How BREATHWORK saved Former NFL Tight End Joe Fauria's Life
On this episode we're joined by Joe Fauria (the biggest Joe you know), former NFL athlete turned Breathwork fascilitator.
In just his early 30's, Joe has accumulated a whirlwind of life experiences already, having reached the highest of the highs, and sinking to the lowest of lows. From the moment he walked into the studio, I felt a connection straight away, I'm not sure if it's the connection due to us both being former athletes, or just the high frequency he emits. This was one of my favourite conversations on the show to date, and we got DEEP.
Born and raised in California, Joseph Fauria (aka Big Joe) began his yoga practice in 2009 while playing football at UCLA before playing in the NFL.
After 4 years in the NFL, a severe ankle injury altered his life’s course and ended a lifelong commitment to the sport. Anxiety & depression became frequent combatants to a once joyous and purposeful existence, and Big Joe knew he needed to bring meaning back into his life.
In 2018, Big Joe embarked upon his spiritual journey, which eventually led to adding meditation and breathwork into his daily practice.
From playing in the NFL as a Tight End with the Detroit Lions, to guiding breathwork around the world and leading international wellness retreats, Big Joe has tangible life experiences that provides insight + techniques to heal, and bring balance to your life.

Dr. Hemal Patel on his work with Dr. Joe Dispenza and Re-Wiring the brain
Dr. Hemal Patel is a Professor and the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego. He now also works alongside Dr. Joe Dispenza to further understand how meditation and 're-wiring' the brain can help people improve their mental and physical health by changing the neural networks in their brains.
After discovering Dr. Joe's work, as a scientist, Dr. Hemal was intrigued to say the least, which is what has lead him down the path of actually researching the physical and mental benefits of attending Joe's week long advanced meditation retreat, along with other work/programs Dr. Joe is providing the masses.
Here's some of his own words on his findings so far...
"As a researcher and professor, in my line of work I talk to a lot of people throughout the day, and because I am so surprised and excited about what we are uncovering in Dr Joe’s community, I can’t help but share the findings. I usually start by showing them a tiny piece of data, and upon seeing their jaws drop, the conversation often turns into an hour-plus exploration of our research findings.
The most common reaction I receive from skeptics upon witnessing the approaches we’ve taken, the enormity of the data we’ve collected, and the results we’ve discovered is one of disbelief (myself included). Ultimately these conversations lead to acceptance—not to mention a curiosity to further explore the untold, wide-reaching benefits of meditation. As Dr Joe says, “Evidence is the loudest voice.”
After spending a week with Dr. Joe and Dr. Hemal at the week-long advanced meditation retreat , I was truly blown away, not only by my own personal experience, but more importantly the data that is being collected to show the power of what this work can truly do for so many people.

Adopt an ATHLETE MINDSET
Want to know the easiest way to get in the best shape of your life and stay there?
Start thinking like an athlete.
When you look at the mindset or the habits of an athlete, putting their sporting ability aside, they're no different to you or I.
Think about it, most people in the gym are striving somewhat to achieve the physique similar to that of an athlete. It may be someone you've looked up to or idolised, or it could simply be wanting to increase the amount of lean muscle tissue you have and lose enough body fat to achieve the definition and shape.
I've been fortunate enough to work with a number of world class athletes, from AFL players, NBL, boxing, wheelchair tennis and basketball, Olympians, motocross riders, Rugby, track athletes... the list goes on.
What I've noticed is that most people see themselves as almost a completely different species in comparison to athletes, but we're not.
Here's a few common traits of a professional athlete that every single one of us can adopt in our own way...

Duncan Armstrong found his FLOW STATE and Won Gold in the 200m Freestyle at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Duncan Armstrong shocked the world and brought home a Gold Medal in the 200m Freestyle, along with breaking the current World Record at the time. In this episode Duncan shares the training methods and mindset shift that went into shaving 5 seconds of his PB to ultimately bring home the Gold for Australia. Duncan also shares how times of adversity and shifting his perception of his identity have changed him for the better. Since retiring from professional swimming he's found faith, taken care of his health after suffering from a heart attack and needing a triple bypass, built a career in the media, recently started a new consulting business called 'Peak Impact' + much more.
