The host of radio shows, loved across Canada since the 1990s, Jeff Woods started up this artist interview & performance podcast from his home studio in 2016. People have called him “the voice of classic rock”, and with good reason, since Woods created and hosted the Legends of Classic Rock radio series, and subsequently the Records & Rockstars Radio Show, but at his heart is sitting down for conversations with today’s musicians, to talk about the songs and about lives spent immersed in music. Beyond radio and the podcast, Woods is a voice over artist, event emcee, as well as former record store owner and record company marketing rep. He added author to his resume in 2016 with the release of his autobiography Radio, Records & Rockstars, featuring more than 2 dozen conversations with artists, the original audio of which is featured in the audio book version, available on Audible and Apple, via jeffwoodsradio.com To Support the completion of Jeff's Studio - go here. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-build-wild-woods-blue-performance-studio
240: Led Zeppelin Mando-Music
There's something about the sound of the instrument, smallish in size, that adds something special to select rock songs. It's Italian. It has strings. It's part of the lute family of stringed instruments with long necks and and rounded bodies. Most often played with a pick, it typically has four courses or sets of 2 strings, tuned in unison and making it an 8 string instrument, and when you put two strings close together like this, you get more volume, just like with a 12 string guitar has that shimmer of strings vibrating against one another. Mandolin after the Italian mandolino, and it's in the spotlight this time in nothing but the songs of Led Zeppelin.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

223: My Special Guests: Angus Young of AC/DC
I remember this day vividly. November 1997, when I was still recording artist interviews to quarter inch tape, and using a razor blade to move stuff around and add in the perfect songs, to get the special ready for radio. In walked Angus Young. He wasn't alone. In fact, he was dwarfed by the presence of two people, sitting on either side of him, across the recording console. Their presence seemed to fade from my view as Angus and I got into his memories of the great Bon Scott, to whom AC/DC was paying tribute with the then forthcoming box set Bonfire, titled, in a way, by the former front man himself. Angus tells that story, and so many more about his and Bon's bond, and their rise together on the long way to the top. Somehow, I had never been to Las Vegas. Then along came the opportunity to talk to Carlos Santana, September 3, 2010,when I got to the Hard Rock Hotel with guitar in hand—a black Gibson SG, knowing that the SG was the model of guitar Carlos had long ago played, and it’s truly one of the classic models (also associated with Angus Young of AC/DC and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath). Carlos happily autographed it for use in an auction event I would later stage to benefit music therapy services in Canada. I thanked Carlos for coming and congratulated him on the imminent release of Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, featuring guest performances by everyone from Joe Cocker to Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland and more. With fans like David Bowie and Bob Dylan and Robert Plant, and close friends that included Chris Cornell, Jeff Buckley was an artists revered the world over for his unique talent. In the 1990’s Jeff got signed to Columbia Records, and made an album called GRACE, that can only be called essential. And then suddenly without warning in May 1997 Jeff Buckley was gone. At the time of his death, he had been working on a batch of new songs that, with a little help from his friends and Jeff’s mother, saw the light of day about a year after his passing. That’s when I had the good fortune to speak to Mary Guibert, about her son and his music and the final day of his life. 203: Killer Closing Cuts
Sequencing as it's known, was and still is for many, and important part of the record making process. The mood and the tempo of the different songs, has an affect on the listener. So sequencing becomes an opportunity to enhance the experience. Sequencing defines the relationship between each song. An obvious way to begin is to lead with your best foot. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. And then you can build from there. And build anticipation. Or tension. And the album becomes a journey. Which to many is one of the things that about collecting and enjoying albums that really matters. You can group together songs that will sustain a vibe. You can dramatically change the vibe, again, by changing the mood or the tempo. And every album be it a single or a double or for that matter a triple, has a final cut. Here comes some killer closers now. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Isn't it ironic, that an entire genre of music, was born out of a band 80% comprised of Canadians, as four men named Danko, Hudson, Manuel, and Robertson, and their Arkansas born drummer Levon Helm, unwittingly gave rise to so-called “Americana”.And they, like our guest this time, had in their songs, themes like change, hope, heartbreak, and belonging. She's also fan of Townes Van Zant. Hearing him, she was hooked. They blew away the room at the Horseshoe in Toronto where Jeff was compelled to invite them here, to tell their story and perform live, including something never before shared on radio or a podcast, plus we'll go directly to the “Anyways” EP, recorded mostly on vintage gear. Sounds perfect next to Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. With Brandon Gregory – lead vocals & gtr, Dylan Wykes – lead gtr & vocals, Russ Shipman – bass & vocals, and Jeff Cox – drums & vocals. 2 songs from the studio and 2 songs performed live at Jeff Woods' Wild Woods Blue Studio.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

200: Rockstars on the Wagon
From time to time, many among us give thought to our relationship to booze. For some, drinking alcohol poses no drama. For others, it's a problem. Some deal. Some don't. Some will. Others won't. We've lost a lot of musicians to the bottle, and we've been fortunate to see some kick the habit, and stick around a little longer. Here comes a half hour of stories and music from rockstars on the wagon, with related conversation around sobriety that Jeff has had with Ronnie Wood, and Jeff Beck, plus an insightful reflection from Elliot Mintz, on his friend John Lennon, and the story of the Hollywood Vampires. Now the second in a 2-parter full of songs recalling years, and featuring a bit of conversation about the the tunes in question, from Jeff's sit-downs with Bob Seger, and Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan. Seger recalls recording his first massive hit in Toronto, and Becker and Fagen review some of their own songs, which is hilarious too. 192: Introducing Delyn Grey
These songs! And her voice! And these live performances, as passion abounds. Our friend Bif Naked says of our guest this time, “She's is the first artist about whom I felt so strongly. Her talent, words, and music move me like a hurricane”. Jeff's special guest this time is Toronto's Delyn Grey who brings out her left handed guitar and nails two performances of original songs, alongside two more of Delyn's songs from the studio, amid conversation about her career so far which is promising and exciting, with an October 2023 5 song EP release and live shows scheduled. If there was a rack of records or CD's that if you like this one, you might like that one, artists like PJ Harvey, Trent Reznor, Evanescence, might appear, next to her. And she's moved audiences at The Drake, and Revival and The Horseshoe, and now she's here at Wild Woods Blue to sing and play and share words and music and her story, welcome singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist/band leader: Delyn Grey.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

191: Dani Strong Special
This is a treat, long time coming, or perhaps as I like to think, it's precisely the right time, to finally meet and shine much deserved light upon multi-award-winning artist and songwriter Dani Strong, who brings her guitar and her smile and her stories to Wild Woods Blue Studio. Her songs have landed in television and movies, and on record, as her 3rd full length releases fall 2023, from which she has put into the world, singles like “Slow Down”, and “Loved” and the one that most caught my ear as something very special, the song “Out of the Darkness” that comes with a harrowing true life story. She'll play two of those on her Martin guitar and her voice and playing are PERFECT. Plus we'll throw to five of Dani's exceptional songs from the studio, plus hear about the other facets of her career like teaching, and managing other artists, and for anyone thinking of creating and releasing music, Dani's Do's and Don'ts. It's a 79 minute program, about an album unique in sound, and vision – that of Hennessy who invited me to contribute spoken word bits, intros and interludes, which may remind some of the ones legendary Los Angeles radio DJ Jim Ladd, contributed to Roger Water Radio K.A.O.S. album in the eighties.Mobius Radio the album is now available on Bandcamp and wherever you stream your music.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

189: Bob Wegner and the Definitive Book on Max Webster
Jeff's special guest is as musical as it gets. And now a music author to boot. He learned to play, he learned to teach, and he landed the role as a guitarist in the “We Will Rock You” musical in Toronto, after winning the slot upon a successful audition with Brian May and Roger Taylor of QUEEN. Then he did some performances with Classic Albums Live, faithfully delivering the guitar parts of Jimmy Page for Zeppelin IV, and Alex Lifeson's guitar for the RUSH album 2112. He'd recreate records by other bands including Genesis, Beatles, YES, and Pink Floyd. Oh, and we talk KISS Cruise, because he's done that too. So, Bob Wegner knows how to play. He also knows how to compose. And now he's added author to his resume in coming out with Max Webster "High Class", the DEFINITIVE book about Max Webster, endorsed by Kim Mitchell and the other members of the Max machine, as it were. I hand Bob a guitar and he hands you a few performances including some deep tracks by Genesis and Paul McCartney, plus a precious gem by Max Webster. And we talk Beatles and Stones, and a reaction to Steve Lukather's recent rant about what the hell has become of (some) modern music and the way it's made. Here comes the intelligent, talented and perfectly talkative Bob Wegner in an episode rooted in Max Webster, with branches all over the place, because these two are geeking out with Kim Mitchell's band, and beyond the moon. 187: The Kings Always Off the Deep End Special
“Hey little Donna, still wanna? You said to ring you up when I was in Toronna”. Or perhaps: “Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view!”That's right, the Kings are here, with new music and the “Always Off The Deep End” Special, featuring the single of the same name and more of their latest songs that sound as great as their timeless hit “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide”, which we'll revisit because how do you deny the tune that all those years ago got them signed to a world-wide deal back when world famous producer Bob (Pink Floyd The Wall, KISS, Peter Gabriel) Ezrin dropped by to visit and checked the band out and liked what he heard. He agreed to mix the tracks The Kings had recorded but soon discovered that the whole thing needed to be re-done. He approached ElektraRecords in Los Angeles with The Kings’ tapes and the unknown band was signed. The project was released as “The Kings Are Here”. ‘Switchin’ To Glide’, was put out and did get noticed but the tune was really two songs in one and the band insisted they be released together. So when the segue ‘This Beat Goes On/Switchin’ To Glide’ was released radio really picked up on it. Even at over five minutes in length, it caught on all over the USA and Canada with huge airplay in every major market and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for six months. 40 plus years later, it sounds as good as it did the first time. So, Jeff and David Diamond and Mr. Zero dig in to all that and the newest Kings music too, created with collaborators including Ezrin, GGGarth Richardson, Harry Hess, and other world class producers and mixers. Lots of stories and music to go with. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

His growth as a recording artist, engineer and producer has been immense. This record is a profound work. 177: Mando Music
There's something about the sound of the instrument, smallish in size, that adds something special to select rock songs. It's Italian. It has strings. It's part of the lute family and has a long neck and and rounded body. Most often played with a pick, it typically has four courses or sets of 2 strings, tuned in unison and making it an 8 string instrument, and when you put two strings close together like this, you get more volume because of the strings vibrating against one another. The mandolin would be put to use in European classic music, and in American folk and bluegrass music. And then thanks to Led Zeppelin, in rock music too. Not just them, but a raft of bands in the seventies, eighties and nineties, each of which is revealed in this episode of so-called mando-music. Remember “World Album Premiere” radio specials? This is just like that, but only available as a podcast as Jeff welcomes the return of the uniquely voiced sweetheart of an artist who debuted on Records & Rockstars in Episode 56 (Oct 2020). Mattie Leon brings his acoustic guitar, and an elpees worth of tunes produced by Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, The Tragically Hip), and Mattie and Jeff dig into the songs with stories behind them, featuring four cuts directly off the album, and Mattie plays two more key cuts live at Jeff's Wild Woods Blue Studio. Hailing from Hamilton, Mattie is a craftsman on guitar and piano, with sensibilities informed by the songwriting of the sixties and seventies. His voice, whether soaring or soulful, is his own. At his side is Mike Leon, Mattie's drummer and longtime collaborator. Together, they've become a captivating example of the unique thing that happens when siblings share the studio or stage.Mattie, Mike and longtime bassist, and multi-instrumentalist Nelson Sobral (Episode 72 March 2021) did things the old fashioned way; recording everything together in the same room. And then the 1950s gave way to the British invasion, and then the seventies and eighties, and then the broad term Classic Rock, would slowly let in another decade. 168: The Evolution of Classic Rock Part 1
Truth be told, radio helped, through its too-tight playlists, all but ruin the format, turned genre, "Classic Rock". And that's where the former iteration of Records & Rockstars came in. It was 2001 we created "The Legends of Classic Rock", designed to go deeper musically, and tell the stories behind the music. 22 years later, the series continues, with records we came to love and the stories around the artists who made 'em. And so comes the first in this four-part series, condensing decade by decade, how rock would evolve, beginning in Part 1 with the birth of the baby born of the blues, called Rock 'N' Roll. War, what is it good for? The Saxophone apparently. Beyond the triumphant marches of the militaristic minded, the saxophone became well known in big band music, blues and jazz and soul and rhythm and blues which gave way to good ol' rock and roll music. IN fact before the guitar took over, it was the sax that got all the solos. Here's a uniquely voiced songwriter from Toronto who has been working with producer Gavin Brown on his latest songs – Mattie Leon stops in to sing and play and talk, as we get into the want for playing publicly again, the courage of young people facing distance and daunting odds, and he talks about his favourite Beatle with reasons why. This is the first podcast from the new Wild Woods Blue Performance Studio. Mattie Leon is a singer/songwriter hailing from the western reaches of Toronto. A craftsman with a guitar, Mattie refuses to leave the past behind. His sensibilities are informed by the songwriting of the sixties and seventies. His voice, whether soaring or soulful, is his own. The result is a fresh take on a classic form; familiar but unmistakably new. Mattie is no stranger to the road. He's brought his music to stages across Canada, from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts. At his side is Mike Leon, Mattie's drummer and longtime collaborator. Together, they've become a captivating example of the unique thing that happens when siblings perform together. Just ten years old when he picked up the guitar, and fifteen when he got a deal with Warner Music Canada, that led to the 7 song EP “Augusta”, which led to his opening shows everywhere for “Walk off The Earth”. Scott Helman reveals the album behind this quote: “I want to spend the rest of my life trying to make something half as good as this.” https://www.audible.ca/pd/Radio-Records-Rockstars-Audiobook/B07JGF7PS7 Support the Show: https://www.jeffwoodsradio.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

4: Urvah Khan
Kickass lover of Black Sabbath, Urvah is a fighter for human decency, especially for young women who have been relegated to the stereotypes of her culture. The Pakistan-born, Dubai-raised, Canadian resident took what she called the scraps of punk and rock and created her own brand of music, inspiring about a million supporters and detractors along the way – just for having the audacity to be herself. Urvah joins me to talk about embarking on the craziest journey of her life, so far, and we spin a new song. www.UrvahKhan.com https://www.audible.ca/pd/Radio-Records-Rockstars-Audiobook/B07JGF7PS7 Support the Show: https://www.jeffwoodsradio.com/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
