Noisemakers February 2019
It’s February and with Noise Pop Festival and SXSW on the horizon, we have a sneaking suspicion you’re pining for the best new releases that’ll feed your senses well into the year. This is why we’re here and the Noise Pop Podcast team raises you a world premiere from SF’s own Mikos Da Gawd from his debut album, ‘Hell Yeah Brother,’out March 4 on Text Me Records. You’ll hear Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s resurgent jazz sound; tribal-drum laden with warbles of brass and deliberate vocals from Saul Williams as well as the choice coupling of trenchantly lovelorn singer-songwriters Julia Jacklin and Faye Webster. We won’t steal production trio Planet Giza’s shine—but their latest track glows. Plus Helado Negro’s quietly ambrosial grooves and Mahawam’s mercurial electro hip-hop round out an exciting February slate. Press play.

New Albums for 2019
Ahhh.. 2019 is here, which means it’s time for a fresh start, new experiences, and of course, looking ahead to a busy year of much-anticipated music. To kick things off, Berkeley-based Toro y Moi turn over a new leaf, breaking away from their pioneering hazy chillwave sound to lift our spirits with Outer Peace’s revitalized dance-driven jams. Sir Babygirl’s debut, Crush on Me, drowns us in a chaotic, cotton-candy infused Nickelodeon pop dream as she wails about euphoric infatuation and aching heartbreak (fittingly, it’ll be released the day after Valentine’s Day.) And DC’s Priests are back with the sinister, alluring prowl of The Seduction of Kansas that will surely leave you craving for more. Let’s dig in.

Best Albums of 2018
The end of the year is no doubt a time for rumination on the songs that spoke to us and speculating on which artists will continue to make an impact. In this episode, we bring closure by highlighting the best albums and songs of 2018; the soundtracks that manifested our own experiences. The year taught us to look inwardly, as in Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Doubt,” in which she contemplates leaving behind her vices. Love, she comes to realize, is one of them. Empathetically, Amen Dunes considers mythical heroism and the contradictions of the people we admire in “Miki Dora.” And the dashingly brazen “ Pearly Gates” by U.S. Girls evokes the macro message that the ostensibly pleasurable is the political. We won’t spoil the rest—2018: let’s wrap it up. Episode playlist: 1. Charlotte Day Wilson - “Doubt” from Stone Woman 2. Kaia Kater - “Grenades” from Grenades 3. Amen Dunes - “Miki Dora” from Freedom 4. U.S. Girls - “Pearly Gates” from In A Poem Unlimited 5. Lucy Dacus - “Yours & Mine” from Historian 6. DJ Koze - “Illumination” (feat. Róisín Murphy) from knock knock 7. Janelle Monáe - “Crazy, Classic, Life” from Dirty Computer

Best of the Bay 2018
Before we recap our top albums of the year from all over the map, it’s time to stay true to our roots and spread the wealth of the Bay-Area artists that made 2018 memorable. We’re hooked on Tune-Yards’ eclectic patchwork of vocal loops with a piercing message. The easygoing, hypnotic croons and jangly guitars of Spooky Mansion have us feeling nostalgic for that Indian Summer unique to SF. Then there’s the late-blooming self-discovery mixed with jazzy, ethereal rhythm in the latest from astronauts, etc. We’ve also sprinkled in some of that new-new Rexx Life Raj featuring E40. Plus more we know you’ll really dig, no matter where you are. Episode playlist: 1. ODIE - “Noise” 2. Zola - “Blood/Sugar” 3. Same Girls - “Inner Space” 4. Two Years Later: A Look At Whether Gender Parity Has Improved at Music Festivals

Also joining the show, is University of Chicago Data Scientist Rob Mitchum, whose festival gender balance-tracking data visualizations have appeared in Pitchfork for the past two years.

Musical Beefs
Musicians are a passionate bunch, they love hard and can, arguably, hate even harder. Sometimes that hatred is directed at fellow musicians with the end result being uncomfortable tabloid fuel. This episode of the Noise Pop Podcast covers those musical beefs and the culture that surrounds them. From the recent Mark Kozelek and War On Drugs scuffle, to the well-documented rivalry between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, this podcast covers the gamut of feuding musicians. Enjoy

The Best Instrumental Songs
Who needs lyrics? There are so many great songs that kill the vocals and let the rest of the band do the talking. This episode celebrates some of the best instrumental songs in rock, pop, and electronic. The one rule we applied to this is that the artist has to historically be a vocal-fronted band (i.e. no Dick Dale, Explosions in The Sky, Budos Band, etc…). So, enjoy! We’ll leave you with the immortal lyrics of a saccharine late 80’s country hit “...you say it best, when you say nothing at all”

Indie Music + Musical Theory
We know major chords make us feel happy, and minor chords make us feel sad. But beyond that, there is so much more to the composition of a song; it's a careful construction that can conjure up a variety of emotions, from anxiety to exuberance. So this episode, we're diving into the theory behind the songs we love and finding out what makes them so good from a technical perspective.
We decided to do this topic after reading the following articles about music criticism and composition. Check them out:
Daily Beast article chastising the nature of music criticism

Indie Approved Pop II
Before the Internet changed everything there were two distinct and opposing types of popular music, Indie and mainstream. It was the head versus the heart, the cool kids versus the pop kids and you had to come down on one side or the other. But the lines have been blurring over the past decade and those sides don't mean much any more. We now live in a world where pop music is so strange and creative that it's found acceptance with rock critics and indie snobs. Listen as we explore the genre-transcending melodies of Justin Timberlake, the indie-friendly quirkiness of Solange, (sister of mega pop star Beyonce) and the possibly ironic but ultimate acceptance of Hall and Oates. Track List:1. "#Beautiful" - Miguel and Mariah Carey, The Art of Letting Go2. "Take Back The Night" -- Justin Timberlake, The 20/20 Experience3. "Hey Love" -- Quadron, Avalanche4. Six Degrees of Kevin Barnes
Alright fellow music nerds (and expert Googlers), this episode is for you. The Noise Pop Team has decided to test your music knowledge by playing a game based loosely on Six Degrees of Separation, or Kevin Bacon. It goes a little something like this: there are eight tracks in this playlist and each one is connected to the previous one, identify the tracks and the seven connections in between each song and you could win! Put your answers in the comments below this episode on KQED.org/NoisePop, and the first person to identify them all or the person who gets the most correct will win select Noise Pop merchandise. Good luck!

There are several ways to define a song as a great summer song: it can be carefree, sweet, propulsive, lazy, emotional, detached, it can be anything really. The following list of songs are what defined summer for many of us and based on the quality of the list it's clearly been a good year for music. So enjoy! Indie Approved Pop
We know you're out there. In public, you're proudly listening to the latest in indie obscurity. But every now and then, when no one is looking, you're singing along (and maybe dancing a little) to those ubiquitous earworms known as pop songs. Maybe they're your guilty pleasure, or maybe you admire the production and songwriting, or maybe they're just the tune you have stuck in your head even though you've never listened to the song on purpose. Either way, in this week's episode, we're taking a break from the best in indie and indulging in our latent pop tendencies. But don't worry, we haven't completely jumped the indie ship. We've curated a list of indie-approved pop tunes - songs that, in one way or another, have been created, covered, or just embraced by the indie community. Some of these tracks are discussed and analyzed, but others are just pure indulgence, because let's face it -- sometimes, we all just need to hear some Beyonce.
Tracklist:
1. "Dancing On My Own" -- Robyn, Body Talk Pt. 12. "Lovestoned" -- Justin Timberlake, FutureSex/LoveSounds3. "Climax" -- Usher, Looking For Myself4. "Boyfriend" -- Justin Bieber, Believe5. Tracing The Noise Pop Sound
A few weeks ago, NPR asked us to come up with a list of definitive Noise Pop (the genre) songs for their website, NPR.org. It was a tall order and a fascinating challenge for us, and of course, we eagerly accepted. With tunes from the early '70s to modern songs released just a few months ago on our radar, we studiously dove into the decades to find the top 100. We sorted them chronologically in order to to show the evolution of the sound. The full list will post on NPR later this month, but for now we've assembled a teaser podcast episode that chronicles the genre's migration over the past 4 decades. Enjoy this sampler platter and stay tuned for the announcement of the full list coming soon.

Coachella 2013 Predictions
There is an unofficial game music nerds play online; it's silly, it's futile and it is incredibly addictive, it's 'guess the festival lineup'. Music fans spend hours researching what bands are likely to play what festival and they share their predictions online where they argue endlessly about it. The best predictions are usually based on record release dates, tour schedules, the last time a band played a certain festival, what kind of sound they a band is, etc...
All festivals get this treatment, but no festival is obsessed over quite as much as Coachella. It's the white whale of lineup predictions and it seems to start earlier each year. So, with this year's festival coming to a close we decided it would be novel to take the first known stab at next year's festival lineup. We brirefly discuss this year's artists and then dive right into our logical choices for 2013. Of course, nothing is confirmed, these are merely guesses, but as you'll hear it's a hell of a lot of fun to play this guessing game.

Video: Shannon & The Clams
This podcast is brought to you by KQED.org
The Noise Pop Podcast is proud to present a video collaboration with the the music website and video series Echolocale. These fine folks have an uncanny knack for capturing intimate and visually stunning performances from some of today's most groundbreaking artists. In this video Shannon and The Clams perform their song "Done With You" in one of the most surreal settings imaginable, Cakeland, a store front and art installation from Oakland artist Scott Hove. The room's playful yet dark aesthetic works perfectly with the bands paradoxical blend of doo-wop innocence and garage rock darkness. Enjoy the video and be sure to visit www.echolocale.com for more

Record Labels
Labels. You’ve heard their names before - Barsuck, Matador, DFA – but do you actually know what they do? This week the Noise Pop Podcast is here to edify on exactly who these labels are and why they exist. They start from the indie beginnings and over the course of the episode walk through what these labels now mean to music. Helping them along the way are Sonya Kolowrat from Beggars, Mona Dehghan from Domino, Tyler Stover from Lefse, Paul Hanly of Frenchkiss and Jamie Farkas of Vice. They all offer insights and anecdotes on how their labels operate. Sticking with the theme the gang each picks their favorite labels for their Ear About Town segment. On a sad note (depending on you feelings towards his smug voice), this is Jesse’s last episode as a weekly guest to the podcast, follow him on twitter @foxconsox. On a happier note, we have a new guest, Olivia LaRoche. You'll like her, she is awesome! Leave your Ear About Town (a musical conversation piece) on our machine 585-4NOISE5 / (585) 466-4735

Covers
This week’s entry was inspired by a covers infused dinner Noise Pop is putting on with local SF supper club graffEats. The chef is going to prepare dishes that are covers of famous chef's dishes, with which Noise Pop will pair cover songs. So every song in this episode is a cover. Taking it a step further Dawson and the team explore the different ways a cover can be done. To gain some insight Jesse and Dawson speak with Josh Modell, A.V. Club’s Editor-in-Chief, about his fantastic Undercover series. With some help from Josh, the gang focuses on the recent past and finds covers of artists all over the spectrum from Joanna Newsom to Kermit the Frog. R&B Indie Music
This week the NPP team tackles the new trend of popular R&B taking root in indie music. With new artists like The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and How To Dress Well, it's clear that 90's R&B is making a comeback. This episode explores how it got to this point. The first clue started a few years ago when contemporary bands began covering R&B hits from the 90's - in 2009 The xx covered Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Shortly after, the influence of this sound grew apparent in new indie bands like Gayngs and James Blake. Dirty Projector’s smash “Stillness in the Move” was a watershed moment, in which a pure R&B vocal was paired with the bands traditionally challenging sound. Now the stage is set for not just artists dabbling in an R&B sound but actual pure R&B artist to be embraced by the independent community, a fascinating and rewarding new trend in music.
The group also announce the winning name of their recommendation segment, “Ear About Town.” This episode’s segment Jesse, Jaime and Dawson stay with the theme and share their respective favorite R&B song from the 1990’s.
1. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” – The Weeknd, House of Balloons
2. “Transparency” – d’Eon, Darkbloom
3. “Are You That Somebody?” (clip) – Aaliyah, Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack

5. “Don’t Take it Personal” Monica Cover - White Hinterland, single
6. “Gaudy Side of Town” – Gayngs, Relayted

8. “Stillness is the Move” (clip) – Solange, single
9. “Songs for Women” - Frank Ocean, Nostalgia/Ultra
10. “Wicked Games” - The Weeknd, House of Balloons
