#223 You Don’t Use Google, Google Uses You! (With Prof. Shoshana Zuboff)

This week we welcome the incredible Prof. Shoshana Zuboff, writer, activist, and scholar (Professor Emeritus at Harvard Business School). She is the author of three books, each of which signaled the start of a new epoch in technological society. Her most recent book, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, has been called “the Das Kapital of the 21st Century.” You may recognise Prof. Zuboff from the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, which highlighted how nefarious and powerful big tech companies like Facebook and Google really are. We are now in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, and it is worse than you think. Google, from the time of its inception, intended to mine you for your data, invade your privacy, and use you for profit. Prof. Shoshana Zuboff has the inside information, and reveals all in this episode. #221 How Do We Invent a New Future? (with Daniel Pinchbeck)

This week I spoke with American author Daniel Pinchbeck (Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism and Notes from the Edge Time). Through his research Daniel has developed the hypothesis that shamanic and mystical views of reality have validity, and the modern world has forfeited an understanding of intuitive aspects of being in its pursuit of rational materialism.  In this conversation we interrogate the notion of how we can change society for the better, looking at questions such as: What should and could the future look like? What have philosophers and academics hypothesised? What role does the hard problem of consciousness play in changing society? And what’s going on right now that could be inhibiting positive change—politically and culturally? How do we invent a new future? Let’s discuss. #220 Can We Heal Ourselves Through Consciousness Alone?! (with Dr. Joe Dispenza)

This week I spoke with Dr. Joe Dispenza, a Doctor of Chiropractic, who holds a BA in Science. His training and research covers the fields of neuroscience, neuroplasticity, epigenetics, mind-body medicine, and brain/heart coherence. In this podcast we speak about the power we have to heal ourselves, mentally and physically. How powerful is our consciousness really? How much control does it actually have over our body’s health? Joe talks about the results that experiments have yielded in terms of our self-healing powers. We discuss how one’s attitudes can shape one’s reality, the power of meditation, how to alleviate suffering, and the fascinating power of placebo. It is an incredibly positive and uplifting conversation that we hope you enjoy! #219 Compromise and the Power of Free Speech (with Dr. Jordan Peterson)

This week I am joined once again by Dr. Jordan Peterson! I imagine most of you are aware of Dr. Jordan by now, he has been on Under the Skin three times, and each time we’ve had a fantastic conversation about philosophy, myth, culture and power. This conversation was equally great; in it we try to understand how it’s possible to bridge the gap when it comes to those with whom we disagree and are in opposition to. The two of us talk about the importance of free speech, new ideas, and the value in compromise! #218 Position vs. Disposition (with Jimmy Carr)

This week I spoke with friend and fellow comedian Jimmy Carr! Jimmy Carr is a British stand-up comedian, TV show host, and author. His latest book is Before & Laughter: The Funniest Man in the UK’s Genuinely Useful Guide to Life. Jimmy is an incredibly successful entertainer, but he didn’t start of his career that way; he made some brave choices with the help of neurolinguistic programming. He offers some excellent advise, quotes, and philosophical musings on many topics throughout this episode—from grief and flow states, to our position in the world, and our disposition in response to the world around us. #217 What’s Really Going on with Privilege and Class? (with John Barnes)

This week I spoke with a very interesting guest with a very interesting perspective on a topic that can be difficult to discuss. John Barnes is a former footballer and author of The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism. He was born and raised in Jamaica and is the son of a military officer. He later moved to England and became one of the best football players of his time. In this conversation John talks about how class is ignored when we talk about problems of race and “racial incidents.” He thinks we need to stop showcasing elite people as a sign of progress while we simultaneously continue to ignore people who are lost in poverty and who don’t benefit from things like white privilege, the patriarchy, and heteronormativity. The issues are more complex, and by vilifying those who are worse off in society we are creating more division. He also gives his thoughts on cancel culture and how he sees real change happening. It’s an incredibly provocative and fascinating episode. Let me know what you think. #215 The Power Of Meditation and the Science Behind It (with Dr. Amishi Jha)

This week I’m joined by Dr. Amishi Jha! Dr. Amishi is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami and Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. She studies mindfulness meditation and writes about the observable affects it has on brains and our attention, and is the author of Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day. In this episode Amishi explains in detail how our minds operate in terms of our focus and attention. What is happening neurologically at any given moment and how do our environment and our internal states affect this? How does mindfulness meditation affect this? The answer is…A LOT. If you had any skepticism around the power of meditation, allow Dr. Amishi to quell any suspicion and to, in fact, present you with the evidence. Of course, we discuss the spiritual and transcendental aspects of meditation, too, as we both believe there is more going on than we can currently measure. #213 Fearlessness and Fighting Power (with Dr. Vandana Shiva)

This week I was fortunate to have Vandana Shiva return as a guest on the podcast. Her first interview on Under the Skin was one of my favourites, and as many of you noticed, moved me very much. Vandana is an Indian scholar, food sovereignty advocate, and environmental activist. She is author of: Oneness vs. the 1%: Shattering Illusions, Seeding Freedom. She is powerful, compassionate, and incredibly well educated. In this episode we talk about the real affect globalisation has on the world, the failings of COP26, the manipulation occurring at governmental levels by billionaires, and how we can cultivate fearlessness in order to stand up against the powerful to fight for what’s right and necessary. #211 Fighting Corruption Using a Spiritual Perspective (with Sarah Chayes)

This week’s episode is fantastic! I am joined by Sarah Chayes, who was recommended to me during my episode with Sebastian Junger. Sarah Chayes is an author and a journalist, and has worked as a political advisor. She writes primarily about the nature of corruption. Her books include Thieves of State: Why Corruption Threatens Global Security, and most recently: On Corruption in America: And What Is at Stake which is coming out in paperback in the US next week. This is a fascinating conversation with someone who possesses incredible experience. Sarah talks about her time in Afghanistan, her stint as a political advisor to the military, and her understanding of corruption that exists at every level of power. We get deep and philosophical about how this affects us as humans, and how we can fight corruption.  In the UK Sarah’s book On Corruption in America is titled Everybody Knows: Corruption in America if you’re looking to buy a copy.More Info: Get Sarah’s books here: https://www.sarahchayes.org/books Come see me live; check out upcoming dates: https://www.russellbrand.com/live-dates/ My meditation podcast, Above the Noise, is out now, only on Luminary. #210 Is There a Point to Left Wing Politics? (with Jeremy Gilbert)

This week I spoke with Jeremy Gilbert. Jeremy is a Professor of Cultural and Political Theory at the University of East London. He is author of Twenty-First Century Socialism, and his latest book Hegemony Now: How Big Tech and Wall Street Won the World is out next year.   As a big fan of the late Mark Fisher’s work, particularly his book Capitalist Realism (for which I did the audiobook recording), I was intrigued to learn that Mark and Jeremy were associates. And I felt very compelled to speak to Jeremy about his work and outlook on politics. This episode is a very down-to-earth, realistic and in-depth discussion about the work of the left wing in politics. What does the left stand for? What are they doing right now? Is it working? #204 A Global Health Con and How To Stop It (with Dr. Bob Gill)

This week’s episode is very important. Today I spoke with Dr. Bob Gill a British-based GP who is fighting against the privatisation of The NHS (In Britain, that is the National Health Service.) Dr. Gill explains, clearly and thoroughly, how our healthcare is being taken from us and given to private companies in order to fleece us for our money--and, even more devastatingly, to let those who can’t afford healthcare die. #203 Should We Hijack Political Parties or Start A Revolution?

This week I spoke with Krystal Ball. Krystal is a progressive American commentator who, along with right-wing commentator Saagar Enjeti, co-hosts the podcast/video show Breaking Points. (The duo previously hosted a popular show for The Hill.)  Krystal and I discuss many of the issues that divide left and right-wing politics. We explore how politicians fear the media and thus are controlled by their narratives. I delve into whether or not Krystal, as a progressive, feels that her respect for the Democratic Party has been eroded. Plus, we reflect on actions and options: What should we do? Should we hijack a political party and use their position to make change, or should we start from scratch and start a revolution, scrapping the entire system completely? Krystal has some very interesting, balanced, and thoughtful ideas on all of these questions; her answers will appeal to those on every side of the political spectrum. More info Krystal also hosts a progressive podcast Krystal, Kyle & Friends. #202 The Moral Conundrums of Politics

This week I spoke with Tim Pool. Tim is a journalist, activist, and one of the biggest political YouTubers of the moment. He initially became known for livestreaming the 2011 Occupy Wall Street protests. Tim is also known for discussing some of the more difficult questions in relation to politics, including: the issues that divide The Left and The Right, and the issues that cause some of the biggest political fracas and conflicts in the US right now. What are the correct answers? Is it possible to bridge the political divide? Where does the question of individual sovereignty, morality, and civil rights come to a head? This episode tries to tackle those issues, or at least discuss them. More info  Tim Pool operates four channels and a subscription model website TimCast.com. This week I spoke with John Higgs! John is a writer, journalist and cultural historian. He writes extensively about William Blake and counter-cultural figures like Alan Moore and Timothy Leary. #196 How To Shake Off Trauma (with Dr. David Berceli)

This week I spoke with Dr. David Berceli. David is an expert in the areas of trauma intervention and conflict resolution. He is the creator of Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises which are designed to help release the deep tension created in the body--during a traumatic experience, or through chronic stress. In this episode, we discuss the idea of post-traumatic growth: Do we grow and learn from our trauma, and does it ultimately makes us stronger? Where and why do we store trauma in our bodies and what are subsequent consequences? David teaches people, through his simple TRE exercises, how to release trauma from the body in order to aid illness, both physical and mental. He tells me how he discovered these techniques; we discuss the similarities these techniques have with ecstatic states and transcendent bodily feelings; and how some of us are so conditioned to be composed at all times we’ve lost the ability to relax, let go, or even cry. We cover everything from politics, spirituality and individualism, to how can it be possible to remain positive and optimistic when we often experience so much malevolence in the world? We debate the idea of progressivism and whether we should celebrate or be suspect of the progress societies and cultures have made. Are we being duped? I question Jordan on why he is so popular among men and why he is often criticised and disliked by women. We dissect some of those famous media interviews. #174 The Horror of Brand Power (with Joel Bakan)

Joel Bakan is an American-Canadian writer, filmmaker, and professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia. Joel has recently published a book, The New Corporation: How “Good” Corporations are Bad for Democracy, and released a documentary film based upon it. You can find out more about both at joelbakan.com. In Joel’s early documentary film “The Corporation” he famously said that corporations are psychopaths. In this podcast we extrapolate from that discuss how power has shifted from government to corporations as they try to take over every aspect of our lives. What does this mean for democracy? How much power are we willing to give over to these companies? And are they really trying to do “good” or is just a facade to yield more control and ultimately...profit? This is what Joel explores further in his new film and book, he talks about his trip to Davos and the people and CEOs he encountered there who endeavour to change the world, but is it for the better?

#167 Crossing boundaries and Reclaiming land (with Nick Hayes)

This week’s guest is Nick Hayes! Nick is an author, illustrator, print-maker and political cartoonist. He has published four highly acclaimed graphic novels, each one in separate ways focuses on mankind’s relationship with the environment. I’ve just read his latest book The Book of Trespass: Crossing the Lines That Divide Us, that came out last year. It my favourite Christmas present! We discuss the nature of trespassing and the social, political and cultural impacts it has on us. We only have access to 8% of the English countryside, the rest is hidden behind walls and protected by private property laws. Why can’t we swim in a river? Or roam through a forest? Why do these laws exist and why aren’t they being challenged? Nick explains the history of how trespassing laws came into existence and what he is doing to change them with his Right to Roam campaign. Is private property law furthering the disconnection we have with nature and pushing it towards commodification? Has this also become a class issue, where nature and natural beauty spots are now reserved for those who can pay to access them? This is a particularly fascinating podcast that will hopefully inspire you to explore more and join Nick in his Right to Roam campaign. #154 Why We Must Wake Up To Plastic Free Life (with Kate Nelson)

This week I spoke with Kate Nelson (AKA Plastic Free Mermaid)! Kate is an avid waterwoman, science communicator, plastics consultant, and author of “I Quit Plastics: And You Can Too”.  We discuss how imminent the need to change the way we consume is, whether we have any power to change production and challenge big corporations, and why the culture of environmentalism, recycling and farmer’s markets has bourgeois connotations. What will make the majority of people change the way they behave?  Activism Kate’s conservation work is currently centred in supporting two plastic activism causes:  1. Plastic Free Byron: a local initiative to help her hometown phase out single-use plastics. She is fundraising this through "Products with Purpose" that can be purchased on her website and she is documenting the process as a case study for others to implement in their towns. 2. Plastic Health Summit: an international summit on the emerging science on plastic's impact on humans and the environment. She is helping to report on and amplify this breaking research this month. Follow her on Instagram for entertaining educational solutions and tips to quit plastics PLUS updates on her current plastics activism campaigns. She translates science for top international plastics researchers through fascinating and fun interviews on her Youtube channel and Instagram channel. She prioritises this work due to the incredibly negative health implications caused by our daily overexposure to plastics--from synthetic carpets to plastic packaging to fast fashion. When she learned plastic doesn't biodegrade, she quit using plastics. When she learned our contact with plastic causes obesity, developmental disorders, cancer, heart disease, and infertility--she dedicated her career to helping translate this important science. The science which competes with the convenience plastic offers. Youtube: youtube.com/c/plasticfreemermaid Her book ‘I QUIT PLASTICS’ is available now: www.iquitplastics.com/book She offers in person Mermaid Retreats as well as an online Mermaid Retreat to adventure into one's higher purpose, deepen one's nature connection, meet like-minded mermaids, and quit plastics.  Online Mermaid Retreat: www.plasticfreemermaid.teachable.com

#104 Science, Capitalism & God (with Neil deGrasse Tyson)

This week’s guest on Under The Skin is the infamous astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson! He’s pretty amazing. He was promoting his book ‘Letters From An Astrophysicist’ but he was more than that…being a focused and dedicated educator. I enjoyed talking to him. The main thrust of it was me going, “yeah, come on, there must be God!”. It was actually my ongoing argument that it’s hard to apply the tools of science to realms that may be beyond sensory experience and how can science claim to be objective as it exist within a capitalist consumer culture that has certain agendas and objectives? We also discussed the way in which science has propelled human understanding and how we interface with the unknowable, what role ancient spiritual texts have played and whether science is controlled by the rich and powerful? I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
