With the holidays nearly behind us, it's time to take a look back at some great releases from 2018. Deep into December 2018, we're nearly past the holiday season. Still, I've got five more holiday tracks, along with Billy F. Gibbons, B.B. King, Maria Muldaur, Charley Crockett, and Johnny Rawls. As we roll through the holiday season, I've got five more Christmas blues tracks in this hour. I've also got a set of swing blues and one that can only be described as stark. Grammy nominees, a familiar local act and plenty more new holiday music - that's the crux of this hour. We're rolling into the fall in the northern hemisphere, a time when blues labels are pushing out new releases for holiday consumption. After a week of chair-dancing, we're back to a huge variety of new blues in The Roadhouse. I've got quite a few female artists, some uptempo blues, an interesting minimalist set, and a track from the late Tony Joe White. I've also got Anthony Geraci, Dana Fuchs, Eric Bibb, The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, and Joe Louis Walker, Bruce Katz & Giles Robson. Rather than focusing on new releases this week, I've focused on making this another "chair-dancing" edition. Kid Ramos, Kai Strauss, Sean Costello, Andy Santana, and Janiva Magness give you reason to move around. You might do that in your chair, you might grab someone close, you might get up and dance by yourself, but I think the hour is irresistably movable. It'll make you want to dance, all while delivering another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

There's a big mix of stuff in this hour. I've got some great Chicago blues artists, some next generation blues rock, electric, acoustic - maybe just a full sense of blues today. Otis Rush, Sari Schorr, Seasick Steve, Eric Bibb, and Ben Poole. We can circle around it any way we want. The rain around The Roadhouse Studios brings a little quieter tone, despite a riotous opening track. Jim Allchin, Boz Scaggs, Aki Kumar, Maria Muldaur, and Mike Morgan & The Crawl lead the way. It's kind of hard to put a finger on a theme. But, regardless of the tone and mood, I know you're going to find it to be, as always, another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 709th Roadhouse.

In this hour, I've got a variety of musical styles, a variety of tempos, even a variety of instrumentation. There's a good chance it'll make you quit paying attention to what's going on around you. With Ana Popovic, Otis Grand, John Oates, Larkin Poe, and Mark Hummel, you know there's something that will pull you out of the hustle-bustle. So, sit back and escape for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 708th Roadhouse.

This hour of The Roadhouse features mostly upbeat blues. I also have a lot of outstanding guitar and a couple of songs with strong messages. Fred Chapellier & The Gents feat Dale Blade, Bruce Katz Band, Tom Hambridge, John Clifton, Big George Jackson take the lead. For all the variety, the important thing to remember is consistency. It's another hour in The Roadhouse. Along with a big bunch of contemporary artists, I've got a 4-track set of more traditional post-war blues, and a closing set that's three-quarters female. We're past Labor Day in the US and into unofficial fall - into the last third of 2018. And, once again, the vast majority of the music in this hour is from 2018. Trudy Lynn, Corey Dennison & Gerry Hundt, Bettye LaVette, Anthony Geraci, and The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling move us just a bit closer to the end of the calendar year. Elvin Bishop's Big Fun Trio, Howlin' Wolf, Aki Kumar, Mark Wenner's Blues Warriors, and Rod Piazza get the featured slots in this hour of The Roadhouse. Most of the music is from Chicago or the West Coast, there's quite a bit of harp, and even a few more instrumentals than usual. It all adds up, though, to a variety of blues that will have you nodding your head in agreement that it's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 704th Roadhouse.

A puzzle - that's the spirit of the hour in The Roadhouse. And all the pieces fit together just fine. Bob Corritore, Danielle Nicole, Eric Lindell, Luke Winslow-King, and the Bruce Katz Band mesh in a way that makes perfect sense in the framework of an hour. Aretha Franklin gets the show-opener this week with a track that's mighty close to blues. As for the rest of the hour - it's filled with brand new music that will have you admiring the state of blues today. Aki Kumar, Alastair Greene, Cedric Burnside, Nakia, and Eugene Hideaway Bridges get the featured slots along with two Roadhouse debuts. This hour might just define "blues crazy." Cash Box Kings, Mike Zito, Elvin Bishop, Carey Bell, and The 44s help to lay down a groove like few we've had in the 700 hours before. I could paint it a whole bunch of different ways, but it comes down to this - this hour is fun. This week we note 700 shows, 700 hours and roughly 9100 tracks. It does seem just a little ways from 2005. But we do roll on with an hour of great new blues, including Sister Mercy, Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Bruce Katz Band, and one for my fellow blues presenter Dave Raven. As we roll from July into August, I roll out almost a full hour of new releases. Piper-Hopkins Band, Vanja Sky, Shemekia Copeland, Gina Sicilia, and Doghouse Sam & His Magnatones round things out this week. The selection is eclectic. I'm excited about this edition of The Roadhouse because the puzzle pieces all fit together so well. Tom Hambridge, Tas Cru, Bryce Janey, Jeff Jensen, and Etta Britt will blow you away with great blues. Blow you away, that is, with the finest blues you've never heard - the 693rd Roadhouse.

In this hour of The Roadhouse, it's all blues, but in some cases it's branched off a bit into blues rock and R&B. Just as spring brings a fresh new feeling to things, this hour of The Roadhouse is chock full of fresh new releases. Lurrie Bell & The Bell Dynasty, Van Morrison & Joey DeFrancesco, Marcia Ball, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite, and Dana Fuchs - all releases from just within the past few weeks. It's a fresh hour of new music and, of course, a fresh hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 687th Roadhouse.

The hour ahead might have the most female blues artists of any edition of The Roadhouse. There's no particular reason - it's just the way the playlist fell as I pulled it together. Peter Parcek, Ray Manzared & Roy Rogers, Michelle Malone, Suzie Vinnick, and JJ Grey & Mofro fill out the hour. It's a lot of female voices and a lot of the finest blues you've never heard - the 686th Roadhouse.

There's a bunch of new music in this hour, along with a live set and a set of blues rock. Rockwell Avenue Blues Band, Kris Barras Band, Love Light Orchestra, Original Chicago Blues All-Stars, and Carlos Del Junco all deliver tracks from just the past few months. It’s back to the norm this week after a special anniversary review of show openers. Of course, the norm is to mix up blues styles and push out a lot of new blues releases. Sue Foley, Danielle Nicole, Mud Morganfield, John Mayall, and Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps definitely support that approach. Of the 15 tracks in the hour, 12 are from 2018. It's not all that unusual in The Roadhouse to mix it up a bit. I'm staying with that approach in this hour. The Thanksgiving weekend brings a Roadhouse Rewind. I’ll be back with a new hour next week. The variety of blues in this edition of The Roadhouse is like looking into a big valley of blues in all its hues and shades. Matt Woods & The Thunderbolts, Gary Clark, Jr, Guy Tortora, Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Samuel James help create the hour. It's late in the year but the lineup of great new blues just doesn't stop. This hour of The Roadhouse backs off just a little from the normal up-tempo mode of the show while projecting a different kind of energy. I've got a young show in this edition, featuring quite a few artists who are under 40. That helps to provide a very contemporary feel. The theme of the hour is a retrospective on the musical life of Gregg Allman, along with The Allman Brothers Band. Since it's impossible to put together a comprehensive view of their music in just an hour, I've pulled together some of my favorites. I've got a couple of tracks you've heard and some you may not. While it's sad to mark his passing, by the end of the hour, we can celebrate the musical contribution of Gregg Allman. Family graduations two days and five hundred miles apart mean you get a Roadhouse Rewind for show 638. This week we mark the passing of Lonnie Brooks with a family set. I've also got blues from all over the place. We jump back into the flow that you've come to expect from The Roadhouse after a slight diversion in the last hour. We lost another blues great this week with the passing of James Cotton. This edition of The Roadhouse is a rememberance that keeps the context of his musical impact at the forefront. Of course, his context is unequivically Chicago and the legendary blues scene in that city. So, this hour is centered in Chicago, focused on James Cotton, and surrounded by artists who also helped to contribute in making his time in the blues some of the best. Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Luther Allison, and, of course, James Cotton make for another hour in The Roadhouse of the finest blues - the 629th Roadhouse Podcast.

There's a regional focus in this hour of The Roadhouse, from a part of the US you might not know for its great blues tradition. Lil' Stevie & The Westsiders, Professor Harp, Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, and Paul Rishell & Annie Raines help fuel an hour of what we'll call New England blues. But, it doesn't really matter what you call it as long as you call it another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 628th Roadhouse.

This hour of The Roadhouse works to rectify an admitted deficit of female blues artists to male. Lauren Mitchell, Hurricane Ruth, Samantha Fish, Rhiannon Giddens, and Southern Avenue take you to a different side of the blues - a side that's a little less male-centric and a little bit more from a woman's perspective. It's the twelfth anniversary of The Roadhouse, and I've got an hour full of upbeat show-opening tracks. Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Candye Kane, Victor Wainwright & The Wild Roots, Trudy Lynn, and R.J. Mischo are queued up to help propel us through a birthday hour. Sometimes it seems like thirty, but mostly the twelve years of The Roadhouse have gone by pretty quickly, as will this hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the twelfth anniversary Roadhouse.

But, the centerpiece of the hour is a tribute to Butch Trucks - a single track that I think really exemplifies the propulsive drummer that he was. It also helps to support the case that he was, simply, one of the greatest drummers of all time in one of the greatest bands of all time. The single word to describe this hour of The Roadhouse is "debut." I've got five artists in the hour who are making their Roadhouse debuts. And, it was extremely difficult to pull together the playlist because there were multiple tracks from those debut artists that I'd loved to have dropped in the show. Colin James, Rose City Kings, John Blues Boyd, The Jackson Whites, and the Jeremiah Johnson Band help fill the hour. After a few weeks away, it's good to be back to The Roadhouse Studios. Though I struggled a bit to put this one together, I think you'll find the outcome to be worth the struggle. Albert Castiglia, Big Jon Atkinson & Bob Corritore, Dave Muskett, Roddie Romero & The Hub City All-Stars, and Shaun Murphy are all part of the hour. I've got a feel for some West Coast blues. Of course, that West Coast sound is really almost a migratory blues sound - moving from Texas to the coast. So, there's some Texas in this edition, too. As we move into the spring new release cycle, I've got five artists in this edition making their debut in The Roadhouse. A rare intermittent Internet issue has left me tethered to my iPhone and pushed a new edition of The Roadhouse back to next week. There's a good variety of blues in the 312th Roadhouse, with a stronger-than-usual emphasis on Chicago blues. The hour features Luther Allison, Big Bill Morganfield, Smokey Wilson, Todd Wolfe Band, and a great live track to remember Gary Moore. This edition of The Roadhouse is unintentionally harp-heavy. The 535th Roadhouse is the first regular show in a few weeks and it's nice to be back. I've got lots of new music in the hour, most of which is less than 2 months old. Jackie Payne, Mr. Sipp, The Kentucky Headhunters with Johnnie Johnson, Ana & Milton Popovic, The Nighthawks - there are some real Roadhouse staples, and some artists who could easily be staples. As the seasons roll on, The Roadhouse rolls into another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This week in The Roadhouse, we fill the hour with a tribute to B.B. King. Few blues artists could pull of the broad range of blues styles he popularized over a 60-plus year career, and that range is on full display in the hour. Of course, it's impossible to honor "The King of the Blues" without including some of his most well-known tracks. Include those in a mix with other lesser-known songs and you'll find a full measure of the greatness of the late B.B. King in the 534th Roadhouse.

A Roadhouse Rewind from 2010 fills the hour this week. I'll be back next week with a new show, including a tribute to the late B.B. King. The mix in the 521st Roadhouse is definitely eclectic. The 411th Roadhouse is another hour of great voices, instruments, broad variety, musical themes. JJ Grey & Mofro, Kelly Joe Phelps, Ann Rabson with Bob Margolin, The Mojo Roots, and Dana Gillespie help make up the hour along with 7 or 8 other great blues artists and tracks - all in total, of course, strong enough to qualify as another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

I open 2013 with a look back at some of the great blues releases from 2012. I’ve got a pretty good mix of new artists and familiar artists with new music. Corey Lueck & The Smokewagon Blues Band, The Ben Miller Band, Altered Five, Lady Bianca, and Junior Watson set the tone for another new hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

This edition of The Roadhouse ends the year with a real party atmosphere. Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Mighty Sam McClain, and the South Austin Moonlighters light up our little juke joint. The variety of blues in this edition of The Roadhouse is like looking into a big valley of blues in all its hues and shades. Matt Woods & The Thunderbolts, Gary Clark, Jr, Guy Tortora, Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Samuel James help create the hour. This edition of The Roadhouse features new ways to look at the blues. The 402th edition of The Roadhouse lends itself well to high volume. Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones, Junior Kimbrough, Rick Holmstrom, Eric Bibb, and Alvin Lee make up a big chunk of the show, but there’s plenty of great blues in between those artists. This edition is a great mix of blues, with show debuts from three artists, some blues rock, a little classic blues, and surely something that will hit your tastes. The 400th Roadhouse jumps with an hour of jump and boogie blues. Louis Prima, Kid Ramos, Louis Jordan, Lavay Smith & Her Red-Hot Skillet Lickers, and Bullmoose Jackson take center stage on our little bandstand in the corner. The hour is pretty evenly divided between the jump and boogie pioneers and the relative new kids. The 386th Roadhouse is right on the beam with a focus on upbeat blues. The Mighty Mojo Prophets, Lavelle White, Kim Wilson, The Nighthawks, and Ronnie Baker Brooks will move you through the hour at aerobic pace. The heat in the Midwestern US is brutal, but heat in the blues is always welcome. The 385th Roadhouse is full of hot tracks with a nice cool acoustic break in the middle. It’s full summer in the US Northern Hemisphere, and full new release season. Artists get out and support those new releases in blues festivals throughout the summer, and this time of year just seems to ramp up the number of those releases. Ronnie Earl, Rick Estrin & The Nightcats, Seth Walker, Harmonica Hinds, and Johnnie Bassett make for a great hour to celebrate the season of festivals and fun. It’s the 383rd Roadhouse and it’s another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

It’s blues from the man-cave in the 382nd Roadhouse. The 44s, Malford Milligan Band, Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials, Joe Bonamassa, and Lazy Lester fill out the hour, with no female artists to be seen. Testosterone abounds in another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

The 381st Roadhouse started with a random track - one that seeded the rest of the show. Rockin’ Johnny Band, Daddy Mack Blues Band, James Kinds, Paul Thorn, and Treasa Levasseur follow that thread in this edition. It’s not the quickest way to build The Roadhouse, but the results will certainly keep you moving for another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

After a week of vacation, The Roadhouse roars back with a full show of new blues. Mississippi Shakedown, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Rory Block, and Albert Castiglia showcase the best new releases of the past few weeks, rollin’ and tumblin’ down the road to another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

On a US Memorial Day vacation weekend, I roll a Roadhouse Replay. Show 300 fills the hour with The Chris O’Leary Band, Mel Brown, Lance Lopez, Lucky Peterson, and Buddy Guy. It’s another hour of full-on chair-dancing and unquestionably another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

The 378th Roadhouse is an hour of blues that’ll roll right over you. Mighty Mojo Prophets, RJ Mischo, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Otis Taylor, and Etta Britt help keep us moving. As we’ve done for the past several years, we’re looking to some of the winners of the Blues Music Awards held in Memphis this week. Joe Bonamassa, Samantha Fish, Charlie Musselwhite, Ruthie Foster, and Eric Bibb are but a few of the winners who light up the 377th hour of The Roadhouse. The 376th Roadhouse is filled with music from all regions of the US - North, South, East, and Midwest. Hollywood Blue Flames, Mud Morganfield, Mannish Boys, Cash Box Kings, and Pinetop Perkins will put you in a chair-dancing mood. It’s another week of The Roadhouse, and, of course, another hour of great blues surprises. With more than 80% of the tracks in the hour ahead released in the past three months, you’d be hard pressed to find fresher blues anywhere else. Geoff Achison & The Souldiggers, Curtis Salgado, Matt Woods & The Thunderbolts, Walter Trout, and Oli Brown pave the road with blues of all styles and hues. The prominent sounds in this edition of The Roadhouse are from nearly opposite ends of the blues spectrum - blues rock and jump blues. The hour features Keb Mo’, Anthony Gomes, Julian Sas, Lance Lopez, and Big Pete, along with lots of new music. It’s the 373rd hour of The Roadhouse, and the 373rd hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

I’ve got a fair amount of new music in the 372nd Roadhouse, despite the fact that we seem to be in a bit of a lull week for new releases.Tail Dragger & Bob Corritore, Tab Benoit, Dr. John, Alyson “NightOwl” Shelton, and Curtis Salgado lead the way this week. We’ll range from New Orleans to LA to Phoenix looking for great artists to fill this hour. And fill it, they do. Harp, guitar, piano, and a musical shout-out from the cigar box nation make up the hour this week, and go a long ways toward making it another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

In this edition of The Roadhouse, we span the blues. Jon Lord Blues Project, B.B. King, Mary Flower, Eric Bibb, and Ghost Town Blues Band work the blues from one end to the other. The 370th Roadhouse starts rolling at the beginning and doesn’t stop until the hour is done. Mud Morganfield, Wentus Blues Band, Larry Garner, Kipori “Baby Wolf” Woods, and Chuck Leavell dish out tracks with legs that run on forever. The 369th Roadhouse full of great blues with a broad mix of new and old. Debbie Bond, Heritage Blues Orchestra, George “Harmonica” Smith, Erja Lyytinen, and James Booker fill the hour admirably, helping to assure another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

While I normally lean toward upbeat uptempo blues for The Roadhouse, sometimes you just have to slow it down a bit. Otis Taylor, Taj Mahal, Malford Milligan Band, Duke Robillard Jazz Trio, and Carolina Chocolate Drops mix up the tempos in the 368th Roadhouse. But while we slow it down, you can still feel free to crank it up for another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

The 367th Roadhouse is without an official frame. There’s such a variety that I’ve left it to you to decide how the music all fits together. Eddie C. Campbill, Janiva Magness, Big James & The Chicago Playboys, Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Nathan James & The Rhythm Scratchers lead this edition in fine style. Or - a fine variety of styles. But, as always, the varitey adds up to one full hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

This edition of The Roadhouse perpetuates the feeling that blues is truly good-time music. Albert Cummings, James Harman, The Sugar Prophets, Doug MacLeod, and Dion move us through the hour. It’s a full-on hour of guitar blues in the 365th Roadhouse. Freddie King, Mississippi John Hurt, Johnny Winter, Gary Moore, and Hound Dog Taylor show just how entrancing a mastery of wires and wood can be. From all over the map, all over the genre, and all over the hundred-year-plus timeline of the blues, it’s another hour of The Roadhouse.

The final edition of the sixth year of The Roadhouse is squarely in the now. Sistah Monica Parker, D’Mar & Chris Gill, Joel DaSilva & The Midnight Howl, Levee Town, and Grady Champion take the stage to lead us into a new Roadhouse year. The 360th Roadhouse is a bag of gems - little surprises and shining moments spread across an hour. Larry McCray, Ruthie Foster, Johnny Nicholas, Shemekia Copeland, and the Reba Russell Band provide some very nice moments in the hour. The 359th Roadhouse takes a little different turn, steering away from traditional blues with new blues sounds as the destination. Jason Ricci, Beverly McClellan, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Treasa Levasseur, and Nick Moss deliver that new sound in an interesting hour of our favorite musical genre. It’s another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard - The Roadhouse.

The final Roadhouse hour of 2011 is filled with smooth blues. Little Hurricane, Shaun Murphy, Big George Jackson, Carolina Chocolate Drops, and Etta James end the year in smooth style. This week, we pay respects to the artists who passed in 2011. It’s the final Christmas edition of The Roadhouse for 2011, with a holiday track in every set. I’ve also got music from the Blues Music Awards nominations list that was released this week. Big Pete, Mac Arnold’s Blues Revival, Johnny Rawls, Mary Flower, and Jackie Johnson lay down great blues around some great holiday blues tracks. The 355th Roadhouse takes on holiday blues in more ways than one. I include several blues Christmas tracks. And, we express our own holiday blues at the passing of Hubert Sumlin with a full Sumlin set. The 352nd Roadhouse contains a pile of blues. As always, that pile is comprised of new stuff and a pretty wide mix of music. J.C. Some of my favorite artists and tracks fill the hour in Roadhouse 343. It's an hour in Chicago with Walter Horton, Koko Taylor, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, J.B. Hutto, Hound Dog Taylor, and a full stage of other artists who helped make Chicago the home of the blues. In the midst of a summer heat wave in the Midwest, the 332nd Roadhouse delivers a big batch of hot blues. Though blues has made many migrations, few are quite as distinctive as the one that started primarily in Texas and ended up on the West Coast. That's where we're headed in the first 2011 edition of The Roadhouse. Tommy Castro, Pee Wee Crayton, Big Mama Thornton, Roy Hawkins, and Frank Goldwasser take the stage front and center. We're continuing the theme we started last week of looking back at the new blues releases from 2010. While Habitat for Humanity rehabs a house next door to The Little Blue House on the Wetlands, we spend an hour building a solid blues structure. We're in a festive mood in the 280th Roadhouse. I took the show on the road this week to the 26th annual IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival in Davenport, IA. Tight to the banks of the Mississippi, it's one of the longest-running and most well-respected festivals in the country. Bernard Allison, Ana Popovic, Billy Branch, Hubert Sumlin, and Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue fill the 280th Roadhouse with festival music. The 279th Roadhouse is a showcase edition for some fine young blues musicans. Heavy on guitar and bordering, at times, on rock, these artists reflect but a few of the new directions for blues in the next several years. Though I often mix blues styles in a show, I don’t often mix blues eras.
