#4 El Niños - El Reno Commentary
In This Episode
Brought to you by CameraEasy.ca. Anyone can take great photos. Visit cameraeasy.ca and use coupon code FB30OFF to get 30% off at checkout.
Guest: Peter Slack
On May 31 2013 a very well forecast tornado event happened outside Oklahoma City near the community of El Reno. This day was special and tragic at the same time. Not only was this the largest tornado ever recorded, but due to its forecastability and proximity to Norman Oklahoma, it was also the most researched and documented tornado in history.
Sadly, the day took a tragic turn when 9 people were killed, including 4 storm chasers. Three of these chasers were Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young who made up the highly respected TWISTEX team. By anyones standards Tim Samaras would have been considered as a safe and experienced chaser. NOBODY expected Tim to be among the first storm chasers killed while chasing. It was unfathomable.
As mentioned, the forecast was consistent and quite scary. In fact, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma did such an amazing job of forecasting that when we looked at the models the day before and looked at the SPC’s forecast, we put a pin in the map at El Reno and actually spent the night prior to the tornado in a motel in the town.
The tornado ended up being 2.6 miles wide at its peak and there were radar indicated winds which peaked at almost 300 MILES PER Hour. Crazy. Officially the tornado was given a hotly debated rating of EF3 since after all, the EF scale is a measure of damage and not wind speed. Either way it was intense, dangerous and a day that none of us will ever forget.
For this episode, we have brought together everyone who was in our truck that day including the director of photography Peter Slack who was shooting the entire time and documenting our experience with El Reno and what could easily have been the end of our lives.
Here is how this commentary is going to work. We are going to play the video that Peter shot that day from the back seat of Flash, the Tornado Truck. I will stop the video at key decision making points and we will discuss our thoughts, and share some insight as to how and why we made the decisions we did. Facilitating the process will be our good friend Nick Schenher (NicktheBody) who was watching all of this unfold on our live stream. So if you would like to watch the video and see what we are seeing during this commentary, head on over to YouTube and visit my YouTube page by searching for Greg Johnson Tornado Hunter. You will find the El Reno video and you can watch and pause when needed.

Jim Williams created HurricaneCity in 1997. One reason for the name HurricaneCity are the predictions made at the beginning of each hurricane season for the top cities & Islands that Jim thinks are at high risk based on a simple mathematical formula. Since Jim started making city predictions in 2003 he has nailed at least 4 to 6 cities out of 20 each year that ended up getting hit.
Jim runs a paving business in South Florida since 1987 and tracks hurricanes with statistical input as a hobby since the late 1970s, and holds no meteorology degree.

Our Guests
Bill Ford and Mike Prendergast of Storm Warriors
Bill Ford has been tracking down tornadoes and helping with disaster relief for three decades. After witnessing the aftermath of the 1999 Moore Oklahoma tornado, Bill has been stopping and giving assistance to those affected by storms. He was involved in the recovery from Rita, Katrina, and Sandy hurricanes as well as many tornado aftermaths in Texas and Oklahoma.
Bill believes, “No one should ever die from a tornado.” He helps bring advanced warning to communities by providing ‘ground truth’ to the National Weather Service and other news media. Bill has also been a part of helping train volunteer fire fighters, county sheriff and community leaders on how to give advanced warning. In addition, helping family’s community organizations and schools take responsibility through awareness and education through their “Know Where To Go” campaign.
Born and bred in Texas, Mike Prendergast first gained a fascination with all things extreme weather when he experienced the power of a Category 3 Hurricane Alicia in 1983 as the eye wall passed over his childhood home. He has been enamored with weather ever since and in particular tornadoes.
His heart for serving others spills over into storm chasing. While he enjoys seeing the power of the storm, he hates to see communities get ravaged. After years of asking God why he has this fascination with something that causes so much pain and destruction, He has shown Mike the good in being able to warn others of the impending storm, assist those that need it most and help restore those communities affected.

William Cole, meteorologist and creator of Oklahoma Weather Tracker TV.
Oklahoma Weather Tracker TV was founded in 2009 as OklahomaWeatherTracker.com. Founder and Chief Meteorologist William Cole noticed a lack of LIVE online weather information available in Oklahoma. William made it his goal to change that and OklahomaWeatherTracker.com was launched as a simple and easy to navigate website with minimal advertisements featuring an abundance of Live Oklahoma weather information such as Live Radars, Live Conditions, a Live Blog, Forecasts and much more. OklahomaWeatherTracker.com has generated a huge following on Facebook and Twitter over the years. The Oklahoma Weather Tracker mobile app was created on the same principles; an easy to naviagate app that puts Live Oklahoma weather information at the finger tips of Oklahoman's.
In late March of 2016 Oklahoma Weather Tracker TV became available nationwide on Apple TV, Roku and Google Chromecast also on Amazon Fire TV.

Tornado Trackers was founded in May 2013 when three friends created a joint twitter account to keep friends and family updated on chases.
Since then, all three have worked together to maintain Tornado Trackers, both in the field and through social media, with the simple goal of sharing their enthusiasm for all things weather. At the heart of what they do lies a complete fascination with storms and a genuine excitement to be a part of the larger community of weather fanatics worldwide.
Their footage has been broadcast on many networks including ABC, NBC, CBS, The Weather Channel, CNN and The National Geographic. Was recently identified by WIRED magazine as one of the top storm chasers to follow on Twitter.

Our Guest
Ross Ellet, Toledo TV Meteorologist at 13ABC and Storm/Aurora Photographer
October of 2005, I got my first chance to be on air. Along with working weekends I also did some storm chasing for the station during the week all while finishing up my degree at Purdue. In early June of 2007 I accepted a Morning Meteorologist position at WOAY in Oak Hill, West Virginia. Just 3 months later I became one the youngest Chief Meteorologists in the country after I was promoted. A short time later I was awarded the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation from the American Meteorology Society. In November of 2008 I started a new adventure in tornado alley. I accepted a Weekend Meteorologist position at KHBS/KHOG (40/29 in Fort Smith/Rogers, AR). I enjoyed my time in Arkansas in front and away from the camera, but it is was time to get back to my roots in the Midwest. I joined the 13ABC Weather Team in Toledo Ohio during the summer of 2012 and love the forecasting challenges of the Great Lakes

Physicist Edward F. Shaver is the Chief Technology Officer of Entropy. Prior to joining Entropy, Mr. Shaver led development and production for the ThunderBolt and SkyScan products. The SkyScan product, introduced in 1995, pioneered the industry as the first commercially viable hand-held lightning detector. The ThunderBolt product, introduce in 2003, was the first hand-held product capable of tracking the motion of full thunderstorms, introducing the ability to offer Estimated Time of Arrival for storm activity at a particular location. In 2012, Mr. Shaver developed the StormVector Area Warning System, which used wireless communication to build auto-meshing networked storm warning alert beacons of unlimited size. This allowed for the implementation of the ThunderBolt storm warning in large industrial facilities, college campuses, and even areas the size of small cities. Mr. Shaver was also part of the development and manufacturing design team for the P5 Personal Lightning Detector for Sky Scan Technologies.
