One Year of Genocide: Diana Buttu on Israel’s Brutality and the Fight for Justice

Today’s episode was recorded just before the one-year anniversary of October 7th, the date marking the beginning of the most recent iteration of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza. Unfortunately, we missed the release date, but we still felt it was crucial to share this conversation as events continue to unfold. Since the recording, Israel has not only continued its brutal assault on Gaza but has also intensified its aggression in Lebanon, with hundreds killed and over a million people displaced as Israel prepares for a ground invasion. In this episode, I speak with Diana Buttu, who offers a powerful analysis of Israel’s colonial expansionist project, its use of propaganda, and its deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians. Buttu also discusses the international community's inaction, particularly the U.S.'s role in enabling Israel's violence, and reflects on the sense of isolation and hopelessness felt by many Palestinians. She provides a deep dive into the internal dynamics of Israeli society, which supports and justifies these actions while offering little accountability for atrocities committed. Despite the devastating realities, Diana shares her thoughts on the importance of global solidarity and the hope for justice in the future. Israel and Iran: Unpacking Western Media Bias

In the past few weeks, Israel has bombed Lebanon, assassinated Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, launched a ground invasion, and displaced over a million people. Health care workers are warning of an 'apocalyptic' situation, with many now sleeping on the streets of Beirut. More than 1,300 have been killed, including at least one Lebanese American citizen. Meanwhile, Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza and carry out military invasions in the occupied West Bank. On Tuesday, Iran launched over 100 missiles at Israel, targeting military sites in retaliation for Israel’s killings of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. We're joined by Assal Raad. Assal specializes in research and writing on Iran policy and U.S.-Iran relations. Her work has appeared in Newsweek, The National Interest, The Independent, Foreign Policy, and more. She’s been a commentator on BBC World, Al Jazeera, NPR, and others. She holds a PhD in Middle Eastern History from the University of California, Irvine, and is the author of The State of Resistance: Politics, Culture, and Identity in Modern Iran.   - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. From Beirut to Gaza: The Ripple Effects of Israel’s Attack on Lebanon

In just a week, Israel's brutal bombing campaign on Lebanon has killed more than 700 Lebanese people and displaced over 90,000, escalating tensions with Hezbollah and pushing the conflict closer to what some believe is already an all-out war. This comes on the heels of the recent 'pager attack,' where hundreds of personal electronic devices were booby-trapped by Israel, resulting in the deaths and injuries of thousands across the country. Today, I’m joined by Abboud Hamayel – a writer, analyst, and lecturer in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Birzeit University. We'll be discussing the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the potential implications for the region, and how these developments impact Gaza.   - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 85. Polio and The Public Health Crisis in Gaza

In mid-July, reports began to emerge from the Gaza Strip that polio was detected in the water. Days later, the Gaza Ministry of Health declared a polio epidemic and called for “immediate intervention to end the [Israeli] aggression and find radical solutions” to the worsening public health crisis in the Strip. The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was sending more than one million polio vaccines to Gaza to be administered over the coming weeks to prevent children from being infected. But whether Israel would open up the borders to allow the vaccines in remains to be seen. In this episode, host Yumna Patel speaks with Yara Asi, a Palestinian public health expert, about the consequences this latest development could have for public health in Gaza and the world, where most strains of the polio virus have effectively been eradicated. Yara M. Asi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida in the School of Global Health Management and Informatics and Co-Director of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights. Her work has been featured in peer-reviewed journals, The New York Times, The Nation, The Washington Post, and other outlets. She is the author of How War Kills: The Overlooked Threats to our Health (2024). - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 82. ICJ says Israel’s occupation is illegal

On July 19, the International Court of Justice, or ICJ, ruled that Israel’s occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem is illegal and must end immediately. Palestinians, of course, have been saying this for years. The court stated that Israel must halt all new settlement construction, evacuate settlers, and pay reparations to Palestinians, calling some of Israel’s policies “apartheid.” This advisory opinion, requested by the United Nations, marks a significant condemnation of Israel’s legal defenses. The ruling emphasizes the occupation’s illegality and highlights the need for international accountability and policy shifts. This historic ruling, though non-binding, challenges Israel’s legal defenses for the first time. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas celebrated the decision as a victory for justice, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed it calling it “absurd.” The United States responded by affirming only that Israel’s settlements are illegal and criticized “the breadth of the court’s opinion,” which, it said, “will complicate efforts to resolve the conflict.” We are joined today by Craig Mokhiber, an international human rights lawyer and activist, and a former senior United Nations human rights official. Craig served at the U.N. for over three decades, with postings in Switzerland, Palestine, Afghanistan, and New York, conducting numerous human rights missions across various continents. In October 2023, he left the U.N., criticizing the organization’s human rights failures regarding Israel’s actions to Gaza, warning of genocide in Gaza, and calling for a new approach to Palestine and Israel based on international law, human rights, and equality. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 81. AIPAC is spending big to beat Cori Bush

Last month, pro-Israel centrist George Latimer beat Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic primary for New York’s 16th district. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent $15 million to help secure Latimer’s victory and now they have their sights set on Missouri’s 1st district, where Rep. Cori Bush is facing a primary challenge from prosecutor Wesley Bell. Bush advocated for Palestinian rights on the campaign trail in 2020, and she’s been strong on the issue as a House member, making her a consistent target of Israel lobbying groups. Mondoweiss's U.S. correspondent Michael Arria spoke to JVP Action Political Director Beth Miller on Bush’s record, Bell’s politics, and how much AIPAC is spending on the race. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 80. Progressive Congressmember Jamaal Bowman loses primary to AIPAC-backed candidate

Yesterday Jamaal Bowman, a member of the so-called Squad of progressive politicians in the U.S. House of Representatives, lost his hotly contested primary election in New York’s 16th District.   This primary race between him and George Latimer broke records as the most expensive primary race for the House of Representatives in U.S. history. Political action committees affiliated with AIPAC, the American Israel Political Affairs Committee, poured over $15 million dollars into the race to boost Latimer’s campaign.   AIPAC and its affiliated groups pledged to spend $100 million during the 2024 election cycle to promote pro-Israel candidates. I spoke to Michael Arria today about the impact of Bowman’s loss and whether AIPAC is really as influential as it claims to be. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 79. Progressive organizations launch Reject AIPAC to counter the pro-Israel lobby

AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is on its way to spending over $100 million this election cycle as it looks to punish candidates critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. Earlier this year a coalition of nearly two dozen progressive groups – including Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and the Sunrise Movement – launched Reject AIPAC, an organization aimed at combatting the pro-Israel lobbying group. Mondoweiss’s U.S. correspondent Michael Arria interviewed Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi about the coalition, AIPAC's election strategy, and two of the biggest primary fights of the summer. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Massive airstrikes hit the camp just as the Israeli military staged a raid on homes inside the camp where Israeli captives were being held. Four captives were recovered alive while over 270 Palestinians were killed and as many as a thousand were wounded. Mondoweiss’s Managing Editor, Faris Giacaman, speaks to Abdaljawad Omar about his article, “The Question of Hamas and the Left.” In it, Omar argues that Leftist critics in the West of Hamas fail to understand the complexity of Palestinian politics and resistance. 76. ICC arrest warrants sought for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant

On May 20, the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, filed arrest warrant applications for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three senior Hamas leaders. Mondoweiss correspondent David Kattenburg called the charges against the Israeli leaders a "bombshell." Khan said the two men "bear criminal responsibility" for a host of war crimes and crimes against humanity including: starvation of Gazan civilians as a method of warfare, wilfully causing great suffering or serious injury in the besieged enclave, wilful killing or murder, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, extermination by starvation, and persecution and other “inhumane acts” committed from at least October 8. All of these crimes form part of a "widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population pursuant to State policy." In this episode, Yumna Patel speaks with Hassan Ben Imran, a member of the Governing Council of Law for Palestine, about Palestinians' long effort to access international legal institutions and the impact of this development. Later, I speak to Spencer Ackerman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign policy columnist for The Nation, about how these indictments deepen the crisis of international order. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 75. Hundreds of Palestinian bodies recovered from mass graves in Gaza

Hundreds of dead bodies were found at the Nasser Hospital’s surroundings in Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Civil Defense said on Thursday. The Civil Defense announced in a press conference that since Wednesday alone, 392 bodies had been found in mass graves, many of whom had been identified as missing for weeks, while 58% of the bodies haven’t been identified. Muhammad al-Mughayyir, director of the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza, said that some 20 bodies were buried while medical and medication tubes were still connected to their bodies, suggesting that they might have been buried alive. Al-Mughayyir added that the bodies showed signs of torture. 74. Students protest Israel's genocidal war

Student protests over Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza are spreading across the United States and around the world. Students at Columbia University in New York setup a protest encampment last week on the New York campus. In response, the university’s President, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, called in the New York Police Department and arrested several student organizers. These students were then banned from campus and may face expulsion. If the goal was to quickly end the protest, this completely backfired on the university administration. Thousands of students, joined by faculty and staff from across the university, re-established the protest camp almost immediately. Other universities around the United States have seen solidarity camps erected and administration buildings occupied. Now, students around the world are joining the movement. Michael Arria and I spoke to one of the student organizers from Columbia who was arrested and banned from campus. Maryam Iqbal spoke to us on Tuesday. 73. Eyewitness accounts from al-Shifa Hospital

When the Israeli military left the al-Shifa Hospital complex earlier this month, Gaza’s largest medical facility was left in ruins. International medical and aid groups declared it completely destroyed and totally non-operational. Shortly after, stories began to emerge of the horrors those inside the facility experienced at the hands of the Israeli military. Tareq Hajjaj, our Gaza Correspondent, collected eyewitness accounts of the deadly siege. He joined Yumna Patel, our Palestine News Director, to discuss the al-Shifa Hospital, as well as his reporting on what Palestinians are finding when they venture back to Gaza’s central and northern areas. 71. How Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah has been changed by the Gaza genocide

Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah was among the last group of people to enter Gaza through Egypt on the morning of Monday, October 9, immediately before the Rafah crossing was shut down and the territory was sealed off from the world.   He started operating at al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s medical epicenter, as soon as he’d arranged safe passage to the medical complex. Within the first few days, as a result of a relentless, ruthless bombing campaign against Gaza’s civilian infrastructure and people, the wounded had exceeded the entire Strip’s total bed capacity of 2,500.   He told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on October 12, 2023, that basic medical equipment was unavailable mere days into the assault. He warned of the far-ranging, catastrophic consequences of this war against the people of Gaza, “a man-made catastrophe,” he said, “almost like a perfect storm,” as Gaza’s healthcare system was “already on its knees” thanks to fifteen years of Israeli siege.   Abu-Sittah was working at Al-Ahli Hospital during the massacre on October 17, 2023, and was among the physicians who testified, surrounded by a sea of blanket-shrouded bodies, in the hospital courtyard in the attack’s immediate aftermath.   Since leaving Gaza in November, Abu-Sittah has committed his days to fighting what he called the “killing machine masquerading as a state” set on extinguishing life in Gaza. Recently, he launched the Ghassan Abu-Sittah Children’s Fund to bring injured children from Gaza to Lebanon to receive holistic medical and psychosocial care.   Mary Turfah, a writer and medical student, spoke to Dr. Abu Sittah on February 20. They talked about the liberatory potential of medicine and the complicity of Western media in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.   They discussed Zionism and what to make of a settler colonial ideology that has flung itself over the precipice of genocide, necropolitics, and the obligation, when confronted with the cold, monstrous logic of elimination, to remain unwavering in our commitment to life. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 70. U.N. experts say “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza

In mid-December 2023, two and a half months into Israel’s war on Gaza, a UN-affiliated committee of famine experts reported that over half a million Gazans faced catastrophic hunger, all 2.3 million were in crisis, and the situation was “deteriorating rapidly.”   On the eve of the Famine Review Committee’s follow-up assessment, forced starvation in Gaza is getting worse, fast.   In a March 5 statement, seven UN experts declared that “Israel has been intentionally starving” Gaza and that “widespread famine” in the besieged, brutalized enclave is “imminent.”   According to Gaza health officials and a “senior doctor,” cited on March 8 by the Associated Press, at least 20 people have died from dehydration and malnutrition at north Gaza’s Kamal Adwan and al-Shifa hospitals, and sixteen premature babies have succumbed to “malnutrition-related” disorders at Rafah’s Emirati Hospital.   On March 10, Al Jazeera reported 25 “known starvation deaths” in northern Gaza.   David Kattenburg spoke with the first author of the statement, Michael Fakhri, Special UN Rapporteur on the right to food. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 69. Girl Scouts tells troop to shut down Gaza fundraiser

A Girl Scout Troop in Missouri recently broke away from the organization after it made legal threats against the group.   For the Girl Scout's “Agents of Change” capstone project, a St. Louis county troop decided to make and sell bracelets to raise money for children in Gaza.   The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri said the move was “political" and instructed them to shut down the fundraiser.   The children in this particular troop were inspired by other troops that raised money for war victims in Ukraine. Those troops faced no repercussions over their fundraisers.   Despite breaking away from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, the group is staying together, and their bracelet campaign has continued.   Mondoweiss’s U.S. Correspondent Michael Arria spoke with Girl Scout Troop Leader and mother to one of the scouts, Nawal Abuhamdeh, and two of the Girl Scouts about the situation. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 68. Noura Erakat on the collective trauma of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza

Last month, Frank Barat spoke with Noura Erakat on our new YouTube show, Witnessing Palestine. As we recorded that program, Gaza had been under Israeli bombardment from the air, land, and sea for 70 days.   At that time, 18,000 Palestinians in Gaza were known to have been killed by the Israeli military. Today, that number is over 28,000. More than 68,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been wounded. The Israeli military continues to invade Palestinian cities and villages in the West Bank. Violent attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers also continue.   Noura joined Frank to discuss the collective trauma of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza and where the global movement for Palestinian freedom goes from here.   Noura is a human rights attorney and an Associate Professor at Rutgers University in the Department of Africana Studies and the Program in Criminal Justice. She is an editorial committee member of the Journal for Palestine Studies and a co-Founding Editor of Jadaliyya. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 67. Diana Buttu on watching the Gaza genocide on our mobile phones

In this episode, Mondoweiss’s Yumna Patel speaks with Palestinian lawyer and political analyst Diana Buttu about the genocide in Gaza and the role social media is playing in how it unfolds. Israeli soldiers on the ground in Gaza are undermining Israel’s carefully crafted public image as a victim through their social media posts, which show them joking, laughing, and committing what many legal observers believe are war crimes. This second Nakba is being live-streamed in real-time, and Yumna and Diana discuss the experience Palestinians are sharing of watching a genocide of their people play out on their mobile phones. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 65. Ryan Grim on The Squad vs. the Israel Lobby and Students for Justice In Palestine vs. Columbia University

In this episode, we have two interviews with our U.S. Correspondent, Michael Arria. First, Michael talks to Ryan Grim, Washington D.C. Bureau chief for The Intercept. Ryan has a new book out titled, “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution.” In it, he reports on the fight between the squad of progressive Democrats first elected to Congress in 2018 and Israel lobby organizations AIPAC and Democratic Majority for Israel. Later, we’ll hear from a student organizer at Columbia University about the school's suspension of pro-Palestine groups on campus. In recent weeks, we've seen a disturbing wave of McCarthyism target Palestine activism across college campuses. A number of Students for Justice in Palestine chapters have been suspended or even banned at schools. One of the schools is Columbia University, which also suspended its Jewish Voice for Peace chapter. Michael spoke with a member of Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine about these developments. She is also a member of Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a coalition that has been relaunched in response to the suspensions. She asked Mondoweiss to withhold her name. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 64. Katie Halper: Why Jews should support Palestine, lessons from the holocaust, and a message to Amy Schumer

The so-called "humanitarian pause" in Israel's assault on Gaza ended just days ago, and already nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed. The Israeli military released a map dividing Gaza into over 2,000 small sections. They say they will notify Palestinians in each of these sections when they plan to bomb or invade it so that the Palestinians can move to a different section. People have compared this to the Hunger Games or similar dystopian stories. As a result, Palestinians in Gaza continue to be squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces with nowhere to go and not nearly enough food, medicine, and fuel entering the area to sustain human life. The international community continues to wring its hands without doing anything to stop Israel. In fact, led by the Biden administration in the United States, most of the Western nations continue to stand firmly behind Israel. Biden wants to lift the few small restrictions on arms transfers that do exist between the United States and Israel so that, presumably, the Israeli military can increase its attacks on Gaza. Because of his blanket support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, Joe Biden's approval ratings continue to sink lower with the exact voting blocks he will need in the upcoming presidential election, an election, we are told, that will determine whether U.S. democracy will even exist anymore. However dark this moment may seem, we can take heart that the mass protests sparked by Israel's brutality are continuing unabated across the United States and the world. The past two months have seen people mobilizing for Palestine in huge numbers. Jewish Americans, in particular, have turned out in larger numbers than ever before and in far more militant ways. Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now have carried out dozens of nonviolent direct actions across the country, shutting down highways, bridges, train stations, and institutions like colleges and even Congressional office buildings. In this episode, our Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel, speaks with Katie Halper about why Jews should support the Palestinian cause. Katie talks about lessons she's taken from the Holocaust and has a special message for high-profile Jewish Americans like Amy Schumer. Katie is a journalist, activist, and filmmaker who hosts the Katie Halper Show and the podcast Useful Idiots. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 63. But We Must Speak: On Palestine and the Mandates of Conscience

Israeli bombs continue to rain down on the Palestinian residents of Gaza. As of this recording, over 9,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed, a figure that includes over 3,700 children. Multiple experts on international law and the history of genocide have said that Israel’s actions do indeed amount to genocide. In this episode of the podcast, we’re going to hear a program staged by the Palestine Festival of Literature on November 1, titled: But We Must Speak: On Palestine and the Mandates of Conscience. The event featured: Michelle Alexander, the acclaimed civil rights lawyer and author of The New Jim Crow; Professor Rashid Khalidi in conversation with National Book Award winner Ta-Nehisi Coates; Pulitzer Prize-winning Mojave American poet Natalie Diaz; Scholar and international legal expert, Noura Erakat; and poet, activist, and Mondoweiss's Culture Editor, Mohammed El-Kurd. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical, independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 62. Antony Loewenstein on Israeli exports of weapons and surveillance tech around the world

The impact of the Israeli occupation of Palestine extends far beyond the disputed borders of the region. Israeli companies – many with close ties to the government and military – export weapons and surveillance technology across the globe. Palestinians and their communities serve as test subjects, where potential clients can witness the impact of Israeli technology in an urban warfare setting. Award-winning journalist Antony Loewenstein details this dynamic in his book "The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World". It was published by Verso earlier this year. 60. Unpacking Christian Zionism with Rev. Dr. Don Wagner

Today we’re excited to share an episode from the Latitude Adjustment Podcast looking at the role Christian Zionism plays in continuing persecution of Palestinians. Eric Maddox completed his graduate research in Conflict Transformation from Dheisheh Refugee Camp in the Occupied West Bank, collecting oral histories from the 1948 War. He is the founder and director of the Palestine Podcast Academy, and the host of Latitude Adjustment Podcast. He interviewed Rev. Dr. Don Wagner, a friend of Mondoweiss, and expert on Christian Zionism. From Latitude Adjustment's show notes: While there have been different strains of Christian Zionism dating back to the Sixteenth Century, the most politicized, powerful, and violent iteration of the movement has its roots in the contemporary Christian Evangelical Church. Modern Christian Zionists hold that the ethnic cleansing of roughly 750,000 Palestinians from their homes in historic Palestine in 1948 by Jewish Zionists was the fulfillment of a Biblical prophecy in which the so-called Holy Land must be resettled by the Jewish people in order to usher in the return of Jesus Christ as the messiah. Modern Christian Zionism is distinct from the modern form of political Zionism that arose amongst the European Jewish community in the late 19th Century. Don Wagner is a Christian theologian, a former minister, and author. He received a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary. He is also author of, "Glory to God in the Lowest: Journeys to an Unholy Land". 59. Conditioning U.S. aid to Israel and anti-Palestinian smears at Florida State University

Today we have two interviews from our US correspondent, Michael Arria.  First he speaks with Josh Ruebner about the shifting politics around U.S. aid to Israel, and later, he checks in with the victim of an anti-Palestinian smear campaign at Florida State University. We begin with U.S. aid to Israel. The fight in Congress continues to build over the billions of dollars we send to Israel every year. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen is the latest to call for conditioning US aid to Israel, joining other high profile figures such as Bernie Sanders, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others. At the same time, however, a high-profile delegation of Democrats in the House Representatives were in Israel meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu. This trip was sponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, and they have been furiously promoting it online over the past several days. Many, if not all of the Congress members on the trip filmed videos for AIPAC’s social media channels in which they profess their love and admiration for Israel. Phil Weiss, our founder and senior editor, said they looked like hostage videos. So, what is happening with the issue of aid funds for Israel? Michael spoke to Josh Ruebner about the history of US aid to Israel and the emerging fractures in Congress over this enormous amount of money. Josh is the author of Israel: Democracy or Apartheid State? and Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace. He is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University. Then to Florida. The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights recently announced that it was opening an investigation into Florida State University's handling of a smear campaign targeting one of its students. Ahmad Daraldik was elected FSU student senate president in June 2020, but immediately faced backlash from campus groups, pro-Israel organizations, and even local politicians over his criticisms of Israel. Social media posts Daraldik made as a child, while facing Israeli oppression, were dug up in the process. Michael spoke to Ahmad about the smear campaign, his original complaint, and the historic Education Department probe. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 58. Miko Peled and Phil Weiss on centering Palestinians and saving Jewish culture from Zionism

Mondoweiss was founded by Phil Weiss, a career journalist, while he was on staff at The New York Observer. In 2006 a wealthy young man named Jared Kushner bought the Observer. After tolerating Phil’s writing on Israel for a brief period, Phil was forced out by Kushner, but he was allowed to keep his blog. Phil is a magnanimous guy and he credits Kushner with freeing him from the world of mainstream journalism to pursue his interest in Israel and the fascination with it that much of American Jewish society clings to. We get asked a lot about the name of the site, Mondoweiss. It was the name of the blog version when it was hosted at the Observer and Phil kept it when he left. One definition of the word “mondo” is “very, or extremely”. So the name “Mondoweiss” was meant as a lighthearted joke that the site would be “extremely Weiss”, because initially Phil was the only author. But the site has grown and evolved into a full-fledged news and analysis publication with staff in the United States and Palestine. We are one of the only U.S.-based publications with a full Palestine news bureau and not simply one reporter in the region. So Jared Kushner might have hoped to prevent Phil from gaining an audience for critical takes on Israel, Zionism, and the American Jewish community, but instead he helped launch an important media outlet in the struggle for Palestinian freedom. This episode of the podcast features an extended interview with Phil, conducted by Miko Peled, the veteran Israeli anti-occupation campaigner. They discuss the origins of Mondoweiss, how Zionism destroyed American Jewish culture, and many other topics. It was originally published on Miko’s podcast in January of this year in three parts. 57. Unpacking Israel’s attack on the Jenin refugee camp

Israel’s military invasion of the Jenin Refugee Camp, dubbed “Operation Home and Garden” came to an end late Tuesday night. It left at least 12 Palestinians dead, and one Israeli soldier. Israel has, predictably, declared the operation a success. They say 120 Palestinians were arrested and weapons caches were destroyed, including bomb making materials. The Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said: “in the last two days we interrupted the weapon production process, seized thousands of bombs, some small and some large, and destroyed dozens of factories, workshops and laboratories.” Our reporters have not yet been able to verify his claim that “dozens” of locations related to the armed resistance in Jenin were destroyed. While the military and political leadership in Israel gloats, Palestinians in Jenin are telling a different story of the largest attack on the camp  since 2002’s Operation Defensive Shield. In this assault, Israel deployed up to 2,000 troops backed by armored vehicles, attack helicopters, and warplanes. They turned family homes into sniper positions. They fired tear gas and live ammunition into hospitals- in one case rendering the Emergency Room facilities unusable and forcing staff to treat injured people in the building’s main hallway. They destroyed large portions of the refugee camp’s vital infrastructure, digging up roads throughout the camp with armored bulldozers, knocking out segments of the electrical system, and damaging key water pipelines. As the story from inside the camp emerges, it is clear that this invasion was not an easy one for the region’s most powerful military. The resistance groups in the camp appear to have put up a strong defense, preventing the Israeli military from exercising full control over the area. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government may have thought they would have a repeat of the 2002 invasion. They clearly did not. Today I’m joined by our Palestine News Team to discuss all of these events and what the ramifications are, politically, for Palestinians, Israelis and the international community. Yumna Patel is our Palestine News Director, based in Bethlehem. Faris Giacaman is our Managing Editor, based in Ramallah. 55. The impact of Israel's raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan

The Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem encompasses several key sites central to Islam, including the Dome of the Rock, the third holiest site for Muslims, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have ascended to heaven, where he spoke to God. The compound sits on the Temple Mount, where the ancient Hebrew temple once stood. Today we have a conversation with our Palestine news team about the events surrounding Al Aqsa during Ramadan this year. As readers of our site and listeners to this podcast are surely aware, the Israeli government carried out several raids of the Al Aqsa compound in the last few weeks, leaving one Palestinian dead and hundreds injured and arrested. The Zionist propaganda machine has been working overtime to paint Palestinians as poor caretakers of these sacred spaces, claiming that children playing soccer, or the very presence of fireworks prove that they don’t deserve to be there in the first place. Yumna Patel, our Palestine News Director, leads the discussion with Mariam Barghouti in the West Bank, Tareq Hajjaj in Gaza, and myself. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 54. What do the protests in Israel mean for Palestinians living under apartheid?

Protests continue in Israel. Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu walked back his government’s push to overhaul the Israeli judicial system, but did not abandon the effort. Instead, the government will take it up again in a few months when the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, returns from its spring recess. As part of the agreement to delay the legislation, a new national guard force will be created under the control of the National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir. Dr. Yara Hawari, senior political analyst at the Palestinian thinktank Al-Shabaka, says, "Itamar Ben-Gvir is an extremist, he’s someone who has consistently called for violence against Palestinians throughout his political career." In today’s episode, Mondoweiss Palestine News Director Yumna Patel speaks with Dr. Hawari about developments in the protests, and what they mean for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and apartheid. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 52. Rising resistance in Jenin and lawfare in the United States

We have two interviews in this episode. First, I’ll talk to Mondoweiss’s Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel, about her new video report published today titled On The Brink: Jenin’s rising resistance. Then we’ll hear from Ahmad Abuznaid, the executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, about their legal battle with the Jewish National Fund. First, to the Jenin refugee camp. On January 26 the Israeli army conducted a deadly invasion into the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. In the span of a few hours, the army shot and killed 9 Palestinians. A 10th Palestinian died a few days later from injuries sustained during the raid. It was one of the deadliest single invasions into the Jenin camp, and in the West Bank, in years. It came on the heels of a year-long effort by the Israeli military to quash the resurgence of Palestinian armed resistance. The Jenin refugee camp has a long history of armed resistance to Israel’s occupation. Yumna traveled to Jenin just days after the deadly raid to speak to the people there and hear about what they experienced. Then, back to the United States. In 2019 the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and a group of American Israelis sued the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) over its support for the nonviolent BDS movement. The US Campaign is a fiscal sponsor of the Boycott National Committee, which has ties to various groups in Palestine. According to the lawsuit, some of those groups are terrorist organizations responsible for fire bomb attacks on land owned by the Jewish National Fund in Israel. Activists say this is simply the latest attempt to suppress human rights work. Earlier this month Diala Shamas, a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights and one of the attorneys representing the US Campaign, told The Guardian, “The goal here is to harass the US Campaign [for Palestinian Rights]. This is something that we’re seeing more broadly: smearing human rights advocates with accusations of terrorism, and efforts to drag human rights advocates and protesters into court, into extended litigation that distracts them from their advocacy. In the Palestine context we see that happening a lot, both in the United States and by Israel." In 2021 the case was dismissed by a federal court in Washington DC, but the JNF appealed and it's now back in court. Mondoweiss’s US correspondent Michael Arria spoke with US Campaign Executive Director Ahmad Abuznaid about the legal proceedings, the history of the JNF, and the wider context of this fight. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 51. Tony Greenstein on Zionism during the Holocaust

Last year Tony Greenstein published a book that was the culmination of many years of research, titled “Zionism During the Holocaust: The Weaponization of Memory in the Service of State and Nation”. The book examines in great detail the Holocaust mythology that Israel promotes and deploys in a strategic manner to neutralize and smear intellectual and political criticisms of its human rights violations. Greenstein has long pedigree. He has been an anti-Zionist in Britain for more than 40 years. He is a founding member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the biggest organization in the UK focused on Palestinian human rights. An author and blogger and son of a rabbi, Greenstein is also an active trade unionist. 48. One year of organizing tech workers against Israeli Apartheid

Mondoweiss has been covering the “No Tech for Apartheid” movement for over a year now. In October 2021 hundreds of workers at Google and Amazon published an open letter in The Guardian condemning Project Nimbus, a billion dollar contract between the two tech companies and the Israeli government. The deal helps provide cloud services to the Israeli Defense Forces. The letter reads: “We cannot look the other way, as the products we build are used to deny Palestinians their basic rights, force Palestinians out of their homes and attack Palestinians in the Gaza Strip – actions that have prompted war crime investigations by the international criminal court.” A lot has happened since that letter ran, as the No Tech for Apartheid movement has continued to grow. Our U.S. correspondent Michael Arria checked in with two organizers to talk about its current state and what might come next. Ariel Koren is an activist and was formerly a product marketing manager at Google for Education. Earlier this year Koren was forced out of her job after facing retaliation from the company over her activism. Bathool Syed is an activist and content strategist at Amazon. We’ll also hear some testimonials from Google and Amazon workers from a video the campaign published a few months ago. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 47. The suppression of speech on Palestine in Canada

Our fall fundraising campaign is underway and generous supporters have agreed to match your donations. Mondoweiss is a reader and listener-funded non-profit news publication. This gives us the independence to report on events in Palestine accurately and comprehensively because we answer to you, our readers and listeners. In the past 3 years we’ve invested pretty heavily to grow our team of reporters and contributors. We now have 4 full-time staff in Palestine, 5 full-time staff in the U.S., and many regular contributors all over the world. And I’ll be honest, growing a non-profit news organization in today’s media landscape is a pretty risky move. But we believe the movement for Palestinian liberation is in a transformative moment. And we believe that Mondoweiss plays a critical role in centering Palestinian and anti-Zionist voices. That’s why we’ve taken this risk to grow our staff in these uncertain times, and it’s why we need your support. Please visit our website at mondoweiss.net to learn more about our fundraising campaign and chip in. Your contribution will be matched, doubling your impact. Thanks so much! The Canadian group Independent Jewish Voices today is releasing a report titled “Unveiling the Chilly Climate - The Suppression of Speech on Palestine In Canada.” Researchers Sheryl Nestel and Rowan Gaudet spent the last year gathering information and testimonials about the repression faced by academics, students and Palestine solidarity activists across Canada. This is the first study to use ethnographic methodology and qualitative analysis to describe both the overarching effects of this repression as well as the deeply personal impact it has on activists, artists, students and professors. While many people active in the Palestine solidarity movement are familiar with the tactics described in the report, it is shocking to read the dozens of testimonials collected and understand the extent and scope of the suppression efforts. I spoke to Sheryl and Rowan last week about the report and what can be done to counter these attacks. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Stefan Christoff is an organizer with Musicians For Palestine. Hundreds of musicians from around the world signed on to their first statement of support for Palestinian freedom in 2021. Today, the group is announcing 700 new signers and releasing a second statement It reads, in part, “As musicians we can contribute to breaking the wall of silence and protest these great injustices taking place against the Palestinian people…We believe that now, more than ever, is the time to respect the Palestinian peaceful picket line by declining invitations to events that are subsidised or sponsored by the Israeli state, its lobby groups or complicit cultural institutions.” I spoke with Christoff about the work to organize musicians, and we listen to a few of the artists that have signed the statements, including Brian Eno, Damon Davis, and Asher Gamedze. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 44. UN experts condemn Israel's attacks on Palestinian civil society

On August 18th of this year, the Israeli military raided the offices of seven Palestinian civil society organizations. They ransacked the offices, stole files and other property, and sealed the doors in an attempt to prevent them from operating. Twenty-five United Nations’ “Independent Experts” issued a declaration on August 24th condemning “Israel’s escalating attacks against Palestinian civil society.” The declaration continued, “These actions amount to severe suppression of human rights defenders and are illegal and unacceptable.” These Independent Experts are calling on UN member states “to take effective measures afforded by international law to put an end to these abuses.” David Kattenberg spoke with two of the authors of the August 24th declaration. Francesca Albanese is the “Special UN Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967.” Mary Lawlor is “Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.” - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 43. Operation Breaking Dawn and Israeli elections

On August 5th, Israel launched a three day operation in the besieged Gaza Strip. They dubbed it “Operation Breaking Dawn”. Israel’s acting Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, promote the operation as a preemptive strike to quash what he said were concrete threats by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement in Gaza. Over the course of three days 49 Palestinians were killed, including 17 children. According to our documentation, while many PIJ members and affiliates were indeed targeted, the majority of those that were killed were civilian noncombatants. The operation was the second major Israeli offensive on Gaza since last year. It also happened to fall just a few months before Israel’s upcoming elections at a time when Israel’s current prime minister and his party are struggling in the polls. In the wake of the attack many Palestinians accused Israeli officials of using Gazans as sacrificial pawns in their political games, while Lapid, and others in his government, hailed it as a success. Amjad Iraqi joins Yumna Patel to discuss Israel’s political motivations behind the Gaza attack. Amjad is an editor and writer at 972 Magazine, based in Haifa. He’s also a policy analyst at the think tank Al-Shabaka and was previously an advocacy coordinator at the legal center Adalah. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 42. Canada's response to Israel's latest attack on Gaza w/Michael Bueckert

Earlier this month Israel launched airstrikes across Gaza. In our last episode, Mondoweiss’ Palestine-based staff talked about the historical and political context of this attack. Our Gaza Correspondent, Tareq Hajjaj, spoke movingly about what he experienced first hand during the assault. Listen to it here. This week we’re excited to share an episode of the North Untapped podcast, hosted by Alex Cosh, a Canadian journalist and managing editor of The Maple. North Untapped is a weekly show about Canadian politics, foreign policy and history. In this episode, Alex speaks to Michael Bueckert, vice president of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East about Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, and the Canadian government’s non-response. They also talk about the roots of the current situation in Palestine, and how Canada helps Israel act with impunity. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 41: Israel attacks Gaza again; Palestinian resistance remains

Last Friday, August 5, 2022, the Israeli military launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip. In response, hundreds of rockets were fired from Gaza by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance group. Most of these were intercepted by Israel’s air defense systems. The few that managed to make it through caused relatively minor damage to a few cars and buildings. In contrast, 48 Palestinians died from the three days of Israeli air bombardment. This included 17 children. One of the first Palestinians to be killed was only 5 years old. In this episode, our Palestine news team joins the podcast to talk about what led to the violence this past week, its impact on Palestinian and Israeli politics, and what Palestinians in Gaza lived through over the past week. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 40. How Pro-Israel PACs are upending Democratic primaries

We are about halfway through the primary election season in the United States. This cycle has seen an explosive growth in spending from political action committees tied to pro-Israel lobby groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC. In this episode Michael Arria and I speak with Beth Miller from JVP Action and campaign consultant Peter Feld about how this direct campaign engagement from Israel lobby groups is affecting elections. But first, I asked Michael to update us on the Michigan primary where Democrat Andy Levin lost in a high-profile race that attracted a flood of money from the Israel lobby PACs. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 39. The UN is investigating the root causes of violence between Israelis and Palestinians

In May, 2021, fighting broke out between Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza and the Israeli military. Three hundred Palestinian residents of Gaza were killed, including 66 children, and thousands more were injured. The United Nation’s Human Rights Council set up a Commission of Inquiry to identify the “root causes'' of the violence. On June 7th of this year the Commission presented its first report to the UN Human Rights Council. Unlike past UN commissions of inquiry on violence between Israelis and Palestinians, the mandate of this Commission is not time-limited. It is not subject to annual renewal. And it is not restricted to examining the immediate circumstances that led to its formation. Rather, it was told to take its time, and examine the “underlying root causes of recurrent tensions.” In further contrast with past commissions and Special Rapporteurs on the occupied Palestinian territories, this Commission has been tasked with examining the situation in both the occupied Palestinian territories and, in the words of the Commission’s June report, “Israel itself.” The commission is led by several highly experienced leaders in international law, including Miloon Kothari, who served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on adequate housing with the Human Rights Council. In the wake of the Commission’s first report, Mondoweiss contributor David Kattenburg spoke with Miloon Kothari. His views were both candid and cutting. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 38. Joe Biden goes to Jerusalem

Last week U.S. President Joe Biden met with senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders in a whirlwind trip through the Middle East. Biden had several top-level goals for this trip. He wanted to deepen connections between the U.S. and Israeli militaries, continue the so-called “normalization” efforts between the Israeli government and regional Arab states, and convince the Saudi Arabian government to increase oil production in order to lower global prices and offset the economic impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine. He also managed, in classic off-script Biden fashion, to acknowledge that the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation is just like the Irish struggle against the British – although in this case Biden is unconditionally supporting the British. Joining us today are Mondoweiss staff reporters who covered the trip. Phil Weiss is the founder and Senior editor of Mondoweiss. Yumna Patel is our Palestine News Director based in Bethlehem. Michael Arria is our U.S. correspondent and author of the weekly politics newsletter, The Shift. 37. Arkansas' anti-BDS law was upheld in court. What happens now?

Last month a US court of appeals upheld an Arkansas law that prohibits state contractors from boycotting Israel. The 9-1 decision reversed a previous ruling that determined the law was unconstitutional. Despite the fact that over 30 states have adopted similar laws, it was the first full federal appeals court ruling on the subject. The decision was written by Judge Jonathan Kobes, a Trump appointee the American Bar Association rated as unqualified when he was nominated. The Arkansas story dates back to 2018 when a local paper, the Arkansas Times, refused to sign a pledge promising to refrain from boycotting Israel in order to obtain an  advertising contract with a public university. The paper’s publisher, Alan Leveritt, sued the state over the law. He was represented by the ACLU. Leveritt has said he’s not a supporter of BDS, but launched the complaint over First Amendment concerns. U.S. correspondent Michael Arria spoke with Amal Thabateh, the Michael Ratner Justice Fellow at Palestine Legal about the ruling and its potential legal impact going forward. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 35. Michael Lynk: "This is apartheid."

In this episode we’re excited to share an interview with Michael Lynk, the 7th Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the Palestinian Territories, appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Michael’s term in that role just ended and he spoke to scientist, author and activist David Kattenburg about the state of things in Palestine and reflections on his service. Before we get to that interview, we wanted to let you know about a new video report produced by our Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel. As readers of the site and listeners of this podcast know, Yumna is based in Bethlehem where she covers breaking news and produces video reports and documentaries. On Thursday, May 5, we’ll premier a new video report titled Inside Israeli Apartheid. For decades Palestinians have accused Israel of the crime of Apartheid, imposing two different legal systems on the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea: one system privileges Jews, and another discriminates against Palestinians. Now, the rest of the world is catching up. In the past year, the leading global and Israeli human rights groups have joined their Palestinian counterparts in calling Israel an Apartheid state. From the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, to Palestinian communities inside Israel, this report looks Inside Israeli Apartheid, explaining how it works, and how it affects the daily lives of Palestinians. 34. Palestinian activists reflect on the future of the Palestinian Liberation Movement

In this episode we’re going to hear a program organized by the Adalah Justice Project and the American Friends Service Committee earlier this month, marking the Land Day anniversary and the beginning of Ramadan. The first Land Day in Palestine took place on March 30, 1976, when Palestinians organized large demonstrations and a nation-wide strike against Israel's plan to seize Palestinian land to build Jewish-only settlements. They were met with brutal Israeli repression and the massacre of six Palestinians. On Land Day in 2018, more than 100,000 Palestinians joined the historic Great March of Return in Gaza to protest Israel’s inhumane blockade and demand that millions of Palestinian refugees be given the freedom to return to their homes. This year, the Islamic holy month of Ramadan began on April 1. The day before, on Land Day, the Israeli government unleashed a new round of violence on Palestinians. In the program you’ll hear Palestinian activists from Gaza, the West Bank, and 1948 Palestine shared their reflections and analyses of the current situation on the ground across Palestine, and what recent moments of popular resistance mean in the broader context of the Palestinian struggle. First, Adam Horowitz, Mondoweiss’ Executive Editor, talks with Sandra Tamari, the Executive Director of the Adalah Justice Project. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 32. Confronting "Hasbara Culture" with Yakov Hirsch

In this episode we have a conversation with Phil Weiss and Yakov Hirsch about the cultural sources of pro-Israel movements in American politics. For several years now Hirsch has examined what he calls "hasbara culture" -- the ways that a discourse of Jewish victimhood has conquered Jewish, Israeli, and even American political culture. Hirsch explains how this “hasbara culture” worldview has been propagated by Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli politicians, by anti-antisemitism organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, and by, quote, “Never Again” journalists with prominent platforms, notably Jeffrey Goldberg, Bari Weiss, Bret Stephens and Yair Rosenberg. Having the hasbara culture world view is what it means to be a “good Jew” these days according to Hirsch, and we must confront this alternative reality if there is to be justice in the land from the river to the sea. When the conversation begins, Yakov is describing in detail the events surrounding the death of Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a Palestinian who stabbed an Israeli soldier in the occupied city of Hebron in March 2016. Al-Sharif was shot and was lying wounded and defenseless on the ground when another Israeli soldier, Elor Azaria, shot him in the head from close range, killing him. The event was captured on video by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 27. The Israeli campaign to shut down Palestinian civil society

In October 2021, the Israeli government designated six Palestinian civil society organizations, “terrorist institutions”, claiming the groups had ties and were channeling money to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The PFLP is a secular Marxist-Leninist, and revolutionary socialist organization founded in 1967 and, like several other Palestinian political factions, is considered by Israel to be a “terrorist organization.” The Israeli designation aimed to criminalize the work of the six organizations and cut their international funding. It sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups across the globe. Recently, our Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel, sat down with Sahar Francis, the General Director of the Ramallah-based group Addameer, one of the civil society groups targeted by the Israeli government. Addameer provides legal and advocacy support to Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli and Palestinian prisons. Sahar is an attorney by training, and joined Addameer in 1998, first as a human rights lawyer, then as head of the Legal Unit. Sahar Francis warns that if this move by the Israeli government goes unchallenged, the effort to undermine Palestinian civil society organizations won’t end with these six groups. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 24. Organized labor vs. Project Nimbus

Striketober is upon us. Across the United States workers in multiple industries are striking, quitting their jobs, and engaging in solidarity actions demanding better working conditions. The movement for Palestinian liberation has long interacted with labor struggles around the world, and this moment is no different. 22. How Iron Dome funding split the Democratic Party on Israel

On Thursday of this past week, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would give Israel an additional $1 billion dollars in military aid for its missile defense system known as the Iron Dome. Progressives in the House had earlier managed to strip the bill as an attachment to a must-pass government funding bill known as a continuing resolution. In response, Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer put the legislation on the floor as a stand-alone bill without going through the normal committee process, or what is called regular order. I spoke to Beth Miller, Senior Government Affairs Manager at JVP Action, about the political maneuvering that brought the bill to floor and to it’s ultimate passage. - - - SUPPORT OUR WORK: Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 20. Khaled Elgindy on the post-Netanyahu U.S./Israel relationship

Mondoweiss founder and senior editor Phil Weiss speaks to Khaled Elgindy about the first meeting between President Joe Biden and newly installed Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Earlier this year Bennett joined centrist politician Yair Lapid to build an unusual coalition of rightwing, centrist, and liberal political parties to topple Benjamin Netanyahu. This government marks the first time Palestinian Israeli political parties are included in a governing coalition. Bennett is a far-right political figure opposed to Palestinian statehood and ending settlement expansion, and he’s focused on Iran as the greatest threat to Israeli security. Khaled Elgindy is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute where he directs the Program on Palestine and Israeli-Palestinian Affairs. Prior to that he was a fellow in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution. Elgindy was an adviser to the Palestinian leadership on permanent status negotiations with Israel from 2004 to 2009, and was a key participant in the Annapolis negotiations of 2007 and 2008. He is the author of the book, Blind Spot: America and the Palestinians, from Balfour to Trump.

19. Pro-Palestine political advocacy groups are building political power in Washington D.C.

Just a few years ago the idea of a pro-Palestine political advocacy group in Washington D.C. seemed ridiculous. But U.S. politics around Palestine are shifting and a number of these groups have sprung up recently. The latest grows out of the nonprofit American Muslims for Palestine who just launched their own affiliated 501c4 organization, Americans for Justice in Palestine Action. Earlier this week Mondoweiss' U.S. correspondent Michael Arria spoke with Dr. Osama Abuirshaid and Ayah Ziyadeh. Correction: An earlier version of the text referred to AJP Action as a political action committee (IRS 527). It is a social welfare organization (IRS 501(c)4.) Dr. Osama Abuirshaid is the Executive Director and a board member of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). He is a board member of the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), an umbrella organization of eight major national American Muslim organizations. He lectures frequently on Middle East and American politics. He is a regular commentator on Palestinian and Middle Eastern affairs as well as on the American domestic and foreign policy on various Arabic satellite T.V. channels such as Aljazeera. He authored or co-authored several books in Arabic and he published dozens of studies and articles in Arabic and English, on issues relevant to the Middle East and its political climate. He is the co-author of the controversial study: "Hamas: Ideological Rigidity and Political Flexibility," which was published by the United States Institute of Peace in 2009. He is a community activist and speaker. Abuirshaid completed his PhD in Political Science at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. Ayah Ziyadeh is AMP's advocacy director. She is a Palestinian-American human rights activist, advocate, and writer who maintains a track record in organizing awareness of Palestine and other crucial human rights issues. She has 5+ years of political and grassroots advocacy as well as lobbying campaign experience. This experience consists of being legislative staff, a lobbying intern working closely with the ACLU, and an organizer working with several different organizations and coalitions, providing her with extensive knowledge of all of the spaces contributing to policy-making and advocacy. Aside from her work, Ayah is completing her master's in International Human Rights at the Josef Korbel School of International Relations. Throughout her graduate experience, she has specialized in Palestinian rights and the dynamics of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. She has completed an abundance of research and policy work on the issue. - - - SUPPORT OUR WORK: Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 17. '48 Palestine after the Unity Uprising

In this episode we have a conversation with Wesam Sharaf, an advocate with the Civil and Political Rights Unit at Adalah — The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. In May Palestinian citizens of Israel participated in massive protests and boycotts as part of the “Unity Uprisings”. Many Palestinians described these protests as the largest display of unity between the West Bank, Gaza, and '48 Palestine in years. Mondoweiss Palestine Correspondent Yumna Patel talks with Wesam about life after the Unity Uprising for Palestinian citizens of Israel. In the wake of the protests, Palestinian citizens of Israel have continued to be arrested en masse and jailed by Israeli police forces. Despite this, Wesam and other advocates say that air of resistance in Palestinian communities in Israel remains strong. - - - SUPPORT OUR WORK: Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 16. The Palestinian Resistance & Sheikh Jarrah

As events in Palestine continue to develop we're bringing you this special episode in collaboration with the Groundings podcast and friend-of-the-site Devyn Springer. Devyn is a cultural worker, community organizer, and independent researcher. They are a member of the Walter Rodney Foundation, and host of the Groundings podcast. They've written and worked with several media outlets, including Mondoweiss, and produced documentaries such Parchman Prison: Pain & Protest. Today, Devyn and their co-host speak to Mohammed El-Kurd. Mohammed is a poet, writer, and activist from Jerusalem, Palestine. He lives in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood where the Israeli government is trying to forcibly remove his family and other Palestinian families so that Israeli settlers can take over their homes. Protests have been ongoing in Sheikh Jarrah over the last several weeks. Israeli forces escalated the violence by entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as the holy month of Ramadan came to an end, attacking tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers. Hamas, in Gaza, issued an ultimatum to Israel to withdraw its forces from Al-Aqsa and Sheikh Jarrah or it wide launch rockets into Israeli-held territory. The Israeli government ignored the deadline, and since late last week has carried out massive airstrikes against the civilian population in Gaza. As of this recording on Monday, May 17th, Israel has killed over 200 Palestinians in Gaza, including 61 children, and left over 1400 injured. - - - SUPPORT OUR WORK: Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 15. Palestinians under attack from Sheikh Jarrah to Gaza & Human Rights Watch says Israel is guilty of apartheid

Last Friday, as the holy month of Ramadan came to a close, Israeli forces stormed the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City. Mondoweiss’ Palestine correspondent, Yumna Patel reported that: “The height of the violence took place inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, where tens of thousands of Palestinian worshipers had gathered inside the Mosque and the surrounding courtyard for evening prayers on the last Friday of Ramadan. Video footage from the scene shows people in prayer when armed Israeli forces stormed the compound, firing sound bombs, tear gas, and rubber bullets at worshipers.” By Monday, events had escalated. Hamas issued an ultimatum to Israel: withdraw from Al-Aqsa and the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood by 6:00 pm, and release all the Palestinians detained by police during the recent tensions in Jerusalem, or there would be retaliation. Shortly after 6pm, Hamas launched several barrages of rockets from Gaza targeting Jerusalem and other cities farther inside Israeli territory than in past rounds of violence. The Israeli reaction has been brutal. Airstrikes and land-based attacks on Gaza are still ongoing as we record this episode. Well over 100 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli attacks, many of them children. High rise apartment and office buildings are being specifically targeted, leaving hundreds people homeless and destroying the offices of many regional and international media outlets. We spoke with Yumna today for a brief update. After that, Phil Weiss talks to Dr. Norman Finkelstein about the recently released Human Rights Watch report that says Israel is guilty of apartheid. This groundbreaking report, as Dr. Finkelstein explains, indicts Israel for its current policies and practices, and for the full history of its efforts to engineer Jewish supremacy in Palestine. - - - SUPPORT OUR WORK: Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. 14. Students for Justice in Palestine: The past, present and future of the student movement for the liberation of Palestine

On university and college campuses across the United States and Canada, student activists are organizing for Palestinian liberation under the banner of Students for Justice in Palestine, or SJP. As the student-led movement has grown dramatically over the last 20 years, so has anti-Palestinian pushback from Zionist groups and their allies. Organizations like Canary Mission, StopAntiSemitism.org, and other similar rightwing groups have focused a lot of their attention on the student activists of SJP. Despite this, the movement on campuses is strong and shows little signs of slowing down. Earlier this year, the National Students for Justice in Palestine organization held its 10th annual conference. In today’s episode Michael Arria speaks with three SJP activists about how the movement has grown over the last 10 years, and where it is headed in the future. 13. Progressive except for Palestine: A conversation with Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick

Earlier this year, Mondoweiss contributing writer Sarah Doyal reviewed the new book, Except For Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics, from authors Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick. Sarah wrote: “Delving into the phenomenon long-named in leftist circles as [quote] “Progressive Except for Palestine” [end quote], Hill and Plitnick meticulously deconstruct progressives’ neglect of the Palestinian cause. They explain the ways in which the singular exception of Palestine from demands for equal rights betrays not only Palestinians but the progressive movement itself.” She went on to say: “Except for Palestine is a crucial and ultimately hopeful tool that better equips progressives to combat injustices within their own political circles.” On today’s show Josh Ruebner speaks with Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick about how they came to be advocates for Palestinian liberation, what needs to be done to push the struggle forward, and their critical new book. - - - - - Visit Uncle Bobbie’s online bookshop to buy the book: https://bookshop.org/shop/unclebobbies - - - - - - - - - - Links Marc Lamont Hill – Website: https://www.marclamonthill.com – Twitter: https://twitter.com/marclamonthill Mitchell Plitnick – Rethinking Foreign Policy: https://rethinkingforeignpolicy.org – Twitter: https://twitter.com/MJPlitnick Ending progressives’ Palestinian exception - Sarah Doyle: https://mondoweiss.net/2021/02/ending-progressives-palestinian-exception/ - - - - - - - - - - Visit Mondoweiss for critical coverage of Israel, Palestine, and related U.S. politics: https://mondoweiss.net Support our work with a tax-deductible donation: https://mondoweiss.net/donate/ Subscribe to our free newsletters covering daily headlines, weekly politics updates, and tracking COVID-19 in Palestine: https://mondoweiss.net/newsletters/ Follow us on social media: – Facebook: https://facebook.com/mondoweiss – Twitter: https://twitter.com/mondoweiss – Instagram: https://instagram.com/mondoweiss – Youtube: https://youtube.com/mondoweissvideos - - - - - FREE PALESTINE

This episode is all about elections. On March 23rd Israel held its fourth national election in two years. And starting in May Palestinians in the occupied territory will be holding their first elections in 15 years. Both elections will serve as a referendum on the current leaders, and both will give us insight into what the future may hold, both for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and, perhaps, Palestinians world-wide. First, Mondoweiss founder and senior editor Phil Weiss talks with the Israeli human rights activist and writer Yossi Gurvitz to unpack the results of the Israeli election and talk about what comes next. Later, Al-Shabaka Senior Analyst Dr. Yara Hawari and Mondoweiss contributing writer Dr. Haidar Eid speak to our Palestine correspondent, Yumna Patel, about Palestinian politics and whether democratic elections are even possible under Israeli occupation. 6. Proud Boys and Zionists team up

What is it like when Proud Boys and Zionists attack you online at the same time? We spoke to Olivia Katbi Smith, national U.S. organizer for the BDS Movement and co-chair of the Portland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. In the last few weeks, Olivia was one of the targets of a doxxing attack by a member of the Proud Boys. Shortly after, she was named the "Anti-Semite of the Week" by a rightwing organization created to harass pro-Palestinian activists. Michael Arria spoke to Meera Shah, senior staff attorney at Palestine Legal, about their new website that tracks anti-BDS legislation around the U.S. These bills, in both federal and state legislatures, are direct attacks on basic free speech protections and will have repercussions far beyond the movement to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
