A Podcast Journey with Ruby Garcia, General Manager of Como Metropolitan Singapore

Join renowned Australian luxury hotel journalist Renae Leith-Manos in an enlightening podcast episode with Ruby Garcia, the esteemed General Manager of COMO Metropolitan Singapore. Ruby's career in luxury hotels began unexpectedly at the age of 21. As a single mother in need of a job close to home, she submitted resumes to various local companies, ultimately finding her path in the hospitality industry. Her journey started at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Manila, which offered her a chance to support herself and her one-year-old baby. Leaving her son in the care of her mother, who was also a single mother, was a heart-wrenching sacrifice. However, Ruby was determined to provide for her family. Working overseas added another layer of difficulty, especially in a traditionally male-dominated field. She faced ingrained prejudices and societal expectations, yet her determination only grew stronger with each challenge. A significant milestone in Ruby's career was becoming the General Manager of the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the world in 2018. This was a groundbreaking achievement, as she was the first Asian female General Manager since its opening. Reflecting on her journey, Ruby wishes she had known earlier about the sacrifices of time and effort required to succeed in the industry. She finds fulfillment and purpose in the memories of her career progression, the letters from her family, and the words of encouragement from colleagues. Looking back at photos from the early stages of her career and reading letters from her mother and son gives Ruby the drive to continue when faced with adversity. She is incredibly grateful for her progress and her ability to inspire those around her. She says, “my career brought me to places that I never knew I could get to.” Ruby has been greatly influenced by other strong women in her life. She says, “I have been fortunate to work with strong women above, below, and alongside me. They have taught me how to lead and be led. Resilience with grace was my takeaway from them, and that I live by.” To her past self and aspiring professionals, Ruby's advice is simple yet profound: “believe in yourself, stay true to your values, and never stop pursuing your dreams.” Chapter for interview between Ruby Garcia and Renae Leith Manos : 00:00 Introduction 00:53 Meet Ruby Garcia 02:20 Nutrition and Wellness Concept at Como 04:10 First Hyperbaric Lounge 04:22 Wellness Facility 06:25 Percentage of Guest using Wellness Facility 07:35 Wellness Equipment 08:10 Ice Bath Trends 08:45 Shambala 10:50 Red light therapy 11:40 Sleep Dream Experience 13:45 Client 14:48 Collaboration with Cedric Grolet 16:30 Ruby Garcia Job Experience 19:20 Changes in the Luxury Hotels 22:10 Technology in Singapore 23:25 The evolving of her roles and hotels 25:55 Where to from here 28:20 Club 21 28:58 Closing *** Subscribe above for the best and latest regular luxury travel updates. Capella Singapore Hotel Review

Capella Singapore is One Of The Best Luxury Hotel Resorts In Singapore.  Capella Singapore is one of Singapore’s most lavish and luxurious hotel and resort stays. It’s no wonder Madonna and Lady Gaga have stayed here amongst a whole host of other high profile names from politicians to celebrities, movie stars and billionaires.   The hotel sits within an expansive 30 acre Colonial Style Capella Residence with sweeping ocean views. It is situated on Sentosa Island, so the setting is sense, peaceful and spacious. So much of the style of this resort is the opposite of what a Singapore stay is usually all about.  Think huge suites and rooms, lush green, rolling lawns, clean, fresh  ocean air, a picture perfect white clean beach, a slower pace and birds flying overhead within the property's vast grounds.  The stunningly white colonial parts of the building have conservation status, as they are steeped in history and grandeur, and for guests they create a feeling of grace and old world hospitality and timeless elegance and style.  Capella Singapore resort recently completed a year-long refurbishment courtesy of André Fu Studio, one of Asia’s most sought after architects, who also designed Andaz Singapore, The St Regis Hong Kong and The Waldorf Astoria Bangkok.    Capella Singapore is a global hotel,  in many ways. It features the work of esteemed architects from London, leading interior designers from Japan, Renowned Artworks from American artists, Top Chefs from China and Italy, and wellness specialists from Stockholm.

A Woman At The Top; Marlene Poynder, The Carlyle New York.

Marlene Poynder is the first woman in the 91 year history of the iconic Carlyle Hotel NYC to be Managing Director. The Australian has been working in elite hotels in Australia, Asia and the USA for more than 30 years and took over this prestigious role at this iconic hotel in NYC's upper east side this year.  She is a highly regarded results driven leader who is a huge supporter of women in business in leadership roles and believes mentoring is one the most powerful tools. Here she opens up about her hopes for hospitality into the future, how she landed her plum role at Rosewood, and how in this "fourth quarter" of her career she is living out the dream she had for herself at 10 years of age.   Poynder says she never would have achieved that dream if it wasn't for three different mentors who helped her maintain her self belief along the way. She is also a believer in teams, and has held positions including General Manager at The Conrad New York Downtown and General Manager of The Waldorf Astoria in Chicago. The Carlyle is one of the world's most prestigious city hotels with a celebrity history spanning decades. It is brimming with artworks, is itself a catalogue of design history and has always been live with the sound of some of America's best musicians at The Cafe Carlyle within the hotel, which opened in 1947, 16 years after the hotel opened. Bono, Cindi Lauper, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, John Mayer, Bill Murray and Liza Minelli are just a few who have given impromptu performances at the piano in legendary Bemelmans Bar. The Carlyle became a favourite of Hollywood stars after Ingrid Bergman first stayed there when she filmed Intermezzo. It has captivated the well heeled and the well educated for years and was where Jacqueline Onassis met Audrey Hepburn, and the hotel has appeared in Sex And The City, Gossip Girl, HBO's Girls and Bravo's Younger, and the movie "A Very Murray Christmas" starring Bill Murray was entirely filmed at the hotel. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stayed there during their first visit to New York. The hotel produces over 1200 monogrammed pillow cases each year for guests, and Hubert De Givenchy once owned an apartment there, and during the Kennedy administration the hotel's owner Robert Dowling kept the "Kennedy Duplex" empty in case the president ever wanted to stay. Many of the guests keep returning multiple times a year, and very few of the world's biggest stars have not had at least one stay at this elegant, unique, truly original hotel.   For more luxury travel, go to: www.renaesworld.com.au For more on the Carlyle, go to: https://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/the...

Raffles Hotel Singapore Review, Singapore's most iconic hotel.

Hotel Review of iconic Raffles Singapore, one of South East Asia's most luxurious hotels and a  National monument for Singapore, having first opened in 1887, and named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore.  Fresh from a two year facelift, Raffles is currently one of the greatest places in Singapore to stay - and dine. The extensive renovation has taken every aspect of this extraordinary hotel to a new level.  From the well dressed (and famous) Sikh doorman to the exceptional 10 new restaurants and bars, 115 newly refurbished and refined rooms and suites, and the breathtaking bohemian chandelier, that glistens with 8,214 pieces of crystals, this is certainly glamour and a touch of elegantly refined glitz.  All suites come with a Nespresso coffee machine, complimentary non-alcoholic mini bar (hidden in a luggage-like table) and exclusive bath amenities by Ormonde Jayne.    “Raffles Hotel stands for all the fables of the exotic East”, Playwright, Somerset Maugham.   For more, click to www.renaesworld.com.au For more on Raffles, click here: https://www.raffles.com/singapore/ Listen on: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7kciRY8... The German GM who speaks Mandarin: Christian Poda, Four Seasons Bejing.S4, Ep 25

Christian Poda started his career with Four Seasons 22 years ago in his home town of Berlin. He has worked in the US, and in Asia and is currently General Manager of The Four Seasons Hotel in Bejing, China. It was his personal curiosity with Asia that first drew him there after his first trip in 2002, when he was blown away by the experience, and the technological advancements  and designs he saw. He has now lived in Asia for 15 years, and he even speaks some Mandarin. He had to adapt as an outsider trying to fit in, and says he became far more culturally aware, and become less direct and change to work in Asia with sensitivity. Poda feels hospitality is a business firmly anchored in Europe, and in North America he feels they are stronger in terms of sales and marketing, but in Asia there is the human component and a lot more people oriented. He  says the world has become smaller, and that the hospitality business is far more connected.
