Hot Flushes and Seasonal Change
Menopausal symptoms can take a long time to resolve, this study was looking at 20% of women having hot flushes 8 year prior to their last menstrual cycle, that is far too long to be suffering, there are things you can do to improve your situation, you are worth it, please don’t put your head in the sand and try to wait it out. There will be summer peaks and winter troughs along the way but as a general rule things are likely to get worse the closer to the last menstrual bleed before they start getting better, unless you take action! Optimising low iron levels
Have you considered the role of hepcidin in regulating your low iron levels? Hepcidin is the master iron regulating hormone. Hepcidin binds to and blocks ferroportin, an iron export protein, blocking it from iron and preventing it’s absorption. In simpler terms it changes the amount of available iron receptors in the small intestines that can absorb iron. Walking for Menopause Symptom Relief
Regular physical activity, such as walking, can have several positive effects on overall health, including potential benefits for the menopausal transition. Why walking? Because walking is free, available everywhere, and has a really low risk of injury. You can do it by yourself, with your dog, or together with other family members or friends. You can use walking in three different ways. One for the reduction of symptoms you are currently experiencing, 2 for the prevention of future issues, 3 just for fun! Some of the benefits of walking can occur in as little as 10 minutes, with 1 walk, other benefits take much longer and need a greater frequency. The Iron Curse with Dr Christy Sutton
Dr. Christy Sutton is a chiropractor, who is interested in asking why health problems occur, what the root causes are, and what the safest and most effective solutions to health problems are the foundation of her writing, teaching, and clinical practice. Her personal health struggles and her desperation to find answers to her own serious health problems surrounding Crohn’s and Celiac disease have led her down the alternative healthcare path and to look for ways to find and avoid genetic landmines. Her first book “Genetic Testing: Defining Your Path to a Personalized Health Plan”; and its corresponding “Genetic Detoxification”; report were the precursors to creating the Labrogenomics educational webinars and to write her upcoming book “The Iron Curse”. Her book “The Iron Curse”; is inspired by diagnosing her husband and many patients with hereditary hemochromatosis and iron-related health problems, and takes a deep dive into hemochromatosis and other iron-related disorders. Her husband’s hemochromatosis led to liver problems and likely led to the development of a pituitary tumor that caused Cushing’s disease. From her experience as a clinician, she has discovered that there is a silent epidemic of undiagnosed and untreated hemochromatosis, and this epidemic is being driven by myths, misperceptions, and a failure on the part of the medical community that should be diagnosing people with hemochromatosis: a disease that is easy to screen for, prevent, diagnose, and treat. “The Iron Curse”; course and upcoming book are powerful tools for ending the epidemic of undiagnosed and untreated hemochromatosis, and they give people the information they need to diagnose, prevent, and correct iron-induced damage. She has also created cutting-edge courses designed to help people learn more about labs, genes, and clinical pearls to optimize health. The topics include iron, gut health, immune health, Alzheimer’s, and methylation. Read my review of the Iron Curse - Iron Curse Book Review My previous Iron Overload podcast episode was number 169. Laughter as Medicine in Menopause
Did you know it is thought that the average child laughs about 400 times a day, but the average adult only laughs about 15 times a day? The Importance of Digestive Enzymes
The Importance of Digestive Enzymes As we age, many women will start to notice a change in their digestive ability. Signs that your digestive system isn’t optimally functioning include heartburn, burping, nausea, food intolerances, bloating, cramping, flatulence, and constipation. Several foods naturally contain digestive enzymes that can aid in the digestion process. Including these foods in your diet may help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Here are some examples of foods rich in digestive enzymes: APRICOTS - Apricots contain invertase, an enzyme that assists with carbohydrate digestion AVOCADOS - Avocados contain lipase, an enzyme that assists in the digestion of fats. BANANAS - Bananas contain amylase and maltase, adding in carbohydrate digestion GINGER - Ginger contains a protein-digesting enzyme called zingibain, but it also stimulates the body to increase its natural production of amylase and lipase helping to also break down carbohydrates and fats. HONEY - Raw unprocessed honey contains diastases, amylases, and invertase enzymes helpful in digesting carbohydrates plus a protease that aids in protein digestion. KIWI FRUIT - Kiwi Fruit contains a protease enzyme called actinidin, which breaks down protein. MANGOES - Mangos contain enzymes like amylase, which helps break down carbohydrates, and proteases that assist in protein digestion. PAPAYA - Papaya contains papain and this helps to digest protein. The riper the fruit the less papain is present. Best to eat green. PINEAPPLE - Pineapple contains bromelain, which is a protease enzyme meaning it aids in protein digestion. NUTS & SEEDS - Sprouting seeds and nuts activate enzymes that aid in the digestion of proteins and fats. Palpitations and the Menopausal Transition
Palpitations are not a pleasant sensation, woman experiencing them can actually feel their heart beating. For some, it is just the awareness of their heart at work, for others it feels like their heart is pounding, racing, or skipping a beat. Unfortunately, it's a common experience for many women in the menopausal transition. Research indicates that 42% of perimenopausal and 54% of post-menopausal women experience them. If with your palpitations you are also experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, chest tightening, or dizziness it's best to head to emergency. If not, then book an appointment with your regular doctor. They can check your medications, as some medications can cause palpitations, and they can investigate for other conditions such as hyperthyroidism that can also produce palpitations. And rule out other cardiovascular issues such as arrhythmias. Once you are cleared of anything more serious it's time to look at your diet and lifestyle. These factors increase the risk of palpitations: Blood sugar irregularities Dehydration and low electrolyte status Low Iron Anaemia Blood pressure issues Stress, anxiety, or panic. Being inactive Caffeine consumption Alcohol consumption Cigarette smoking or vaping Taking recreational drugs Left side sleeping Sleep apnea Full blog post - Palpitations and the Menopausal Transition Click here to learn about booking a consultation with Jen - https://www.menopausenaturalsolutions.com/consultations ____________________________________________________________ About Jennifer Harrington Jen is a Naturopath, Nutritionist, and Medical Herbalist. Sunshine Therapy for a Healthier Menopausal Transition
Humans evolved with the sun. Our ancestors spent most of their lives outside. The sun helped to provide warmth and rhythm to their days. Our planet also needs the sun, it plays a crucial role in providing light, weather, climate, seasons, and ocean currents. Plants require it for growth and photosynthesis. Yet, these days there is so much fear surrounding spending time in the sun. Yes, excessive time spent in the sun has negative effects, so it's once again about finding that magical middle. We need enough time spent outside to gain the health benefits but not too much time that you burn your skin. You may not realise how many different menopausal symptoms may be improved by sunshine therapy? The list includes reduced frequency and intensity of hot flushes, prevention of early menopause, improved sleep, reducing your stress response, more energy, better bones, happier moods, and more. Midlife Fatigue
Fatigue is a feeling of constant tiredness or weakness. It can be mental or physical or both. Although fatigue is constant, it can eb and flow, giving you good days and bad days but as a general rule, it interferes with your ability to perform day-to-day tasks. Fatigue is a symptom, it's not a disease itself but it can be an indication that something more serious may be going on. To reduce the sensation of fatigue, you first need to consider what your personal underlying cause or causes are and correct these first. Some common causes include: Poor Mitochondrial function Impaired cellular health Hormonal changes Adrenal dysfunction Thyroid dysfunction Poor sleep Blood sugar imbalances Chronic inflammation Digestive issues Toxicity and impaired liver function Cardiovascular issues Respiratory weakness Immune issues such as Chronic viral infections Mood disorders Nutrient deficiencies You can see it's a long list and it's not relevant for everyone but it is important to consider all of these in case they are a part of your symptom picture. Is Vitamin A good for the Menopausal Transition?
I’m often asked if Vitamin A is good for the menopausal transition. Spoiler alert YES it is very good. Even though it may not be the first vitamin most women think of in regard to menopause, it is one I highly value and often recommend. One of the key reasons I love Vitamin A is its ability to restore health to your mucus membranes. Think about all the areas of your body that could potentially become dry. Such as your vagina, your skin, your eyes, your mouth, your nasal passages, your lungs, and your digestive tract. If you need help with your menopausal transition consider booking a consultation. Brain fog, Fatigue and Cellular Health
Did you know the human body has over 37 trillion cells? Each of these cells has a membrane - the membrane has been nicknamed the brain of the cell as it controls a lot of what is happening for the cell. You need a healthy membrane if you want a healthy cell. Within your membrane, you have a phospholipid bilayer. Think of the phospholipid bilayer as a channel. It holds the structure of the cell, provides storage of fuel but most importantly it provides a communication link and allows the passage of nutrients in and toxins out. Phospholipids have many health benefits. They help with mental focus, brain function, energy production, healthy aging, cellular health, detoxification, and more.

Breast Health and Menopause
As you approach perimenopause, you may start to notice changes in your breasts. Some women discover lumps and bumps, others notice changes in size or texture, new sensitivity or discomfort. As your estrogen levels start to drop, you may notice your breasts start to shrink. This is because estrogen stimulates the glandular system for milk production. When you no longer need your breasts to be on standby for feeding, they may start to feel less dense, and this can lead to sagging. Breast Health article This episode discusses how to do a self-breast examination. The role the environment, your diet and lifestyle factors play in the health of your breast. Supplements and recommended testing is also mentioned. Foods that you used to be able to eat without concern are now making you feel sick. Food sensitivities, bloating, gas, heartburn, altered bowel movements, cramps, hemorrhoids, are becoming more common. On top of this, common symptoms related to menopause such as weight gain, mood swings, hormonal imbalances, sleep problems, fatigue, etc may actually be signs of digestive dysfunction rather than being related to your menopausal transition.
