Harger: Demonization of opponents is dangerous for Democracy
In just two weeks, we’ll start seeing the first wave of election results roll in, giving us a pretty good idea of who our next group of elected leaders will be. It’s a big moment after months of campaigning, debates and all the talk.
But honestly, I’m feeling a bit worn out.

I guess a second presidential debate won't happen again this year, and that’s too bad. The American public deserves to see Harris and Trump one more time, side-by-side on one stage, answering tough questions and describing why each believes they would make the better president.

So I’m sitting there working, and the whole system starts blinking. Then, the monitor goes black -- nothing on the screen but darkness. The monitor light is on. It’s still working, but the computer driving it dies.

Ross: With claims that Haitian migrants eat pets, fact-checking remains vital to debates
Over the weekend, after some fact-checking, the news shows did a deep analysis into why J.D. Vance and Donald Trump would spread a rumor about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets and hunting geese.
It’s a little concerning because they’re running for a job where the decisions involve trillions of dollars and the world’s most powerful military – and they went public with a story that turned out to be a neighborhood rumor.
I understand why they’d run with it. It’s because some stories are just too good to fact-check. And sure enough, once fact-checking was done here, the story fell apart and became boring: It was based on fourth-hand information; pictures of a cat and geese from unrelated incidents.

That’s why the commencement speech by Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker caught me off guard. His theme: Stay in your lane. Matt Markovich: Compassion needs accountability
A pastor friend of mine has a personal policy that whenever a street beggar asks him for money, he gives them whatever he has in his pocket.
He says sometimes it painful when he pulls out a couple of $20 dollar bills – but he gives it away – asking no questions on how it will be used.
I’m not that generous – some might even say - I’m not that compassionate.
I want to be a good steward of my hard earn money. So when someone approaches me – I ask them questions – what do you need the money for? If you need a meal, I’ll take you to that McDonald’s over there. When this has happened – nobody has taken me up on my offer.
So when King County dug into its pocket and pulled out $2 million dollars last week to help house dozens of asylum seekers and refugees in Tukwila – I took pause.
It’s the latest instalment in the saga of the Riverton United Methodist Church that open its grounds last year to asylum seekers from Venezuela – at first the church didn’t reject anybody – but word got out – others started camping on their grounds – it got overwhelming.
Supporters begged elected officials for help – to solve a problem of their making.
The City of Seattle had already stepped in with 100’s of thousands of dollars for hotel rooms – Now the County is handing out $2 million more.
I’m not heartless person – and people truly seeking a better life need help – but I expect elected officials to be good stewards of our hard-earned tax dollars – and ask questions before digging deep into our collective pocket and hand out millions.
Maybe their being compassionate – just like my pastor friend.
But when it comes to our money – elected official’s ‘compassion’ needs to held accountable – how that money is being used – and being used wisely. Their track record is not that great.

At SeaTac airport, while getting on the train that takes you to various gates, I saw something I’ve seen dozens of times before. But never thought much of it. The train doors were about to close and I spotted a guy running as fast he could towards the vehicle in hopes he could squeeze inside before the doors shut. Unfortunately he just missed it. I swear his face smacked into the vehicle.
It was awkward
And some people chuckled.
All I could think at that moment was how I had never done anything like that. I’ve never run towards a train or after a bus that was about to leave.
My mindset has typically been to wait for the next one.
The question was why?

Jack Stine: We all deserve to fly first class
For the first time in my life, I flew First Class. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bragging about having ‘John Curley’ levels of income. I bought the ticket 4 weeks in advance a few days after the Boeing ‘huge gaping hole in the plane at 10,000 feet’ incident, when no one was flying. Because of this, the price was roughly $200.00. To be totally honest, it was amazing – my flight was delayed by an hour, when I went to the gate to check on the status of the flight, the gate attended offered me a dinner voucher in the airport to ease my dismay and distress.
On the flight, I noticed that the tray table was located in the armrest of the seat and could be deployed by pulling a simple lever. I was offered a beverage in a glass. When I was offered the selection for my in-flight meal, the flight attended said ‘Would you like the protein or the fruit and cheese plate?” I asked which one he liked, and he replied, “I will bring you both,’ which he promptly did and both were amazing. However, in the middle of the intoxicating experience of being treated like royalty – I was hit with a sudden wave of discontent. I can only equate it to the sensation Neo must have had when he was expelled from his goo-pod in the Matrix. A wave of terror and dread hit me at 10,000 feet, and the sound this wave made was, ‘everyone on this plane deserves this…’
Regardless of where you are on the plane. We all deserve more room to stretch out, we all deserve beverages served in a glass, we all deserve both the protein and fruit plate. Why? Because we pay for that service. Flying is an expensive experience no matter where you are in the plane – and being treated like a human being as opposed to Salmon being airdropped into a lake is a privilege, we should all be entitled to, regardless of the cost to the airline.
Sure, maybe some people would say ‘they need to make a profit and they do so by making the seats overpriced and expensive and having plastic cups and mini cokes, and carb sticks instead of fruit.
But wouldn’t more people fly more, and more often, if it was at least a pleasant experience, instead of an exercise in self-administered torture? I think so.
