REVISIT: Overcoming Bedtime Fears

Is your toddler’s desire to delay dozing off driving you to distraction? Bedtime fears usually start at around two years and may last several years. They happen very commonly because children spend their days in imaginative play, and it is tough for them to turn that off at bedtime. Even though there are many valid reasons for your toddler to fight at bedtime, you still need a chance to get some rest. Your needs matter and you have less to give when you need to recharge. So there is no need to feel guilty about wanting your child to sleep so you can take some time for yourself. In this episode, I talk about bedtime fears and how to overcome them. I go into why children have those fears and explain why they tend to happen from a developmental perspective. Stay tuned to learn how to lovingly, respectfully, and effectively manage your toddler’s bedtime fears. Five things likely to contribute to your toddler’s bedtime fears: Young kids experience separation anxiety, so it makes sense that they fuss when you leave the room. Toddlers tend to be defiant by nature because they want more control over their world. A toddler’s brain is still developing. So they have so little control over their emotions. Toddlers do not understand the concept of time. So when you tell them you will see them in the morning, it seems forever away. The frontal lobe of a toddler’s brain is still developing. That is the part that allows us to reason, problem-solve, and make plans. So they are not able to talk themselves down. Show highlights: Five things likely to contribute to bedtime fears from a developmental perspective. Why is an early bedtime best? The benefits of creating a short bedtime routine. Some effective ways to manage your toddler’s bedtime fears. The importance of creating a responsible and healthy bedtime routine. How to take charge of your child’s bedtime routine. Some calming strategies that you can teach your child to develop. How to use deep breathing in the present moment. How to stay on the same team as your child. Some easy steps to help you manage bedtimes without getting wound up. I have a bite-size course coming up soon on managing bedtime like a pro. I’ll tell you more in a future episode. Calm, Connect, and Communicate With Your Toddler

Join Dr. Cathryn in this episode as she guides you through handling tough toddler moments with calmness and empathy. Learn to see past the surface behavior and understand your child's emotions. For example, if your toddler says "I hate the baby", instead of ignoring these feelings, acknowledge and understand them. Think about how you feel when someone dismisses your bad day; your child needs to feel heard just like you do. And teach them to express big emotions with words, not actions. Keep in mind, it's completely natural for toddlers to go through a wide spectrum of emotions. The key is in how they convey these feelings. In today’s discussion, we’re zeroing in on addressing the emotional side of handling challenging behaviors. Next week, we'll shift our focus to the behavioral side – setting boundaries and maintaining them effectively. Prevent Picky Eating

Navigating picky eating in toddlers is a common challenge rooted in their developmental journey toward food independence and exploration of tastes. To ease this phase, it's crucial to avoid pressuring a toddler to eat and instead adopt a relaxed approach. Create a positive mealtime atmosphere by emphasizing enjoyable family gatherings, focusing on the meal experience over food, and keeping mealtimes technology-free for bonding. Steer clear of pressure-inducing phrases and avoid labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad.' Encouraging children to make some food choices can fulfill their need for independence, and remember that your role is to decide what, where, and when they eat while a child determines how much they eat. Involving kids in meal planning, cooking, and grocery shopping can engage them with food. Patience is key, as changes in eating habits take time. If picky eating is accompanied by significant behavioral challenges, consulting a doctor is advisable.Actionable takeaways:- Avoid pressuring kids to eat.- Create a positive mealtime atmosphere.- Refrain from using pressure-inducing phrases.- Encourage children to make food choices.- Involve kids in meal planning and cooking.Links and resources: Follow Dr. Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyCheck out our bestselling online course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseOur NEW Potty Training Made Easy course is here!Get the Dynamic Duo: Toddler Tamining + Potty Training courses and save $20Does potty training terrify you? Become the Big-Hearted Parent Your Child Needs (and Deserves)

After working as a pediatrician for more than a quarter of a century, I have learned many big lessons. One of which is that parents are naturally big-hearted. When I think of big-hearted parenting, I imagine shedding the negative lens of the terrible twos, and instead, embracing toddlers as incredible, wonderfully unique little individuals who require our support, guidance, and understanding. Let’s dive into big-hearted parenting together and help our children feel seen, heard, understood, and valued! Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Why Kids Need Emotional Vitamins

Parents often reach out to me concerned about their child's challenging behaviors, such as hitting, throwing toys, and not listening. They wonder how to manage these behaviors while still respecting their child and setting boundaries. If this sounds like you, then know you aren’t alone! This is a very common concern! In this episode, we are going to explore the concept of emotional vitamins and their importance in parenting. When we focus solely on fixing behavior problems, we miss the opportunity to prevent these situations from happening again. Emotional vitamins are small acts of love and kindness that make children feel seen, heard, understood, and valued. They contribute to good behavior by meeting the emotional need for love and creating a strong emotional foundation between you and your child. Emotional vitamins could be physical touch, kind and loving words, or quality together time. By incorporating these gestures into daily life, we can strengthen our bond with our children, boost their self-esteem, and create a loving and secure attachment. Remember, even the little things matter the most when it comes to emotional vitamins! Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. How Toddlers Say, "You Hurt My Feelings!"

Feel like your toddler is acting out, or throwing more fits than normal, and you’re not sure why? Toddlers often lack the verbal skills to articulate their emotions, but they rely on us as their parents to understand and interpret their behavior. Sometimes this looks like acting out or throwing a “fit”. By asking the right questions and peeling away the layers, we can uncover the underlying feelings and needs behind their actions. It's important for us to recognize and validate their emotions, creating an environment where they feel safe and valued. Why Toddlers Don't Need Toilet Training

Today, we’re diving into a hot topic, potty training! More specifically, we're chatting about why traditional potty training is totally outdated, and your toddler doesn't need it. I mean, come on, who has the time and patience for that anyway? Traditional toilet training is all about control and punishment, which is not cool for our little munchkins' emotional health.Let's give our toddlers the power they crave and let them learn to use the potty naturally. Just like when they learned to walk, we provided the right environment and let them try and try until they nailed it. And trust me, your little ones will feel so proud of themselves when they finally master peeing and pooping in the potty. But before you start, I've got a new strategy for you called pre-potty training or toilet training warm-up. Think of it as a little warm-up before you hit the gym. And to make it even easier, I've created a mini e-book for you with the five must-dos before starting potty training. It's filled with strategies to make the process a breeze, even if your little one doesn't show any signs of readiness. So, if you're ready to ditch the old ways and embrace the new, check out the link below for the 5 Must-Dos Before Potty Training E-Book. Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Why Kids Tattle and What to Do About It

Do you have a tattle tale? If so, today’s episode is for you. Let me paint a picture. Three-and-a-half-year-old Sam is a sweet kid, but he's in the habit of tattling on his older brother Eric, who is just six years old. Whenever Eric does something that Sam thinks isn't nice or fair, he runs to his parents and tells on him. For example, if Eric takes one of Sam's toys or accidentally drops something, Sam runs to his parents and says, Eric did it.Tattling happens after a child has stopped managing problems in physical ways like hitting or biting, but he or she hasn't yet developed a more sophisticated way of solving things.Children who tattle have enough social and emotional skills to stop the hitting, but not enough to solve problems without some help.A toddler may tattle to exert their power and see if they can get a rise out of you.Create a space or a moment between your child's behavior and your response to it. In other words, just pause for a moment before saying a word. Ready to combat tattletales? Help your child feel seen. When they feel seen, their need to tattletale gradually diminishes. You can empower your child by equipping them with the tools to manage problems on their own. With time, tattletales will fizzle out. But in the meantime, also remember the power of exclusive time or special time or magic time, whatever you wanna call it, for just 10 minutes a day. Let your child choose what they want to do and then the two of you do that together. Playing with your toddler, just the two of you for 10 minutes a day is a research-based way to ease messy toddler behaviors.Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Overcoming Bedtime Fears

Is your toddler’s desire to delay dozing off driving you to distraction?Bedtime fears usually start at around two years and may last several years. How to Calm Tantrums

Did you know that you can reduce troublesome tantrums by tapping into what’s causing them? Toddlers’ tantrums can be wild, irrational, and confusing. So it helps to understand that tantrums are a normal part of a toddler’s development because their brains are still developing. When a tantrum happens, the toddler’s right brain, which is the part that is emotional, impulsive, and tuned into non-verbal cues, overwhelms the left brain and takes control. Fortunately, your adult brain is balanced, and you can use it to calm your toddler down. Children cannot process anything when they are all worked up. So in this episode, I discuss the three phases of a tantrum and share strategies for managing toddlers' tantrums without losing your cool. Tune in to learn how to deal with tantrums in the present moment, and find out how and when to intervene to calm a tantrum down.Show highlights:Why must we handle tantrums calmly? Why tantrums are likely as hard on your child as they are for you. When are toddlers more likely to have a tantrum?Ways to reduce your toddler’s tantrums. How to deal with tantrums in the moment. How and when to intervene to calm a tantrum down. The three phases of a tantrum.Things that could prolong tantrums. The benefits of pausing to allow your nervous system to calm down. How to teach your kids limits and help them move on after a tantrum. What to avoid doing or saying.Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Sibling Rivalry

Did you know that treating siblings as equals fuels friction and fighting? Sibling relationships are complex. Observational studies have shown that some siblings fight as often as eight times an hour! Yet those relationships are essential for shaping children, and from a developmental standpoint, sibling rivalry helps kids figure out their distinctive qualities. Siblings support one another and learn from each other. But they also compete for their parent's love and attention. So when we strive for equality with our children, they will always tally up and try to figure out who got more than the others. The more a child is validated and seen, the more secure they feel. In this episode, I focus on why children should be treated as individuals rather than equals and explain how treating kids as individuals improves sibling relationships. Stay tuned for more!Show highlights:What happens when we strive for equality with our kids? What happens when we treat our children as individuals? What sibling rivalry is all about from the child's perspective. The benefits of not trying to make everything fair, and focusing instead on treating each child as unique. Why it is a good idea to make individuality a priority when giving your children gifts. Should mealtime portions be the same for each child? What sibling fights may be saying about what a child is feeling. Why it is essential to spend some special-focus time daily with each child.Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Separation Anxiety in Toddlers

Do you dread the despair of difficult daily drop-offs?The woeful look on a toddler’s face when parting makes it hard for parents to walk away without feeling heartbroken and guilty. Most children become clingy between eighteen months and three years of age, and all kids experience anxiety at some point in their early years. So it’s normal and expected for toddlers to feel sad and stressed when saying goodbye. Every child is different, and they all develop at their own pace, so we never know when those painful partings will appear or fade away. Still, it is encouraging to know that children do outgrow separation anxiety. Parents need to help their children handle separation in a healthy way. In today’s episode, I dive into how to do that. I also explain why you should never sneak out after dropping your toddler off and share something I discovered that made a massive difference after many weeks of difficult drop-offs.Stay tuned for more!Show highlights:Why must you avoid waiting around to see if your child has settled down? How to make your child feel seen and understood. Why you should never sneak out.The benefits of developing a goodbye ritual. How to prepare your child for daily drop-offs.How I solved my daughter’s drop-off problems. The importance of staying on the same team and asking your child how you can help. How reading books helps with separation anxiety.A way to stay connected after you leave. Some coping skills you can teach your child to practice. An E.A.S.Y. strategy for keeping calm in those tricky toddler moments. Links and resources:Follow Dr. Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyCheck out our bestselling online course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseSign up for our Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Don't Force Sharing

Did you know that toddlers cannot comprehend the concept of sharing?Snatching toys and shouting “mine” is not a sign of selfishness in toddlers. It only happens because they have no idea what sharing is. Issues around sharing- or not sharing can cause a lot of uncertainty and embarrassment and may even lead parents to doubt themselves. That’s why we need to understand that toddlers are not being selfish when they fail to share. They are simply finding ways to understand the world around them.Sharing is challenging for toddlers because they don't understand that separate individuals exist. That means they cannot see things from someone else’s point of view, which is necessary to know what sharing is. They also cannot fathom that some things belong to others, and their toddler's brains are still growing, so their impulse areas are not yet fully developed. In this episode, I answer a question from a lovely mom and offer some helpful parenting tools to teach toddlers to stand up for themselves while also being kind and open-hearted. Stay tuned for more!Show highlights:At what age do kids start understanding the concept of sharing? What toddlers experience when they get forced to share early on.The first step to giving a toddler some direction around sharing. How to respond when your toddler grabs a toy from another child. The benefits of using sportscasting to help your child resolve their problems. What you can do when your toddler cries because they are not allowed to grab a toy from a friend. How to prepare your child at home before taking them to the park. What could happen when a child gets forced to share before they are ready? Some powerful lessons to guide your child.Links and resources:Follow Dr. Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyCheck out our bestselling online course: Learn the proven strategies to help you deal with your toddler in a way that lets you be the best parent you can be. We've got 2 new courses to help you navigate these tricky times!Toddlers Made EasyPotty Training Made EasySign up today!Links and resources: Follow Dr. Thumb-Sucking: Do’s and Don'ts

Toddlers suck their thumb when bored, falling asleep, upset, and watching tv. It creates a yummy feeling, like a day at the spa. Over time, kids develop other calming skills and typically give the habit up. But what if they don’t? Most kids will stop sucking their thumbs around 2-4 years of age, or by the time the permanent teeth are ready to erupt. That is, as long as we don’t pester our kids about thumb-sucking. When we pressure our kids to stop, we may inadvertently cause more thumbsucking. So, today let’s talk about how you can help your toddler break the habit.INSTAGRAMFollow Dr Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyTODDLERS MADE EASY courseCheck out our course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseBECOME THE PARENT EVERY KID WANTSSign up for our FREE parenting strategies: Get Toddler Smart You'll get clear and solid parenting insights that will CALM your nerves, SAVE you frustration, and UP your confidence. FREE TAME TANTRUMS workshopWatch our FREE Tame Tantrums workshop and manage tantrums without losing your cool.Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If this sounds like you: "I love Toddlers Made Easy." <-- please consider rating and reviewing my show! How to Stop Your Toddler From Throwing Things

No one wants their kids flinging toys/objects across the room. I’m not talking about a friendly game of catch. I’m talking about when the remote control goes flying because you said, “No, sweetheart, you can’t have cake for breakfast.” In this episode, Dr. Cathryn helps us understand why kids throw things and how to end this habit in ways that protect a child’s dignity, curiosity, and self-esteem. FREE TAME TANTRUMS MASTERCLASSWatch our FREE Tame Tantrums Masterclass and manage tantrums without losing your temperINSTAGRAMFollow Dr Cathryn on Instagram: @healthiest_babyTODDLERS MADE EASY courseCheck out our course: Toddlers Made Easy CourseWEEKLY PARENTING INSIGHTSSign up for our FREE weekly parenting tips: Get Toddler Smart I'll send you a short weekly e-mail with a clear and solid parenting insight that will CALM your nerves, SAVE you frustration, and UP your confidence. Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If this sounds like you: "I love Toddlers Made Easy." <-- please consider rating and reviewing my show! How to Stop Your Child's Whining

Kids whine for many reasons, but driving you crazy isn’t actually one of them. Toddlers lack sophistication… and moaning and groaning is their way of saying, “I need you. Please take care of me.” Instead of viewing whining as a toddler trying to manipulate you, remember that whining is a toddler's attempt at trying to be seen and heard. They just lack the tools to do this. So, how can we help our kids communicate more effectively?3 PRO-TIPS:1. When you want to get through to a toddler, use playfulness. It works like magic because it speaks to them where they’re at developmentally and emotionally. 2. Try responding to whining in a whisper. For many kids, it works let a reset. 3. If your kids are whining because they’re tired, bored, hungry, or scared, you’ll need to take care of those needs first.
