Scott Santens - UBI Advocate and Author of Let There Be Money

About the Book: What is money? How is it created? What's the point of taxes and how should they be implemented? Are federal deficits bad for the economy? Would abolishing poverty lead to higher inflation? Is inflation something to avoid? These are just some of the questions Scott Santens explores in order to answer the biggest question of all about the concept of universal basic income (UBI) and virtually all government spending in general: "How do we pay for it?"Utilizing modern monetary theory (MMT), Santens leads readers through a fascinating journey. He connects the economic dots in a way everyone can understand in order to clearly see the big picture that is humanity's relationship to money and what's truly possible with it if used to its maximum potential. With a shift from money-based thinking to resource-based thinking, Santens masterfully communicates the need for MMT to be embraced by policymakers, and the need for MMT advocates to embrace UBI and evidence-based policymaking. MMT's incorporation of UBI provides us the means to finally build an economy that works for everyone, built with a mindset of abundance on an unconditional foundation of human rights and opportunity for all.

Tracy Heather Strain - Director, Producer, Writer, Researcher & Educator; Director of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Presents Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Presents Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space - a new in-depth biography of the influential author whose groundbreaking anthropological work would challenge assumptions about race, gender and cultural superiority that had long defined the field in the 19th century. Directed by Tracy Heather Strain, produced by Randall MacLowry and executive produced by Cameo George. Tracy is based in Middletown, Connecticut, and though she interested in many things, she spends much of her time making films. She is drawn to individual stories that reveal the ways that race, gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality work to shape lives and reflect and challenge society’s historical, artistic, political and cultural narratives. Her films in the series Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?, Race: The Power of an Illusion and I’ll Make Me a World: A Century of African American Arts serve as early exemplars. She is presently in post-production for the 2-hour feature film Zora Neale Hurston, which will premiere in early 2023 on the PBS series American Experience. With Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart, the first feature film about Lorraine Hansberry, she incorporated my 35-year practice, rooted in discovering, researching and directing new and often unknown stories to advance social justice, build community and empower the marginalized into a documentary described by Robin D. G. Kelley as “a gorgeous visual love letter…in its brilliance, honesty, and vision.” After its premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, the documentary subsequently won several awards including a Peabody and NAACP Image Award for directing.  She makes my documentaries through The Film Posse, the production company she co-founded with her partner and colleague Randall MacLowry. My next independent project is Survival Floating, a hybrid documentary investigating African-descended peoples’ relationships with swimming. A faculty member at Wesleyan University, she is the Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies, Associate Professor of Film Studies, Associate Director of the College of Film and the Moving Image and Co-Director of the Wesleyan Documentary Project.

Jason Wilson - Founder of The Cave of Adullam

ESPN Films’ “The Cave of Adullam,” Executive Produced by Laurence Fishburne. The film, which won the “Best Documentary Feature” at the Tribeca Festival, tells Inspirational Story of Jason Wilson’s Dojo in Detroit. ESPN Films’ latest documentary “The Cave of Adullam” is currently available to stream on ESPN+. Directed by Academy Award & Emmy nominated filmmaker Laura Checkoway (“Edith+Eddie,” “Lucky”), the documentary tells the story of Jason Wilson and the transformational training academy he runs for young Black boys. With his mantra, “it’s easier to raise boys than repair broken men,” Wilson’s methodology teaches emotional stability instead of discipline, setting these children on a path to become whole and healthy adults. When Wilson started his dojo, he thought young Black boys needed more discipline, but quickly realized what they needed was more love. The film introduces us to four young recruits who are at a crossroads. Wilson challenges each of them to confront their unresolved anger, fear, anxiety, and lack of focus as they face the toughest decisions of their young lives. Wilson, who serves as co-producer on the film, is the author of “Battle Cry” and Amazon best-seller, “Cry Like a Man: Fighting for Freedom from Emotional Incarceration,” a memoir that follows the generational abuse, abandonment, and emotional suppression of Wilson’s family and the redemptive power of God through tears, vulnerability, and ultimately healing. The Cave of Adullam has garnered numerous acknowledgments and awards for its work teaching boys how to confront and conquer their negative emotions with composure introspectively.

Derrick Barnes - Author of Victory. Stand! – Raising My Fist For Justice

About the Book: On October 16, 1968, during the medal ceremony at the Mexico City Olympics, Tommie Smith, the gold medal winner in the 200-meter sprint, and John Carlos, the bronze medal winner, stood on the podium in black socks and raised their black-gloved fists to protest racial injustice inflicted upon African Americans. Both men were forced to leave the Olympics, received death threats, and faced ostracism and continuing economic hardships. In his first-ever memoir for young readers, Tommie Smith looks back on his childhood growing up in rural Texas through to his stellar athletic career, culminating in his historic victory and Olympic podium protest. Cowritten with Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Author Honor recipient Derrick Barnes and illustrated with bold and muscular artwork from Emmy Award–winning illustrator Dawud Anyabwile, Victory. Stand! paints a stirring portrait of an iconic moment in Olympic history that still resonates today.  Bio: Derrick Barnes wrote the New York Times bestseller The King of Kindergarten, as well as the critically acclaimed picture book Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut (illustrated by Gordon James), which received a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Author Honor, the 2018 Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award, and the 2018 Kirkus Prize for Young Readers. He also wrote the bestselling chapter book series Ruby and the Booker Boys. He owns the copy-writing company Say Word Creative Communications and created the popular blog Raising the Mighty, where he "chronicles the experience of bringing up four beautiful Black boys in America." He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife and their four sons.

EJ Reed - CEO of Slim + Husky’s & Clint Gray - CMO of Slim + Husky’s

Slim & Husky's was ranked #5 out of 101 in The Daily Meal's 101 Best Pizzas in America. They have been featured on CBS World News, Good Morning America, and Travel Channel. They have also been featured in USA Today, Essence Magazine, Southern Living, Food & Wine, Forbes Magazine, the Washington Post, Taste of the South, and the New York Times. The three Tennessee State University grads and football players (Clint Gray – CMO, Derrick Moore- Chief Development Officer & EJ Reed – CEO) started Slim + Husky's as a way to serve unique pies and provide jobs to their neighborhood in North Nashville. Now, they have expanded locations across the country and offer build-your-own pizzas, take-out options, catering services, and national delivery. This includes opening the first Black-owned restaurant to open on Broadway in Nashville. “Pizza. Art. Music” is the motto at Slim & Husky’s, which was created to create change and opportunities within underserved communities. Crowds flock to its four Tennessee locations (as well as two in Atlanta and one in Sacramento with additional locations opening throughout 2023) to indulge in artisan pizza while vibing to Hip Hop and R&B classics. In the beginning,Slim & Husky’s was founded on a shared dream inside a garage in 2015. The clever name came from a joke the longtime friends have been laughing about for years. One of them has always been a slim guy, but the other two were always big fellas, forcing their mothers to shop for clothing in the children’s husky section. The 3 owners consider their biggest accomplishments as opening the first Slim & Husky’s restaurant in their North Nashville neighborhood, the ability to provide a substantial number of jobs, and the ability to live out their dream while providing a real impact on their communities. When the owners aren’t perfecting their product, they are hosting community events and participating in speaking engagements at local schools, nonprofits, small businesses, and organizations. From hosting events to support local artists to honoring area teachers, they strive to recognize and promote positivity wherever they go.  slimandhuskys.com

Sarah Jones - Tony Award-Winning Writer, Performer, & Comedian

Sarah is making her directorial debut when her new film Sell/Buy/Date - will be releasing in theaters in LA on October 14th, NYC on October 21st, and streaming in November on Amazon Prime.  Details: Through interviews and monologues, the film poses the question: How can we as a society have a healthy relationship to sex, power, race and our economy, without exploitation or stigma? Sell/Buy/Date creatively tackles the complex subject of the sex industry and expands upon Jones’ acclaimed 2016 off-Broadway solo production of the same name. Jones plays herself, along with four different onscreen characters including a young college student and an 80-something grandmother.  From Los Angeles to Vegas and all the way to New York City, Jones and her many characters navigate an issue that is ever prevalent but rarely spoken about. Unafraid to ask difficult questions, she explores the industry’s relationship with race, power and economics along with her own connection to it. Jones probes the subject matter with candor as she takes viewers on a roller-coaster journey full of humor and emotion, while exposing truth and tragedy within the industry.

Her active treatment in 2016 consisted of a lumpectomy, Chemotherapy, Radiation, and two reconstruction surgeries.   While in treatment, Marissa turned to social media to connect with other women and find stories similar to hers in hopes of making the journey easier. Being a private person, it was hard for Marissa to face the realities and harshness of breast cancer while trying to remain positive for those around her. But, at the urging of a close friend and fellow breast cancer survivor, Cristina, Marissa finally opened up publicly, showing the beauty and rawness of breast cancer.  Marissa's passion is to help anyone who comes behind her and has to fight this horrible disease. Focusing primarily on women of color, educating them on navigating the healthcare system and defining life after cancer. She wants women to know they can "continue living your best life, regardless of the circumstance." She teamed up with a friend and fellow breast cancer survivor, Jasmine Souers, and co-founded the first online community for women of color called For the Breast of Us(FTBOU). FTBOU is the first organization to lead with an inclusive spirit for all women of color, all ages, ethnicities, and sizes. The reality of breast cancer gets even more nuanced when broken down into the communities within the communities of color. For example, African-American women are more likely than women of other races to develop triple-negative breast cancer, associated with poorer short-term prognosis, and represent only 6.2% of cancer clinical trials. Hispanic women are more likely than non-Hispanic white women to be diagnosed with tumors that are larger and are hormone receptor-negative, both of which are more difficult to treat; they represent only 2.2% of cancer clinical trials. Asian and Pacific Islander women, whose incidents of breast cancer have been rising, represent only 3.3% of cancer clinical trials.

Daniel Medwed - University Distinguished Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at Northeastern University; Author of BARRED: Why the Innocent Can’t Get Out of Prison

In BARRED,Medwed reveals how convoluted legal procedures—essentially technicalities—make exonerations nearly impossible. The rules surrounding litigation after conviction are extremely complex, with narrow guidelines on how much time a defendant has to submit notice of an appeal, which court to file in, and whether they will be allowed to present new evidence or to raise errors that occurred at the initial trial. Because of deferential attitudes toward lower courts, higher courts also tend to uphold convictions, even when there is compelling evidence of a miscarriage of justice. With heart-wrenching stories of people who have been wrongfully convicted, BARRED  makes a powerful call for change.  Bio: Daniel Medwed has spent more than twenty years in the field of criminal justice, serving as a public defender, as cofounder of a law school clinic that investigated post-conviction innocence claims, and now as a professor advocating for justice reform. He’s seen firsthand the deep-seated issues that plague the criminal process, namely how the system is complicit in putting innocent people behind bars. There are convictions that rest on dubious eyewitnesses. Possible police misconduct that goes uninvestigated. Subpar performance from overworked, even if well-meaning, defense attorneys.A renowned innocence advocate, he is the author of Prosecution Complex: America’s Race to Convict and Its Impact on the Innocent.

Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi - Biomedical Informatician, Professor & Author of Jollof Rice & Other Revolutions

About the Book: Nonso, Remi, Aisha, and Solape meet as young, impressionable students at an all-girls boarding school, quickly forming a lifetime bond when they stand up to an older girl’s attempt at hazing. Their sisterhood is soon challenged, however, when they participate in a school rebellion, the uprising causing repercussions that will forever change their lives. Traversing Nigeria, Europe, and America, spanning a century and a half, and showcasing the women and men who shaped these young girl’s lives, Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions offers a window into the world of these accomplished Nigerian women, illuminating their trials and tribulations as they attempt to control their destinies.   Nonso’s step-grandmother, Adaoma, faced with infertility, takes matters into her hands when she amasses a fortune, acquiring a wife to create a family of her own. Decades later, Nonso also grapples with fertility issues after she moves to the United States and falls in love with an African-American man. Remi’s future husband, Segun, has an encounter with the police in the Bronx; but his strength, and the lessons he learned from his father, help him carry on. He offers support to Remi through her traumatic struggles with her father. Aisha can’t seem to leave her guilt from the aftermath of the boarding school rebellion behind, letting it influence her career and relationship choices—until her son’s life is on the line and she makes a momentous decision to redefine her legacy by saving him.   Illuminating the ties of friendship, the tangled bonds of family, the isolation of being an immigrant, and the need for belonging, Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions offers a nuanced portrait of these women as they look back in their attempts to move forward.  Bio: Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi was born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria. A finalist for the 2009 PEN/Studzinski Award (published in New Writing from Africa 2009, a collection of PEN/Studzinski Award finalists’ stories), her stories have been published in Ploughshares and listed in The Best American Short Stories 2018. Her poetry has appeared in the Massachusetts Review, the Indiana Review and Wasafiri. Howard Yaruss - Economist, NYU professor, Attorney, Businessman, Activist, and Author of Understandable Economics

About the Book: Incomes are stagnating, middle-class jobs are disappearing, economic growth is slowing, and the meager gains are mostly going to those who are already wealthy. More Americans than ever are frustrated by the direction in which we are headed. Understandable Economics by HowardYaruss (published by Prometheus Books, September 2022) aims to replace this frustration with a practical understanding of our economy and empower readers to identify and advocate for a better approach to the problems we face.   Understandable Economics is an engaging and essential read for anyone seeking a better understanding of our economy.  The book breaks down our economic system in a straightforward way, avoiding jargon, formulas, graphs, and other technical material so common in books on this subject.  Instead, the book creates a compelling and comprehensive picture of our economy using accessible analogies, real-world observations, and entertaining anecdotes enabling readers to answer questions such as: Why is inequality soaring and what can we do about it? Do tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs or just create more inequality? Where does money come from, why does it have value, and who controls it? What does the Fed do and how does it affect our lives? Is our national debt a threat? Why do so many people believe free trade is good if it causes some people to lose jobs? Bio: Howard Yaruss is an economist, professor, attorney, businessman, and activist who greatly enjoys explaining complex issues in a clear, interesting and easily accessible way. He has taught a variety of courses on economics and business, and currently teaches at New York University. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Radian Group, one of the largest guarantors of debt in the world. He has also served on the Boards of organizations that advocate for safer streets, help the homeless and support the arts. Yaruss graduated from Brown University, studied at the London School of Economics and earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Manhattan and serves on his local community board. Visit: http://understandableeconomics.us/

Skyh Alvester Black - Star of BET’s ‘All The Queen’s Men’

This year, Skyh returns as leading man Amp ‘Addiction’ Anthony on season two of Tyler Perry’s smash-hit, male exotic dancer drama series “All the Queen’s Men” on BET.  The show follows Madam DeVille (Eva Marcille), a fierce businesswoman at the top of her game in the Atlanta nightclub industry who won’t let anyone stand in her way as she reigns over a crew of loyal dancers.  Skyh is a scene stealer as Madam’s nephew and employee, who evolves in an exciting & electrifying season two storyline that pushes his character’s limits to the next level.  “All the Queen’s Men” is set to return on BET and BET+ on July 14, 2022.  Additional television credits for Skyh include the highest-rated Tyler Perry-produced BET series, “Sistas,” as well as starring opposite Don Cheadle and Regina Hall in Showtime’s critically acclaimed drama series “Black Monday.”  Additionally, Skyh led season one of AMC ALLBLK’s legal drama series “Lace” as attorney Othello Charles in 2021. On the film front, Skyh can next be seen leading TV One’s feature thriller “Stranger Next Door,” directed by Emmy-award winning director Victoria Rowell.  The film tells the story of a former police detective who is both retired and divorced and lives to a life of seclusion as her father’s caretaker when Jesse Holms (Skyh) moves in next door and her seemingly stagnant life is flipped on its head.  “Stranger Next Door” recently made its premiere debut at the American Black Film Festival as part of 12 hand-selected spotlight screenings in June 2022 and is set to premiere on TV One later this year.  It was also recently announced that Skyh will executive produce and star in the romantic drama feature, “A Haitian Wedding.”  The film, which recently wrapped production in Haiti and Miami, centers on the love story of a Haitian-born bride-to-be and her fiancé, the American go-getter Patrick Casey (Skyh).  Skyh continues to hone his talents behind the camera as a producer, and he is currently working on developing of handful of his own projects.Born and raised in Miami, FL, Skyh has always held a strong passion for the arts.  Inspired by Michael Jackson at a young age, Skyh enrolled in dance classes at just five years old, and in just a few years, became fully immersed in the worlds of dancing, singing, and acting.  Professionally trained in tap and ballet, Skyh has danced on tour and in world-famous music videos with legends like Beyoncé as her lead male dancer, Mariah Carey, and Rihanna, to name just a few.  After completing a handful of major tours, Skyh booked the lead role in Michael Jackson’s music video for “A Place with No Name” from his second posthumous album, “Xscape,” which cemented his passion for acting and compelled him to pursue the art full-time, hitting pause on dancing professionally and even taking a side job doing valet parking in Hollywood to afford acting classes and rent while he honed this new passion and craft.  After many classes, a few small roles, and multiple auditions, Skyh booked the role of Jacobi on BET’s “Sistas,” earning widespread praise and acclaim for his performance by critics, fans, and Perry himself.  Skyh holds a strong passion for advocating for the homeless and impoverished, as he himself has had to battle homelessness at various points throughout his lifetime before finding success in the arts, as well as for nourishing and cultivating the dreams of minority children, and showing them that they can follow their passions, no matter where they come from or what they look like.

Prof. Jed Esty - Author of 'The Future of Decline: Anglo-American Culture at Its Limits'

As the US becomes a second-place nation, can it shed the superpower nostalgia that still haunts the UK? The debate over the US's fading hegemony has raged and sputtered for 50 years, glutting the market with prophecies about American decline. Media experts ask how fast we will fall and how much we will lose, but generally ignore the fundamental question: What does decline mean? What is the significance, in experiential and everyday terms, in feelings and fantasies, of living in a country past its prime? Drawing on the example of post-WWII Britain and looking ahead at 2020s America, Jed Esty suggests that becoming a second-place nation is neither disastrous, as alarmists claim, nor avoidable, as optimists insist. Contemporary declinism often masks white nostalgia and perpetuates a conservative longing for Cold War certainty. But the narcissistic lure of "lost greatness" appeals across the political spectrum. As Esty argues, it resonates so widely in mainstream media because Americans have lost access to a language of national purpose beyond global supremacy. It is time to shelve the shopworn fables of endless US dominance, to face the multipolar world of the future, and to tell new American stories. The Future of Decline is a guide to finding them.

Zain Asher - CNN Anchor; Author of Where The Children Take Us

In Where the Children Take Us, Obiajulu’s daughter, Zain E. Asher, tells the story of her mother’s harrowing fight to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. There is tragedy in this tale, but it is not a tragedy. Drawing on tough-love parenting strategies, Obiajulu teaches her sons and daughters to overcome the daily pressures of poverty, crime and prejudice—and much more. With her relentless support, the children exceed all expectations—becoming a CNN anchor, an Oscar-nominated actor—Asher’s older brother Chiwetel Ejiofor—a medical doctor, and a thriving entrepreneur.    The generations-old Nigerian parenting techniques that lead to the family's salvation were born in the village where young Obiajulu and Arinze meet with their country on the brink of war. Together, they emigrate to London in the 1970s to escape the violence, but soon confront a different set of challenges in the West.    When grief threatens to engulf her fractured family after the accident, Obiajulu, suddenly a single mother in a foreign land, refuses to accept defeat. As her children veer down the wrong path, she instills a family book club with Western literary classics, testing their resolve and challenging their deeper understanding. Desperate for inspiration, she plasters newspaper clippings of Black success stories on the walls and hunts for overachieving neighbors to serve as role models, all while running Shakespeare theatre lines with her son and finishing homework into the early morning with Zain. When distractions persist, she literally cuts the TV cord and installs a residential pay phone.   The story of a woman who survived genocide, famine, poverty, and crushing grief to rise from war torn Africa to the streets of South London and eventually the drawing rooms of Buckingham Palace, Where the Children Take Us is an unforgettable portrait of strength, tenacity, love, and perseverance embodied in one towering woman. About Zain Asher:  Zain Ejiofor Asher was born to first-generation Nigerian parents in South London. A graduate of Oxford University and Columbia University, she is currently an anchor for CNN International. She anchors the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom, and can regularly be seen filling in on the network's premier business programs, Quest Means Business, The Express and First Move with Julia Chatterley. Ejiofor Asher’s brothers are Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, successful entrepreneur Obinze, and medical doctor Kandibe. She is passionate about her family, career, and being of service. She lives in NYC with her husband and two sons. She is currently launching her own show on CNN.

Shine Bright is an exploration of how the double burden of oppression of Black women in the United States led to perhaps its greatest cultural contribution to the world: pop music. Woven throughout the gorgeously rendered (and often, refreshingly blunt) reportage that Danyel has become known for, she shares her own story of growing up in Oakland, entrenched in a culture of Black creative ingenuity, and using her passion and confidence to pursue a career in music journalism—a world occupied almost exclusively by men, and in which Black media was seen as a lesser novelty, inferior to its white counterparts.

Deb Britt - Executive Director of the National Black Doll Museum

About the Museum: The National Black Doll Museum has a three-fold mission: to nurture self-esteem, to promote cultural diversity, and to preserve the history of black dolls by educating the public on their significance. In pursuit of our mission, we use Black dolls as both our subject and our artistic medium. We empower our visitors by cultivating their self-knowledge and encouraging their creative skills. We provide a welcoming place where people of all backgrounds can have honest discussions on important topics involving race and cultural differences. And we are proud to be part of a community. We achieve our goals through collaborations with other museums, cultural centers, organizations, and individuals. Cultural education of African American history is exchanged via workshops, seminars, and presentations. We pride ourselves on being a place for all people. Virtual…For A While.Like many other community organizations,  The NBDMHC met with big changes and challenges in 2020. As a result, we had to close our original brick-and-mortar location in Mansfield, MA and relocate temporarily to the internet. As you’ll see, we have taken all the things we’ve always done “on-site” and put them online.  This includes presenting live workshops on doll-making and Black cultural history, offering virtual tours of past exhibits, hosting live events with special guests and of course, providing Black doll fans a chance to visit many of their favorite pieces from our 7000+ doll collection. As we find a new home, our work goes on and we hope you will join us! Please, explore and enjoy The Virtual NBDMHC from the comfort and safety of home! The National Black Doll Museum is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization presented by the Doll E Daze Project. To donate, visit: https://www.launchgood.com/campaign/help_the_national_black_doll_museum_to_reopen#!/

Dr. Bill Schindler - Director of Eastern Shore Food Lab; Author of Eat Like A Human

Every day we hear about a new diet or superfood that will slim us down or add years to our life, and it’s frustrating to have so much competing advice out there. EAT LIKE A HUMAN teaches readers that we don’t have to follow the latest diet trend – be it vegan, carnivore, or keto – in order to eat healthy. Instead, we can look to our ancestors’ diets for guidance on becoming healthier. The book is a unique, refreshing guide to eating in tune with our bodies and is perfect for anyone who’s interested in eating simpler and more sustainably. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific food group, and the book features 75+ delicious recipes. An ideal read for fans of Rene Redzepi or Fergus Henderson, or for anyone interested in the sustainable food movement and “snout to tail” eating.

Sharon Chuter - CEO, Founder & Creative Director of the Black-Owned Beauty Brand, UOMA Beauty

Bringing bold new ideas to an industry stuck in its ways, Chuter is revolutionizing the beauty world as the founder of two wildly successful viral initiatives Pull Up For Change and Make it Black, which spotlight the need for increased representation in corporate America and supports Black founders through small business impact funds. In the wake of Black Lives Matter protests, #PullUpForChange asked companies to share the number of Black employees on their payrolls in an act of transparency and unity. Since the challenge was released brands such as Kylie Cosmetics, ULTA, L'Oreal and Sephora have released demographic data on their employees and executives; the challenge has also ventured outside of the beauty industry, publishing lists from Facebook Google, and Netflix, to name a few. Born in Nigeria, the 32-year-old trailblazer became frustrated that none of the major beauty brands were sold in her country. After moving to Australia and working her way up through some of the biggest names in beauty, Sharon realized that none of them were creating products that catered to a diverse audience. This was her opportunity to stand up and fight for inclusion. And so began her journey to create UOMA Beauty. Drawing inspiration from her Afro heritage and infusing it with a fierce modernity, Sharon was able to create a truly fresh aesthetic, while also advocating for self-love and authentic self-expression. What emerged was a makeup range that is radical, uncompromising, and filled with both meaning and emotion.   About the Brand: UOMA Beauty is the most inclusive black-owned beauty brand. At UOMA we are an empowered tribe. Our race is human, our people are free, our language is color. All are welcome to our beautiful tribe. The makeup range is rebellious, innovative, and created for all—because beauty should come in every color. UOMA Beauty retails between $18 and $44 and is available for purchase at UOMABEAUTY.COM and in mega-retailers Ulta Beauty and Nordstrom nationwide. To Shop UOMA Beauty: https://uomabeauty.com/

Misty Copeland - Author of "BLACK BALLERINAS: My Journey to Our Legacy"

From New York Times bestselling and award-winning author and American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland comes her most cherished book to date that pays tribute Black ballerinas, both past and present, who have influenced her on and off the stage.  Misty Copeland was 16 years old, just one year shy of joining American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) Studio Company, when she saw a Black ballerina, Lauren Anderson, on a magazine cover for the first time. It was that very moment which inspired and empowered Misty with the knowledge that she was part of a grand legacy. Fueled by a history of Black women in ballet that deserved to be widely told and celebrated. Misty was further motivated to pursue and achieve her ballet goals.  In the years since, Misty has been very intentional about her own journey to learning more about the many trailblazing, courageous women who made her success – and her very presence on prestigious stages around the world - possible. On those days when Misty confronted her own challenges as a Black woman in ballet, she recalled how the women who came before her pushed back against oppression and racism with their talent, bravery, and tenacity, establishing their own unique legacies as ballerinas. Contributing to the preservation of the history of Black women in ballet has become one of Misty’s chosen ambitions. That’s why BLACK BALLERINAS is one of the most important books that Misty feels that she will ever publish. Beginning with an intimate introduction from Misty about the impact these women have had on dance and on her career, BLACK BALLERINAS delves into their lives and distinguished journeys, detailing how they each fundamentally changed the landscape of American ballet from the early 20th century to today.

Kathleen Belew - Author of A Field Guide to White Supremacy

Kathleen Belew is a historian of the present and leading expert on the white power movement, vigilante violence, and political extremism. Her first book, Bring the War Home, has been discussed on Fresh Air, Newshour, Frontline, and in the New York Times. The book brings together nineteen essays from writers and researchers like Adam Goodman, Judith Butler, Rebecca Solnit, Keeyanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Jamelle Bouie and others to excavate the history and current manifestations of white supremacy in the US. This book is meant as a tool for journalists, activists, and citizens who want to understand and oppose the 400-year history of white supremacy, which started with slavery and has led to Jim Crow, thousands of hate crimes, police violence, January 6th and countless other horrors. If we don’t fully understand the contours of white supremacy, we have no chance of stopping it.

Tim Wise - Anti-Racism Activist; Author

In this collection of essays, renowned social-justice advocate Tim Wise confronts racism in contemporary America. Seen through the lens of major flashpoints during the Obama and Trump years, Dispatches from the RaceWar faces the consequences of white supremacy in all its forms. This includes a discussion of the bigoted undertones of the Tea Party’s backlash, the killing of Trayvon Martin, current day anti-immigrant hysteria, the rise of openly avowed white nationalism, the violent policing of African Americans, and more. Wise devotes a substantial portion of the book to explore the racial ramifications of COVID-19, and the widespread protests which followed the police murder of George Floyd. Concise, accessible chapters, most written in first-person, offer an excellent source for those engaged in the anti-racism struggle. Tim Wise’s proactive approach asks white allies to contend with—and take responsibility for—their own role in perpetuating racism against Blacks and people of color. Dispatches from the Race War reminds us that the story of our country is the history of racial conflict, and that our future may depend on how—or if—we can resolve it. “To accept racism is quintessentially American,” writes Wise, “to rebel against it is human. Be human.”

Andrew Yang - Former Presidential Candidate; Author of Forward

Iin Forward, Yang reveals that UBI and the threat of job automation are only the beginning, diagnosing how a series of cascading problems within our antiquated systems keeps us stuck in the past—imperiling our democracy at every level. With America’s stagnant institutions failing to keep pace with technological change, we grow more polarized as tech platforms supplant our will while feasting on our data. Yang introduces us to the various “priests of the decline” of America, including politicians whose incentives have become divorced from the people they supposedly serve. The machinery of American democracy is failing, Yang argues, and we need bold new ideas to rewire it for twenty-first-century problems. Inspired by his experience running for office and as an entrepreneur, and by ideas drawn from leading thinkers, Yang offers a series of solutions, including data rights, ranked-choice voting, and fact-based governance empowered by modern technology, writing that “there is no cavalry”—it’s up to us. This is a powerful and urgent warning that we must step back from the brink and plot a new way forward for our democracy.
