10 years of Formula E - A retrospective (Part 1)
The first of a special two-part series looking back at a decade of Formula E focuses on the early years of the all-electric series and features current broadcaster Nicki Shields, former commentator Jack Nicholls, and 2019-20 champion Antonio Felix da Costa.
Sam Smith and Andre van de Burgt host over an hour of memories about how Formula E got together in the first place, how it almost died after three races and then boomed in the first five years of its existence.
Memories of the first season are majored on, as are some of the hair-raising moments from a championship that broke the mould to become one of the more successful sporting start-ups of the century so far.
Among the more amusing moments are recollections of Nick Heidfeld and Nico Prost’s infamous accident at the first race in Beijing and how da Costa almost left the nascent series before it had even started.

Our great big 2024 Formula E season review
It's season review time on this bumper episode of The Race Formula E Podcast as we look back at a wild 2024 campaign featuring eight different winners.
For host Andrew van de Burgt, The Race Formula E Correspondent Sam Smith and Formula E's lead commentator Tom Brooks, that means revisiting their forecasts from the start of campaign to reflect on just how accurately they predicted this most unpredictable of series.
That's followed by a team-by-team analysis, with a particular focus on Andretti's middling season after its drivers' title success with Jake Dennis in 2023, Oliver Rowland's Nissan heroics and the stark contrast with under-pressure team-mate Sacha Fenestraz's form, and whether Jaguar's teams' title was tinged at all by both its drivers' championship hopefuls being beaten to the crown by Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein.
And our review is rounded off with the panel's combined top 10 driver ranking, the contenders for surprise of the season, standout moment and more, plus the latest off-season developments in the Formula E paddock.

Pascal Wehrlein on claiming the world title in breathless London finale
Newly crowned Formula E World Champion Pascal Wehrlein joins Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to describe how he claimed the big prize and what it means to bring Porsche its first all-electric title in London.
Also joining the show is TAG-Heuer Porsche Formula E Teams director Florian Modlinger. He goes in to detail on how the title was won and what it means after a five year quest for glory.
The fall-out from the Jaguar strategy missteps are also analysed, along with the detail of how the Big Cat found itself in a complicated situation of celebrating the teams title but having to manage two disappointed and angry drivers in Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy.
Other stand-out performers like Oliver Rowland and Maximilian Guenther are also discussed in the finale which saw all manner of action, including a fraught weekend for out-going champion Jake Dennis.
The latest comings and goings in the driver market are also discussed, with Guenther and McLaren’s Jake Hughes at the centre of the intrigue.

Da Costa doubles up in Portland - can he now win the title?
The 2024 ABB FIA Formula E world championship title fight was blown wide open at the expansive Portland International Raceway as Antonio Felix da Costa scored a remarkable double for Porsche.
After scoring zero points in the first three races and having even his position in the Porsche team questioned, da Costa is now an outside bet to become a double Formula E champion in the most unlikely of scenarios.
But realistically it’s a scrap between Jaguar teammates Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, as well as da Costa’s teammate Pascal Wehrlein. Just 12 points separate them heading in to the final rounds at London ExCeL Arena in two week’s time.
Cassidy could and should have put the crown to bed in Portland but both Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt analyse how he managed to spin away his chances on the penultimate lap of Saturday’s race.
The controversial penalty that lost Mitch Evans the win is deep-dived in to, as is the performances of Sunday polesitter Jean-Eric Vergne, Abt miracle maker Nico Mueller and a rejuvenated Robin Frijns from Envision.

Formula E silly season special! Who drives where next season?
The Formula E driver market is ablaze, so we thought we’d get Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt to pour some sustainable fuel upon it for this special episode.
The futures of two former champions, Antonio Felix da Costa and Stoffel Vandoorne, are at the forefront of 'silly season' rumours with the former set to essentially dictate the market after a tumultuous second year with the German manufacturer.
Vandoorne’s recent talks with Envision are analysed, as is the possibility of Jake Hughes breaking free of NEOM McLaren and heading elsewhere.
Also, the possible end of Sebastien Buemi decade long Formula E career is discussed as the Swiss looks increasingly likely to be replaced by Vandoorne.
In addition to the merry-go-round, the new for 2024-25 calendar is also looked in to with Smith and van de Burgt pontificating over planned new races at Homestead and Chaing Mai, while a future for Formula E at Silverstone is also debated.

Shanghai EPrix: The title fight narrows
Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt are joined by motorsport writer and The Race contributor, Alice Holloway, as the business end of the 2024 Formula E season arrives, with talk of the title fight now being a straight scrap between Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy and Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.
But neither of them took the wins as the all-electric world championship returned to mainland China for the first time since 2015. It was their respective teammates Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix da Costa that triumphed after well-judged victories in more high-energy target races.
The future of da Costa and his at times fraught relationship with Porsche is discussed, as is the likelihood of Jake Dennis now not being able to defend his title and Nissan’s Oliver Rowland also losing ground to his rivals.
The trials and tribulations of Envision Racing are analysed, as is the future of Stoffel Vandoorne and the likelihood of Silverstone becoming the future home of a UK Formula E round.

Berlin EPrix: A tempestuous weekend at Tempelhof
The Race Formula E podcast takes an in-depth look in to a tempestuous weekend at Berlin Tempelhof where Nick Cassidy and Antonio Felix da Costa triumphed amid a hail of carbon shards and intra-team and manufacturer recriminations.
The Race team explain why the racing was so fraught and what the slow-build and then quick burst peloton style of racing means for Formula E’s future.
The bigger picture of what Cassidy’s bumper points haul means for the title race is also analysed, as is how his teammate Mitch Evans might be able to haul himself back in to contention after a tricky weekend in Germany.
Oliver Rowland’s continued impressive form is discussed alongside how it might be affecting his teammate Sacha Fenestraz.
A round up of the news includes a likely all-female test at Valencia in November and the latest possibilities for new venues in the much debated 2025 calendar.
Hosts Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt also pointlessly reminisce about the 1983 Long Beach Grand Prix, Jean-Pierre Jarier’s erratic form and why Smith randomly stole a packet of Haribo from a private jet.

Jaguar’s peerless 1-2 at Monaco is picked apart by Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt as the Big Cat captured only its second 1-2 in the all-electric world championship.

Misano EPrix review with Max Guenther
A typically action-packed Formula E weekend at the energy-bonkers Misano circuit in Italy is debated in this episode with special guest Maserati MSG’s Maximilian Guenther.
Oliver Rowland and Pascal Wehrlein were the victors but the biggest story of the weekend was Antonio Felix da Costa’s bizarre and petty disqualification and the furious exchanges between Porsche and the FIA
That is forensically analysed, as is the why Oliver Rowland ran out of energy while starting the last lap handing Wehrlein the win and the championship points lead.
Gunther details his races which involved a strong run to third on Saturday, a dust up with Mitch Evans, getting airborne via kerbs and then seeing another points finish on Sunday being taken away for an incident with Jean-Eric Vergne.
Hosts Andrew Van de Burgt and Sam Smith also take a wry-eye look at various other flashpoints, decipher the latest paddock news and indulge, for no particular reason at all, in reminiscing randomly about 1980s boxers and the long-forgotten Cagliari F3000 street race.

Also discussed is the catastrophic accident triggered by Sam Bird losing control of his Jaguar and the near misses that ensued, particularly for Antonio Felix da Costa, Edoardo Mortara and Bird himself.
The knock-on effect of that shunt also included some remarkable stories on how new monocoques were allocated throughout the paddock.
Fenestraz describes his pride in Nissan achieving its best result in almost two years, while the Franco-Argentinian also mulls over a promising yet ultimately difficult weekend in which his excellent Saturday qualifying essentially counted for nothing come the race.

Mitch Evans on Portland's pack-racing pandemonium
Mitch Evans joins Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt on the latest episode of The Race Formula E podcast looking back at the first ever Portland EPrix.
Evans goes over his incredible run from 20th to fourth position as he kept himself in the title frame with just four races of the 2023 season remaining.
He also describes what’s it like in the white heat of the 22 car peloton after Formula E’s most extreme energy-management race yet.
Nick Cassidy, who could become Evans’ teammate at Jaguar next season, clinched his third victory of the season, and his techniques of accomplishing perfectly executed victories is discussed.
Also on the discussion table is whether or not the style of this racing is attractive to fans, is Jake Dennis now the title favourite, were DS Penske cheating, Maserati and Nissan drivers colliding together and Nico Mueller’s huge car destroying shunt.

How Guenther delivered Maserati's first Formula E win
Maximilian Guenther and Pascal Wehrlein made Jakarta a German fiefdom last weekend as the Maserati MSG and Porsche drivers stole the show with a win apiece.
Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt decipher how they did it and how Guenther in particular dominated so many sessions and then the second race in the sultry Indonesian conditions.
Nick Cassidy’s messy weekend is also dissected, as is Mitch Evans’ herculean third place, which came just a day after he was drop-kicked out of contention by his own teammate Sam Bird, for a second time this season.
Jake Dennis’ recent form has looked ominous and with his happy hunting ground of the London ExCeL Arena track to come at the end of July, Sam and Andrew discuss whether or not this makes him the title favourite.
The recent departure of Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle is also mulled over as the all-electric world championship now enters a new epoch under the stewardship of new CEO, Jeff Dodds.

Jack and Andrew then dissect the rest of the action, including Nick Cassidy’s pair of impressive outings, ABT CUPRA’s shock front-row lockout, and Pascal Wehrlein’s dwindling championship lead.

Da Costa's magic move caps Cape Town epic
The first ever Cape Town EPrix was packed with incident, controversy and a move by Antonio Felix da Costa that will go down in championship legend. But how did he pull it off? He tells the Formula E podcast as Jack Nicholls, Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt ponder its magnificence in addition to several intricate storylines from a memorable weekend in South Africa.
Nick Cassidy’s contretemps with his former Super Formula sparring partner Sacha Fenestraz, the red flag debacle in qualifying that ended Sam Bird’s EPrix before it had even begun and a bizarre weekend for Cassidy’s teammate Sebastien Buemi are all covered off.
Our specialist Formula E trio also asked if Cape Town will become a staple of the calendar or if it will go the way of Montreal and Seoul as a spectacular one off.
In addition to da Costa we also hear from Buemi and also Maserati MSG’s team boss James Rossiter who will have to try and pick up his team after a disastrous start to its maiden Formula E campaign.

A hectic and entertaining first ever Hyderabad EPrix is digested and analysed by host Jack Nicholls, Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt.
Jean-Eric Vergne tore up the recent formbook by giving the new DS Penske alliance its maiden ever victory. But how did he do it?
The catastrophic intra-Jaguar debacle is picked apart, as is the complicated penalty that denied Sebastien Buemi a podium and elevated Antonio Felix da Costa to his first podium appearance for Porsche.
His teammate and championship points leader Pascal Wehrlein went from a hospital bed to fourth place all within 24 Hours and he talks to The Race about his rollercoaster of a few days in India.
Also appearing are Jaguar and Envision team bosses James Barclay and Sylvain Filippi as they react to how their events faired.

How Dennis and Porsche dominated the Gen 3 opener in Mexico
The Race’s first Formula E podcast of the 2023 season starts with a detailed look at the dawning of the new Gen3 era after a first public look at the much discussed cars in Mexico City.
Our new-old-new host Jack Nicholls presents the show gauging the opinions of The Race’s Sam Smith and Jack Cozens on how Jake Dennis and all things Porsche dominated the opening round at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
While Porsche made hay, Jaguar and DS relatively slumped, so the post mortem of why two of the pre-season favourites floundered is debated.
Also discussed is the overall impression that Gen3 made, the new attack mode structure and what the future holds for Formula E as it enters its third epoch.
The trio also look in to Robin Frijns’ injury and what it means for the new ABT Cupra team as it searches for a new driver to fill the void left by the Dutch ace.
There is also a look ahead to next weekend’s Diriyah EPrixs where the fast-tracked emergency braking solution is expected to debut on the new cars.

The great big season review episode - with Mercedes EQ's Gary Paffett
In a feature length season review episode The Race’s Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith and are joined by double DTM champion and now Mercedes EQ team manager Gary Paffett.
The victorious season for Mercedes and Stoffel Vandoorne gets the deep dive treatment as does the German manufacturers legacy in Formula E after leaving the all-electric series on a high.
The trio choose their top performing drivers of the season and mull over some excellent individual performances from Mitch Evans, Jake Dennis, Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein.
At the other end of the scale fans of Porsche and Antonio Giovinazzi should be advised of some stark appraisals after scrappy 2022 campaigns.
All this and extra amusement via Smith’s Seoul taxi debacle, VDB’s gripe over the difficulty in finding Formula E races to watch on TV in the first place and some smugness over pre-season predictions add to the 2022 valedictory feel.
As well as the old, the new striking Formula E design car is also discussed after a crucial recent test at Varano in Italy in addition to the latest driver market moves as Gen 2 morphs into Gen 3.

The Race Formula E podcast welcomes newly crowned ABB FIA Formula E World Champion Stoffel Vandoorne as he savours a hard-earned title sealed in Seoul last weekend.

Dennis excels in Docklands + Was London Formula E's best event yet?
London called, and Formula E answered in what is being considered as being one of the best events the all-electric world championship has put on in recent years.
Guest host Jack Nicholls is joined by Sam Smith and Avalanche Andretti’s Roger Griffiths, who with driver Jake Dennis was the toast of the UK’s capital last weekend after a dominant victory and a close second to Sunday victor Lucas di Grassi at the ExCeL centre circuit.
In a packed show the trio discuss the diminishing title fight after Stoffel Vandoorne again capitalised on reliability misfortune for Mitch Evans and incident packed races for both Edoardo Mortara and Jean-Eric Vergne.
There were plenty of afters too as Mercedes EQ got embroiled in an aborted choreography plan, while Sebastien Buemi and Pascal Wehrlein almost came to blows in the pit-lane and had to be separated by Griffiths’ commercial director and occasional columnist of The Race, Jim Wright!
In addition to the London action there is also a look ahead to Seoul and Griffiths reflections on Andretti’s BMW journey which has roots stretching all the way back to the start of Formula E.

Assessing New York’s rain chaos, controversy and Mitch Evans’ save of the season
Mitch Evans joins Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to pick the bones from a dramatic double-header in Brooklyn, New York City last weekend.
The Jaguar TCS Racing driver proffers his opinion on the controversial decision not to re-start the Saturday race after a localised cloudburst sent several cars, including the leader Nick Cassidy crashing off the track in a bizarre Takeshi’s Castle style ending to the race.
Evans kept himself in the title hunt with a third place in Sunday’s event but Jean-Eric Vergne’s non-score casts doubt on his credentials now of grabbing a third title.
The trio also look into the confusing penalty given to original Sunday pole-sitter Cassidy, the first win in 14 months for Antonio Felix da Costa and Evans’ energetic battle with Mercedes EQ’s Nyck de Vries.
A look in to whether this was the last New York City event is also discussed, as is the upcoming London EPrix at ExCeL Arena where several track changes should spice up the racing and the title fight.

Unpicking Mortara's Marrakesh masterclass with Mercedes EQ's Ian James
Who was flying on the Marrakesh Express and who was left to crumble like cous-cous in the searing heat of Morocco last weekend?
That and several other topics are discussed between host Andrew van de Burgt, The Race’s Formula E guru Sam Smith and special guest, Mercedes EQ team principal, Ian James in the latest episode of the Race’s Formula E podcast.
The intricate choreography of DS Techeetah pair Jean-Eric Vergne and Antonio Felix da Costa and how it allowed Edoardo Mortara the little extra breathing space he needed is mulled over, as is the chronic braking difficulties that blighted James’ charge Stoffel Vandoorne.
The trio also take a look at how the teammates of the ‘Gang of Four’ at the head of the drivers title fight will have a say in where the title rests in just over a month’s time when the world championship concludes in Seoul.
The seemingly never-ending saga of the 2022 driver silly season is picked apart, and the latest 2023 EPrix venue news is covered in the familiar ‘Sam’s calendar update’ segment of the show.

Monaco E-Prix review - Vandoorne victorious, but there’s beef at Venturi
A jam-packed post-Monaco E-Prix podcast dissects an intricately executed win for Stoffel Vandoorne and Mercedes EQ in addition to a host of other fine performances and spectacular incidents in the principality last weekend.
Former Audi Formula E team principal, Allan McNish joins Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to discuss how Vandoorne beat Mitch Evans' Jaguar and how Pascal Wehrlein was easily the unluckiest man in town.
Butchery puns abound after Edoardo Mortara’s now infamous description of team-mate Lucas di Grassi’s brawny racing left ROKiT Venturi embarrassed on their home turf. The Italo-Swiss ace didn’t mince his words after receiving a chop from Di Grassi causing his terminal puncture.
The unveiling of the all-new Gen 3 car is picked over, as is the latest calendar shenanigans – a regular feature of the Formula E podcast.
Also discussed in detail is Stoffel Vandoorne’s soon to be confirmed move from Mercedes EQ to the new DS Penske alliance in what is sure to be one of the strongest ever partnerships seen in the all-electric world championship.

Rome E-Prix review + Is the Formula E penalty system fair?
An excellent weekend of Formula E action in Rome is picked over by The Race’s Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt, who are joined by motorsport industry veteran Jim Wright.
Wright is currently the commercial director for the Andretti motorsport group and had previously filled similar roles at the Williams F1 team and the Venturi and Mahindra Formula E organisations.
He's probed on the weekend's action, including his reaction to a pair of wins for Mitch Evans, his thoughts on the new qualifying format, and which drivers he thinks may or may not be attractive in the Gen-3 era of Formula E.
Also discussed is Sam Bird’s three-place grid drop for Monaco, which expands into a more existential discussion about whether the penalty structure is right in international racing at all. And there's also a deep dive into Oliver Turvey’s remarkable run from 22nd to 7th, plus reaction to Jean-Eric Vergne's extraordinary radio antics in Sunday’s race.
