Welcome to Kiwi Yarns - those yarns you have where you sit down, put the kettle on, pour a whiskey or crack open a beer I honestly don't mind. Anyway! We're sitting down and we’re yarning to some great New Zealanders, their back stories, their front stories, even stories where they went sideways, we will go there. It’s a place where we celebrate the great people of this glorious nation.
Edna Swart
There’s not a lot this fantastic young woman hasn’t done - she’s a businesswoman, entrepreneur, a mother, actress, reality star and a champion of women.
Edna Swart is proof that if you want something it’s up to you to get it, and the success of her business ED&i Body is testament to that.
Whether you agree or not with everything Edna says, you will absolutely learn something from her - I guarantee it.

Paddy Gower and Brodie Kane dissect their books...
This is a bit of a special episode of Kiwi Yarns where Brodie's good pal Paddy Gower comes in and they have a bit of a yarn about their books.
Best believe they play two truths and a lie, and see who wins the prize for reading a segment of the other person's book without laughing. There might be a teaser in there for book two, too.
But also, they have a bloody good kōrero about Paddy losing his job, getting a new job, and why he thinks the future of the media industry will be ok.

Lucy Blakiston + Bel Hawkins
We have two wonderful women on Kiwi Yarns this week - Lucy Blakiston and Bel Hawkins have just realised their stunning book, Make it Make Sense - a collection of essays, anecdotes, poems and lists.
But it's also kind of like a guide to life for women but not, if you know what I mean! And, it's the company you need when you're feeling alone in your thoughts. It's like reading your feelings, and it's also like your bestie giving you a hug in book form.
Lucy is the founder and CEO of Shit You Should Care About, and Bel is a published writer and poet, and they're both just stunning women - using their platforms for good.
It's hectic and chaotic and lovely.

Al Brown
Today’s guest is one of Aotearoa's favourite chefs, Al Brown (he's definitely one of my favourites).
The joy the fish sliders at Depot bring me, the simple brilliance of the Mean Joe Green Best Ugly Bagel which is compulsory whenever I am at Wellington Airport, and don’t even get me started on the chicken sandwich with chicken crackling at the Fed Deli.
Al's story is pretty intriguing. His honesty and vulnerability really moved me in this episode.

Morgana O'Reilly
This week we have the wonderfully talented and fabulous Morgana O'Reilly. We catch up on what it was like to work on one of the biggest shows in the world, The White Lotus.
Morgana talks about how excited she was to take on the role, but how imposter syndrome crept in, how she dealt with it, and how she's feeling about what life will be like when it comes out.
It's been a huge year for the actress, getting The White Lotus role, starring alongside Elijah Wood in Bookworm, and her brilliant performance in Friends Like Her. But you'll hear straight out the gate, she is VERY much like you and I, which will make you fall in love with her immediately.

Today’s guest is the most capped All Black in history.
Sam Whitelock made 153 appearances in the black jersey, went to four Rugby World Cups, winning two. He played in 181 Super Rugby Games, winning seven Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders.
Now, this monumental rugby chapter has closed. It’s beautifully reflected in Sam’s new book, View from the Second Row. We talk about that history-making career but also life after rugby and how he’s off with his wonderful wife Hannah and the kids to the farm in Hawke’s Bay. How good.

Harrison Keefe + Nepia Takuira-Mita
I cannot tell you how much joy actors Harrison Keefe and Nepia Takuira-Mita bring me every day. In a world where the internet - and in particular social media makes you feel like it’s all falling apart around you - the simple nature of the two lads “Come Vibe with Us” videos, where they stomp their feet and dance to absolute bangers is enough to level you right back out to peace again. Think of it like Kiwi Happy Feet. They're absolute treasures, funny as hell too!

Brodie recommends: The Trial - Philip Polkinghorne
Here's a podcast I'm wrapping my earholes around! On Easter Monday 2021, police were called to the home of a successful professional couple in the affluent Auckland suburb of Remuera. They found the body of Pauline Hanna.
In his emergency call, her husband, Philip Polkinghorne, said she killed herself. Sixteen months later he was charged with her murder. As this podcast is released, he's currently on trial at the High Court in Auckland.
Stuff's groundbreaking series returns to take you inside the Polkinghorne trial: Hear the witnesses, follow the evidence, wait for the verdict.

Sir John Key
Today’s guest is the former Prime Minister, Sir John Key.
The money trader-turned-politician-turned-board chair with a real passion for golf served as New Zealand’s 38th Prime Minister from 2008 until 2016.
Sir John’s famously been called a “rich prick” a “smiling assassin” and even “bland”. We discuss all of those names, why he's comfortable with his wealth, the most important lessons his mother taught him, yarns with Obama, the state of the world, and political regrets.

Chris Parker and Tom Sainsbury
What's better than Chris Parker, or Tom Sainsbury? Chris Parker AND Tom Sainsbury in the same room together on the same podcast.
Both have come on Kiwi Yarns individually, but they've achieved so much since then and are doing so many wonderful things that I thought we ought to sit them down together for a glorious catch up.
And they're such great mates! We decided their next venture should absolutely be a style-guide book - think New Zealand's Trinny and Susannah.
We talk about Tom being 75% gay and Buddhist and a queer sperm donor, and Chris crying throughout his wedding whilst suffering from gastro.
You'll feel like you're in the same room as them, which I felt very lucky to be!

Emma Twigg
Brodie's been unwell this week (winter!) so in her absence, we're re-upping an oldie but a goodie ahead of the Paris Olympics later this month.
Enjoy this episode from the archive with kiwi champion rower Emma Twigg and her amazing story about how it all went right on the day.
===
Olympic rowing champion Emma Twigg personifies a never-give-up attitude and we all were witness to that when she won Gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Many of us Kiwis cried when she crossed the finish line, because we felt the heartbreak she'd had with a fourth in London and another fourth in Rio. And this time, she'd done what she always knew she could do.
7/14/2024 • 39 minutes, 24 seconds
Shavaughn Ruakere
Today’s guest is actress and presenter Shavaughn Ruakere.
There are many reasons Kiwis love Shavaughn - whether it’s the nostalgia of What Now, the heartbreak of her beloved character Roimata being taken from us so tragically on Shortland Street (I'm still not ok about it), her stunning dancing on Dancing with the Stars, or calling out the Fboys on Fboy Island - she's lit up our screens for nearly two decades. She talks about how hard the hustle of acting is, and a new challenge she's been facing with perimenopause.

Mark Crysell
Today’s guest is award-winning journalist Mark Crysell.
I tell you one thing about award-winning journalists like Mark Crysell is they have GREAT stories to share. Like travelling to North Korea, working as Europe Correspondent for TVNZ and fighting for the little guy on Fair Go.
Mark is a wonderful storyteller, and puts a lot of it down to his love for adventure, connecting with people and being a chilled out surfer from Taranaki who used to go to school to eat his lunch and hang out with his mates.
We talk about the worrying media landscape in Aotearoa - after the show he's worked on for many years - Sunday - was scrapped by TVNZ earlier this year.

Dario Nustrini
Today’s guest is a man by the name of Dario Nustrini, who's just published a book called Nothing Significant to Report: The Misadventures of a Kiwi Soldier. I thought it would be great to compare Army notes with him! Dario joined after high school, where he describes himself as a young man who had been on a steady diet of spliffs, Speights and the occasional sandwich, weighing about as much as an empty pillowcase. Dario shares his tales in a self-deprecating and often humorous way, but he also speaks openly about the toll being deployed to Iraq took on him, and why he left the moment he got home.
6/16/2024 • 49 minutes, 6 seconds
Lil O'Brien
Today’s guest is Lil O'Brien - who has written books about coming out, and being childless.
Lil has bared her soul in the most remarkable and vulnerable way. Her first book, Not That I'd Kiss A Girl, is an incredibly moving "coming out" memoir, about her navigating her sexuality during her years at Otago University. Now she and two other amazing women have released Other Hood: Essays on being childless, childfree and child-adjacent.
This is a really important conversation, we do go deep. Just letting you know Lil shares her own story of loss, which we appreciate may be upsetting for some to hear. A range of organisations can help. For support around miscarriage and stillbirth click here

Chlöe Swarbrick returns

Last time we spoke it was just prior to the 2020 election and man, things have changed since then!
Chloe is now the co-leader of the Green Party, she's extremely vocal in opposition, and is grappling with what's been a tumultuous year for the party.
For someone who never intended pursuing a career in politics and allegedly described herself as “shy and introverted”, Chloe couldn’t be more in the thick of it if she tried.
People love her, people hate her, but you cannot knock her passion.

Matt Heath
Today’s guest is Matt Heath. Now, Matt Heath is genuinely one of my favourite straight white guys. I think he’s also someone who I would never call just Matt, he’s Matt Heath.
And while we usually drink, watch the Warriors and talk a mixture of serious and non-serious stuff - it’s been pretty cool to look back at all the things he’s achieved in his wildly hectic yet brilliant career. His latest achievement is a book - called A Life Less Punishing - 13 Ways To Love The Life You Got. Matt Heath says it’s a deep dive into the history, philosophy and science of not wasting our time lost in anger, loneliness, humiliation, stress, fear, boredom and all the other ways we find to not enjoy perfectly good lives.
A GLORIOUS chat.

Today’s guest is a very familiar face on our TV screens, the wonderful Entertainment Editor and Film Reviewer for Newshub - Kate Rodger.
She has been all over the world, interviewed the biggest actors in the world, and knows everything there is to know about the film industry. Kate has this divine voice and delivery style that lures you in - even if you didn’t like the movie she’s talking about, you’re entranced!
Kate also took a massive one for the team recently, and talked publicly about dealing with menopause.
This is such a fantastic conversation, thank you Kate xSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brianne West
Well I’m not mad about the fact that this week’s guest is yet another wonderful Kiwi success story - another brilliantly smart woman who’s made a name for herself on the global stage for all the right reasons.
Brianne West is the founder and former CEO of Ethique - the world’s first zero waste beauty brand.
As it stands, Ethique has prevented more than 28 million plastic bottles from beauty and household items from being made and disposed of in landfills.
Her next target? Plastic drink bottles. What a woman! She cannot be stopped and we shan't get in her way!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emma Lewisham
We absolutely love and celebrate success stories here at Kiwi Yarns, and today’s episode is no exception.
I have LOVED watching the rise of Emma Lewisham, since she and her stunning skincare products came on the scene in 2019. Now, Emma Lewisham is a global brand stocked at the likes of Mecca and Harrods, and stars are jumping over themselves to wear it.
A fascinating insight into the mind of an incredibly smart, super cool, and humble businesswoman.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sam Smith
Today’s guest is actually, quite possibly, the nicest man you’ll ever meet.
Sam Smith is a comedian, a writer, a musician (but not to be confused with the other Sam Smith haha), he’s a dentist (yes that's correct), an MC, AND he won this year’s first season of The Traitors alongside Anna Reeve.
Not only is Sam one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and has all those mad skills, he lives life with MS and he's legally blind.
But as you'll hear - he lets NOTHING slow him down. I am lucky to call him a friend and find him so damn inspirational. You'll love this one.

Jono Lester
Today’s guest quite possibly could’ve learnt to drive before he walked…
Third generation driver Jono Lester hails from mighty Palmerston North and was born and raised at the Manfield circuit - set up and operated by his family. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and aunty. It’s like he has petrol in his veins!
It's fascinating hearing about the highs and lows of his career thus far, and what he's learnt along the way.
Hear about how happy he is back racing home with FHK Racing - the New Zealand GT racing team - and their grand plans!
Fun facts: he had his first crash when he was nine, and he's also an ultra marathon runner.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ellie Fitzgerald - or Loving Ellies Belly as she’s known on Instagram and TikTok - is someone that can put a smile on your face daily while also reminding you life doesn’t revolve around your fat rolls or what you look like in the mirror.

Today’s guest is a beautiful, talented young woman who, despite the fact she cannot "smile", brings smiles to the faces of thousands every single day.
Tayla Clement is 26-years young and has Moebius syndrome - a one-in-4-million condition.
Tayla is not shy of discussing how brutally tough her life has been dealing with all that has come with this.
What’s epic to see is the amazing mahi she is doing as a rugby content creator and hosting her own podcast Toe the Line.
Tayla is on a mission to make the sporting arena more inclusive and we are absolutely here for that!

David Farrier
Reposting one of my favourite chats this week!
I've been hanging out to chat with investigative journalist and documentary maker David Farrier for a while now, so this big long decent yarn, best dissected with a long walk or maybe even a nice drink (or both haha).
From his hilarious TV3 sign off from back in the day, to chasing Mongolian Death Worms, interviewing Colin Craig in the sauna, to now spending a lot of time looking into conspiracy theories - this guy is just so interesting and awesome.

Tammy Wells - The Briscoes Lady!
Reposting a couple of my faves this week!
Today's guest is quite simply, a national treasure.
Tammy Wells is someone we all feel like we have a connection with, she is pretty much part of our furniture...and of course the Briscoes furniture too.
Tammy is the woman who, with a big warm smile, delights us with that welcome news that Briscoes is indeed having a sale.
She's been the Briscoes Lady for a remarkable 32 years - and still loves every minute of it.
Oh how delightful this yarn is!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Clint Roberts
Today’s guest is one of our talented radio broadcasters, and even though he’s still super young it feels like he’s been around the industry for years!
Clint Roberts' success has a lot to do with his glorious-natured personality - plus he's a great champion of women in the industry.
He’s also an extremely proud dad of two beautiful daughters - and recently launched a parenting podcast with another super cool dad - How to Dad (Jordan Watson) - called The Parenting Hangover.

Art Green
Today’s guest was New Zealand's first Bachelor.
Back in 2015, Art Green was thrust into the spotlight, where he spent a good chunk of time on television without his shirt on, he got to pash a whole bunch of lovely ladies and got called super cliché things like a “heart throb”. And then, he fell in love on the show with Matilda, he picked her and it really was the start of something special.
Now Art and Matilda are happily married, living a delightful life in Warkworth with their third child on the way. He now HOSTS the Bachelor/Bachelorette, he’s a really awesome advocate in the health and fitness space (the good side of it too may I add), and he really loves gardening, and cooking massive bits of meat on the barbecue.
He is also - as I discovered - a former Guinness World Record Holder!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nichole is the CEO of the Property Lifestyle which she describes as her “dream job”. As we’ll hear, she's had an extremely interesting life and really challenging career - including coming painstakingly close to bankruptcy - pretty much losing everything around the Global Financial Crisis.
She bounced back, having to start all over again, and now spends a good chunk of her time sharing that knowledge and learnings with others. A really eye-opening listen!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today’s guest is one of the nicest guys in the music business. And when I say nice, I mean cool, kick-arse, bad-arse, delightful, ridiculously talented and extremely down to earth - all at the same time!
All those things have led Mitch James to where he is today - he's just absolutely smashed out his first-ever headline world tour - performing 50 shows across 15 countries - unreal.

Kelly Hutton
Today’s guest is a wonderful woman I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for the past three years. During that time Kelly Hutton - one of the OG Canterbury Flames netballers - has been living with stage three Ovarian Cancer. She’s beaten it twice - but was told at the start of August that she’s got just weeks to live.
Kelly and I first met when she won a charity auction helicopter skydive with me, and we have kept in touch ever since. She has a passion for living life and really has pulled the middle finger at her cancer. Since diagnosed she's done half marathons, jumped out of helicopters, walked some of our beautiful walks and got a good chunk of the way through cycling across Aotearoa before she got sick again.
Now, she really is out of time, and this may very well be the last time I speak to her. We were messaging and she asked if I was open to doing a Kiwi “end of” Yarn - she said we Kiwis don’t tend to talk that much about the end of life and “this sort of shit enough”, so could we hit one final spot together and change a bit of the world.
We'll miss you Kel, but we are so lucky to have had you in our world.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Staff Sergeant Bob Pearce is a former Intelligence Operator with both the British Army and New Zealand Army.
You'll hear how Bob is looking ahead to the Invictus Games to open a new chapter - 20 years after his good friend was killed in a blue on blue incident in Iraq by US Forces.

I’m so looking forward to this kōrero with Theresa Gattung - a woman who smashed through the glass ceiling and became the first female CEO of an NZX-listed company - Telecom NZ at 37-years old.
She has held multiple roles with huge success - including co-founding My Food Bag.
But so much of Theresa’s mahi is centred around helping girls and women find their seat at the table - wherever that table may be and whatever that table might look like.

Resharing this yarn because LANCE SAVALI.
I’ve been wanting to interview Lance Savali for AGES! He's a hard one to pin down, because you know, he's dancing his way around the world. Just to rattle off some low key performances: with Beyonce at Coachella, J-Lo at the Superbowl, Rihanna for Savage X Fenty - no big deal right?
And he does it all with a heart condition. Unreal. He's so cool. And he taught me a TikTok hahaha!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jo Kane on swimming the Cook Strait.
Resharing this one because it's an incredible story!
What did you to celebrate your 40th birthday? Well Jo Kane (aka my Mum) decided that it would be the year she would swim the Cook Strait. It's an amazing story, considering she first set her sights on the notorious piece of water at age 16. Jo talks about the endurance training and mental toughness she built up over many years, and how she was able to turn around and complete the swim just weeks after a failed attempt. And recently she made the brave and awesome decision to go out on her own. A massive 42 years dedicated to New Zealand Police - which included David Bain’s retrial, NZ police investigator during the Bali Bombings, and arresting one of the country’s most wanted criminals and prison escapee Bryan Curtis in the Philippines in 2002 (that's a yarn right out of the movies).

Jono Ridler
Today’s guest is the ultra marathon swimmer Jono Ridler.
Now if you're wondering, ultra-marathon swimming generally means a 20 kilometre or greater swim. In other words a really really long swim.
Well, Jono has just absolutely blown that out of the water (I’m not apologising for that pun) and swum 99.1 kilometres across the Hauraki Gulf. It’s the longest solo-unassisted open-water swim in New Zealand history.
And, he didn’t do it for the accolades or for the record books, he did it to raise awareness of the dire state the Hauraki Gulf is in. Quite an extreme way to get a point across but he nailed the assignment!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paddy Gower
Today’s guest is one of the country’s most high profile journalists. Paddy Gower is fiercely passionate about telling stories and has been that way for over 20 years. His dogged determination to get to the bottom of issues here in Aotearoa is something to behold, and he certainly hasn't been afraid to piss anyone off along the way. But what Paddy also has which makes him so good is empathy, and what makes him unique is he isn’t afraid to completely immerse himself in the story - which this year resulted in him staging his own intervention, and getting off the booze - in front of the nation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daniel Jones
Today’s guest is an ultra marathon runner like me (haha I can say that now)! But Daniel Jones just won the Kepler Challenge - a 60 kilometre mountain run in Fiordland at the weekend for the FIFTH year in a row. And, while it was the same race I did, he was SIX hours faster. Now, I’m not beating myself up about that at all, I’m saying it to highlight what an absolute weapon Daniel is. This, after winning the Queenstown Marathon two weeks prior and the Auckland Marathon a few weeks before that, for the third year in a row. He’s out of control, so let’s hear how he moves so damn quick.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today’s guest is a very very dear friend of mine, Casie Bowry. We grew up doing surf life saving together, our Mums grew up doing surf life saving together - we've been friends a very long time.
Casie was a top water polo player representing New Zealand for many years, and was fast becoming a very well respected police officer. In 2018, life was ticking along nicely.
But in March of that same year Casie fell very ill, and was diagnosed with an extremely rare autoimmune disease, NMNDA Encephalitis. Essentially, her body was attacking her brain.
Casie was in hospital for over two years - including one whole year in ICU.
I, at times, did not think she would survive. And even when I thought she just might, I didn't think she would ever get her life back. She was so sick.

The man who can comfortably sit in a board room, deal with the Government but also go to a gang pad is making massive changes to people's lives through Buttabean Motivation, or BBM.

Amazingly, for his first feature length he managed to secure award-winning actress Charlotte Rampling to travel across the world to play Ruth, the alcoholic Grandmother.

David Farrier
I've been hanging out to chat with investigative journalist and documentary maker David Farrier for a while now, so this big long decent yarn, best dissected with a long walk or maybe even a nice drink (or both haha).
From his hilarious TV3 sign off from back in the day, to chasing Mongolian Death Worms, interviewing Colin Craig in the sauna, to now spending a lot of time looking into conspiracy theories - this guy is just so interesting and awesome.

He’s smart, he’s bloody funny and Joe is basically taking on everything - which is awesome to watch unfold.

Honestly, if you don’t walk away from today’s episode with a cup so full it’s overflowing, I’ll give you your money back (lol).
Seriously though, this young woman is such a beautiful soul, an amazing role model and someone pretty brave to open up and share her story - the good, the bad, the funny and the sad.
Jess Quinn has achieved so much, and can now add book author to her long list of awesomeness.

We have two guests who are multi-sport legends.
Simone Maier (2x Coast to Coast Longest Day Winner) and Emily Wilson (2019 GODZone winner with Simone) have had their fair share of success in endurance and adventure racing - their mental toughness, grit and determination is very inspiring.
How cool then, that Simone and Emily have decided to pass on all their knowledge and experience to others - particularly women - so they can grow to be better versions of themselves. I am so here for that.

Siobhan has just featured on the global stage as part of a series called “We The 15”, which is sport’s biggest ever human rights movement to end discrimination. It aims to transform the lives of the world’s 1.2 billion people with disabilities who represent 15% of the global population.

Dr Nikki Turner on the COVID Vaccine
This episode is a bit different. It is still a great New Zealander, there’s no two ways about that. Today’s guest is Dr Nikki Turner, director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre, an academic General Practitioner and an Associate Professor in
the Division of General Practice and Primary Health Care, University of Auckland. Dr Nikki Turner is here to talk about the COVID Vaccine.
I, like many, have become extremely concerned at the level of misinformation, rumours, lies, hearsay - you catch my drift - about Covid and in particular, around the vaccine rollout. I’m concerned and scared that scientists and experts aren’t being listened to, but your Mum’s cousin’s Aunt on Facebook is, or the Yoga influencer on Instagram has miraculously overnight become more qualified than an epidemiologist.
We are, without doubt, in a terribly uncertain and scary time, but that should be all the more reason to listen to the advice of people whose job it is to keep us healthy, keep us safe.
I wanted to use my platform in a way that gives you one of these people, gives you the answers, gives you clarity and certainty. God knows that is what we all need right now.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today’s guest is one of my favourite Kiwi actors, and I think it would be fair to say anyone around my age who grew up watching Shortland Street every night in the 90s with Claire Chitham playing the wonderful Waverley would have a similar fondness! In short, he’s one of the greatest endurance athletes in the world. And when I say endurance, I mean races that last for DAYS.
Nathan and his teammates have won six Adventure Racing World Champion titles, and he's been involved in so many other amazing races all around the world.

Today’s guest is such a phenomenal woman who I had the pleasure of meeting in 2018 when I ran my first ever marathon, raising money for the CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust. Catriona Williams is the founder and driving force behind the charity - which supports researchers in the bid for a cure for spinal cord injuries. Catriona was one of the country’s leading international equestrian riders - but a serious riding accident in 2002, left her a C6/C7 tetraplegic and confined to a wheelchair. Pic Picot of Pic's Peanut Butter!
Today's guest makes something in a jar that brings so much joy to so many Kiwis, including my own mother who I have seen scoop it out of the jar with a spoon on MANY occasions!
Pic Picot is the man behind Pic's Peanut Butter, which has become a bit of a national treasure. The funny thing is, Pic only started making peanut butter when he'd retired, in order to make a couple of hundred bucks a week. Now, Pic's Peanut Butter World (the factory in Nelson) pumps out 25,000 jars a day, destined for all parts of the globe.
What's even funnier is the successful recipe was a fluke! Absolutely great chats with a great Kiwi!

Guled Mire
Guled Mire is coming to us from New York, after winning a Fulbright Award to study at the Ivy League-listed Cornell University. Not a bad achievement for a young man who dropped out of school at the age of 16 after being told university wasn't really for people like him. The former refugee drew on the strength from his mother - who as a solo parent, fled Somalia in the midst of civil war with her nine children, spent time in a refugee camp in Kenya before bringing her family to New Zealand for a better life.
But what does "better life" in New Zealand actually mean? Unfortunately for Guled and so many other refugees here, it's just not that straight-forward.
So, Guled has drawn on his own experiences to become a leader, a role model, a man who works extremely hard to ensure ethnic youth of refugee and migrant backgrounds have a voice and every opportunity they can in New Zealand. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ruth's running journey is a fascinating one in which she admits over the course of her career she has fallen in and out of love with it on more than one occasion. It's a fascinating look into what goes into training for such a massive race. What's next you ask? But, that very trick would a few weeks later change his life - Brad took a heavy crash trying to land it - and broke his neck so badly he was left quadriplegic. Jehan has just released a book called "This is Not How it Ends", in which he talks openly about his deep struggle with depression, despite all that “success”. So a warning, we will be discussing mental health and suicide during this episode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ali Mau
This week's guest is a great woman of formidable intelligence and tenacity, who I am very fortunate enough to call my friend and mentor. I remember 7 or 8 years ago when the broadcasting legend that is Ali Mau took the time out of her day to help me learn how to do a piece to camera (when a television reporter speaks directly to the audience through the camera) at TVNZ - a place where Ali worked as a top presenter and journalist for 20 years. Now, Ali is a senior journalist at Stuff, and editor of the #metooNZ project, investigating sexual harassment in New Zealand workplaces.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Angela Bloomfield
In the 90s I pretty much watched Angela Bloomfield play Rachel McKenna every night on Shortland Street - she has been an integral part of the show since 1993 and it was extremely interesting hearing how it all started for her, and Ange also shares some pretty big challenges she faced along the way. She's just embarked on a pretty significant career change, becoming a real estate agent. A truly delightful chat with a great woman.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chlöe Swarbrick
Chlöe Swarbrick - the young woman who ran for Mayor of Auckland at age 22, the young woman who at 23, become the youngest MP in New Zealand for over 40 years at the 2017 election. The young woman who is often reminded about how young she is, especially when she’s surrounded by politicians who are well, old (ok ok not all, but heaps are haha). No matter where your vote is going this election, Chlöe is a breath of fresh air in the political world. The energy and drive she throws at the job is pretty epic, and she's a cool person to yarn to as well!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bryce Casey
It's Mental Health Awareness Week here in New Zealand so a warning: we will be discussing issues around mental health including suicide. My guest is Bryce Casey - a man who has done a remarkable job in this country at opening up about mental health struggles and by doing so has helped drop the stigma around talking about such a complicated issue. He’s also a very funny, talented broadcaster with a gorgeous family and is armed with some cracking yarns having worked at The Rock radio station for 20 years!

Raf Manji
Raf Manji is a man who throws his heart and soul into the work he does. The former London investment banker and Christchurch City Councillor has spent the past 18 months working in a voluntary capacity directly with the victims and families of the March 15 Terror Attack in Christchurch - in what he describes as his hardest job to date. His next goal is to get fairer financial support for the victims which involves knocking loudly on the Government’s door. Raf is genuinely one of those people the world really bloody well needs right now - I could’ve recorded this episode for hours more!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jo Kane on swimming the Cook Strait
What did you to celebrate your 40th birthday? Well Jo Kane (aka my Mum) decided that it would be the year she would swim the Cook Strait. It's an amazing story, considering she first set her sights on the notorious piece of water at age 16. Jo talks about the endurance training and mental toughness she built up over many years, and how she was able to turn around and complete the swim just weeks after a failed attempt. And yes, there's a shark in this story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tanya Carlson
Tanya Carlson has been a dominant fashion designer in New Zealand for over 20 years. One of the main reasons she has been successful for so long is because she's not afraid to move/pivot/change (you catch my drift) her label along with the ever-evolving fashion industry. Tanya remembers wanting to be involved in fashion as a young girl, dressing up to do her after-school chores - so it's no wonder she's one of the country's great fashion gems.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paula Bennett
Paula Bennett is literally sitting in the departure lounge waiting to walk out of a hugely successful 15 year career - a delayed election means she's having to hang on in there just a little longer. But she's pumped about her next career move (which she can't quite tell us about yet) and is well and truly done with politics. But we share some great laughs about her time in Parliament and talk about the highs and lows - even the time someone told her her bare legs weren't acceptable! And her pick for three MP's to be stranded on a desert island with is quite interesting too!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hamish Pinkham and his Rhythm and Vines team have just announced their line up for the three day festival in Gisborne at New Year's Eve. Here's the thing - 90% of tickets for this year sold out mere weeks after the 2019/20 festival had finished, and all tickets were gone before a single act was released. What's the secret? Well, Hamish talks through the 17 festivals that have got them to where they are today - and why now more than ever people can't get enough of R&V. There's a couple of great artists yarns in there too! Never been to a festival? This might just hook you in...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Joseph Parker
Joseph Parker is one of New Zealand's favourite sportspeople and it's not necessarily entirely down to his stellar boxing career. The former WBO Heavyweight Champ's humble and kind nature has been something that has set him apart from his opponents. He doesn't need a flashy entrance to a fight to prove who he is. Joseph also got himself a bit of a name this year for his hugely creative, very funny lockdown videos - and even admits he'd love to dabble in a bit of acting. He talks the challenges of being in such uncertain times this year, and how family has helped him get to where he is today. Oh yeah, and Joseph's never been to Hobbiton.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hilary Barry
I have to admit a major bias towards this guest, because Hilary Barry has been a mentor to me over the years and during our last stint working together on Breakfast she was like my big sister. She's one of the country's most talented and loved broadcasters, through her utmost professionalism while on air, but also because it's so easy to see she cares. She's extremely hard working and passionate about what she does, but taught me a thing or to about leaving work at the door. In her spare time she loves to go out walking, but apparently has a weird walking style so look out for that!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rob Nichol is the man behind the rugby players in New Zealand. He was a massive part of successfully bringing women's rugby into line with the men's conditions. But not just rugby, Rob has been an integral part of helping all types of professional sports people know their worth. Add to that, he was once a police officer, is a qualified accountant, and does ridiculously crazy adventure racing - the past two years he's hauled himself across the South Island in the Coast to Coast with a rugby player you might have heard of - Richie McCaw. Comedian Tom Sainsbury is the guy that makes you sit on your phone laughing and cackling because his Snapchat characters are that damn good. His impersonations of people - from politicians to everyday New Zealanders - are so spot on that sometimes, they are more accurate than the actual person. Tom is also an incredibly talented actor, writer, producer, director and talks about the joys and challenges of working in the industry here in New Zealand. Tim Lightbourne - Invivo Wines
Two guys were sitting in a pub in London in 2008...over a couple of beers they decided they wanted to take New Zealand wine to the world. They came home and slowly chipped away at Invivo Wines. With an amazing crowdfunding success story, Tim Lightbourne and Rob Cameron then reached new heights by getting Graham Norton to drink their wine on his show. Monty Betham has had a stunning sporting career in Rugby League and Boxing but it's perhaps his outlook on life and the simplicity of getting out of bed with the right attitude that intrigued me the most. Nikki Kaye talks about how getting breast cancer in 2016 completely changed how she now operates as a politician and what motivates her to do what she does in a job many of us would stay well clear of.
