In this episode I look at how the Tudors saw their own island's history. Bear with me through the admin - it's been a while since I did a big housekeeping. Episode 143: The Great Debasement
In the 1540's Henry VIII began what economists have called the greatest monetary treason ever committed against citizens. What was this con job? The Great Debasement, when coins went from containing about 92% silver to less than 30%. More money to make war on France! And Ireland! Only not. It backfired. Episode 142: A Deep Dive into 1527
About ten years ago I read One Summer by Bill Bryson, which chronicled the summer of 1927 in America. I absolutely adore Bill Bryson anyway, and this book didn't disappoint. I wanted to do something similar on this show, showcasing one year in Tudor England. Just a spotlight on one eventful year. I chose 1527 because it was 400 years before Bill Bryson's book, and also it was the year that Henry's Great Matter began, so there was a lot to talk about. You can get full show notes, sources, etc., at englandcast.com/1527.And remember that I will be eternally grateful if you'd be so kind as to leave a rating or review (hopefully a good one!) in whatever place you listen to this show. Episode 139: Bad (Tudor) Romance
It's a day to celebrate love, and romance, and all that mushy stuff. And the 16th century has its share of great love stories (fun fact: the wedding vows that we use today - to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, etc - are from Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, and were inspired by his own secret marriage). But what about the romances that went sour? They may have started off full of hope, but then it all backfired. In this episode we take a look at a couple of Bad Tudor Romances.Remember, if you like this show, the best thing you can do to help it grow is to leave a rating or review on whatever podcatcher you're using to listen to this. Episode 134: Tudor London - St Paul's
This episode is the first in a mini series on life in Tudor London, and today I give a brief intro to what life was like in the capital during the Tudor period, followed by an exploration of the most obvious landmark in the City - St Paul's Cathedral. But it's not the St Paul's we know - it was a gothic church, that was started 400 years before our Tudor friends lived there. The other thing that is important about life around St Paul's was the publishing and bookselling businesses that sprang up around the churchyard. It became a hub of books and pamphlets, and was the Elizabethan equivalent of Waterstones or Barnes and Noble.TudorFair.com for all your gift giving needs.Englandcast.com/Tudorcon2020 for Tudorcon infoEnglandcast.com/stpauls for show notesRemember, if you like this show, the number one way you can support it is by leaving a rating or review on iTunes, or wherever you are listening to this. There's this myth that people in medieval and early Modern England didn't travel - that they stayed in their one little area forever, and that was that. Episode 109: Divorce in the Middle Ages (aka was there precedent for Henry's request)
This week, we look at the Big A. Annulment. There is a narrative that Henry was doing something really outrageous when he wanted to end his marriage to Katherine. When instead, he was actually doing something pretty normal. This week we look at divorce and annulments in Medieval England to show that what Henry was asking for was actually something that was very common, and what made it such a big deal was how much it was fought against, and that he didn't get what he was asking for.Show notes at Englandcast.com.Remember to check out the Tudor Radio Network at tudorradionetwork.comAnd if you like this show, please leave a rating on itunes or apple podcasts. What a thrill it was to speak with Alison Weir for the second time about her new book on Anne Boleyn. Episode 068: Black Tudors
It's Black History Month in North America, and in honor of that, I am going out of the planned narrative of war with France, and doing this episode on the black Tudor experience. There have been black people in England since Roman times, and records show them in England throughout the middle ages. During the Age of Exploration, though, the population in London and England grew, so much so that Elizabeth I thought she might have to do something about it. She was unsuccessful, though. Interestingly, the slave trade didn't really take off in England until the mid 17th century, and under English law it was impossible to be a slave in Tudor England, so the experience of black Tudors is unique compared to those in Spain and Portugal during this time. In fact, the story is largely how similar to white Tudors their experience was. By that, I mean that their experience ran the spectrum from being poor servants to having important roles at court, and everything in the middle. You'd never know it based on the pop culture interpretations of Tudor England, though. So join me in this episode to learn about several black Tudors including a black soldier who was made a knight after defeating the Scots. If you like this show, please leave me a rating on iTunes.
