The Raising Humans Kind Podcast is where Ashleigh, a Family Psychologist, shares what really matters when it comes to parenting young children. The more information we have about parenting, it seems the more we've lost our way. This podcast will guide you along your journey so that you can be confident you're focusing on what really counts.
012 | The case Against an Earlier Start to School
In this episode, Ashleigh discusses the growing trend of early academic learning and the implications it has on child development. She argues against the push for earlier schooling, emphasising the importance of play, attachment, and emotional readiness. Ashleigh highlights the economic motivations behind these educational policies and questions whether they truly serve the best interests of children. The conversation explores the challenges children face in early schooling environments and advocates for a more thoughtful approach to early childhood education.

Through personal stories of supporting her own kids, Ashleigh shares ways she has used books to support them to feel their vulnerable feelings and release their tears, moving around any walls of protection they had built and getting to the deeper feelings they were holding.

This podcast episode is all about what to reflect on when we have acted outdside of our value system. Often our unconscious fears and deeper desires are what are driving those reactions and becoming aware of those is such a powerful way to be able to address the issue at the core.

Today's episode is inspired by something I heard this week:
"How can I renegotiate my definition of success by how many times did I laugh today?"
This was shared by Blu (@blueofearth) and inspired me to share about how playful parenting runs much deeper than just gaining cooperation. It is our way of sending a message to our children that play is important, even in a society that doesn't value it.

Boundaries and Expectations around food - can it be done with respect?
In today's episode I open up the conversation about an alternative way to approaching food that is widely accepted within the respectful parenting community. I whole heartedly agree that we shouldn't resort back to counting bites and control around food but I do wonder if we've gone too far. This is a particularly important episode for those with a high value on physical health or those who are on a healing journey and need their children to have variety.
I address the following widely accepted ideas and share why I have NOT adopted these ideas in my home:
- It's best to avoid encouraging a child to eat particular foods
- It's important to be neutral in our explanation of all food
- If a child wants multiple serving of the one food then that should be made available to them
- Allowing children to have processed food early in life can prepare them for later in life when they have more access to it
My aim in this episode is not to tell you what to do, it is to encourage you to filter all ideas through your own value system and honour what lands and let go of the rest.
