REV On Air: Plastic Free Solutions in Seaweed With Julia Marsh, Co-Founder of Sway
It is currently the middle of July, or as we at REV like to celebrate, Plastic Free July, where we look for solutions and alternatives to this highly polluting material. I could not think of a better or more inspiring guest to bring on to speak to us about how we rid ourselves of fossil fuel derived plastics and into a much more beautiful, cleaner world, than Julia Marsh, co-founder of Sway, which harnesses the power of seaweed to create home compostable replacements for plastic.
We cannot wait to get into this conversation that spans plastic free innovation, community and creativity with Julia who is truly one of the most articulate speakers on the subject we’ve ever been privileged to chat to, but first I want to say a quick merci to today’s sponsor - Seed.
Since our collaboration with Zach Bush and Farmer’s Footprint, I have been focusing a lot on the connection of a healthy microbiome as it relates to the food we eat and time spent connecting to the earth, but for extra support in my routine I turn to Seed.
Seed’s DS-01® Daily Synbiotic is a broad-spectrum probiotic and prebiotic for whole-body benefits including gut, skin, and heart health. As I am really focused on my gut health through eating as close to the source and soil as possible, Seed’s additional benefits for digestive and whole body health really complete my routine for a thriving body from the inside out. - Cora Hilts

So now a bit more about our guest today, Julia Marsh of Sway.
Seaweed is the foundation of all Sway products, which mimic the compelling qualities of plastic without the downsides. Utilizing the natural polymers abundant in seaweed, they are able to optimize and scale the solutions nature has already given us. While traditional plastics contribute to climate change at every step of their toxic existence, Sway materials are made with process in mind.
Sway sources responsibly cultivated, ocean-farmed seaweed grown in harmony with the ocean. They use a diverse set of red and brown seaweeds from around the world as the base of their packaging technology. Sway works exclusively with suppliers who provide dignified employment to farmers, meaning fair wages and good treatment. They are hard at work to support and help scale up suppliers for whom impact is the number one priority, such as supporting the transition to climate-resilient coastal economies with indigenous communities around the world and lobster fishermen here in Maine.
We actually learned of Sway through their work with Atlantic Sea Farms, an incredible female owned cooperative that is helping to mainstream kelp farming as a sustainable solution to food, packaging and beauty issues whilst preserving our oceans and drawing carbon down. More on them to come but for now, I can’t wait to get into this deep dive with Julia in honour of Plastic Free July and we hope you are all as inspired as I am to know that we do have solutions in the world, solutions that can even be regenerative in their nature, if we just believe in our own creativity and have faith in our ideas.

REV On Air: What Makes An Automobile Truly Sustainable with Rob Howard of Kindred Motorworks
As we continue our Earth Month conversations, we are so pleased to bring you today’s episode on a topic that has confusion and interest in equal measures around it - that would be the EV industry. Today, Cora Hilts discusses electric cars with a man we truly admire when it comes to his approach to them - Rob Howard, founder of Kindred Motor Works. We get into all the questions we have heard around the topic, and also what makes Kindred so incredibly unique in the automotive space as they are also upcycling vintage cars.
We all know that we need to change the way we drive. Cars and other forms of transportation are the biggest source of planet warming emissions generated within the United States and many other countries, and whilst there are a lot of concerns around the environmental impact of batteries and mining, which Rob and Cora discuss in-depth today, the science is quite clear that EVs are going to be our best option for now as we go into a green energy future.
But this is a discussion that is about much more than just cars, however. It’s about a company that is founded on a dream and made into a reality. A company that truly values the people that work there and is creating good jobs for them. A company that sees the value of technology, but also embraces the best of the old style ways of doing things. And maybe most interesting of all to anyone in the sustainability space, a company that believes that the most ethical option is simply the best one when it comes to the product that they produce.

Grass Roots Co-op
Off the back of our collaboration with Zach Bush and Farmer’s Footprint, we have been speaking a lot about regenerative agriculture and healthy, nourishing food systems. Grass Roots co-op fits right into this theme with their incredibly thoughtful approach to farming. Grass Roots is a co-op of farmers in rural America practicing regenerative farming that’s better for the animals, the soil, the environment, and everyone’s health.
One of the ranchers in the Grass Roots co-op describes her greatest title and role as “land-steward.” She’s talking about her work to help heal the ecosystem on the ranch; to foster healthy grasslands and soil that’s alive with roots and microbes continually drawing carbon out of the atmosphere. Like all Grass Roots partners, she manages the ranch based on principles of regenerative farming.
They have also joined Land to Market, an esteemed organization that verifies raw material production for its positive ecological impacts that is bridging the gap between regeneratively farmed land and consumers.

Our co-founder Cora Hilts speaks to Reverend Yearwood, President & CEO of the incredible human rights & climate organisation, Hip Hop Caucus! The goal of Hip Hop Caucus is to build a powerful and sustainable organization for the culture’s role in the civic process and empowerment of communities impacted first and worst by injustice. As a non-profit, non-partisan, multi-issue organization, Hip Hop Caucus focuses on addressing core issues impacting underserved and vulnerable communities, with programs and campaigns that support solution-driven community organizing led by today’s young leaders. Cora and Reverend Yearwood dive deep into the interactions between climate, community and politics and how faith can lead the way in supporting positive action and influence necessary change in the world.
Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. is the President & CEO of Hip Hop Caucus, a minister, community activist, U.S. Air Force veteran, and one of the most influential people in Hip Hop political life. Rev Yearwood entered the world of Hip Hop Politics as the Political and Grassroots Director for the Hip Hop Summit Action Network in 2003 and 2004, and as a key architect of P. Diddy’s “Vote Or Die!” campaign in a run up to the 2004 Presidential Election.
To carry the energy of the efforts beyond election day, he founded Hip Hop Caucus in September of 2004.
In 2008, Rev Yearwood led Hip Hop Caucus’ launch of Respect My Vote!, a campaign and coalition that works with Hip Hop artists to engage young people in the electoral process. Since its inception, numerous celebrity partners have joined the campaign during election cycles to reach their fan bases, including T.I., 2 Chainz, Amber Rose, Future, Keyshia Cole, Vic Mensa, Charlamagne tha God, Keke Palmer, Omar Epps, and more. The campaign has registered and mobilized tens of thousands of young voters to the polls and in 2008 set a world record of registering the most voters in one day (32,000 people across 16 U.S. cities). Respect My Vote! is the longest running hip hop oriented voter engagement program, having been active in United States elections for over 10 years.
As a national leader and pacemaker within the Green Movement, Rev Yearwood has been successfully bridging the gap between communities of color and environmental issue advocacy. REV On Air: The Regenerative Future of Food with Oliver English of Feeding Tomorrow
Our co-founder Cora went to LA speak to Oliver English, co-director of the new environmental documentary on the future of regenerative food and farming, Feeding Tomorrow. From growing up around food with both parents working as chefs in their family run restaurant business, to becoming a chef himself and taking on the world of the restaurant industry, in a pivotal moment, Oliver found his way into his passion for discovering the source of food and making that the key element of a good dish. Exploring this passion, Oliver made his way into filmmaking, and alongside brother and co-director Simon English, he created Feeding Tomorrow, a movie that explores the question 'How can we feed the earth’s population of 8 billion people in a just, sustainable, and environmentally responsible way?'. Oliver is also the Co-Founder & CEO of Common Table Creative, his creative agency for regenerative storytelling through film.
Food influences every part of our lives, yet our national agricultural system is going terribly wrong. From our emphasis on cattle farming and chemical fertilization to wasteful distribution, there is a direct connection between unhealthy soil and unhealthy people. Feeding Tomorrow poses one of the most important questions of our time: How can we feed the earth’s population of 8 billion people in a just, sustainable, and environmentally responsible way?

REV On Air: Can We Actually Finance Regeneration With David Leon
This podcast episode is a part of the REV x Farmer’s Footprint Regenerative Podcast Series!
Today in the thirteenth episode of our regenerative podcast series in collaboration with Farmer’s Footprint, we are speaking to David Leon, co-founder of Farmer’s Footprint and Biome Capital! David shines a light on the side of regenerative agriculture that we often wonder about don’t always get a full understanding of – the economics of regeneration. We are so grateful to be able to talk to David and have him help us understand the truth of how climate change and the cost of living crisis are affecting farmers and how, during these desperate and dire financial times, it is possible to take steps towards regeneration. David speaks of fascinating and debatable concepts such as placing monetary value on ecosystems and animal species in order for insurance companies and large corporations to take notice and account for them. As well as not working against but empathising with conventional farmers to turn what we already have into something positive and generative for all.
So just a little bit more about the work of Biome Capital and David’s role there. Biome invests capital in farmland equity in a model that allows growers to acquire new land or retain both an ownership interest in their land and the ability to manage their operations with relative autonomy. They meet a grower wherever she or he is along the spectrum of transition to regenerative management, and partner in a way that is supportive but not prescriptive.
Biome Capital Partners also invests additional capital outside the farm gate to benefit farmer partners (for example, in processing infrastructure or relevant AgTech). They seek to build regional regenerative ecosystems, and part of our investment mandate is to improve the economic and emotional health of their farmer partners and their community.

REV On Air: The Beautiful Role of Animals in Regeneration with Force of Nature
This podcast episode is a part of the REV x Farmer’s Footprint Regenerative Podcast Series!
In the ninth episode of our Regenerative Podcast Series in collaboration with Farmer’s Footprint, we speak to husband and wife duo, Katie Forrest & Taylor Collins, founders of Force of Nature! Katie & Taylor discuss what for some might be a sensitive topic but an important one when it comes to the future of animal husbandry. Once again coming back to the soil was Katie & Taylor’s lightbulb moment when optimising their diets and when switching from being plant based to meat eaters. In this episode they give us the most clear representation of the realities of consuming meat in 2023 and why regeneration is paramount in maintaining health across all biological systems.
Force of Nature spent the last decade studying regenerative agriculture at ranches all over the world before we answered the community’s call to launch their brand. Never before has a company founded on the principles of regenerative agriculture, curated a vast collection of land stewards, ranchers, and farmers who are committed to creating a positive return on the planet. All Force of Nature animals are raised in environments that encourage the expression of their natural behaviors while consuming the diets that they were biologically engineered and evolved to eat.
What Makes Force of Nature Regenerative?
As Force of Nature says, they are leading the regenerative revolution. They are on a mission to improve our collective environment and health through regenerative agriculture while creating food raised in a way that honors the systems within Mother Nature. They care for the soil, respect diversity in plants and animals on the land, and focus on natural outcomes versus synthetic inputs – no tilling, no synthetic chemicals, no hormones or antibiotics! Their range of meat is more delicious and nutritious than anything else you can buy, including organic and traditional grass fed. From Force of Nature you’ll find meats like Elk, Venison, Wild boar, Bison and the more conventional meats like beef, chicken, and pork.

REV On Air: The Evolution of a Regenerative Fashion Brand with Christy & Aras of Christy Dawn
This podcast episode is a part of the REV x Farmer’s Footprint Regenerative Podcast Series!
For the seventh episode in our regenerative podcast series in collaboration with Farmer’s Footprint, I got to go to LA and speak to husband and wife duo, Christy and Aras, of Christy Dawn – a regenerative fashion line that is doing more to make their brand sustainable than almost any other line I can think of in the industry. Their commitment to a better planet and human experience is palpable and I can’t wait to share this conversation with you all, but first a quick thank you to our sponsors of today’s episode.
This Podcast episode is brought to you by our friends at EcoCart, Vivobarefoot and Milky Oat!
“So to Christy and Aras and the story of Christy Dawn. I was lucky enough to get to do this podcast in person at their beautiful store on Abbot Kinney in LA. Christy and Aras started the Christy Dawn line in order to help women feel beautiful and comfortable in an array of dresses that they began making locally in LA with deadstock fabrics. As the brand evolved however, they knew they could be doing more – they wanted to heal the land more than simply do no harm. This led them to a partnership with Oshadi Collective, an incredible regenerative farm in India that is growing, processing and creating some of the most sustainable fabrics on earth.
This is a story of a couple who have put their passion and ideologies into creating something bigger than themselves, and Christy Dawn has gone from regenerating 4 acres to over 80 in the course of just a couple of years with the Farm to Closet collections. My conversation with them is incredibly honest, at some points surprising, and mostly a tale of the power of one couple to make an incredible impact on the fashion industry, but also people and the planet. Which really at the end of the day is the point of this whole series with Farmer’s Footprint! – Cora Hilts

This podcast episode is a part of the REV x Farmer’s Footprint Regenerative Podcast Series!
In our forth episode of our Regenerative Podcast Series in collaboration with Farmer’s Footprint, we speak to founder of Regenerative Travel and owner of Playa Viva, David Leventhal! Reframing luxury in the realm of travel, David opens our eyes to seeing regenerative tourism and hospitality as the ultimate luxury we can experience.
Since 2019, Regenerative Travel has been at the forefront of driving the travel industry towards a regenerative future. What began as a mission to connect travelers with environmentally and socially impactful hotels has evolved into a dynamic association and marketplace. Regenerative Travel’s overarching goal is to foster collaboration and synergy among all key stakeholders in the travel industry, uniting hotels, travel agents, DMCs, and tour operators under a unified vision.
Playa Viva was the vision of Sandra Kahn as executed by David Leventhal. Both have a background in social and environmental impact. Sandra and David were founders of Rainforest2Reef a non-profit which supported the creation of corridors for species protection in the Yucatan Peninsula and Calakmul area. R2R created one of the largest and most successful private reserves between local Ejido farmers who joined a conservation easement supported by global conservation NGOs. Regeneration principles have guided much of their work including the founding of Regenerative Travel and Regenerative Resorts to support similar independent hotel owners around the world doing great work in their local ecosystems promoting travel “Where Your Vacation Meets Your Values.”
David shares what it’s like to be on the ever-evolving journey of building a regenerative hotel and the importance of honouring the land you’re building on. Most importantly David speaks of the impact of community, and how once we all start making sustainable choices, it creates a ripple effect spanning further than you can imagine.

REV On Air: Regeneration Through Food & Pleasure with Alice Waters of Chez Panisse
This podcast episode is a part of the REV x Farmer’s Footprint Regenerative Podcast Series!
We are so delighted to welcome Alice Waters as our speaker on the second episode of our regenerative podcast series! Alice is the founder of California restaurant Chez Panisse and non-profit organisation, Edible Schoolyard and her values of sustainable food, flavour, regeneration and education runs strongly through both of them. Alice gives us a view on her upbringing being surrounded by homegrown and home cooked meals and eating as a family and how that has translated into the way she now operates Chez Panisse. Alice helps us see the connection that how caring for nature and produce can help bring us closer together at the dinner table and as a global community working together for a better, more regenerative world.
Alice's Work:
Chez Panisse
Alice Waters opened her restaurant, Chez Panisse fifty years ago as a place where friends and neighbors could gather together around the table, eat good food, and exchange ideas about politics, art, and culture. In pursuit of taste, Alice and the cooks of Chez Panisse ended up at the doorsteps of the small organic farmers who were growing flavorful heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables or raising heritage breeds of animals. Over time, the restaurant has built up a diverse network of these ethical local suppliers—ranchers, fishers, orchardists, foragers, farmers, and backyard gardeners—who practice regenerative agriculture and take care of the land.
Edible Schoolyard
Founded in 1995 by Alice, the Edible Schoolyard Project began as an idea to transform the food experience at a public middle school in Berkeley, California. The Edible Schoolyard Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the transformation of public education by using organic school gardens, kitchens, and cafeterias to teach both academic subjects and the values of nourishment, stewardship, and community. Edible education provides hands-on experiences that connect students to food, nature, and each other; and it systematically addresses the crises of climate change, public health, and social inequality. At its heart is a dynamic and joyful learning experience for every child.

REV On Air: The Effects of Textiles on Health and Planet with Michel May of AIZOME
Today we are very much looking forward to bringing you all a conversation with Michel May that about a subject that has become very near to us - that is the issue of chemicals and harmful dyes found in the vast majority of our textiles and in particular, bedding, which we are sleeping in every night. This extends of course across all textiles, but as our guest has launched a completely natural, plant based dyed bedding company, we want to focus a bit on that for today.
For some context, the global textile industry churns out millions of tons of products annually. 80% of those products are petrochemical-based, such as the non-biodegradable polyester fabrics. And the majority of commercially-used textile dye is made from oil, tar, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals. Conservatively, 60% of all dyes are AZO dyes – known carcinogens. Chlorobenzenes, common to both herbicides and dyes alike, are toxic when inhaled or when in direct contact with the skin. Not to mention that the chemical formaldehyde is a favorite for any fabric advertised as wrinkle-resistant sheets.
So what’s the good news here for our bodily and planetary health? That there are wonderful people coming up with wonderful, nature based solutions! So now on to my guest Michel of Aizome. Aizome craft luxuriously soft, healthy bedding, made entirely from plants. Using the magic of ultrasoundAIZOME has revived the lost art of plant dye for a modern, global market, infusing 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton with the pigment and properties of ancient medicinal herbs to create the naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, skin-soothing sheets that are durable, colorfast, and free from all synthetics and toxins, from seed to sheet.

Can the Floral Industry Ever Be Truly Sustainable with John Hackett of Arena Flowers
Today Cora is in conversation with John Hackett, CEO of Arena Flowers, known as the United Kingdom's most ethical large scale florist.
Awarded a maximum score of 100 by the Ethical Company Index, Arena Flowers is at the vanguard of a new movement towards sustainability in the flower industry. Whereas it was once considered acceptable to fly tulips from Chile in summer and peonies from New Zealand in November, florists are now being held to higher environmental standards. Along with considerations on packaging, this also means prioritising local and seasonal varieties.
Today John and Cora will discuss whether or not a global floral industry can ever be truly sustainable, the nuances of supply chains, and the human impact of creating an ethical business and also the arguments for and against both localization and globalization.. This is a truly thought provoking conversation and we can’t wait to share it with you all!
"Arena Flowers was founded with the belief that any business sourcing a beautiful, delicate product should respect the obvious relationship we have with the natural environment and commit to making a positive impact on the communities we work with. Flowers in the home connect us to the natural world they came from and each of our designs represents more than beauty, they reflect the choices we have made to promote fairness, quality and care." - John Hackett

REV On Air: Becoming a Regenerative Human and Supporting Indigenous Voices with Nat Kelley
Today our guest is the amazing Nathalie Kelley, Hollywood actress, regenerative and indigenous activist, and Kiss the Ground board member. I can’t wait to bring this conversation to you but first I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Red Mint for making today’s podcast possible.
Nat was born in Peru and raised in Australia by her Indigenous mother and grandmother. After working with street children in São Paulo, Brazil and Aborginal inner-city youth in Redfern, Australia, she began her degree in Social Science and Policy at the University of UNSW.
Not long after, she started to work as an actress in film and television in the US, with notable roles in shows like Unreal, Dynasty and most recently as the star of ABC’s The Baker and the Beauty.
Despite this change she remained inwardly mindful of her privilege and responsibility to her Indigenous heritage and people. After the 2019 fires in the Amazon and Australia, Nathalie experienced a shift in consciousness that led her to drastically change not just her lifestyle, but the way she engaged with social media. She worked to become an advocate for Indigenous peoples, regenerative agriculture, the soil and the undervalued but invaluable role of fungi in our ecosystem.
Nathalie is now committed to using her storytelling skills to be a voice for the voiceless — creating narratives of hope around the power of nature to regenerate and heal and the integral part humans have to play in this process. Nathalie is on the board of Kiss the Ground and the Fungi Foundation.. She works in deep devotion and service to the entire web of life, advocating in particular for the health of our soil, water, the fungí and forests. Her mission is the preservation of biodiversity, including cultural and myco-diversity on the planet. This is a beautiful conversation full of lots of insights on indigenous wisdom, the resilience and strength of nature, and ultimately our role in supporting both of these things.

REV On Air: Modern Intimacy & Purpose Led Business With Éva Goicochea of Maude
Today we have a very special guest as we move into Valentine’s Day next week and sex is top of mind for many! Éva Goicochea is the founder of Maude ,the only modern intimacy company that is solely focused on sexual wellness for all people.
Through a holistic approach to intimacy, maude creates body-safe and mood-setting essentials for before, during, and after sex. Since its launch in April 2018, maude has been featured in 1200+ publications including The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair, and was heralded as “redefining the sex essentials industry for modern consumers" by Forbes. To further their mission of making sexual wellness accessible for all people, maude works closely with Peer Health Exchange, Advocates for Youth, and SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States).
Éva herself spent her early career as a legislative aide in healthcare then over 10 years in ecommerce, social media, and brand strategy working with Squarespace, adidas, and on the early team at Everlane. As a sixth-generation New Mexican, Éva's passion for sexual health came from the disparity she saw first-hand — her home state is 48th worst in the US for condom usage and struggles with access to healthcare. Converging her passion for healthcare and brand, she launched maude.
To-date, she’s one of only 15 Latinx women to raise over $7 million in VC funding. She has also brought on actress Dakota Johnson as co-Creative Director and sits on the board of Peer Health Exchange.
Our conversation with Eva today is about moving the themes of intimacy and sexual health away from larger, more corporate approaches and into something more thoughtful and nuanced. We discuss the difficulties of being a female founder, raising capital and building a team with purpose. We also discuss the importance of starting businesses that have a deeper impact on the world in a positive way, and of course a bit on sex itself and the evolution of sexual health at a time when so many reproductive rights are being taken away from us. We hope this gets you thinking as much as it did us!

REV On Air: Hope in Regenerative Farming with Jesse Smith of White Buffalo Land Trust
Today we are so excited to be having a conversation about one of our favorite topics when it comes to tackling the climate crisis and other issues like biodiversity loss, soil health and even food justice - and that would be regenerative agriculture.
Jesse Smith is the Director of Land Stewardship for White Buffalo Land Trust and has been working for the past decade to develop a resilient food economy in California’s Central Coastal region. He’s an agricultural producer with a background in communication and industrial design, and has devoted his life to agricultural system design and community development to achieve evolutionary change within our food economy and ecology.
In addition to his role as Director of Land Stewardship at WBLT, he is a Trustee at the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens, a Trustee at Santa Barbara Middle School, a member of the Santa Barbara Food Action Network, and part of the Green America, Carbon Farming Innovation Network since 2017. After almost a decade of working in regenerative agriculture, ecological education, community leadership, and international consulting, Jesse is at the inflection point in his career.
Having firmly found a grounded footing in his work and community, he now has an opportunity to catalyze systemic change with the 1,000 acre Center for Regenerative Agriculture at Jalama Canyon Ranch as a powerful platform. As an individual with a multicultural and multidisciplinary background, he is a leader with a diverse perspective that can connect the threads within social, ecological, and capital systems. His vision to see the nested nature in which his local and regional work affects the larger national and global context is unique. His role is shifting the industry of agriculture from a paradigm of do-less-harm to one of living system regeneration, and the community that is growing around him is a manifestation of what the world needs most these days
This conversation is really about hope for the future and Jesse’s incredible optimism and love of a challenge is so refreshing to hear in times when bad news and a lot of hopelessness feels so pervasive. If this conversation doesn’t get you excited about the potential of regenerative agriculture to create a more just and sustainable world then we don’t know what will!

REV On Air: Anna Bario an Inclusive + Sustainable Jewelry Designer
Today we are so pleased to be having a conversation on the ‘true cost’ of the jewelry industry, and the bringing together of creativity with a social and environmental mission with Anna Bario who is the co-founder of the ethical jewelry line, Bario Neal.
Anna Bario and Page Neal started Bario Neal in 2008 with the shared idea that our most precious things come with a story.
While Anna and Page were drawn to the imaginative possibilities of jewelry, they were disillusioned by industry standards that turned a blind eye to the harmful, widespread effects of conventional mining. So before they launched the line, they committed to doing things better — for the earth, the people and communities within the supply chain, their customers, and in turn, their business.
Bario Neal is now an industry leader in ethical sourcing and mindful production. Their jewelry reflects individualism, gender and marriage equality, and conscious values rooted in ethical origin from mine to market. Their hope is that you’ll find a piece of jewelry that represents your most authentic self.
In today’s conversation, we dive into Anna’s passion for transparency within her industry, her commitment to finding the most sustainable ways to craft an heirloom piece, and her attraction to the handmade.
This episode covers the creation of ‘slow jewelry,’ making every person feel welcomed, and the sincerity of a brand that was started with ethics at it’s core. We also discuss some of the complexities of what truly sustainable jewelry and craft can entail, and how Anna approaches these in her own unique way. We also delve into being a women founded business and the challenges she overcame along the way. I hope you love this conversation as much as we did!

REV On Air: Solving the World's Plastic Pollution Problem With Innovation in Fashion with Javier Goyeneche of Ecoalf
Javier is the founder and president of ECOALF, an ethical fashion brand that was born in 2009 with a vision to stop carelessly using natural resources. Javier’s mission was to create the first generation of recycled products with the same quality and design as the best non-recycled products on the market.
Having spent a decade as a successful entrepreneur with his first brand, Javier gradually grew frustrated with the amount of waste he saw being produced by the fashion industry. He embarked on a mission to create an entirely new concept that would combine his design sensibility and understanding of the fashion consumer with the latest in recycled materials.
He has grown the company to be a leader in the space of truly sustainable enterprise…looking at everything from carbon footprints, waste management and what the positive impact of doing business can look like. Ecoalf is now recognized by B Corp as one of the global top 5% of companies that are best for the World, and his commitments to education and solution based work keeps expanding.
The Ecoalf Foundation is one of the elements of the company I find so interesting and a huge part of what we discuss today as something other businesses should really be trying to do themselves.
The History of the ECOALF Foundation is the story of Upcycling the Oceans, an unprecedented global adventure born in the Mediterranean Sea in 2015. The aim is to clean the oceans of marine waste with the help of the fishing industry and to give a second life to plastic waste through recycling and closing the loop. Currently, the ECOALF Foundation collaborates with local partners to carry out Upcycling the Oceans in Spain, Greece, Italy and Thailand though they are working on its implementation in other parts of the world as pollution is sadly so rampant throughout all of our oceans. They also collaborate on other projects in the fields of waste management, environmental awareness or research and development with institutions with whom they share common values and objectives. Since 2015, the foundation has collected 1000 tonnes of marine waste, proving that we really can have solutions within an economic system.
Javier’s passion for what he does is just infectious….his ability to work with everyone from local fishermen to understand how to engage with waste collection to collaborations with Goop and Barneys is indicative of someone who realizes that every person needs to be involved in saving the planet. Because, as his company slogan states, there is no planet B.

REV On Air: ISKO & Hiut Denim on Inclusive Solutions to Sustainability
Hello everyone, Cora here - welcome back to REV On Air, the Rêve En Vert podcast. A place for sustainable story telling with founders, activists, creatives and phenomenal individuals who are paving the way for a more conscious future for us all.
Today I am so excited to have a joint conversation between two very different companies taking very different approaches to sustainability issues within fashion. But in working together, they have used a smaller business model and a more large scale one to create an incredibly innovative recycled denim line that is the result of a joint venture. I truly believe that we cannot overlook either small or big business in solving the climate crisis and issues of sustainability within fashion and today’s conversation is really interesting in hearing two different view points on what that means.
First off, I will be chatting to Keith O’Brien of Isko Denim, a woven textiles and sustainable denim company that uses technology to produce the fabrics many designers create with. They were the the first denim producer in the world to be recognised with the Nordic Swan and EU Ecolabel certifications. Their waste management innovations reduce the environmental performance impact from yarn to fabric production, by using reused and recycled materials. Keith talks about leaving a job at Acadia Group to learn about sustainability with a role at ISKO and work to push more and more ethical collaborations.
David Hiat is the founder of Hiat Denim, an amazing jeans brand looking to bring back an ethical industry to a small town in Wales. In 2002, 400 of the world’s most talented jeans makers were suddenly put out of work when their employer outsourced denim production overseas. Overnight, 10 percent of the population of Cardigan, U.K., lost their jobs, as the country’s largest jean factory moved to Morocco. Now, David and his wife Clare are looking to put Cardigan back on the map by reopening the factory, and rehiring the original team to make the world’s best jean, using sustainable materials and local manufacturing.
With ISKO producing Hiut’s recycled and organic denim fabric, I wanted to ask both of these men about how this collaboration brought great results for each side in very different ways. This conversation shows us that actually we can look to al different sorts of companies for doing things well, and also truly the power of partnerships in sharing strengths to solve so many of the issues we face today, especially at a time when there seems to be so much division.
I loved talking to Keith and David, and I truly hope you all draw some inspiration for listening. Now over to our conversation!

REV On Air: Pushing the Boundaries of Sustainable Fashion with Vanessa Barboni Hallik of Another Tomorrow
Today I am extremely excited to have on a woman who is pushing the boundaries of what sustainable fashion can look like, having left a career in finance behind to start a company she believed needed to be the future of fashion. That would be Vanessa Borboni Hallik of the ethical luxury brand, Another Tomorrow.
We talk with Vanessa about her incredible journey starting Another Tomorrow in January 2018, while she was on a sabbatical from her former career in emerging markets finance. Taking time to learn about global issues she was both surprised and devastated by what she found in the apparel industry and its enormous impact on people, the environment, and animals. She made it a mission to start a fashion line doing things right and pushing boundaries on what would be possible within sustainability, and today I am thrilled to take you all on that journey with her. Now over to my conversation with the amazing Vanessa.
We also want to say a big thank you to Seela Activewear who has made today’s episode possible and who’s incredible plant based, luxury sportswear aligns very well with Vanessa’s conversation today that technology can truly be used for good and progress when it comes to the fashion industry.
Launched in 2020 by Ida Skarp in Zürich, Seela Studio encourages women to strengthen their bodies and minds with clean, plant based activewear products.Combining modern science with refined design, Seela develops thoughtful essentials for longevity that are at one with nature using an innovative, all plant based fabric.
Instead of using synthetic fibres which are produced from petroleum or gas, all Seela garments are made from castor oil, which is a multi-purpose vegetable oil that people have used for thousands of years for its natural health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory, bacteria-fighting and moisturising properties. What drives Seela is to create activewear that supports – rather than damages – the natural functions of your body and cares for the world in which we all enjoy our workouts. From limiting any chemical use to recycling water in their production process to choosing biodegradable materials, it’s all about what’s best for you and the planet.
On top of being one of the first plant based activewear companies, Seela are working with solar-powered factories, reusing water during the washing process, using a dyeing process with low water and energy consumption and sourcing and producing all materials – packaging included – from within Europe.

REV On Air: Sustainable Furniture with Maker&Son Founders Alex Willcock & Felix Conran
Today we are very excited to have on our first duo to the podcast - the Founders (and father and son) of the incredible British Sustainable furniture brand Maker&Son.
Father Alex Willcock and Son Felix Conran give us a touching and insightful look into their journey of coming together to found their brand and the process of integrating sustainability into every element of their business. We touch upon the risks of unsustainable furniture, the methods of sourcing sustainable materials, and choosing furniture to last for generations.
As founders of this incredible furniture line, Alex Willcock and Felix Conran have much more in common than being father and son. A gifted musician, Alex trained as a cabinet maker and furniture designer who’s curiosity led him to start his career path in Australia, where he met Felix’s mother. For Felix he would always have a family entrenched in design. Being the third generation of the Conran family to work in the field, Felix has always been encouraged to shape and ground his natural intuitiveness, and is proud to carry on a tradition of pioneering products for the home.
In this podcast, we talk to Alex and Felix about how they are maintaining their core tenants of sustainability whilst scaling a business that is rooted in localised production and all natural materials. We delve into the issues of unsustainable manufacturing that has come to dominate the furniture world as we know it today, and how we can all begin to ask more questions about where our furniture is made and what is in it.
We hope it leaves you thinking about what a better world of what we put in to our homes could look like!

REV On Air: Pioneering Clean Beauty and a love of Farming with Tata Harper
Tata and Henry Harper founded Tata Harper Skincare on their 1,200 acre organic farm in the Champlain Valley of Vermont in 2010. Both born in Baranquilla, Colombia, Tata and Henry met at Tata’s high school reunion. After stints in Miami and NYC they relocated to Vermont to raise their children and have a peaceful escape from the busy city life. Shortly after the move, Tata’s stepfather was diagnosed with cancer. Tata and Henry worked together to help him change his lifestyle following his diagnosis. In doing so, they learned that many toxic and harmful ingredients were lurking in their everyday products – even those that were luxury and claimed to be all natural. They recognized the ultimate irony in this –after all, isn’t health the ultimate luxury?
The two struck out on a journey to solve this problem and spent 5 years to research and develop what would become the very first Tata Harper product, one that delivered efficacious results and a luxury experience without having to compromise your health. Since inception, Tata and Henry have never wavered from their mission, to create a brand that epitomized beauty made without compromise. From their unique approach to formulation, grounded in the philosophy that complexity equals efficacy and more ingredients equal more results, to the completely vertical integration with zero shortcuts or outsourcing that now defines the farm-to-face movement, the two have pioneered what truly is the next generation of beauty. One that is not just natural and non-toxic, but one that delivers exponentially more results than ever before.
Cora and Tata discuss the issues within conventional skincare, how her love of farming has evolved, and why sustainability in every aspect of our lives is more important than ever before!

REV On Air: Less is Better with April of Vintner’s Daughter Skincare
Today Cora is talking to the woman who has arguably created the world’s most coveted sustainable skincare brand – that would be April Garguilo of Vintner’s Daughter.
Inspired by her upbringing in California’s Napa Valley and being a third generation vintner—set out to bring those same standards of exceptional quality and craftsmanship to the world of skincare. April turned to old-world, weeks-long infusion practices to harness each ingredient’s vital energy and nutrition. The resulting, deeply nourishing formulas, Active Treatment Essence™ and Active Botanical Serum™, are sought out by the most discerning beauty experts and enthusiasts around the world and have won the industry’s top beauty awards time and again.
Today, April and Cora speak about how she founded a brand based off of her own disappointing experiences, her commitments to sustainability and authenticity, and also something I loved discussing so much - how she has built a hugely popular business with just two products, proving the idea that we really do not need huge amounts of items to have economic success. That less really can be more, and that following what she calls our “north star” can be the thing that leads us to best possible place both professionally and personal.

REV On Air: The Power of Individual Climate Activism with Elizabeth Wathuti
Elizabeth Wathuti, Founder of Green Generation Initiative (GGI). Green Generation Initiative has been working on a range of solutions to address the challenges of; climate emergency, deforestation and biodiversity loss, eco –anxiety and ecological grief and society disconnected from nature.
We first learned of Elizabeth when she gave one of the most poignant speeches I heard at COP 26 late last year. As she spoke of the suffering of her people and the animals who are already ravaged by the effects of climate change in her native Kenya, she asked the audience to open their hearts to the idea of feeling some of the pain others are feeling. To allow ourselves to feel true empathy from others, and realise that our actions and fates are all intertwined, even as some parts of the world are more effected now than we are. It was a heart wrenching speech that over powered any of the talks given by world and business leaders who continue to support fossil fuel and other destructive industries.
We discuss how she finds the resilience to always be moving forward, what her community efforts have achieved, and also again asks us to open our hearts to understand what is happening in places like Kenya where climate change is so desperately affecting people who had nothing to do with creating it. This is ultimately one of those conversations that offers as much hope as it does the reality of where we are today, and I hope that Elizabeth’s words will leave you feeling as moved as they did us.

REV On Air with Charles Dowding: Organic Gardening and the Future of Sustainable Agriculture with the No Dig Gardening Guru
Today we are extremely happy to be bringing you a conversation about our food systems - the more we think about the environmental toll of mass agriculture that dominates how we mostly eat know the more passionate I am about support small scare, organic gardeners and we have a man on today who has devoted his life to growing sustainably and helping others to do so with him.
Charles Dowding has been gardening for nearly 40 years and is a beloved expert in the field in Great Britain. His influence though now stretches across the globe, including a strong presence on social media, several books, and appearances on the BBC amongst other news outlets.
Charles grew up on a dairy farm, but during his college years, he read a book by Australian philosopher, Peter Singer, which inspired him to become a vegetarian and led him to think differently about all the food we consume. So when he began to develop his 1.5 acre landscape shortly after graduating from Cambridge University, his principles of appreciating all forms of life extended into the garden there too.
He’s now renowned for his no-dig, organic gardening methods. It’s a method he teaches and continues to put to the test season after season with incredible results. He has inspired both young and old to take up farming.
This is a really amazing conversation with someone who has years of experience and knowledge of the way things currently work, and true thoughtfulness about the way they should work differently when it comes to food systems. REV On Air with Aja Barber: How Both Personal Responsibility and Corporate Accountability in Fashion Are Needed for the Humanitarian and Climate Crisis
Today we are so excited to have an incredibly inspiring voice with the sustainable fashion movement on with us in the form of author and activist Aja Barber.
Aja’s work builds heavily on ideas behind privilege, wealth inequality, racism, feminism, colonialism and how to fix the fashion industry with all these things in mind. She highlights inequality at the individual, societal and corporate level, using her own experiences and key observations within her own personal touch points. She is brilliant at identifying the the beliefs, institutional structures and corporate blind spots that hold inequality in place, and then suggesting ways to change that.
Our conversation today comes off the back of the REV team all just finishing her new book, Consumed, which we highly recommend everyone read. A lot of the themes go way beyond fashion into wider complexities that hold a broken system in place for so many of us, and how a lot of our own individual actions could go a long way to fixing the problems this poses. This is a straight talking conversation about both the severe issues with fast fashion and the solutions with sustainable fashion, and we can’t wait to get into it with Aja and share this with you all!
Also a big thank you to Hedoine sustainable tights who are making today’s episode possible. You can shop online at www.hedoine.com/rev and use promo code REV for 20% off your order of their beautiful, long lasting and biodegradable stockings!

REV On Air: How Beautiful Design Can Regenerate the World with Sebastian Cox Furniture
Today, we are extremely excited to be speaking to our first sustainable furniture maker, the amazing Sebastian Cox. With Cora having just bought her first home, she has been thinking a lot about the impact of what we put in our homes - the unsustainable deforestation, carbon footprints and waste that comes from so much of the furniture we buy so today’s episode feel very close to her now. Sebastian is a furniture designer, craftsman and environmentalist working with British woodlands.
Creating furniture from locally sourced wood has allowed Sebastian Cox to make his company and his employees carbon negative. Last year, Cox stored 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide in timber products such as furniture, kitchens and tree houses, he calculates. Now, he's on track to "smash" this record in 2021.
According to Sebastian, "The design community should be leading the material world into an intense period of re-greening and cooling our planet, and it should start by finding ways to make the excess carbon we have in our skies a resource to be used to regenerate our earth.”
Sebastian see design as a way to save the world, and his manifesto on how Britain can regenerate it’s woodlands through sustainable production, tree planting and and biodiversity building is truly quite something to read. We will ask him to cover most of his beliefs today, and this episode is a perfect mix of sustainable design, regenerating woodlands, building biodiversity and ethical furniture production.

This week kicks off climate week in New York City, and I couldn’t have asked for a better guest to speak to saving our climate than Leila Salazar-Lopez, Executive Director of Amazon Watch which is an Environmental Conservation Organisation supporting Indigenous peoples and Protecting the Amazon Rainforest.
Prior to leading Amazon Watch as Executive Director, Leila served as Program Director, overseeing the organisation's campaigns to defend the Amazon and advance indigenous rights. Her 15+ years of experience working to defend the world's rainforests includes grassroots organising and managing international advocacy campaigns as Campaign Director of Rainforest Action Network's Agribusiness campaign, Organizer for initial Amazon Watch Clean Up Ecuador campaign, and Organizer at Global Exchange. She is a graduate of both the University of California at Santa Barbara and Green Corps and is an utterly tireless and passionate advocate of climate justice and fighting for the Amazon people and indigenous communities who live within it.
Today we will discuss the peril of losing any more of the precious Amazon, but also the incredible wins and success she has overseen. This is an ultimately inspiring and inspirational conversation, and I hope it encourages everyone to action this Climate Week. Now over to my conversation with Leila.

REV On Air With Sidney Etienne: Individual Impact For An Agricultural Revolution with the founder of Grown in Haiti
Today on REV On Air we have on Sidney Etienne, the incredibly inspiring founder of Grown in Haiti - an organisation focused on reforesting Haiti and building community based solutions to food insecurity and environmental degradation. Grown in Haiti was founded in 2014 with the creation of a small nursery of diverse food bearing trees. Since then, they have planted and freely distributed well over 6,000 trees that people are not only already eating from, but also profiting from harvests.
As Sidney recently described to Vogue: “Food security is definitely an important issue. My neighbours literally own mountains, huge fields, and I watch them on a yearly basis working these entire fields, barely making $100 annually. The fact that the whole commercialised food system has driven even farmers out of the loop of their own food source is very upsetting, to say the least. [This is about] finding a way to feed ourselves and our families, share with our neighbours and still find a way to seek profit if we care to, without destroying the land and the planet in general.”
This is a conversation about the incredible power we all have as individuals to create serious change in the world, and Sidney’s dedication to the earth and the people of Haiti is hugely heartening, particularity as the island reels from one climate change caused disaster after another.
Cora and Sidney discuss the benefits and the absolute necessity of regenerative agriculture, how to dismantle colonialist food systems and work on food insecurity on local levels and with local communities, and how every individual can spark a bit of a revolution in their own way.

REV ON Air With Lesley Thornton: How Social & Environmental Justice Drove Klur, An Eco Inclusive Luxury Beauty Brand
Lesley Thornton is the founder of Klur. A purpose-driven, eco-inclusive, botanical skincare line. Before founding Klur, Lesley made her way across the beauty industry spectrum, beginning at Estee’ Lauder as a beauty trainer. She then transitioned to working as a freelance makeup artist specialising in editorial and advertising. From there Thornton was cast as an on-air beauty expert for the TLC network.
In 2010 she obtained her aesthetician’s license and started her own private practice. After years in the industry, she was equally frustrated by the harmful but hard-working conventional beauty products, but also the lack of rigorous R&D and science to back up green beauty products.
Today we speak first about Lesley's experiences as a young woman volunteering in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, and how her experiences of social injustice and environmental racism there impacted her life forever. It led her to believe that community based action was a powerful antidote to the status quo, and it's obvious that the passion from those life changing experiences still drives her today.
After a decade in the beauty industry, she realised that there was little to no representation for people of colour in the clean beauty space. She realised that the real issue lay in the lack of consideration for science and data, prioritisation of Eurocentric beauty, and absence of education available to most consumers. So, she quietly built Klur, from top to bottom, with no team or funding, relying on her own relentless desire to build responsible products that deliver consistent results through elegant and luxurious formulations.
Cora and Lesley move on to discuss the importance that clean beauty be inclusive of everyone, and also how other factors of wellness play such a huge role in the effectiveness or any clean beauty regime. They also talk about the importance of eating well, and how anyone, no matter what their background or economic situation, can engage with a better way of eating - from farmer's markets to growing your own vegetables wherever possible. They also touch upon how all consumers can better support black owned businesses and black voices in the fight for a better, more just world.
This is an incredibly powerful conversation with a woman who believes that social justice, health, beauty and environment all go hand in hand.

REV on Air With Susanne Kaufmann: Holistic Sustainable Living For Health, Beauty and Career
Today we are very excited to have one of the pioneers of the clean and green beauty space - a woman who was thinking about local manufacturing and all natural ingredients as an integral part of everything she does way ahead of it becoming a marketing tool we see happening so often in beauty today. We're talking about no other than Susanne Kaufman, who’s natural beauty line has become somewhat of a staple for many in the sustainable skincare space.
The idyllic Austrian Alpine region of the Bregenzerwald has been home to Susanne Kaufmann and her family for generations. Rolling hills adjacent to rugged peaks, vast meadows and rare plant life are framed by cultivated land and the smell of homegrown herbs and colourful flora.
Susanne grew up immersed in an understanding of the local traditions and the beauty and wellness benefits that could be found in the plants that grew in abundance in the area, which have served as her inspiration for the brand. Today the Susanne Kaufmann brand combines Susanne’s expertise in natural ingredients and skincare philosophy with her values for innovation and sustainable living, and she shares this with customers all over the world.
We discuss how important using sustainably sourced, natural ingredients is to creating a more sustainable beauty world, how incredibly important diet and lifestyle factors are when it comes to the health of our skin and also just the incredible power of plants.

REV On Air With Lily Cole: Who Cares Wins - Reasons For Optimism Within The Climate Crisis
Today on the REV podcast we speak to Lily Cole - model, actress, entrepreneur and now author of an incredible book, Who Cares Wins - reasons for optimism in our changing world. Lily started her career in modelling early, and quickly took advantage of the education she was getting into consumerism and unsustainable production to explore her own interest in ethical manufacturing and environmentalism. She became a spokesperson for animal cruelty, human injustices and detrimental fashion practices from the inside of the industry, and has only allowed her voice to grow with each passing year.
She has set up a sustainable sunglasses brand called Wires which we are thrilled to have here on REV, and she has dedicated the past couple of years to speaking to as many people as possible about our solutions to the climate crisis. At a moment when so many of us are despairing about the future, Lily is trying to offer optimism and actionable tasks for us all. Within her book Who Cares Wins, we learn so much about the brilliant people forging a more sustainable future and today we are going to discuss the movement towards a green future and how we can all engage with it. Also, how to not let fear and anxiety overtake our feelings towards the climate crisis and allow for apathy over action.
Lily is a trailblazer and we can’t wait to share her story with you all as she’s such an inspiration. We hope this conversation will lead you to action and conversation as we need more than ever to be tackling the climate crisis together.

REV On Air With Charles Eisenstein: The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible - How We Solve the Climate Crisis Philosophically
Today we have the great honour of speaking to someone who we have looked up to for many years, and who has influenced much of our thinking when it comes to communicating the climate crisis, how to speak to our friends and family about sustainability and the changes we must make, and also remembering that the heart can sometimes be a more powerful ally in this fight for a better world than anything else.
Our guest is Charles Eistenstein, author, philosopher and social speaker. His book The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible was one of the fundamental reads for us here at Rêve En Vert, and his latest work, Climate A New Story, has helped us gain perspective about how we address this climate crisis in a way that leads with empathy and understanding rather than anger and division.
Charles and Cora discuss how we find a way to approach a new sort of human collective, a better world, and how we can talk about climate change with our friends and families in a way that will inspire rather than frustrate one another to lead to all these results. This is a conversation that will get you both questioning and considering our mindsets and our lifestyles, and we hope that this will lead to some positive actions that we all can get on board with towards healing the divisions in the world we see today that are leading to the environmental crisis we all face.
We would also highly suggest you check out Charles’s books and essays, which are in the show notes below. This is one of those soulful, deep conversations that we wish we would all have more of, and we very much hope it gets you thinking as much as it did us.

REV On Air With Eileen Fisher: Building a Legacy Brand & Sustainable Fashion Today
Today on REV On Air we are having a conversation on sustainability, female entrepreneurship and the challenges and opportunities of truly ethical fashion with the iconic Eileen Fisher.
Eileen started her fashion brand in 1984 in the most organic of ways, with $350 of her own money, and has now turned it into a company of over 1000 people and more than 65 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Throughout this time, Eileen has remained true to her vision of the company and in recent years has redoubled her efforts to make the company a beacon of sustainability as one of the bigger fashion players. When I first spoke to her, I was shocked at how humble, committed and passionate she remains about everything they do at the company.
