Ep 214. Navigating Relationships with High Functioning Anxiety
Let’s face it; relationships bring up all our stuff, and there is no one more annoying in the whole world than the person you love the most.Navigating relationships with high–functioning anxiety is hard, not only for us, but for our partner too!Stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and trauma can hijack our emotions, while feeling anxious and on edge can mean we’re more likely to get triggered. If you’re busy and tired (and let’s be honest, who isn’t) it’s easy to lose your temper, experience dips in your mood and get into arguments.I’ve been with my partner for 13 years, and the first 3 years were hell because of my anxiety. We’ve seen FIVE different relationship therapists, and I’ve read countless books. These days, we’re in a MUCH better place, and we rarely argue (even with a 6-month-old in tow).In this podcast, I’m sharing my top tips for navigating relationships with high-functioning anxiety.Download the Hypnotherapy Pack here www.calmer-you.com/hypnotherapy-pack Hosted on Acast. Ep. 106 How to handle the inner critic
This week on the podcast I’m talking about the number one issue I see in my clients. The inner critic. It’s big. Huge. It’s that fault finding, nit-picking, brain-niggling, mean-ass inner critic.AKA ‘The shitty committee’.The inner mean girl (or boy).Judgey McJudgerson. You get the picture. It’s the internal monologue that’s pissing on your parade.Present every time you speak up in your family, try something new with your hair or attempt to write your bio on a dating app. There every time you fire up Zoom for a work meeting and have to stare at your own face for 50 minutes. And when things aren’t going to plan, the inner critic can get louder and arsier than ever. When you get iffy feedback from the work project you gave your all to.When you hear crickets after an audition or interview.Or when you miss your pre-paid yoga class because you hit snooze once too many.Queue an internal rant of Biblical proportions. Not even your ex who cheated on you got this much heat. Can you relate?Wouldn’t it be better to just try your best without all the internal chatter holding you back.In this solo episode of The Calmer You Podcast I’m sharing my top tips for handling the inner critic and moving forwards with more confidence in life.Don’t forget to grab your FREE confidence affirmations for kinder self-talk at www.calmer-you.com/confidence and you’ll also be the first to hear about the latest news, freebies and podcasts. Please subscribe to ‘The Calmer you Podcast’ in the podcast app or in iTunes to get the latest episodes and please leave me a review 🙂 Hosted on Acast. I'm welcoming you to the hundredth episode of this podcast! In this episode, I finally get around to talking about my experience that I had a few months ago, where I went on two different retreats to experience Ayahuasca medicine in South America.I can't quite believe I've carried on for so long. It's been an amazing experience for me to do this podcast. I started this podcast because it was actually a bit of a mission for me to overcome those last little bits of social anxiety and fears about speaking to people. Especially people I really look up to.I share about:* Why I went to the Amazon jungle and what it was like (spoiler: it was intense!)* What I learned from the plant medicine and what you can learn from it too* The risks involved and how I overcame my fears Download your FREE Calmer You Toolkit TranscriptHello, and welcome to the Calmer You podcast. I started this podcast because it was actually a bit of a mission for me to overcome those last little bits of social anxiety and fears about speaking to people. Especially people I really look up to. What it's meant doing this podcastIt's been such a great learning experience for that. Not only do I get to speak to people that I really admire and look up to, but, I'm also growing my own confidence by putting myself out there. It's been really valuable on so many levels. Thank you so much. Whether you're joining and listening to my podcast for the first time, or whether you've listened since day one, thank you so much for being here. I really appreciate all of your messages and all the times that you let me know that you're listening that it's that it's helped you. It really makes a difference to me. So thank you for that. Yes, it was a powerful experienceSo in this episode, I'm finally getting around to talking about my experience that I had back in December and January of 2019/20. Where I went on two different retreats to experience Ayahuasca medicine from South America. I have to say I've been putting this conversation off. I am feeling a certain amount of trepidation to even be talking about it because of the fact that it is not legal in the UK. It is legal in a lot of South American countries. There is definitely an aspect to it, which is pretty scary, a bit dangerous. And yet, it was such a powerful experience for me, and really did help me in lots of interesting ways. What you can expect from this episodeI'm going to describe a lot of things about the experience from why I decided to do it, what it was like being in the jungle, the things that I was afraid of, and the insights that I gained. DisclaimerI also want to share a disclaimer that I'm not suggesting that anyone else go out and have this experience. There are risks involved. Nicky is a transformational leader and facilitator, she has studiedintegrative counseling and macrobiotics, she is also a spiritual mentor andit's her mission in life to help all of us to break free from the confines ofour past traumas, ourselves defeating patterns, and our suffering. So that wecan realize and come home to who we are. So Nicky and I get into lots differenttopics, we start off by talking about trauma and how it can be the root of somany of our issues and how we can start to overcome the traumas that held usback. Nicky gives us her take on anxiety and where that comes from and what wecan do to start to manage our own anxiety. And Nicky advice definitely isn't the standard 3 tips to curing anxiety something that you might read day-to-day, it really does go very very deep and it's very very powerful. She shares some really moving personal stories about how she's healed her own trauma, how own experience of plant medicines, her own transformation and how she helps other people to transform. She also shares the incredible story about how she was 50000 words into writing her book, she had publishing deal with Hey house and how she actually scrapped the whole 50000 words and went on a different path and this is incredible for me, as someone who has written a book to let go of 50000 words, that's just terrifying to me. So I love this story with Nicky, it was incredibly inspiring. So I wouldlove to send some free resources to help you grow your confidence, boost yourself-esteem and calm your anxiety, if you want these freebies you can head overto my website; calmeryou.com/free, put your email address in there and I'llsend you those freebies right away. So, wetalked about this whole topic of change. We discussed what's known as thefertile void, and I love how Julia explains this and how we can cultivate thisin our lives, and it can help us to handle changes in our lives. I'm a coach and a hypnotherapist and the author of two books, The Anxiety Solution, and Brave New Girl, which is all about how to grow your confidence. So, today I'm going to be sharing with you a number of steps that I think if you follow them, will help you to be calm and your most confident self, to tap into the innate courage that is within you, and start to feel better about doing the things that you want to do, being you in the world, and going outside of your comfort zone. Journey to becomming a more confident personAnd so this is really an area that I'm passionate about talking about having to struggle with my own issues around confidence and self-esteem for so so long and going on a journey to become a more confident person. And I'm not saying that it's the case that we will just one day emerge like a butterfly out of the chrysalis a new person. But the reality is that it's a journey. It's a process. And little by little, we can start to make changes and we can grow. And we can discover more about what's possible for us and expand what is possible for us. So, I'm going to share with you eight steps for becoming your most confident self. Believe that you can changeSo,number one is to believe that you can change. And I can't tell you howimportant this step is. It sounds so simple, but actually is an incrediblypowerful shift that so many of us actually need to make before we can start tomake a change. Because when we are in a bad place, when we struggled withsomething for a long time, when we feel that we've tried a lot of things andthey haven't worked, it can be so easy to tell ourselves, that we are just notconfident people and we are going to be stuck, feeling this way forever andthere's not much we can do about it. And yet, and yet, the reality is thatchange is always possible. We are always changing your brain is alwayschanging. Depending on what you do, depending on what you think, what you focuson, those neurons are being created, old patterns of thinking, old neuralpathways are degrading as you use them less and less. And so [??? 02:18]neurological level it is possible to change. And there's that old classic quotefrom Henry Ford, “You believe you can or you believe you can't. And either way, you're right.” And this really encapsulates, even though it's quite a cheesyquote, by now, it will encapsulate this truth, that when we believe we canchange, it makes it easier to change. And so even if you are just experimenting Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 64. Well-being on a Budget in 9 Steps
This week I'm talking about well-being on a budget; because wellness is for everyone. I'm sharing simple, free or low-cost ways to boost your health and wellbeing including:-The brain tingling phenomena you need to know about-The next best thing to having therapy-How to get a lifetime of someone's wellbeing wisdom in your pocket-The cheap kitchen items that can help you to relaxDon't forget to grab your FREE anxiety-busting tool kit at www.calmer-you.com/free and you'll also be the first to hear about the latest news, freebies and podcasts. Please subscribe to ‘The Calmer you Podcast' in the podcast app in iTunes or on Spotify to get the latest episodes straight to your phone. Thanks so much for listening! Here are the 9 Steps: 1.Have a daily walk, get out in the park, join park run. Forest bathing and eco therapy are both really healing. 2.Water – many of us don’t drink enough. Get a refillable water bootle and carry it everywhere. 3.Exercise at home, you dont need to spend money on outfits you can work out in your pants (yay!), check out Youtube for tonnes of free workouts, Instagram, apps, check out Yoga with Adrienne. I loved the Sweat app by Kayla Itsines, or look into community yoga classes – often only £5. 4.Self help books – brilliant value for money. I have a free workbook with the audiobook version of Brave New Girl (find it on Audible) get together with friends for a book club or check out the ‘Shelf Help Book Club'. 5.Youtube ASMR which is calming videos designed to give you head tingles, Youtbube is full of guided meditation, or you can grab a free one by me from www.calmer-you.com/free 6.Massage – Get your partner to give you a massage or give one to yourself. Any oil could work, coconut, olive oil, sesame. Make the movement go up and down on limbs and around and around on joints. Make sweeping movements towards the heart. I love Facial massage and find it so calming, find instruction videos on Youtube. 7.Sleep – the ultimate wellbeing trick is to get more sleep. Go to be early, it’s the ultimate self care! If I’m feeling rubbish I’ll go to bed super early (like, 8:30pm!) and usually feel better the next day. 8.Cooking from scratch – especially if you are veggie or vegan – it’s easy to splurge loads of money on fancy ‘vegan or veggie’ foods. So instead, stick to whole grains and beans. Farmers markets can be cheaper than supermarkets as it hasn’t been flown in s refrigerated plane across the world and it’s likely to be local and seasonal. I recently discovered batch cooking and I have stuff in the freezer that’s quick and easy to cook instead of a takeaway. 9.Journalling – there’s almost nothing better than putting pen and paper. Although it's not a replacement for a therapist, it can be helpful putting feelings into words and ‘brain dumping’ so that you can switch off before bed. Hosted on Acast. TRANSCRIPT OF THE PODCASTChloe:Hello, and welcome to The Calmer You Podcast. This is your host, ChloeBrotheridge I am a coach and a hypnotherapist and an author of the anxietysolution, and the new book Brave New Girl, which was out a couple of weeks ago. This podcast is all about helping you to become your calmest, happiest, andmost confident self. And this week, I am interviewing someone that I havebasically followed for years and years, Madeleine Shaw. And it was such anexciting thing for me to speak to her because I remember something like maybefive or six years ago even having to go on a specific diet where I had to cutout certain food because I was having loads of, you know, food intolerances andIBS. And her website and her recipes was something that really helped me at thetime. And it was amazing to find someone that was making healthy eating cool. So, I love this conversation with Madeleine. We talked about the pressure toalways be doing more. And Madeleine talks about this really candidly, about howit can sometimes seem as though no matter what we've achieved, and matter howsuccessful we are, we never feel like we've done enough. And we really talkabout this phenomena and some ways to start to stop that from holding us back.We talked about the top foods to eat and avoid when you're managing anxiety. And she also shares with us her top tip for a daily practice that gives youmore time. Now, how many of us would like more time in the day? I know I would. This is amazing. And we also talked about IBS. Now it's incredibly common, andnot that much talked about. But we talk about it and talk about how common itis. And she has some ways that we can start to manage it. So,the reviews have started to come in from Brave New Girl for those that haveread it or listen to it on Audible. Just going to share with you a couple ofreviews from Amazon so you can learn a bit more. K said, “Reading Brave New goI can relate to everything and felt as though Chloe had access to my brain. Ihad seen all my doubts and issues I have with myself. I love the way sheexplains and gives you an exercise to do which really helps you to understand.”Donna said, “I absolutely loved Chloe’s new book and read it in a matter ofdays. Transcript:Hello and welcome to The Calmer You podcast. This is your host Chloe Brotheridge I am a coach and a hypnotherapist and I’m the author of The Anxiety Solution and Brave New Girl which is out now. Thank you so much for listening today this is a solo episode on a Brave New Girl edition of the podcast. So, I'm going to be talking about confidence which is a topic of my new book Brave New Girl and I'm going to talk about how confidence isn't necessarily all it seems. I'm going to be sharing some really simple ways to grow your confidence and I'm also going to be inviting you to join me in a challenge. I've already had loads of people joining and it's been so, so interesting to hear from you all so I'm really excited to share this with more people. As always I’m going to invite you to come over to calmeryou.com/free and grab your free anxiety busting tool kit if you haven't already. I've got amazing resources in there from worksheets to hypnotherapy Mp3's to affirmations, to access to our online community to get support from other people who are experiencing the same things as you. So, we look at people like Adele and we assume that because she's so amazing at what she does that she must be super confident but the truth is that Adele has been known to get so nervous before her performances that she actually throws up. We look at people like Mel Robbins. You might know Mel Robbins, her book that is most famous is called the 5 Second Rule and she did a TED talk in 2011 and during her TED talk she comes across as totally together, calm, confident and collected and yet she talks about how the reality was that during that TED talk she was having a panic attack the whole time. Even people like Michelle Obama and Meryl Streep have spoken about imposter syndrome and how they doubt themselves and how they sometimes they don’t feel good enough and so it's so easy to look at other people who appear to have it all together, who appear to have everything figured out and we assume that they do have it together and they've got it all figured out and that somehow they were just born confident and that it's actually just easy for them, it comes naturally for them and we could never do that we're not good enough for that. We struggle, we doubt ourselves, we don't feel confident, we get scared and so we can never do you know the things that we really want to do. It means we don't put ourselves out there, speak up or share our art and so this is just one of the ways that we really hold ourselves back. When we peel below the surface of people that appear really confident we learn actually what looks like confidence is often courage. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 56. Having the courage to speak up and make a change with Zanna Van Dijk
Extinction rebellion and David Attenborough have made climate change more and more in our minds, and alongside that, eco-anxiety is on the rise. This episode is about being brave enough to face things, to speak up about what we believe in (even in the face of criticism) and choosing action over anxiety. If you’re struggling with eco anxiety, I’m afraid this is not a podcast that is going to reassure you – but rather its a call to action for all of us to do what we can to change the situation. We can channel our anxiety into action and not just be paralysed by worry and feeling helpless. It takes courage to face this and to start to question our behaviours – no one is doing this perfectly so it’s really important to be kind to ourselves and know that it's not that we’ve been bad or done something wrong, but now is the time to educate ourselves and take action . I talk to Zanna about: -How to raise issues of the environment and having the courage to have difficult conversations (when maybe your friends and family don’t have the same views as you) -What action can we take to change things -Zanna shares a really interesting example of how she’s come under criticism and how she handles it Get 20% off Sweaty Betty when you click here and enter the code calmeryouBuy my new book Brave New Girl Don’t forget you can get a free anxiety busting toolkit at calmer-you.com/freeThanks so much for listening !Transcript:Chloe Brotheridge: So, hello and welcome to the Calmer You Podcast. I’m a hypnotherapist and a coach and I’m the author of Anxiety’s Solution and the new book Brave New Girl and this is a Brave New Girl edition of the podcast and it’s all about helping you to become your calmest happiest and most confident courageous self. So, this week I'm talking to Zanna Van Dijk who is someone that I wanted to talk to for quite some time and we've seen a lot of stuff in the press recently with Extinction Rebellion and David Attenborough talking a lot about climate change and so it’s more and more at the front of our minds and I'm also hearing a lot about eco anxiety and how that is on the rise as well. This podcast is really about being brave enough to face the reality of things and to speak up about what we believe in even in the face of criticism and it's really about how we can start to choose action over anxiety because so often we have a tendency to ruminate over things or get paralyzed by the enormity of an issue and we feel unable to actually do anything about it. This is really about how we can channel our care and our concern which is valid into the action to make a better change. If you are struggling with eco anxiety I'm afraid this podcast episode is not necessarily going to reassure you as such it's not going to say to you, you know everything is going to be okay just relax don't worry. I'm afraid that isn't the case so if you really are struggling with eco anxiety it might be that listening to this isn’t the right thing for you right now. This is a call to action for all of us and it's about what we can do to change the situation and how we can channel our anxiety into making a change not just getting paralyzed by fear and worry and feeling helpless.
