M&R Episode 151: Gil talks about growing up on a kibbutz in Israel and finding an artistic community in the jungle of Vietnam.

Life for Gil was very different as his community operated without the use of money and they shared everything, even the responsibility of raising all the children. Now Gil finds himself living in Hanoi Vietnam working within a new type of community. A community of artists whose leader was a censor police officer during the cold war. Dao Anh Khanh would regulate what artist and authors could say and display in communist Vietnam. Now Khanh is one of the biggest performance artists in Vietnam and Gil is partnering with Dao Anh Khanh to help facilitate transformative retreats in the jungle with Khanh. In Episode 140 I spoke with expat Josh White. He’s a professional caver living in Phong Nha Vietnam. Josh talks about feeling like he never fit in back in the UK. He’s battled with depression over the years but has discovered ways to manage it through his passion for caving and reading a book called Living With A Black Dog: His Name Is Depression. He recommends anyone who suffers from depression read this book. Now Josh spends his days doing what he loves but says he has to monitor his moods. The book has given him tools that help him avoid depressive triggers and negative mental cycles. M&R Episode 139: Paige Wylie talks about her side hustle of opening oysters in search of pearls on Facebook live.
In Episode 139 I spoke with Paige Wylie. She’s a single mom of two and designing her life around a side hustle she loves. Paige has a pearl shop on Facebook live where two to three time a week she opens oysters for her viewers that have pre-purchased jewelry to have to pearl set in. She loves her side hustle and makes an extra three to four thousand dollars a month. I was blown away when I saw what she did and heard about this business model. As she says, watching someone open an oyster live is addicting. The excitement of what will come out of the oyster and the community surrounding the experience is what keeps her and her follower coming back for more. M&R Episode 130: Five years in Vietnam and a giant passport problem with Dwayne Dixon.
In Episode 130 I sat down with expat Dwayne Dixon. He grew up in Mumbai India to a family who were some of the first colonizers when it was known as Queen Victoria Gate or the Gateway to India. Dwayne’s got a bit of a passport problem. He is eligible for a British and Portuguese passport but due to a land dispute back in India he’s having trouble proving his birthright connecting him to his royal past. It’s a really interesting story that has left Dwayne in a bit of a holding pattern the last five years much of it spent if Phong Nha Vietnam where he says he’s finally found a community he feels comfortable in and can be himself. In Episode 126 I spoke with Susan Jagannath. She lost her job as a technical writer and instead of looking for another she created her own. Susan became a writer and writing coach. She now writes travel guides about her treks around the world plus coaches new authors on how to write their first book. She has a real passion for writing and hiking the most iconic, scenic routes around the world. She recently designed her life to spend six months a year in her home country of India and six months back in Australia where she raised her children. Susan is a great example of someone who is reinventing herself after a long fruitful career. Now she is living her passions. After getting out of the military he found that even with a degree in math from West Point, a career as an Army Intelligence Officer, the companies he always dreamed of working for didn’t have a place for him or so they said. He quickly adjusted and got his dream job but he had to get creative. After eighteen years and multiple jobs he decided to start his own business using all the tools and recourse that helped him over the years and now he helps the men and women who are just getting out and wanting a desirable, fulfilling career in something new. M&R Episode 109: What it felt like to try and sail solo around the world with Nabil Amra.
In Episode 109 I caught up with Nabil Amra. You may remember him from episode forty-nine. He was a contestant in the Golden Globe, a solo sail around the world. A race that has only been held once in fifty years. In this episode Nabil recounts the trials and tribulations of trying to get his boat seaworthy before the race. Then the sea conditions destroyed his autopilot and drove him back to the Canary Islands. It became a survival sail that took him sixty four hours and left him a shell of a man when he finally got there. It’s a very honest account of one competitor’s challenge in accomplishing a dream. M&R Episode 078: Ziad Khoury went from civil war in Lebanon to inspirational youth soccer coach in America.
In Episode 78 I sat down with expat Ziad Khoury. He is one of the founders of the soccer club Slammers FC and writer of his new book Complete Athlete. He was also my high school soccer coach. We talked about how he grew up in Lebanon during the civil war and what it was like moving to the States at age fifteen. I get to share with him face to face how he changed my life 20 years ago and he takes me through his philosophy on soccer and life. He's designed an incredible life for himself and is one of my biggest inspirations because he helped me understand what it takes to be a successful athlete and human being. M&R Episode 064: Spirit Creager was virtually tasered to death by Washington State police and now lives in Nicaragua.
In Episode 64 I sat down with expat Spirit Creager who always had dreams of getting away. Before he knew it he had a son, house and construction company back in Spokane Washington that was going to need his attention for the next 20 years. Then the housing crisis hit and times started getting tough. One day he got pulled over for speeding and this routine traffic stop escalates to the point the officer tasers Spirit multiple times. Now Spirit suffers from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). This was the catalyst for him to make some changes in his life. Spirit now lives in Nicaragua with his wife and they are beginning to build a company that focuses on the creation of all natural products made in Nicaragua. Have a listen to learn more. She has experienced severe to debilitating anxiety since she was 15 and been on a cocktail of drugs to treat her anxiety and depression since then. M&R Episode 049: Nabil Amra is quitting his job and sailing in the Golden Globe for Team Palestine.
In Episode 49 I caught up with Nabil Amra a Palestinian/American foreign exchange trader in Minneapolis. Nabil is about to cut ties with his present job/life forever. He admits to being burnt out on the 9 to 5 and ready to embrace something different. He has decided to start this new life by joining a sailing race that has only been held one time previously 50 years ago. It's called the Golden Globe and it's a solo sail around the world that he hopes will take him roughly 9 months. The rules require that no modern technology be used during the sail so he'll be navigating via the stars using charts, a compass and a sextant. It's incredibly exciting to hear about his motivation for doing it and how he is preparing. Enjoy! M&R Episode 048: Jungle Joe calls himself Mr. Lucky. He faced his demons, raised his daughter and is looking to retire in Nicaragua.

M&R Episode 047: Mandy ventured out into the world and through a few serendipitous occurrences landed in Nicaragua to teach yoga.

M&R Episode 044: Jasi Rashid earned her PHD then decided to change her life completely and move to Nicaragua.
In Episode 44 I sat down with expat Jasi Rashid who at age 30 finished her PHD in ancient history and classical archaeology. After getting the job of her dreams she realized she didn't have the kind of freedom to live her life the way she wanted so she made a drastic change. She bought a one-way flight to Mexico for 250 euros and used the 350 she had left to start traveling and make her way to Nicaragua. M&R Episode 033: Seth Morrill found a new frontier in Nicaragua to surf, start a business and raise his family.
In Episode 33 I spoke with expat Seth Morrill who found himself bartending in Maui and serving old-school locals who talked about..."Back in the day...I bought my property on the beach for $30,000. I use to surf Honolua Bay with only 2 guys out.". It left him wondering if there were any other places still out there he could stake his claim and get in early on the dream life. Well, he found it in Nicaragua and is raising his family there. He has a complete perspective on expat life. Recently his baby girl underwent open heart surgery in Panama. He said although the experience was hard to go through the medical care they got in Panama and the regular care they get in Nicaragua is top notch and less than %50 of what it would cost in the States. M&R Episode 032: Verina Olivari runs a super cool cyber cafe in Nicaragua and opens up about taking responsibility for her life.
In Episode 32 I spoke with expat Verina Olivari who shared very openly her decision to change her life and design it the way she wanted. She felt in order to do this she had to break free from those who influenced her the most. For her it was friends and family so she decided to limit communication with them and go after her dream of becoming an actress. Verina set out on a two year journey that ranged from pursuing an acting career in Hollywood to finding out acting wasn't really what she wanted. Now she lives in Nicaragua with the man she loves, has a great relationship with her family and runs a super cool cyber cafe in Nicaragua. Her story is one that really inspires me because she had to make some really big sacrifices in order to find out who she was and what she wanted. Sometimes the ones we love the most are the ones holding us back. Success as Varina says only comes when you're willing to take responsibility for your life and design it the way you want. Verina did just that and says she is excited to keep shaping it in ways that give back to a world that has given her so much. He concocted a plan that would take him to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait with the goal of making $200,000 so he could go back to Mexico and retire. In Episode 25 I spoke with Legend a gentleman who 5 years ago sold everything and put all his money into an irrevocable trust he bequeathed to his niece and nephew. He walk out his front door with a sign that said "Will work for food." and began designing what he calls a simple life. In Episode 009 I had the pleasure of sitting down with two Syrian refugees I met in Sweden. These beautiful human beings gave me a better picture of what life was like before and after the war started. They didn't flee immediately but only after 4 years when their number was up and they were going to be drafted into Bashar al-Assads military. M&R Episode 005: Brian was sentenced to 10 years in a Mexican prison for smuggling marijuana.
In Episode 005 I sat down with expat Brian Friedricks. Brian doesn't fear death or prison because he has been to prison twice and died in a car accident once. He smuggled marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico for years. His cellmate was George Jung (Jonny Depp's character in Blow) when he got busted the second time. He now lives in Nicaragua and recently fought off being permanently paralyzed due to complications from his injuries. His presence to say the least is peaceful, calm and focused. In Episode 004 I sat down with expat Dale Dagger. He is a surf pioneer and all around legend in Nicaragua. He felt the American dream wasn't for him and set sail in the 70s. After sailing the Pacific for years he found himself shipwrecked and broke in Nicaragua during the 90s. Instead of heading back to the states he decided to stay and through sheer grit and ingenuity created a small but respectable real estate empire for himself.
