Close the Gap with a Spectrum of Care
This is a compelling VetFolio Voice episode that examines the importance of using a “spectrum of care” approach in providing a range of viable options to clients seeking parasite protection for their pets. Because almost all pets are at risk for significant pathology caused by the major categories of parasites, year-round, broad-spectrum parasiticides are necessary for our veterinary patients. Indeed, recommending parasiticides is one of the cornerstones of the care we veterinarians provide to our patients. However, there are many pet owners who may not be able to afford many of the commonly recommended options. In this VetFolio Voice episode, Dr. Cassi hosts Dr. Kendall Houlihan in an illuminating discussion about the importance of open communication with clients to bring awareness about the different options available for parasiticides in order to provide the best possible parasite prevention plan for each unique pet and client. An important component of this approach is to support clients who are doing their best, even if it is not the “gold standard” we associate with parasite preventative measures. Dr. Cassi and Dr. Houlihan discuss the importance of supporting one another as colleagues when we make these plans. Beyond Fluids: A New Endpoint for Managing Chronic Kidney Disease
Despite being routinely diagnosed, chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats can be challenging to manage, and CKD is a common cause of mortality in middle-aged and geriatric cats. In this VetFolio Voice podcast episode, Dr. Cassi chats with Dr. Mark Acierno about appropriate diets for these patients, including a discussion on some of the research that points to the importance of feeding the appropriate diet. They delve into uremic toxins and how changes within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in patients with CKD increase the production of uremic toxins, along with their opportunity to further damage the kidneys. You’ll get tips on how to reduce uremic toxins, including supporting the microbiome and moving ingesta through the gut faster. One product that veterinarians will want to add to their toolbox, Dr. Acierno says, is AST-120 (Porus One), an oral adsorbent, which reduces GI uptake of key uremic toxins.

The Role of Immunotherapy in the Treatment and Management of Canine Parvovirus
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and devastating virus that can affect all dogs, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than 4 months old are the most at risk, resulting in a fatality rate greater than 90% if left untreated. In this episode of the VetFolio Voice podcast, Dr. Cassi and Dr. Fred Metzger discuss updates for the management of canine parvovirus. While vaccination can help prevent CPV, there have been no antiviral treatment options for dogs that become infected — until now. Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA) is the first and only USDA-conditionally approved, one-dose parvovirus treatment. This exciting option could help to minimize the severity and course of the disease and decrease shedding of CPV. Dr. Metzger stresses the importance of client communication, especially when parvovirus is suspected in their pets. He explains how CPMA can be utilized as part of the treatment plan, and how it is administered, works, and positively impacts case outcomes, team morale and client relationships.

Scribenote: The Future of Veterinary Medical Records
Medical records have often been referred to as “the source of truth,” and they serve many purposes for veterinary practitioners and their patients. In a perfect world, medical records provide all the details about the patient’s history, clinical findings, diagnostic test results, pre- and postoperative care, prescribed medications, and the patient’s follow up care and progress. When done well, these records can be understood by other veterinary practitioners and will support the veterinarian’s treatment decisions. As a result, many veterinarians feel enormous pressure to produce quality medical records, while still delivering the utmost level of care for their patients and clients. This balancing act can lead to veterinarians staying at the clinic late or coming in on days off and weekends to write and update their patients’ records. Not surprisingly, medical recordkeeping contributes to a workload that is often overwhelming, which is one of the top causes of burnout among veterinarians. In this episode of VetFolio Voice, host Dr. Cassi explores a new medical recordkeeping solution — Scribenote — designed to improve a veterinarian’s work-life balance and provide better efficiency at the clinic. Tune in to hear how Dr. Katie Gallagher’s missed dinners and recordkeeping struggles led her brother Ryan Gallagher to create Scribenote.

New Product Podcast: Simparica® (sarolaner) Chewables
Learn about the study that demonstrated that Simparica blocked the transmission of Lyme and Anaplasmosis in treated dogs.
Listeners will learn about a published, peer-reviewed study designed to test tick protection by Simparica. In this study, Simparica- and placebo-treated dogs were infested with Ixodes scapularis (aka deer) ticks on day 21 and day 28 after treatment. These ticks were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum which was subsequently transmitted to control dogs, as evidenced by positive laboratory tests. Simparica-treated dogs, on the other hand, tested negative at all time points and with every test methodology. This demonstrates that Simparica kills tick quickly, and blocked transmission of these pathogens in these dogs.
