Mark 9:22, NKJV).

When Jesus first called the disciples, He said He would make them fishers of men (Mark 1:17)

When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me” (Mark 8:34, NKJV).

“Among the followers of our Lord today, as of old, how widespread is this subtle, deceptive sin.

The Lord’s manner of healing the man is curious, particularly for modern readers. He puts His fingers in the man’s ears, spits, touches his tongue and sighs.

Divine power. Jesus takes the opportunity to warn the disciples against the “leaven” of the Pharisees and Herod (Mark 8:15), meaning their teachings (compare with Matt. 16:12).

He has shown that she who has been regarded as an outcast from Israel is no longer an alien, but a child in God's household. As a child it is her privilege to share in the Father's gifts.”—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 401.

First, it would be odd for Jesus suddenly to dismiss Mosaic instructions in Mark 7:14–19 when He had just defended Moses against tradition in Mark 7:6–13.

Inside Out. There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man (Mark 7:15, NKJV).

During the time between the testaments, the idea of washing hands in order to remain ritually pure was extended to common people, even though these rules originally applied only to the priests in the Old Testament (Exod. 30:17–21).

A Different Kind of Messiah. After the disciples return from their mission, they go with Jesus to a remote area on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee to rest. But a large crowd of 5,000 people arrives at the location before them

God's mission. In the evening the disciples recommend sending the crowd away to find food, but Jesus tells them to feed the crowd

The mission of the Twelve Apostles in taking the message of Jesus everywhere stands in sharp contrast with the imprisonment and silencing of the Baptist

So it is likely that he is desperate. This desperation is exemplified by Jairus’s falling on his knees before Jesus.

Can You Hear a Whisper Above a Shout? The man rushed at Jesus—no word about the disciples (they probably ran off). When the man came near to Jesus, he fell down before Him.

At the beginning of Mark 4, Jesus steps into a boat to teach the crowd on the shore. In Mark 4:10–12, it seems He may have gotten out of the boat and talked with the disciples privately

However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you (Mark 5:19, NKJV).

True holiness is wholeness in the service of God. Love is the underlying principle of God's government

Parables of Growing seeds. The Kingdom of God started very small, will grow very large and impressive.

The house in that part of the world in Jesus' day varied in size and construction.

Sandwich Story: Part 2. His real family are those who do the will of God along with Him (see Luke 12:53, Luke 14:26)

This passage is the first “sandwich story” in Mark, where one story is begun and then is interrupted by another story, with the first story completed only afterward. healing power comes from the devil.

In Mark 2:23, 24, the Pharisees accuse the disciples of breaking the Sabbath. According to Jewish tradition

Jesus continues with two illustrations that highlight the contrast between His teaching and that of the religious leaders—unshrunk cloth on an old garment and new wine in old wineskins

Healing a Paralytic. Jesus meets the objectors on their own ground by using a typical rabbinic style of argumentation called “lesser to greater.” It is one thing to say that a person’s sins are forgiven

And He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27, 28, NKJV).

Can You Keep a Secret. Jesus, however, is moved with compassion toward the man and touches him. “Then Jesus, moved with compassion. I am willing; be cleansed’ ” (Mark 1:41, NKJV).

Can You Keep a Secret? The leper places faith in Jesus that He can cleanse him. According to Leviticus 13, a leper was ritually unclean and had to avoid contact with others (see Lev. 13:45, 46).

The Secret of Jesus’ Ministry. Throughout the Gospels, we meet Jesus as a man of prayer (see Matt. 14:23, Mark 6:46, John 17). This appears to be one of the key secrets in the power of Jesus’ ministry.

More Sabbath Ministry. Mark says that the entire city was gathered at the door that evening (Mark 1:33). It would have taken some time for Jesus to help all those people.

An Unforgettable Worship Service. the command to come out of the man is understandable, but why the command, “ ‘Be quiet’ ” (NKJV)?

Follow Me. Jesus’ call to these men is simple, direct, and prophetic. He calls them to follow Him—that is, to become His disciples

Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men’ ” (Mark 1:17, NKJV).

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head while on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, telling the main facts- Daniel 7.

The Gospel According to Jesus.

Jesus’ Baptism. ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased’ ” (Mark 1:11).

The Messenger. 20 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared -Exodus 23:20

A Second Chance. Mark clearly recovered from his failure, almost certainly through the trust that his cousin, Barnabas, placed in him.

However, from early times, each of the canonical Gospels has been associated with either an apostle (Matthew, John) or with a companion of an apostle. For example, the Gospel of Luke is linked with Paul (see Colossians 4:14;

The Beginning of the Gospel. The story of Peter’s escape from prison and the subsequent actions and then the death of Herod are replete with striking, even humorous, contrasts between Peter and the king.

The whole wicked world. The whole wicked world stand arraigned at the bar of God on the charge of high treason against the government of heaven. The Great Controversy, pp. 666.

Two Eternities. Everyone must be convinced that God has been fair and just in all His ways. Ultimately, every knee shall bow and acknowledge God’s justice in the great controversy. That there was never any justification for rebellion against God.

Judgment in the Millennium. At the close of the millennium, not only are all the wicked raised to life, but the Holy City, New Jerusalem, descends to earth from heaven (Rev. 21:2)

The Millennium on Earth. The imagery in Revelation 20:1–3 is symbolic. Satan is not literally bound with a chain and locked in a pit. For 1,000 years, he is confined to this desolate, depopulated earth, bound by the circumstances he himself has created.

Hope in Jesus’ Soon Return. Jesus’ words, “ ‘Let not your heart be troubled, are His reassurance that He will never leave us and is coming again to take us home. This world is not our home. A better day is coming

Hope in the Time of Trouble. The close of human probation is followed by a time of trouble “ ‘such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. Revelation 16 describes seven last plagues that will be poured out on the wicked world.

The Triumph of God’s Love. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. (Revelation 21:3, NKJV).

Uplift Jesus as the center of all hope. Let Daniel speak, let the Revelation speak

Let Daniel speak, let the Revelation speak, and tell what is truth. But whatever phase of the subject is presented, uplift Jesus as the center of all hope, pp. 116, 118

The dragon that sought to destroy Christ at His birth. The dragon is said to be Satan (Revelation 12:9)

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. John 16:2

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things” (Revelation 4:11).

The Impending Conflict. Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold. Psalm 119:127.

Savior has warned His people against deception. Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ’s advent. The Savior has warned His people against deception upon this point, and has clearly foretold the manner of His second coming

Spiritualism in the Last Days: Part 2 If the saints of God with deep humility fast and pray, their prayers will prevail. Jesus will commission holy angels to resist Satan, and he will be driven back and his power broken from off the afflicted ones

Speaking of Christ’s second coming, he declares that it is “after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9.

Death in the New Testament. Paul’s epistle gave them new hope and strength, and a firmer faith in, and a deeper affection for, the One who through His death had brought life and immortality to light. —The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 258, 259.

Death in the Old Testament. Christ became one with humanity, that humanity might become one in Spirit and life with Him.

The Deadly Consequences of Spiritualism. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:19, 20

The burden of our message is not only the commandments of God, but the faith of Jesus.

The Three Angels’ Messages. [The third] angel is seen flying in the midst of heaven, “saying with a loud voice

The Mark of the Beast. The great controversy between good and evil will increase in intensity to the very close of time

That law is just as Jehovah wrote it in the temple of heaven.

The Immutability of God’s Law. God’s mercy was manifested to men; but mercy does not set aside justice. The law reveals the attributes of God’s character, and not a jot or tittle of it could be changed to meet man in his fallen condition

The Sanctuary and the Law. The temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament.” Revelation 11:19

The Foundation of God’s Government. So it is with the kingdom of Christ. It is a new creation.

How Jesus’ work for us in the judgment and our role. he fact that the acknowledged people of God are represented as standing before the Lord in filthy garments should lead to humility and deep searching of heart on the part of all who profess His name

Jesus, Our Advocate in the Judgment. “The intercession of Christ in man’s behalf in the sanctuary above is as essential to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross.

The Good News of the Most Holy Place. Jesus’ blood prepares the way at every step. This gives us hope since we can have reunion with God only if Jesus pardons us and blots out our sins.

The Judgment Has Come. Since Christ comes to give out His final rewards, there must be a judgment before that, to show who will receive what reward when He comes

The blood was transferred into the sanctuary during the daily services, showing the recording of sin (Jer. 17:1)

The sanctuary in the wilderness was a scale model or pattern of the heavenly sanctuary.

We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man” (Hebrews 8:1, 2, NKJV).

Life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus is at the heart of the gospel and is the center of Scripture.

The lack of knowledge on the part of the lost is not because they could not know. It is because Satan blinded their eyes. Satan’s kingdom is a kingdom of darkness.

One of the devil’s most effective deceptions is to lead us to believe that human reasoning, unaided by the Holy Spirit and uninformed by the Word of God, is sufficient to understand God’s will

All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God,” it is “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”

Compromise: Satan’s Subtle Strategy. What Jesus says is true because He is the author of truth. Truth proceeds from the heart of an all-wise, all-loving, all-knowing God. He is the foundation of reality and of all truth

Savage Wolves. His concern is that “savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock” (Acts 20:29, NKJV).

Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going (John 12:35, NKJV).

The spirit of vital godliness will disappear.

Truth Triumphant. Christ is victorious. Evil is defeated. Jesus wins and Satan loses.

God’s Word may be attacked, or suppressed, but it will never be eradicated.

Revelation 11:9 says that the bodies of God’s two witnesses would lie unburied for “three-and-a-half days” (NKJV)

The two witnesses “ ‘will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth’ ” (Rev. 11:3, NKJV)

In Zechariah 4, the prophet saw two olive trees on either side of a golden lampstand—the same imagery that we find here in Revelation 11

Through it all, God’s Word has prevailed

God's Divine Mercy. God's love

2 King 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha

Romans 3:27-28 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

For,” as he said, “we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth” (2 Corinthians 13:8).

God is love. God's love is the basis of our faith.

A legacy for love. Love was the norm of Christian communities in the first few centuries of

Caring for the community. Jesus deeply cared for people so did the New Testament Church.

Faithful amid persecution. The disciples faced threats (Acts 4:17)

Christians providentially preserved. God mercy, grace, providence and foreknowledge are clearly revealed in the events leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem.

Brokenhearted Savior. He came to his own and his own did not receive him (John 1:11)

Light from the sanctuary. We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens (Hebrews 8:1, 2, NKJV).

He was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15)

The “Seed of the woman,” of course, is Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16)

Lucifer deceives; Christ prevails. When God created humanity, He embedded deep within our brains the ability to think, to reason, and to choose.

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand

Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going (John 12:35, NKJV).

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11, NKJV)
