Ruari Fairbairns
How does Alcohol affect your running? Here to tell us how is co-founder of One Year No Beer, Podcaster and Author of the Best Seller '28 Day Alcohol Free Challenge' - Ruari Fairbairns.Ruari is a former oil broker from London, who listened to the whisper in his mind that said the amount of alcohol he was consuming was holding him back.In the UK many people still find it difficult to cut back on drinks because of the social aspect. We still live in a society that says "Alcohol is amazing!" "It's so much fun!" "Come to the pub!" despite us knowing the damaging effects on our health. The reality is, alcohol makes us feel anxious, tired and sluggish and stops us from being the optimal versions of ourselves.Ruari has the occasional glass, so he's not here to preach "never drink again", but he will leave you with things to think about...especially when it comes to feeling good enough to go for a run.

John McAvoy
Today’s guest John McAvoy is a Nike Athlete and a motivational speaker who inspires young people to live a good, and honest life. However, John’s story is probably unlike anything you’ve heard before…When John was young, he grew up in an environment of organised crime, leading to a life of armed robbery, and 10 years behind bars at a high-security prison. His “role models” back in the day, led him to believe being behind bars was “just a way of life”. Everything was about money, the acquisition of wealth and disobeying authority. They told him that if he went to prison and started behaving, then the system had got him. However, whilst in his cell John decided he wanted to feel like a proper human being so he decided to spend his days educating himself by reading books from the prison librarian, and started exercising one push-up at a time…John’s new exercise regime led him to break both British and World records whilst in prison, and in turn he's found redemption through the power of sport. He now lives in the Alps and has forged a life as an endurance athlete and speaker who is committed to using his story of rehabilitation to help and inspire others to change their lives for the better. In his own words, John feels completely detached from who he was in the past, and that is in itself, is a very moving story."The important thing is not what one is born with but what use one makes of that equipment" - AdlerLooking to buy a RunPod t-shirt?: Go here: Linktr.ee/runpod

Gary McKee - 'The Marathon Man'
In today’s episode, we’re joined by Gary McKee 'The Marathon Man’.
Gary has been fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support for almost 20 years. He’s cycled through Brazil, climbed Kilimanjaro, trekked through New Zealand, walked across hot coals and rowed the equivalent distance of the English Channel and then back…And that’s not all!
In 2021 to celebrate Macmillan’s 110th birthday, Gary ran 110 marathons in 110 days. So for 2022 he had his sights set on a bigger goal - to run 365 Marathons in 365 Days!
With the support of his family, friends, and community, Gary is changing many lives for people affected by cancer!
What a way to end the year!
Join us in congratulating Gary on such an incredible achievement, and if you have £1 or £100, whatever you can donate his Just Giving page is here:

Bonus Episode: Meet the RunPod Run Club - Lorna Hay
We have brilliant guests on 'Meet the RunPod Run Club', and today we’re joined by Lorna Hay who has an important message about Running Anemia to share with us.
Having previously run marathons and being at the top of her running game, Lorna found herself suddenly struggling to run. She was feeling tired, and there was a metallic taste in her mouth... Could it be Covid? What could it be? She asked herself, as she booked in with her GP…
After tests, and ruling out every possibility, she soon found out she had dangerously low iron levels, a bad iron deficiency you will know as - Anemia. Runners Anemia! Something that is common in the running community.
An interesting listen for everyone - this is something to think about, especially if you’re an avid runner.

Bonus Episode: Meet the RunPod Run Club - Pete Riddleston
On today’s episode of Meet the RunPod Run Club, we’re joined by the lovely Pete Riddleston.
Like the majority of people, Pete goes running to improve his mental clarity, and to help keep the weight of those 'grey clouds' at a comfortable distance.
Think about it: up until this point, you’ve survived everything life has thrown at you. Owning your mental health, and not letting it define you, is the best thing you can do. No one asks for their struggles, and our lives change all the time. That’s a fact.
Taking full responsibility for your mind is something we should all do, and running is a great place to start.
Keep running, and keep going - it will pass.

Gareth Thomas CBE
Today we are joined by someone who is quite frankly, a Rugby Legend - Gareth Thomas CBE!
One of the many ways Gareth keeps fit is going for a run. It’s the one time he really lives in the NOW, and if he could live his whole life how he feels when he’s running he certainly would want to.
When he’s not smashing his running PB he’s smashing the stigma attached to HIV along with the amazing people behind Tackle HIV. In fact this episode is being recorded in New York, just a day before Gareth jumps on the microphone to do a TED Talk about Stigma and Shame - something Gareth has had to learn to navigate.
You’re about to learn that imagination is key when it comes to running, and also there’s a lot of good in the running community!
HIV is nothing to be ashamed of

Sally Ann Matthews
When she’s not pulling off a stellar performance on Coronation Street, you can find Jenny Bradley aka Sally Ann Matthews pulling on her activewear and going for a run.
Weeks before her 50th Birthday Sal decided that it was time to take fitness a bit more seriously and started doing couch to 5k. It started with a few walking breaks but then before she knew it she could run for 50 minutes without stopping! Sal loved running so much that she made it her goal to do 50 5ks in her 50th year – an impressive challenge her social media following has got behind. Since her love for running started, Sal’s discovered: park runs, a good routine (that factors in washing her hair) and some sage advice that will take you those next steps forwards: push on, relax your shoulders and use your legs! < you heard the lady!

Geoff Wightman
Looking for a pep in your step? You’re in luck! Today's guest on RunPod is Geoff Wightman – a 2.13.17 marathon runner, commentator, and coach to his son Jake Wightman (who is the second fastest Briton EVER at 1500m)!
Geoff has been running since he was in Cubs, it’s how he met his wife, what all his family does, and in his words is “the best, simplest, nicest and healthiest activity you can do”.
So should you carry water when you’re running? When should you have some rest? What’s the optimum amount of sleep you need before a race? And are Energy Gels actually a good idea? These are the kind of questions we’re asking so you’re prepared for any Race Day or run you’re going on.
As Geoff says, “98% of starters do make it to the finish” – so ignore your doubts, get out there, and just concentrate on having good form! You can do it!

Akram Shalabi
In this episode, you’re going to be put through your paces, with special guest Akram Shalabi!
Akram’s running story is a brilliant one, and the phrase “he’s a natural” definitely springs to mind.
Akram hadn’t done much running since he was younger (maybe 100 and 400-metre sprints), but when a friend had to drop out of the Berlin Marathon he took their place and did the whole thing in 3 hrs 10 minutes with NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER.
In the last 7 years Akram has gone on to do 100 marathons, and now sacrifices his race for other people because he is officially known as a ‘pacer’ - one of those lovely people who keep you motivated, and run beside you until you reach the finish line! So if you’re looking for the motivation to push yourself to the end of your run today, Akram is your guy.

Mark Heyes
Mark Heyes, Jenni’s long-time friend and the glue of ITV’s Lorraine is our amazing guest of the week. If anyone is going to bring you your daily dose of positive energy, and recommend you some nice athleisure, it’s him.
Mark has come a long way since faking sick notes in PE, and now really enjoys running NAKED (not that kind of naked) at 6 am along the River Thames. He’s even into Marathons… but that may be because his inner Mariah Carey loves people screaming his name.
If you’re looking to train your abs, as well as your legs - you’ll love this one. Mark is hilarious!

Brian Wood MC
On RunPod we discuss the feelgood of running, why we do it, how it makes us feel and what it is that keeps bringing us back for more. We all have our own reasons to run and in this episode, Jenni is joined by someone who is quite simply incredible, inspiring and an absolute action man.
Colour Sergeant Brian Wood MC is a former soldier in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. During his service in Iraq he led the first bayonet charge in 25 years and for his gallantry, he was awarded the Military Cross.
Woody now has set himself a new mission, to help drive and motivate others, to encourage us all to step outside our comfort zone by running a bit further or faster and by pushing ourselves a little more than we’re used to.
If you need a boost to get you out the door and on that run today, then this is absolutely the episode you need.
Happy running.

Helen Thorn
Today’s guest is the well-loved Helen Thorn - comedian, author and fellow podcaster, widely known for her hilarious take on parenting and being single in mid-life. But is she hilarious when it comes to chatting about running? The fast answer is YES!
Sometimes the catalyst for change is finding out your husband of 22 years has been having an affair behind your back…
At the time it blows up your life, but then one day you wake up, put on your running shoes, and realise life feels better than before. Sure, your boobs may deflate (listen to the episode), but you have grit like no other, and the sudden body confidence to pull off shorter clothes on Instagram.
That’s Helen’s story anyway, and she’s here to tell you that the mental and physical health benefits of running have positively changed her life.
PS. If you need a formal excuse to eat more carbs you should listen now.

Rick Shiels
For runners, the basics are get up, get out, get running. If only every sport was as straightforward. Take golf for instance, it’s a tad more complex…If it’s left - it’s a hook, If it’s right - it’s a slice, and if it’s straight - it’s a miracle!
This is probably the reason why the guest in this episode of RunPod is grateful to have running as his escapism….Today, Rick Shiels joins the RunPod Run Club.
Rick is a former professional golfer, who has an impressive fan base of over 2.2M subscribers on YouTube, and his own successful podcast called ‘The Rick Shiels Golf Show’.
Rick is also a runner and can’t deny how much the latter is a huge part of his life.
It truly doesn’t matter whether or not golf is your passion, this episode is a discussion about the joy of running, the reasons to get out there and an appreciation of its simplicity with incredible benefits.
Without doubt listening will make you want to get up, get out and get running.
Enjoy.

Andrew Cotter
We’re serving an ace episode of RunPod this week because Jenni has gone to Wimbledon - the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world to record with the legendary sports commentator Andrew Cotter.
When Andrew isn’t commentating on a Centre Court match and enjoying overpriced bowls of strawberries, you can find him running through leafy SW London parks and climbing up hills with his gorgeous dogs Olive and Mabel.
Running is Andrew’s saviour between work, and if anything is going to motivate you to run today, it’s probably the dulcet tones of a Scottish Broadcaster...
NB: this is a LIVE recording, so please forgive the joyful crowds, occasional tennis ball, and the sound of sprinklers… that grass has got to stay green somehow!

Laura Fountain
RunPod is the podcast where runners unite - all of them, the fast, the slow, the gazelles, the terminators, the short distance, the long distance, the sprinters, the ultra marathoners…. The motivated and the lazy!
Yup, if you run, you are a runner…even if you struggle to get out the door from time to time. This week’s guest is perfect to chat about all thing motivational, she calls herself lazy girl running yet she is far from lazy. Laura Fountain is a running coach and personal trainer but more than that, she just loves running.
A brilliant episode full of tips, dos, don’ts and plenty of reasons why you should get the trainers on and get out for a run. Enjoy.
