How To Know If You're Codependent [& What to Do About It] with New York Times Bestselling Author Melody Beattie

Hello my friends and welcome back to Too Smart For This! This week's episode is with New York Times Bestselling Author Melody Beattie, who wrote the critically acclaimed CODEPENDENT NO MORE: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself. Since its publication in 1986, the book has sold over 7 million copies and continues to help countless readers heal. For the first time, Beattie unflinchingly reveals her personal story. She also addresses trauma and anxiety in an all-new chapter—subjects she has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency. She has broadened the lens to address a wide range of compulsive behaviors—making the book even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago. Glennon Doyle, Jen Hatmaker, Brené Brown, Whitney Cummings, and many others have been vocal about the importance of CODEPENDENT NO MORE in their lives—and this new edition is poised to reach a new generation of readers. Melody Beattie's compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie's own life and the lives of those she's counseled, CODEPENDENT NO MORE helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries, and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness. 15. Why Do We Love Black Women’s Culture, but Fail to Love Them or Allow Them To Love Themselves?

In this episode, I talk about society’s love to appropriate Black women’s culture and aesthetics, but their failure to show up for Black female humanity - as represented through the lack of support for them in every industry, the high rate of deaths for Black Trans Women, and the abuse, neglect, and failure to support Black women in the medical field as well. Stereotypes like the “strong” and “angry” Black woman are what are keeping us from accepting Black women, and I tell stories of how that has changed my life and kept me from being my full self too.

09. @bykwest on Blackness in the Wellness Space, Managing 3 Jobs, and Launching A Business

Kira West is a content creator and community cultivator who’s passion is making wellness inclusive. Kira is a proud Black woman with Caribbean roots born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.Her journey into wellness began with an adventurous spirit and an insatiable desire to travel. Kira was determined to find all of the opportunities she could to experience the world. Her fearless spirit allowed her to travel the world, exploring 6 continents and over 40 countries, often solo. Kira’s love of travel influenced her desire to investigate ways to seek balance in her life and live most optimally. Her journey to seek and define balance was intertwined with Kira’s desire to define for herself the meaning of wellness. Her experience led her to focus on not only travel but fitness and running. These then became the elements that defined Kira’s idea of wellness.Kira asked herself the question, what does a “well” life really look like. As she searched for these answers she found that it is truly different for everyone but it can include fitness, travel, varying forms of self-care, relationships, friendships and new experiences. Kira found that her personal definition of wellness included travel and fitness. Kira, upon defining these elements, also found that often Black and other underserved communities were not included in conversations surrounding wellness, travel or fitness. As Kira began to delve into the lack of diversity and inclusion within the wellness space, she became even more passionate about making wellness inclusive for all. She wants to empower people to seek their own definitions of wellness while also making the space more inclusive. She firmly believes wellness is a right for all and not an exclusive privilege for some.
