Captains

Chris is on holiday this week, so Kyle and Michael are taking the armband - quite literally - as they discuss what it's like to a lead a team. They're joined by the former Everton and England skipper Phil Jagielka to discuss what makes a great captain and why. The trio look back on their careers as leaders and whether they were made or moulded; who their leadership heroes were; the best captains they played under - and the worst - what it's like to face up the media as the skipper; when can you be a friend to your teammates and when you have to be the police; and what sort of responsibilities a modern leader has when the manager takes control of so much of the on-pitch decision making. Phil and Kyle discuss leadership roles at international level and how that differs from being a club captain, and then the current Manchester City skipper talks about the responsibility of taking over the armband of the Premier League champions, the legacy his predecessors left him at the Etihad, and what it was like to raise that trophy above his head at the end of last season.

Away Days

On this week's episode, Kyle, Chris and Michael Brown discuss the best and worst away days for a footballer. From intimidating grounds and tight dressing rooms, to travel and pre-match meals, the trio dig into the weeds to find out what happens when a team plays away from home. Kyle discusses what it's like to be out of the country for long periods of time during pre-season tours and international tournaments, and what devices modern players use to quell the boredom. From petting dogs to Playstations, it's a fascinating insight into what happens when you're away from home for as much as five weeks at a time. They discuss the best and worst journeys to away grounds, notably an occasion when Kyle was playing for Spurs where there was a very difficult moment on a plane heading to Sunderland which forced one teammate to decide to take a taxi home to London from the north east rather than board a plane again. They talk best and worst roommates: don't room with Jimmy Bullard; the most intimidating grounds both in England and abroad, and why playing small teams in the FA Cup is unmatched. And the episode ends with a chaotic quiz to see whether Michael can really beat Kyle Walker when it comes to a very specific question set by Chris. To listen on most smart speakers just say “ask BBC Sounds to play You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker”

On the week's episode, Kyle and Chris discuss how the Manchester City skipper got into football and his early career, which took him from Sheffield United through the lower league loan system. The pair start on the Lansdowne Estate in Sheffield where they discuss the earliest games Kyle played in the playgrounds with his friends, before attending sessions for Football Unites, Racism Divides and being recommended to The Blades by one of the coaches. They then talk about the early days at Bramall Lane, cleaning the boots of the senior players, and what it was like for a lifelong fan of the club to sign professional forms. The pair finish by talking about how his first season as a professional ended up at Wembley in the Playoff Final and the pain of losing 1-0 to Burnley, and whether now, in the autumn of his career, he would consider ending his career back where it all started, at Bramall Lane.

Footballer's Football: What’s Going Wrong at Manchester United?

Callum decided to show up to the podcast this week, and his timing was immaculate after scoring his side’s winner at the weekend. But should he have had another goal? Footballer's Football: Has the Maguire criticism gone too far?

Callum was away on England duty, so couldn’t make this week’s pod. But don’t worry, Michail brought enough energy for two. With the Hammers making a near perfect start to the season, Rickie asks if a top four charge is realistic. How high can they finish? West Ham’s last win came as they became the first Premier League team to visit Kenilworth Road. So what was that like? The atmosphere was a little frosty, apparently. Have fans taken it too far, though? Harry Maguire has been at the end of an unfair amount of stick. Michail gives his take. Plus, he lends his support to Richarlison for his public decision to seek psychological help. Mo Salah’s Liverpool future looked in doubt towards the end of the summer transfer window, but for the time being he’s staying put on Merseyside. The season’s nearly over, but there’s still loads to play for. Callum’s Newcastle side are yet to fully secure a Champion’s League spot after dropping points at Leeds. And Michail’s West Ham have a European Cup Final place to fight for. There’s also the big issue of what Michail will be cooking for the end of season meal. Callum scored a brace from 12 yards at Elland Road, but how does he block out the noise coming from opposition players and fans? There was a bit of controversy on the sidelines in that game, too, as a Leeds fan entered the field of play and confronted Eddie Howe. What did the boys make of that and what do they think should be done to prevent future repeats of such events? The boys break down the Hammers’ 2-1 win against AZ Alkmaar, but a little birdie told Callum that Michail was getting bullied by their defender. Was that really the case? The title race looks to be all but over with Arsenal’s loss at home to Brighton. With the lead they held earlier in the season, will this be the biggest bottle job in Premier League history? And Pochettino is going to Chelsea… Michail didn’t see it coming, but could it be a masterstroke? Callum thinks Kane could be following. In Footballers Unfiltered this week we have questions about the boys’ favourite assists and Michail’s muted celebrations. Plus they judge a screamer from the halfway line in the Strikers’ Union. Is Gündoğan too old for Man City?

Last week Callum was all smiles, this week it’s Michail’s turn! West Ham look to have secured safety with a brilliant win against Manchester United, but what did the boys make of David de Gea’s howler? Howler or not, Michail feels they deserved victory and should have had at least a penalty too. The focus now turns to Europe with a HUGE semi-final on Thursday. Callum on the other hand is grumpy. Newcastle lost to the title challengers Arsenal in a tight and feisty game. Does it show how far Newcastle have come that they went toe to toe with the Gunners? Or is it a reminder they have some improvement to do yet? Competition throughout the league is as exciting (and uncertain) as ever. And the boys are reluctant to make predictions for fear of jinxing themselves. There’s ample time to discuss Manchester City’s remarkable season. One thing from their game at the weekend got the boys talking, however - should the penalty taker ever hand over responsibility to help a team-mate secure a hat-trick? Plus, with rumours circulating that Gündoğan may be too old for a new contract at City, the boys ask whether age just a number. In Footballers Unfiltered this week the boys answer questions about transfer gossip and how the game has changed over the years. And with the play-offs getting underway, they judge a brilliant volley from the Thurlow Nunn First Division North Play-Off Final. Have a question or a nomination for the boys? Is Callum in the form of his life?

It’s all smiles on one half of the podcast as Callum makes it EIGHT goals in April, from just TWO starts. He talks about his brace against Southampton and if his strike against Everton was one of his best yet! Michail’s back amongst the goals too, but after a good week last week, West Ham have suffered two defeats. Are they now looking nervously over their shoulders again? While we’re recording, Leicester and Everton play out a thrilling draw to ease the tension just a bit. Also, Michail has an interesting revelation as he explains how he tried to get Eberechi Eze a yellow card, after his opponent took his shirt off during a break in play. Surely within the rules, the referee should have produced a yellow card? Well, Michail thinks so and even pointed out the incident to the officials in the hope of gaining an advantage. The boys discuss celebrating too early after Richarlison’s wild celebrations were seemingly for nothing as Liverpool broke Spurs’ hearts. However, should Jota have even been on the pitch to score Liverpool’s injury time winner? Rickie doesn’t think so. And with the Spurs players refunding fans for last week’s showing against Newcastle, the boys give their take on whether they’d ever do the same. In this week’s Footballers Unfiltered, the boys are asked whether referees should be forced to do post match press conferences. They also assess a beautiful half volley, caught on CCTV for the Strikers Union. Have a question or a nomination for the boys? Send them in: [email protected].

How far can Wrexham go?

Where’s Rickie?! The pod’s third wheel is running late. But don’t fret, the boys have a very special replacement to fill in. Wrexham’s Paul Mullin logs on, with a bit of a hangover, to tell all on their wild season. What is it like to play under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership? How involved are the Hollywood owners? And what has the party been like since promotion to the Football League was confirmed on Saturday? Paul’s not the only one who’s had a good week though. Newcastle put on a show at St James’ Park as they thrashed Spurs 6-1. Callum explains what it was like to be in the ground as 5 goals went in within 20 minutes of play. And Michail is well and truly back in the goals; 3 in 4 days to be precise! What’s changed personally for him? And with safety almost secured and a European Semi final coming up, will we ultimately look back at this as a very successful season for the Hammers? And Pablo Fornals scored a ridiculous goal in their win over Bournemouth, but did he mean it? Either way, Michail is jealous of the acrobatic strike. Rickie eventually shows up to ask your questions and put a couple of nominations for the Strikers Union to the boys. We want to hear your crazy footballing stories, see your unbelievable goals and put any questions you may have to Michail and Callum. Send them in via [email protected].

Have Arsenal bottled it?

Callum’s late to the pod and in a bad mood. The flat tyre on his Lambo didn’t help. And he’s getting stick from John McGinn after his side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Villa. Should Newcastle fans be worried? Michail on the other hand has a wide smile and bags of energy after his team’s dramatic comeback at home to the league leaders. And he was involved at every stage, giving away a pen, causing chaos and missing a couple of cracking chances. What does that result mean for Arsenal’s title push, though? That’s twice in a week they’ve given away a 2-0 lead. Have they bottled it? Rickie’s team, Liverpool, announced last week that their pursuit of Jude Bellingham was over. What did Callum and Michail make of the news? Where will he be next season? And a masked rapper called Dide dropped a FIRE new track this week, called ‘Thrill’. But who is it? The boys don their best detective impressions as they speculate on his true identity. Can Callum or Michail rule themselves out? In this week’s Footballers Unfiltered, we have two very different questions. We get the boys take on Romelu Lukaku’s red card after being racially abused and Michail is asked to pick Callum’s next celebration. Plus, we have a cracking goal, direct from a corner, in this week’s Strikers’ Union. Have a question to pose to the boys, or an incredible footballing story or goal? Hey Macarena, ay!

Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena … Hey Macarena, ay! Callum’s silky moves at West Ham last week put social media and pundits in a state of hysterics. Finally, he gets to taunt Michail to his face. What did they both make of the game? And what would Michail have done if Callum did the Macarena in his face on the pitch, as promised? Aside from the 5-1 drubbing at home, the Hammers had a good week, with two clean sheet wins. Michail reflects on a possible turn of fortunes. Newcastle went one better, with 9 points out of 9. The Champions League in sight! But Callum was frustrated with the fact he started the weekend’s game on the bench after his brace in midweek. The big game from the weekend, though, was Liverpool vs Arsenal. It had everything, goals, a missed penalty and a flying elbow from an official. What did the boys make of it? Best game of the season so far? Last week the boys said clubs should never go back to their old managers. Since then, Lampard has gone back to Chelsea and Hodgson has returned to Palace. The international break means there’s been no Premier League football for Michail and Callum, but they’ve been busy… socialising in Dubai. They talk us through what they got up to in the break. And the football news didn’t stop either. Antonio Conte left Spurs ‘by mutual consent’. What did the boys make of that? Was it inevitable given what he said in THAT press conference? Did The Referee Get it Wrong?

And it wasn’t just West Ham and Newcastle that had refereeing controversies. The boys, along with Mark, discuss the hectic Chelsea v Tottenham game, which is being dubbed the ‘Battle of the Bridge 2.0’.
