Episode 220: Parenting in the Toxic Achievement Culture with Jennifer B. Wallace

Jennifer Breheny Wallace is an award-winning journalist and author of the instant New York Times bestselling book Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It. Her forthcoming book Mattering in the Modern World: A Solution for the Crises of Our Time is based on five years of research and an original global mattering survey. Wallace is the founder of The Mattering Institute, whose mission is to create cultures of mattering in homes, workplaces, and communities, and co-founder of The Mattering Movement, a nonprofit whose mission is to create cultures of mattering in schools. We were thrilled to share a conversation recently with Jennifer and learn more about her important work and writing. We would highly recommend you grab a copy of her books. Never Enough continues to be so important as we raise kids to value character more than success, AND every one of us who loves a kid wants them to not only know but experience how much they matter. You’re going to want to take notes for this one. We’re so grateful for this rich conversation with our new friend, Jennifer B. Wallace. . . . . . Episode 219: Milestone Four - Resourcefulness

In Raising Worry-Free Girls, Sissy defines anxiety as an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of themselves. The same is true for boys. In 30 years of counseling kids, we have never seen kids struggle with the idea of resourcefulness like we do today. You all, we believe this conversation is crucial to helping the kids we love grow up into emotionally healthy adults. They need both the knowledge and the tools it takes to be resourceful. In today’s podcast, Sissy and David are talking about what we can do to help kids build this profoundly important muscle. Y’all—this one is a PLEASE LISTEN episode. We have been really excited about this episode coming out at this time in our world since we got it scheduled. But after talking with our friends Michael and Melissa Wear, we believe this conversation is imperative for all of us… no matter our political affiliation. It has been said about Michael Wear, “Even as we find ourselves in a crisis of disillusionment, and even despair, about the state of American politics, Wear reminds us that we must hold fast to the belief that we can change our country and our world for the better. Each of us would do well to adopt at least a bit of Wear’s realistic hopefulness.” His wife speaks to the same kind of buoyant, practical hopefulness, which we all need in this season. Episode 215: Milestone Three - Empathy

We’re so grateful to be talking about empathy on the podcast this week. We believe the muscle of empathy is one that kids are struggling to develop more than ever before. In this episode, we talk about why and, even more importantly, what we can do about it. Empathy truly is a pre-requisite for healthy relationships. So, let’s all work together to help the kids we love grow in their awareness, love, and empathy for those around them, including and maybe even especially those that live under the same roof! . . . . . Episode 209 - Milestone Two: How to have an Emotional Perspective

Y’all, we really believe this episode is a MUST LISTEN. On a 1 to 10 scale when it comes to emotions, we’re seeing more kids who are living at 10 than ever before. They’re using big words. You’ve heard us say it…rather than sad, they’re saying “I’m depressed.” Rather than worried or stressed, they’re saying “I have anxiety.” When they get the very most upset, they say “I want to kill myself!” And we’re left wondering—and panicking—that it really might be true. We have GOT to help kids find their way not only to accurate words to describe their emotion but to the FOUNDATIONAL milestone of perspective. In other words, we know, as adults, that most of life is about a 3 to a 7 on a scale and we have to help kids find their way to the 3’s and the 7’s, so we really do know the 10’s are happening. Plus, that kind of perspective is crucial to healthy relationships, workplaces…just healthy life, in general. So, we really do believe this conversation is deeply important. Share it with your friends, with your spouse, on your stories, in all the spaces. We’ve got to change things for the kids we love.  . . . . . Episode 197: The Family Table and Things that Matter with Charlie Peacock & Andi Ashworth

We loved getting to sit and have a conversation with two people we have loved and admired for so long, Andi and Charlie Peacock Ashworth. In fact, we were both attending a Bible study in their home (which we’ll talk about) before we knew them or each other, way back in our 20’s, along with all of the other 20 and 30 and 40-something year old’s in Nashville. We have learned so much from these two, as they have invited us in to so many conversations over the years, whether those conversations took place through books or music or in person. We can’t wait for you to listen in and learn from them, too, as we talk about music, the family table, and their new book, Why Everything That Doesn’t Matter, Matters So Much. Episode 182: Letting go of the “Shoulds” in Parenting with Dr. Alison Cook

We talk often about how the very best thing you can do, as a parent, is to work on your own stuff. Dr. Alison Cook is a trusted therapist and friend who is helping the world do that! Through her podcast, The Best of You and her newest book, I Shouldn’t Feel This Way, Alison helps us trade mental chaos for clarity, learn how to understand and process our emotions in healthy ways, and stop the self-defeating cycles we can all fall into. Episode 181: The Benefits of Camp and the Upside of Being Homesick with Glenn and Carter Breazeale

On Episode 80, we had a psychologist named Dr. Michael Thompson on the podcast to discuss the social connections of kids. He talked about the importance of summer camp for kids and said the very best part of summer camp is “that you’re not there.” Makes sense. We have talked to and witnessed the impact of camps for countless kids over the years…not just the skills learned like archery and horseback riding, but the independence and confidence gained from having opportunities they wouldn’t have had at home. Plus, a friend said recently that camp is literally the one place kids go anymore where they have no connection to technology. Hallelujah for that! On this week’s episode, we have our friends Glenn and Carter Breazeale, the owners and directors of Alpine Camp for Boys —of which we’re big fans, by the way. They talk about not only the importance of camp but how to help prepare your kids for camp this summer. So much wisdom, practical help and hope in this episode—we can’t wait for you to listen! Episode 163: Building Awareness and Creating Change around Racism for Today’s Kids

We talk so often about how concerned we are about the division in our world today. Division, intolerance, conflict, a lack of civility and sometimes even just a lack of awareness. We love getting to have a podcast for many reasons, but maybe at the top is that we get to learn from voices we respect and trust. Shanera Williamson is one of those voices. In this episode of the podcast, she’s helping us not only build awareness, but think on how we can help create CHANGE around racism for the kids we love. We’re so excited about this episode and grateful for the wisdom, thoughtfulness and grace of our friend Shanera! . . . . . Episode 159: Preparing Your Kids and Yourself for the Teenage Years with Lisa Damour

It is one of our very favorite things to get to talk with folks in our field who we admire greatly, only to find out we also REALLY like them. Dr. Lisa Damour was one of those people. We loved every second of our conversation with her and are confident you will, too. Dr. Damour is a three-time NYT bestselling author with her books Untangled, Under Pressure and her newest, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers. She is wise, thoughtful, kind, and her words are peppered with a humility that endears you to her immediately. We can’t wait for you to glean from her wisdom on teenagers, the mental health of our youth today, the impact of technology and more. As she says and we wholeheartedly agree, it has never been harder to be a teenager. They need us…even when they don’t act like it. And she’s got some practical ideas on how we can not only connect, but can help them find confidence in who they are. . . . . . Episode 156: The Middle Years: Stage 3 - Who They Are

In this week’s episode, we dive into the beginnings of adolescence. As we know, girls have often surged ahead in their maturity, physically and emotionally. Which, in this stage, means not-so-great news. But, the sooner we see girls move into their teenage angsty-ness, the sooner they move out of it. For girls, we’ll call these years the narcissistic years…because, IYKYK. For boys, we’ll call him the Individual. Listen along as we dive into who he and she are in their middle school years. And our hope is that this conversation gives you hope as you buckle up for what we believe are some of the toughest years in a child’s life…and a parent’s, too...particularly for girls. Episode 129: How Anxiety Impacts Your Body and Mind

As we continue journeying through The Worry Free Parent content, we’ve moved from understanding to help. This week we talk through help for the mind, help for the body and help for the heart. You’ve heard us say before, and we will keep reminding you, that we can only take the kids we love as far as we’ve gone ourselves. If it’s difficult for us to quiet the voice of worry, and practice these game-changing skills ourselves, it will be hard for our kids to do the same. Practicing these skills allows kids to see it on the grown ups they trust the most. It also allows us to be more of the parents (and people) we hope to be. . . . . .Order The Worry-Free Parent or The Worry-Free Parent Workbook today!Sign up to receive the RBG monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! Find us on YouTube!Download a copy of the Raising Boys and Girls Feelings ChartConnect with David, Sissy, and Melissa at raisingboysandgirls.com.. . . . .If you would like to partner with Raising Boys and Girls as a podcast sponsor, fill out our Advertise with us form.. . . . .A special thank-you to our sponsors:Lifeway: Use Code: RBGCSB at checkout on Lifeway.com for 40% regular priced CSB Bibles.KiwiCo: 50% off your first month plus FREE shipping at kiwico.com and use promo code rbg.Hiya Health: Receive 50% off your first order at hiyahealth.com/RBG.Reliefband: Save 20% off, plus free shipping at reliefband.com with code RBG.

Episode 104: Helping Kids Find Hope in the Midst of Tragedy

Join David, Sissy, and Melissa as they focus on HOPE. This was set to be recorded last week and little did they know how their hope would be impacted by the tragedy that unfolded at the Covenant School. This recording was honestly the first chance they had to talk through the week…to process the loss and the grief and the moments of God’s goodness piercing through. Because, as the Uber driver they mentioned in the episode said, “We share the same hope.” We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post… Hebrews 6:18-20, MSG. . . . .A special thank you to our sponsors:Hiya Health - Go to hiyahealth.com/RBG and receive 50% off your first order!Sundays - Go to SundaysForDogs.com/RBG or use code RBG at checkout to get 35% off your first order.. . . . .Sign up to receive the RBG monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! Pre-Order the Worry-Free Parent by Sissy!Find us on YouTube!Download a copy of the Raising Boys and Girls Feelings ChartConnect with David, Sissy, and Melissa at raisingboysandgirls.com.
