I love to eat a piece of cheese in the middle of the night while watching sports with the guys or sleeping past midnight every single night. Knowing your spouse’s password can be a double edged sword. It gives you a silent power and access to your significant others private information, but it can also divide and cause friction when this power is abused. In our marriage, Abel and I have each other’s passwords. We have nothing to hide from one another, however, at one point in our relationship I was obsessed with checking Abel’s accounts. Abel loves YouTube! And he loves it even more because it’s helping him with our kids. I on the other hand am very leery about how much YouTube is too much YouTube. I married Abel for his heart and his amazing voice, NOT his jokes. Abel thinks he is a comedian and sometimes puts his foot in his mouth. I will admit my jokes sometimes get out of hand too. In an effort to try and make each other laugh we accidentally hurt each other which quickly escalates into a fight. With the ever-increasing numbers in divorce there is also an increase in blended families. When Abel and I got married, my eldest daughter was 8 years old. She was upset with the marriage because she wanted her parents back together. How do you deal with your childs rejection of your new relationship? Abel fortunately understood my daughter. He himself had come from a single parent home and could relate with what she was going through. As the years have passed we have managed to develop a healthy family relationship, but through the process there was a lot of work, effort and tears. Join us as Abel as he describes what he did to win over my daughter in an effort that was truly a labor of love. When I first told my sister that I liked Abel she said I was ridiculous, not because he was a bad guy but because he was 10 years younger than I. My father Don Pedro Rivera engraved in my heart that “family is the only thing you have at the end of the day”, and I agree with him. I firmly believe that I have nothing without my family. Once married to Abel, I couldn’t leave my strong family ties behind. Should I have to? Couldn’t Abel be an extension of my Rivera family? In honor of Mother’s Day, Abel and I sat down and had a candid conversation with my mother Rosa Amelia Rivera Saavedra.
