#75 - How to Tell Stories That People Will Listen To

Send us a Text Message.Humans are storytelling creatures. We relate through story, we're inspired by story, we're moved by story, and we experience life through story. From thousands of years ago to today - we've been sharing narrative with one another to come together. This episode is a reflection on that and some tactical info that may help your stories. Stories are important because that can improve conversation. And when conversation is improved, relationships are improved. And when relationships are improved, life is improved! #73 - Here Are Some of Humans' Greatest Quirks

Send us a Text Message.Ever thought to yourself, "Sheesh, he/she is complicated! I just don't understand them." I'm sure we've all thought this a time or two and we were totally right! Humans are very complicated. It's hard for us to understand each other - it's even harder for us to share with one another what makes it so hard for us to understand one another. In this episode I wanted to share some of my favorite HUMAN QUIRKS. These are things that make the human experience fun but also miserable. For instance, we're far less likely to reach out for help the more we need it. Or, we flock to digital platforms that promise connectedness yet are actual best friends are all ones we made in person. It's fun, it's complicated, and it's worth it. ALSO - I'm rebranding back to Talk to People Podcast. Hope you enjoy. Want to watch the video version? Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/@TheCommunicationMentorHave you enjoyed the podcast? #60 - What Does It Take to Be a Great Communicator?

We don't stumble into being good at things. Sure - there's raw talent. But, after a few curveballs get thrown into the mix then we need to reach beyond talent into experience and skill. Communication is one of the cornerstones of a happy life. Our business, personal, and relational growth is limited by our ability to articulate what we're experiencing. Opportunities slide away from us as we miss a chance to speak up. Relationships linger longer than needed since we don't know what words will get us out of them. In this episode, I want to explore what being a great communicator takes - and how to start from scratch. Have you enjoyed the podcast? #57 - How Talking in a Circle is Changing Prisons and Police Departments

Is there anything that beats a good talk with a friend or a loved one? Being able to laugh, share stories, and smile on how the universe has brought you two together. Now try doing that but with people who you don't like, or people you've never met before, or people who you've sworn as an enemy. Jared Seide is the Executive Director of Beyond Us and Them. He has designed, piloted and coordinated council-based programs in prisons, assisted living facilities, youth groups and a variety of non-profit, faith-based organizations, social service and law enforcement agencies. I have people who are very near to me that have been in prison or who are law enforcement officers so this conversation hit home for me. You know that feeling when you get to hang out with a friend that fills your cup? And y'all could be just chillin' yet you're still having a major blast? Well today we get to hear from one of those people. Trent Howard is a friend, a business owner, and he stood next to me in my wedding. #54 - Finding Community in a New Town with Pittsburgh Social Health [Haley Ingersoll]

More and more people are moving cities. This hasn't always been the case. Historically, we were born in an area, raised in an area, raised a family in that area, and then retired in that area. But this has gotten much different in the modern travel era. Spirit Airlines will give you a ticket for less than what a date night at a steakhouse will cost. Corporations are moving employees from one big city to the other. Tiktok and Instagram solo travelers are inspiring others to pull the plug and grab their carry-on. This conversation is about building community after a move - because more than likely, you'll make a move. I speak with Haley Ingersoll, the founder of Pittsburgh Social Health and a community manager by trade. Haley and I have similar stories, moving from one city to the next and then being tasked with finding friends, missing our old ones, and then figuring out to meet people. She built Pittsburgh Social Health which allows transplants who are either returning to Pittsburgh or fresh to Pittsburgh to find community and build much needed social support. Things you can expect to hear are: innovative strategies and heartfelt efforts to knit the fabric of a supportive communitythe power of local eventsthe role of digital platforms in fostering connectionsthe importance of embracing cultural diversityhow to leverage personal experiences to drive community initiativesthe significance of understanding local cultureand how small actions like neighborhood walks can lead to profound social engagement.Connect with Haley: https://twitter.com/Hingersoll5https://www.linkedin.com/in/haley-ingersoll7/Learn about Pittsburgh Social Health:https://www.instagram.com/pghsocialhealth/A quick note - moving is hard. And we often underestimate how much value the people have in our life that we're moving away from. Make sure to put in as much work as you can before you move, researching the area, finding things you could go to, and then making a plan. Also - ask your current network if they know anyone where you're moving and then see if you can get a warm hand-off. Doing these things will help set you up much better than going blind. And I strongly encourage you do these things!Have you enjoyed the podcast? #53 - How Online Sleuthing Is Impacting Your Relationships

I've always wondered how learning about people online affects our in-person relationship with them. It's a fascinating question that humans have recently had to answer. This episode will raise an eyebrow and leave you thinking about how you navigate your online social life. And it turns out that there is actually some big impacts with how we navigate getting to know people in-person and online. This was a fun episode. I used visual aids (that sorta failed while simultaneously panning out), I used the whiteboard, and I referenced anecdotes. Support me on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/talktopeoplepodcastSign up to the Social Fitness Lab newsletter here: https://socialfitnesslab.beehiiv.com/subscribeHere's the book Together by Dr. Vivek Murthy: https://www.amazon.com/Together-Healing-Connection-Sometimes-Lonely/dp/0062913301/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1D34WN34ZT4YS&keywords=together&qid=1705295295&sprefix=together%2Caps%2C112&sr=8-1Look at the GQ article I mentioned here: https://www.gq.com/story/sharing-is-not-caringHappy January!Have you enjoyed the podcast? #48 - Mastering Presentations: Three of My Favorite Tips

No matter who you are, you're going to have a moment where you're presenting your ideas. This could be at a business meeting, at a funeral, at a coach huddle, a small group, and the list goes on. Most people are afraid of public speaking, but there are things you can do to become better at it. When you're better, then you'll also become more confident. Confidence is the result of performing well in the past. At any given time, you can expect 20% of your audience to be checked out. This doesn't matter whether you're super funny, cute, or loud. There is psychological noise that prevents our attention - so we have to figure out how to be better. Not only for us, but also for our audience. If you learn anything from this, learn how to be gracious to your audience. There's a lot going on in our little heads, let's speak accordingly. Have you enjoyed the podcast? #41 - Jared Auten: The Art of Compassionate Communication, Insights from a Crisis Line Director

Jared Auten, LMSW, is the Crisis Line Director at HeadQuarters Kansas in Lawrence, KS. His work currently focuses on crisis center operations and 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline implementation and integration in Kansas. I view people who answer calls on the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline as the Navy Seals of communication. Their ability to listen, ask questions, help search through intense emotion, and collaboratively bring someone to a safer place is incredible. Due to this - I spent a lot of this episode asking about ways to employ these conversational and social skills in our everyday relationships and how to communicate crises. I also ask about how to navigate the topic of suicide with a loved one. When Jared was a teenager, he lost his father to suicide, so his perspective covers both a suicide prevention professional and a suicide loss survivor. Expect to hear about: the phenomenon of over-identifying with a narrativehow anonymity affects digital social situationswhy you should be direct when talking about suicidewhy it can be easy to struggle with the one-sided nature of therapynavigating the pressure of vulnerabilitywhy some people have FOMO when it comes to peoplea useful tip to navigate how many questions to askhow to talk to a loved one about suicide active listening tips (minimal encouragers, reflections, prompts)and the common mistake people make when someone tells them they're considering taking their own life. If you have recently had thoughts of taking your own life, call 988. #40 - Nana Amfo: Here's How to Talk to People at the Bar

The three most common places people meet others (including their romantic partners) are church, work, and the bar. So, more than likely, you may go out to a bar. But what are you supposed to do when you're there? How do you meet people? How do you make friends? What do you avoid?Well I don't know the answer to these questions. I am so uneducated when it comes to navigating nightlife, but Nana has some ideas. Nana Amfo is a cohost for the CruiseLine Podcast and the Creative Director and Cofounder of the fast growing fashion and lifestyle brand Alpha Gang. He is a good person to talk to about this because he spends a lot of time reflecting on popular culture and what resonates with the general public. In this episode expect to learn about: - how to navigate nightlife - why people should or shouldn’t go out- the importance of hearing from God- how to balance having a lot of acquaintances but few friends- the impact alcohol has on social situations- and the power of being yourself.Remember to be yourself and that quantity of relationships matters much less than quality.Cruise Line Podcast: https://cruiselinepodcast.buzzsprout.com/Instagram: https://instagram.com/nanaamfo_?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==YouTube: https://youtu.be/vV-uBM7vld4?si=KsOh-bPy0oYkEjcv#personaldevelopment #nightlife #communication Have you enjoyed the podcast? #39 - Santiago Paredes: How to Find Friends After Moving to a New City

Santiago Paredes is a friend, inspiration, and leader. After traveling across the country with him, I decided we needed to run it back and reflect on his one-year anniversary of living in a new city. This is a helpful episode because we answer the question: how do I make friends when I move to a new city? Moving is one of the biggest causes of loneliness, we move away from our social support and they're we're faced with the daunting task of creating a new network. Sure, we can call our people back at home, but what about all the people all around us? How do we get to connect with them? Great question...In this episode you can expect to hear: how to build community after moving awaya social checklist of things to do after you move inwhy it's okay if your social health isn't 100%how to create a culture of vulnerability in your relationshipwhether you should talk about your sexual past in a new relationshiphow it feels to navigate divorcewhy gossiping is so fun yet not goodwhat it means to cover as a leaderand why everyone should listen to episode #17If you just moved to a new city, don't get overwhelmed. Before you know it, you'll be able to name the cities, restaurants, and neighbors. Take it day by day, and focus on showing up to as many things as you can. Comfort zones are cool and all but sometimes they need to be pushed. And I think establishing yourself socially in a new city is one of those times. Have you enjoyed the podcast? #38 - Karista Paredes: How to Recognize an Abusive Relationship and Take Action

Karista Paredes is a soon-to-be published author, full-time Kids Pastor, and a community leader. She is an exemplar of how vulnerability can lead to breakthrough. Oftentimes on this podcast we talk about the importance of relationships. What we rarely touch on is what happens when relationships go wrong. Typically, we want to hide all of our relational problems, stow them away and pretend that everything is copacetic. But doing this will hurt us, our family, and prevent us from healing. In this episode, you can expect to hear: what to do when a relationship turns abusivewhy people stay in abusive relationshipsindicators that you should watch out forthe psychology behind why people return to toxic relationshipshow to let others into your life to help you assess your situationhow to make a strategy of leaving an abusive relationshipwhy sharing your story gives you and others powerthe key to preserving your self-worthand the one piece of advice Karista would give her younger self. THANK YOU for being here. Thanks again to Karista for sharing her story. Remember, life is better when we talk to people and live socially connected. #36 - Jeremy Newman: Creating an Adventurous Life (One Conversation at a Time)

Jeremy Newman is an educator, business owner, pilot, endurance athlete, and adventurer. He grew up in North Dakota, traveled the world, and found his way to Kansas. Growing up in a foster home, Jeremy learned how to make deep connections in a loving yet ever-changing family. This episode was really important to me because I believe that most of our social confidence starts in our family. When we're young, we get to see how our parents treat each other, we learn how to make friends with siblings, and we interact with all different types of personalities at family events.  Being a part of the foster system could be a setback for some, but it made Jeremy more attuned to the importance of connection. In this episode you can expect to hear about: Jeremy's adoption storyhow he decided to move across the worldwhat inspired him to become a teacherhow to create adventure in your own backyardwhy language limits our worldone way to become more confident in classand what I think the podcast adventure has been like so far. Family is a gift. Sean Richards is a servant leader, a Sr. Account Manager with The Purpose Company, and the Lead Pastor at Open Door Church.Sean is wired towards people. Rather than finding meaning in money, career, or entertainment, he believes that focusing on relationships results in a fulfilled life. With a background in communication and business, he is fascinated by the psychology of the individual and how humans relate to each other. Sean will contribute a lot to the field of social connection and bringing others together. I'm grateful that I was able to get him on the podcast to reflect on what matters in relationships, how to improve the ones we're in, and the joy of being passionate about people. In this episode, we discuss many things, including: how to navigate disagreement in relationshipsthe power of intellectual hospitalitythe hardwire nature of people that leads them to connect with otherswhen to call yourself an expertwhy writing a book isn't always the answer to adding valuewhat relational humility looks like when it's showcased wellthe power of critical thinkinghow to find mentorship, even if it isn't easyI hope this episode encourages you to relentlessly find a mentor. Ryan Walker is a friend and the Executive Director at Pioneer Ridge Independent Living. He is an active member of Morning Soccer Pickup (MSP) and a fan of people, cinema, and chicken pot pie.We live in an increasingly isolated world and Ryan is a great example of someone who is bucking that trend. With an analytical approach, he reverse engineered what he needed in his life and the answer was community. He showcases curiosity and intrigue with the people around him (which is one of my favorite traits that humans have).Community matters, and it has leveled up his life just like so many others'. This was a super fun episode. We laughed, theorized, and even came up with some pretty good conclusions regarding AI's impact on human interaction. In this episode we talk about:the power of self-deprecating humorwhy you should use the triple filter testone indicator for a happy relationshipwhat to do when you feel burdened by curiositythe moment Ryan decided to find communitythe power of critical thinkingwhat we would do if we met Messihow to respond to apathy from othersAI's impact on building relationshipswhere we see technology impacting our social world in 10 years. Thanks for listening. #30 - My Mom: Opening Up To Others Saved My Life

Allow me to introduce you all to one of my favorite people, my mom (Kim Miller). If you want to hear someone who is a paragon of kindness, wisdom, and endurance, then you came to the right place. My mom has exemplified work ethic, determination, and imagination. But, one of the things we focus most on in this episode is how she showcased to me the importance of living your life with supportive people around you. Kim is an active member of Al-Anon, NAMI, and Breast Cancer Support Groups. When I was a kid, I saw her choose to spend her time going to groups. Choosing to spend time around people definitely rubbed off on me.The past year has been quite tough for our family, especially my mom. In January we learned that she had cancer in several parts of her body, including her skull. It's been incredibly scary, draining, and overwhelming. But it's given me motivation to work on the podcast because she listens to it while she's resting. And if I can't be there in person to comfort her then the least I can do is be in her ears. In this episode we talk about:the power of support groupshow to grieve as a family my mom's reaction when she was diagnosed with cancerwhy talking about bad news is a tricky thingwhat I think about AA and Al-Anonour experience with schizophreniawhy friends and family of alcoholics need communityhow wrapping words around cancer helps everyone involved.Keep your head up. #28 - Paige Freeman: Unlocking the Power of Intercultural Communication

Paige Freeman, a Louisville, Kentucky native, graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Communication degree, went over to University of Mississippi for a master's degree in Higher Ed, and is now a doctoral student at the University of Kansas for Higher Education Administration. Paige currently serves as the Director of Student Programs with the KU Alumni Association. She takes pride in being an educator, dreamer, and joy curator who uses her voice and platform to "make academic and social experiences educationally rewarding" for all students navigating their collegiate careers that are culturally centered and meet all students' needs.  Paige and I have a lot in common. For instance, we both love people and we're both dreamers. But what struck me most about Paige was her ability to articulate the power of communication and how it brings people together who don't have a lot in common.Communication is the epitome of a cultural experience. Where you grow up determines what words you use, how fast you talk, the way you enunciate, how loudly you speak, if you're a close-talker or not, and the list goes on. This episode is a great example of exploring something that we all deal with - yet don't often talk about.  In this episode you'll hear about:codeswitching in daily conversationsthe importance of emotional intelligence and expressionwhy people change their accentswhy openness doesn't always mean vulnerabilitythe power of listeninghow to tap into relational diversity the benefits of racial affinity groupsone tip for extraverts to become better communicatorshow to overcome rejection even if it means changing your pathwhat impact your culture has on the way you communicateEPISODE LINKS: Atlas of the Heart by Brene BrownWhy Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? The Talk to People Podcast is a resource for personal development and building meaningful relationships. #26 - Matt Pool: Building a Community Culture Beyond Business Doors

Matt Pool is an owner of Restaurant, Pub, & Games (RPG) in Lawrence, KS. Alongside three other owners, Matt opened up RPG six months before the COVID pandemic. It quickly became a favorite place for people to gather, eat a meal, and play a board game. I reached out to Matt because I was fascinated with RPG's business model of creating a safe space for community that connected people from various backgrounds. After going there myself, I was struck by how seriously RPG backed up their mission. I talked with strangers, laughed a ton, and left feeling more fulfilled. It reminded me how important being socially connected was. RPG will be permanently closing their doors on June 30th, 2023. As RPG closes their business doors, the culture they've created grows stronger. More and more people are sharing stories of life change they experienced while gathering with their friends and soon-to-be-friends at RPG.  Culture change takes a long time - but it is so worth it. As you listen to this conversation, be reminded of your ability to build a community that makes those around you better. In this episode you can expect to hear about: how RPG opened and was the biggest ribbon cuttingthe stories that almost made us cry on the podcasthow many drinks I spilled as a server and my appreciation for service staffwhy a community is a product of culture - good or badwhat made RPG introduce a $15/hr minimum wagethe moment they decided to permanently closeand how you can build a community of people (it's not too tricky). EPISODE LINKS:https://www.instagram.com/rpglawrence/https://www.facebook.com/RPGLawrencehttps://rpglawrence.com/The Talk to People Podcast is a resource for personal development and building meaningful relationships. #25 - Mia Santarelli: The Importance of an Intergenerational Community

Mia Santarelli is a street photographer, the Activity Director at Pioneer Ridge Independent Living, and the founder of the Joyful Palette Project. I've talked on this podcast a lot about the importance of social connection. As we age, being socially connected gets more difficult. Our bodies don't want to show up to the sports leagues, we aren't able to drive to church as well, and we retire from our workplace which removes us from our coworkers and routine. And, as we begin to lose access to social connection, we are also full of the most stories, wisdom, and experience. This is why I think it was really important for me to have Mia on as a guest. For the past three years, she has worked hand-in-hand with seniors to create fun and engaging activities that enrich life and build community. I firmly believe that the best community you could build is an intergenerational community. A community that exemplifies several different walks of life - those who've been there before, those who are currently there, and those who are on their way. If you're not in a position of learning from those who are much older than you, I would strongly encourage you to seek that out. In this conversation, you can expect to hear: great questions to ask older adults in your lifethe power of narrative medicinehow community is built through artwhy I think that everyone should be mentoring someoneand something that we all have and it costs us little, but will bless someone else A LOT. Below is a blurb that I had ChatGPT write. #24 - Kevin Tietz: Embrace Failure & Embrace Growth, You're Michelangelo's David

Kevin has served as Director for Young Life College at the University of Kansas for 13 years. His passion is to build meaningful relationships with college students to help them encounter Jesus Christ, while also developing others to do the same. When I first met Kevin, I was taken by his ability to make people (me at the time) feel heard and valued. He strives to help people discover themselves, and oftentimes, that means A LOT OF LISTENING. This is a rare skill - but it's an important one.I hear people talk about college as being the glory days. While this can be the case, I also know that college is a time where people struggle with immense homesickness, peer pressure, overwhelming stress about a confusing professional future, and mental health crises. I am encouraged by people who care for college students because I was once a college student, and I know first-hand that the need for an encouraging community, wise friends, and thoughtful conversation is immense.Listen out for: how to decide on a tough decision that will affect your futurewhy your failures help you look like Michelangelo's Davidhow to create a culture that doesn't exist or change an existing onewhy you should be a part of a multigenerational communityand a funny story where I chickened out of something and had to go back and own up to it.Want to contact Kevin? #21 - Keontay Gaines: Ever Wondered What Happens When Drive, Opportunity, and Self-Belief Collide?

Keontay Gaines is the Assistant Director of Student Athlete Development at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Keontay and I met in Lawrence, KS, where we quickly bonded over a fascination of the people around us. After growing up in inner-city Baltimore, Keontay went on to play college football, build a family, and grab several degrees along the way. He is a great example of someone who did not have opportunity immediately spelled out for him, so he had to find ways to create it. From creating his own snack resale business to telling stories that inspire those around him, his timeline began to take off. In this conversation, we cover a bunch of topics, including: how Keontay discovered football and his biggest sports failure of his career, the most important book he read that ended up changing his life, what Keontay created (snack biz) to learn how to work with people as a kid, why being alone is super bad, and how to build yourself up by choosing the correct people to be in your inner environment. I was encouraged to lean further into self-belief, think less of waiting on opportunity but think more of creating it, put people around me who have a drive to love the people around them, and place a value on resilience. Episode Links: BOOKS MENTIONEDThe Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark DeMoss: https://amzn.to/44Xn8F8The Art of Dealing with People by Les Giblin: https://amzn.to/42SgGNNRich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki: https://amzn.to/3M87BtoLetters from a Stoic by Seneca: https://amzn.to/3O9UJ8JThe Overthinking Cure by Nick Trenton: https://amzn.to/42HBCYkCrazy Faith by Michael Todd: https://amzn.to/3BpVGlLOutliers by Malcom Gladwell: https://amzn.to/3BpPQknThe Way of the Seal by Mark Divine and Allyson Edelhertz Machate: https://amzn.to/3O8QbiUYou Can You Will by Joel Osteen: https://amzn.to/450speTInstagram: taygaines007TikTok: taygaines007Support the showHave you enjoyed the podcast? #20 - Annie Miller: Communication Tips for a Healthy and Connected Relationship

Annie Miller is a former teacher of relational communication, an expert of belongingness, and an all-around all-star. That basketball game ended up being our first unofficial date - and a few years later we were finding someone to dogsit our golden retriever while we were getting married. In this episode we talk about the importance of healthy communication in romantic relationships, how sibling relationships contribute to belongingness, the need for consistent and repeated social interactions, why I always get food envy yet still order the wrong food, how to become more emotionally agile, and what our FAVORITE date has been in the past 12 months. Annie is the best - she has been the brains and beauty of this whole podcast operation. If you love Annie, then you'll love this conversation. Damon Parker spent 21 years as a teacher and coach in both Missouri and Kansas. He has coached his wrestling teams to 4 Kansas state championships. Since 2011, Coach Parker has received Teacher of the Year honors on 4 occasions and is the 6-time Kansas Coach of the Year. In addition, Damon is a professional speaker who has given presentations to hundreds of audiences nationwide. In March of 2021, something happened that changed Coach Parker's trajectory. #18 - Scott Base: How Self-Defense Classes Are Bringing Communities Together

Scott Base is a Martial Arts Instructor for Prime Martial Arts. What I like most about Scott is his ability to work with the community, be it via teaching a group of realtors self-defense or hosting a martial arts tournament for kids. In the past five years, Prime Martial Arts has hosted over 100 free self-defense classes for the Lawrence community. The more I think about this, the more I realize how cool it is to empower people and provide them with skills they need to feel safe in their daily lives. In this episode we talk about a variety of things, from learning how to use nunchucks to the most important things to know if you need to defend yourself. In addition, I am fascinated by Scott's ability to build community around martial arts - so I ask questions about that. Through mentoring and coaching, Scott has built a positive culture where relationships are built and people are growing.Shout out to everyone who is tuning in - and keep kicking butt. Support the showHave you enjoyed the podcast? #13 - Rick Cagan: Breaking the Stigma, Insights from a Mental Health Advocate

Rick served as Executive Director for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Kansas from 2005-2018. Most recently, he directed the Behavioral Health Tobacco Project for NAMI Kansas from 2016-2022. He spent 27 years in advocacy and human services in Virginia.  Rick has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Princeton University and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is a graduate of the Sunflower Advocacy Fellowship, the Kansas Health Foundation Fellows VIII, and the Johnson and Johnson Head Start Management Fellows Program at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA.  He is a recipient of the Samuel Crumbine Medal for Meritorious Service presented by the Kansas Public Health Association.  Currently retired from paid work, he continues voluntary work related to mental health, criminal justice, and tobacco cessation. This is an important episode to me because my family has dealt first hand with severe mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. I am grateful for the conversations I've had with Rick and the work he has done to improve Kansas regarding mental health services. If you or a loved one you know is struggling with mental health, I would strongly urge you to look into NAMI. There are local chapters everywhere and it has been a lifegiving resource for my family. The sooner illnesses are treated, the better the outcomes. It is hard to articulate the feelings of helplessness you experience when a loved one is in a mental health crisis. I hope this episode finds seeking families just in time. EPISODE LINKS: National Alliance on Mental Illness: https://nami.org/HomeI'm Not Sick and I Don't Need Help by Dr. Xavier Amador: https://amzn.to/3JMuWQrCrazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness by Pete Earley: https://amzn.to/3FzWjvLWhat is anosognosia? https://www.treatmentadvocacycenter.org/key-issues/anosognosiaThe NAMI hotline: 1-800-950-NAMI (6264)Support the showHave you enjoyed the podcast? #10 - Pat Brown: Championing Financial Education for Student Athletes

Pat Brown is an investment advisor and a former football player who has a heart for teaching financial literacy to student athletes. While playing for the University of Kansas, Pat set the university record and tied the NCAA record for most pick 6's by a linebacker in a game. He now brings the same level of dedication and focus to his work in the financial industry. Pat is a kind individual who is highly engaged with the community. He uses his natural charisma and expertise in finance to educate young athletes on how to manage their money and plan for their future. I'm sure we've all seen the documentaries of professional athletes going broke. Well, Pat aims to teach athletes sound financial principles in hopes of preventing another hero to zero story. We call that the Pat Brown effect! Some of the things we talk about include Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), how to find a good team to handle finances, cryptocurrency, Pat's first ever investment, why you should stay away from investing in a restaurant (most of the time), and what it felt like to set a university record.
