#413 - Fast but still eat, to lose weight and live longer - Nutritional Physiologist Inge Lindseth

Fasting as we know is doing without food for a period of time. When we fast we stress the body, and the body responds to this fasting by adapting so its prepared for the next time there is a shortage of food. This is how our ancestors lived, given they could go many hours even days without food. And scientists like Prof Valter Longo who I've spoken to before, believe that we can tap into the body's ability to adapt to stresses like a lack of food and reap many biological benefits, from weightloss, to enhanced metabolic function and even to living a longer life. To explore this subject further I speak with nutritional physiologist Inge Lindseth about how Valter Longo and others have developed a fasting mimicking diet, which involves cyclical fasting without a complete abstinence of food, yet still allowing for the benefits of fasting to occur. What foods can we eat oon this fasting mimicking diet and how often, plus for how long does the fasting last. We ask what role does our gut bacteria play in respect of our weight, our metabolic health and how is its diversity is affected by our diet. We also ask whether we should consume probiotics and if so in what form, supplements or simply food? Fasting is a form of bodily stress that if used correctly scientists believe can reap many benefits, however, its prudent to say that adoption of a dietary regime that involves fasting absolutely must be done under the supervision of a professional. https://www.mymicrobiome.info/en/welcome Music used is Purple planet Music crediit goes to them Order Happy Habits for Mind and Body Audiobook: https://amzn.to/3KeQmGr Order Kindle copy of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://amzn.to/4c9T38f Order US paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://amzn.to/4bxczeT Order UK paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/jtfea5 Listen to all previous podcast episodes of the Happy Habit Podcast via these podcast platforms : Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/happy-habit-podcast Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Habit-Podcast/dp/B08K5887J8 Amazon music : https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/670836c2-ea4c-4a23-a67d-a54dd804ef61/happy-habit-podcast Spotify https://https://open.spotify.com/show/2VKIhQK6mYTzLCO8haUoRd Google Podcasts : https://t.ly/hTU8q ----- Follow the Happy Habit Podcast at: Website: https://happyhabitpodcast.wordpress.com/Facebook: Twitter: https://twitter.com/mathieunorry Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/happyhabitpodcast/ Newsletter:

# 412 - Is this the holy grail of ageing ? -Prof Joseph Baur

We all want to live as long as is possible, and for many years scientists have been exploring the subject of longevity to unlock its secrets with varying degrees of success, and so to explore ageing and metabolism I'm joined physiologist Prof Joseph Baur. We ask exactly what causes ageing and why there is no consensus on this question. We hear about calorie restriction and how it has been shown to increase the life of animals by up to 40%. Dr Baur busts the myth of antioxidants' ability to stave off ageing. Expect to hear about the molecule NAD, how it declines as we get older which seems to have an influence on the ageing process and we discover NAD's relationship with an enzyme called CD34. Dr Baur also tells us of the groundbreaking work he has done to discover an important NAD transporter that carries NAD from the cell cytoplasm into the mitochondria. We also ask how do we boost NAD levels and what significance does NMN have? Plus we hear about the market for anti-ageing NAD supplementation and why one needs to take anti-ageing assertions made by certain companies with a pinch of salt given the lack of clinical trials. # 409 Exactly how magic are magic mushrooms for mental health ? - Dr Friedericke Holze

Its well known that there is currently a mental health crisis across the world, but the field of psychiatry has evolved little in recent decades and existing drugs used to treat patients have response rates ranging from at best 50 to 70 % depending on the drug. In addition those taking SSRIs for example for their depression are locked in to their prescriptions for life. So the appetite exists for alternative approaches. Psycheledic drugs and associated research are now seeing renewed interest, no longer are they solely associated with their recreational use during the hippy era of the 60s but increasingly more and more studies are pointing to their efficacy when it comes to dealing with mental health problems like anxiety and depression. With that in mind I spoke with research scientist Dr Freiederike Holze who explained what psychedelics are and what we understand about how they work in the brain. We hear about the remarkable ability of LSD to treat anxiety with long standing results after only a couple of doses. Dr Holze compares LSD with Psilocybin, and details the benefits of both while also outlining the potential negative effects. Also expect to learn about how MDMA studies have shown promising results for dealing with PTSD symptoms. It goes without saying that while psychedlics have been used by humankind for eons, and many people will report a positive experience when they used them for their own therapeutic purposes, scientists must prove their efficacy in a replicable way and in a controlled environment, as frustrating as many may find this, its the only way forward if psychedelics are to become a mainstream approach to treating conditions like depression which blights so many. This discussion is purely for educational purposes. # 408 - Acquiring an unbeatable mindset - Navy Seal Commander Mark Divine

Unbeatable Mind book : https://amzn.to/3UOWVp3 To be a soldier requires a particular kind of mindset, discipline and mental toughness. And to be a member of the special forces requires serious mastery of the mind. In an effort to tap into this mindset I speak with Navy Seal Commander Mark Divine who by his own admission was the archetypal overachiever physically, but it wasnt until he discovered karate and zen meditation that he really tapped into what he was capable of physically and mentally. We hear about his chaotic family background growing up and how it undermined his confidence which was in contrast with his physical prowess and success in sport up to that point. Commander Divine talks about how transformative meditation was in how he saw himself and life's challenges, and how it gave him the vital strengths to change career, enter the military and lead a team of 6 navy recruits through the tortuous 9 months of navy seal training which included the infamous hell week. Divine was 1 of only 19 recruits out of a total of 185 who passed navy seal training, and would go on to spend 20 years in the navy seals. We explore the 4 key skills that are crucial to Commander Divine's philosophy, including vizualisation and positive self talk. While the terms 'navy seals', 'special forces', and the 'SAS' will conjure up various perconceived notions you have of that world, I want you to park them, because this conversation focuses on mastering your mind, overcoming that inner negative dialogue which we all engage in to our detriment. Lets be honest if someone who faced the brutal training and life threatening situations which Commander Divine had to, then I know we can absolutely glean some really great advice to help us deal with our everyday lives. www.sealfit.com Order Happy Habits for Mind and Body Audiobook: https://rb.gy/h5jjjg Order Kindle copy of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/jiojcc Order US paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/sirste Order UK paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/jtfea5 Listen to all previous podcast episodes of the Happy Habit Podcast via these podcast platforms : Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/happy-habit-podcast Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Habit-Podcast/dp/B08K5887J8 Amazon music : https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/670836c2-ea4c-4a23-a67d-a54dd804ef61/happy-habit-podcast Spotify https://https://open.spotify.com/show/2VKIhQK6mYTzLCO8haUoRd Google Podcasts : https://t.ly/hTU8q ----- Follow the Happy Habit Podcast at: Website: https://happyhabitpodcast.wordpress.com/Facebook: Twitter: https://twitter.com/mathieunorry Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/happyhabitpodcast/ Newsletter:

# 407 - Parkinsons and other forms of dementa are preventable - Dr Ray Dorsey

Neurologist Dr Ray Dorsey author of Ending parkinsons disease returns to the podcast. Clearly theres a huge interest in all forms of dementia, in Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease and Lewy body dementia which is the disease to which Robin Williams sadly succumbed only a few years ago. So in this episode we talk about Parkinsons disease, how it was discovered, its symptoms but crucially why Dr Dorsey and other experts believe it is preventable. We hear of the environmental factors that Dr Dorsey believes are causing Parkinsons and other forms of dementia, including dry cleaning chemicals, emissions from cars and toxins contaminating our food. We learn that only in a very small number of cases of Parkinsons are genetics implicated, which further points to factors outside the body that are driving this and other forms of cognitive decline. It is also Dr Dorsey's belief that contamination by toxins is what is driving the huge spike in cases of autism in recent years. In this episode we explore what this chemical is and discuss how it negatively affects not only the health of animals in the laboratory but also livestock. We hear of the environmental implications of its use but chillingly we also hear about how it affects human health, our reproductive and our endochrine systems. # 400 - The big FAT lie - Nina Teicholz science journalist

This podcast is about sharing information, quality information about how to become better versions of ourselves, physically and mentally. For information about our physical health we have historicallyrelied on scientists, nutritionists, medics, experts and government guidelines. But what happens when that information is tainted, this is what we explore today as I talk with investugative science journalist and author of The Big Fat Surprise, Nina Teicholz. Nina is a force of nature who has almost singlehandedly challenged the narrative on fat in our diets and that saturated fat causes heart disease. In this episode we discover where the commonly accepted and yet disproven idea that saturated fat is bad for us, came from. We hear about a physiologist called Ancel Keys and the role his flawed science, his biases and his sheer force of personality played in influencing the American Heart Association and its dietary guidelines and how that influence continues to this day, 70 years on. We hear why researchers were afraid to talk with Nina when she was writing her book. Expect to learn Nina's thoughts on vegetable oils inclusion in modern diets in recent decades and how their increased consumption has led to worsening health. We talk about the enormous control large mutinational food companies have over western diets at the expense of our health. We learn why the pharmaceutical industry thrives off drugs that people take indefinitely, such as the new weightloss drug Ozempic which Oprah recently announced that shes taking , indeed I ask Nina what her thoughts are on Oprah's relationship with Ozempic given her decades long status as a weightloss icon. My conversation with Nina Teichloz is a real eye opener, with more than few jaw dropping admissions, I hope you enjoy it as amuch as I did. # 397 - Heal chronic pain without meds - Dr Howard Schubiner

Chronic pain is an enormous problem across the entire population of the world, and anyone who has experienced pain beyond a period of several days will speak of its debilitating effects on their life. Existing pain management models are exactly that, management models, and this can involve years of prescription pain medications which can bring their own issues and negative health effects. Today I speak with a pain specialist and author of Unlearn your pain, Dr Howard Schubiner who has developed a pain model to help treat patients with chronic pain, not by managing the pain but in many cases by eliminating it entirely. In this episode we define what pain is and learn that pain is in fact processed in the brain. We hear that in many many cases pain exists in the absence of physical injury or structural anomaly. Discover that with chronic headaches for example, in most cases theres nothing physically wrong with the sufferer. We learn of the relationship between the growing prevalance of back pain and the rise in anxiety and depression. Expect to learn of the link between poor self image and chronic pain. We discuss the connection between childhood trauma and illness in later life including the presence of chronic pain. We also hear about the research studies Dr Schubiner and colleagues have been carrying out which shows that chronic pain can be eliminated without medication. Dr Schubiner is a pioneer in what can only be described as an extremely exciting and potentially transformative area of medicine and healing, I hope you enjoy this conversation. # 369 - Tips to stop yourself being influenced against your will - Dr Alice Pailhes

Dr Alice Pailhès, Ph.D. is an Associate Lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Dr Pailhes has a partticular fascination in magic and the psychology behind magic tricks. I'm talking about how magicians use psychology to manipulate, influence, force, redirect, misdirect and distract us in order to bamboozle us with their magic skills. Dr Pailhes' research focuses on the use of magic tricks to study the illusory sense of agency or control. She specialises in studying the subtle factors that influence our decisions without our awareness. In this episode we learn that magic is a conflict between our rational mind, our beliefs and our emotions. We see a trick performed, and rationally it doesnt make sense but there it is before our eyes and so we are left stunned, scratching our heads searching for answers. We also learn that the brain often seeks out the simplest most energy efficient option which causes us to adhere to habits or patterns of behaviour, essentially the brain operates on autopilot which is when we are most vulnerable to being controlled or influenced. We hear about different techniques that magicians use to influence or force a person to do or believe something in order that they fall for the magic trick. Expect to learn about restriction and compliance and how they feature in a magicians act. We hear that its exceptionally easily to influence people even when the person being influenced knows they are being influenced or controlled. The good news is we can take the psychological lessons learned in the arena of magic and apply them in the real world so that we can reduce our liklihood of being influenced. This is an interesting discussion about how our minds work and how we are so very easily influenced by external forces aswell as internal forces and biases, while Dr Pailhes uses the subject of magic to illustrate how the mind operates in terms of it being easily influenced, her observations on psychology apply to everyday life. Indeed we are constantly being influenced by advertising, media and by friends and family. The key is to be aware of when we are being influenced so that we can own gatekeeper to that influence. https://www.dralicepailhes.com/

# 366 - From wheelchair to cycling 18 miles - Dr Terry Wahls

Dr Terry Wahls is an author and a clinical Professor of medicine at the University of Iowa, in addition to being proof positive that food can be your medicine. She was diagnosed with MS and spent 4 years relying on a wheelchair for her mobility, so debilitating were her symptoms. She was faced with making one of 2 choices, to either give up on life or continue going. Thankfully she chose the latter and she dived into researching how nutrition could positively impact her condition and went on to develop her Wahls protocol, a diet based protocol that would see her go from being wheelchair bound to being able to ride her bike to work again. Twenty years after her MS diagnosis, she continues in her mission to help others with her diet and lifestyle philosophy. We learn about what motivated Dr Wahls in the darkest moments when her condition held little hope. We hear about what steps she took in relation to her nutrition when she made the decision not to fall victim to the medically accepted limitations of her diagnosis. Dr Wahls, tells us about the main driver of MS, the mitochondria or the power house of our cells, and how this knowledge helped her establish a dietary protocol that helped her rediscover her hitherto waning energy levels. We hear about how diet can lessen the negative effects of systemic inflammation especially as far as autoimmune diseases are concerned. We discover that the dramatic improvement in Dr Wahls condition is not an anomaly, but as a study she has carried out in other MS patients shows, changes in diet and nutrition intake can improve the health of other chronic disease sufferers too. And expect to learn what foods Dr Wahls suggests we eat and what foods we should consider elminating from our diets. To say that Dr Wahls condition as an MS patient has improved over the last 2 decades since she was initially diagnosed, is an understatement. In times past her cases would have been labelled miraculous. The truth very much grounded in science and reality, Dr Wahls rejected the traditional route of submitting completely to pharmaceutical drugs instead choosing to allow her food provide the nutrients she needed to restore her health. Its important to state, Dr Wahls still has MS but her experimentation with her nutrition allowed her to initially drastically reverse her decline, and return to practise medicine but also to drastically slow down the progress of this debilitating disease. Her determination and her story are extraordinary.
