Bethany’s empathetic, growth-oriented approach empowers her clients to break free from harmful patterns and embrace a more fulfilling, balanced life. In this episode, we dive deep into the fascinating world of the Enneagram and its role in personal growth and recovery from food addiction. Bethany Mazereeuw, MSW provides an insightful introduction to the Enneagram, explaining how this system of nine personality types helps individuals understand the "why" behind their behaviors. We explore how the Enneagram offers a unique pathway for self-awareness and healing, making it a valuable tool in recovery. Key Takeaways: What is the Enneagram?: An arrangement of nine different personality types represented in a circular diagram. Each type reflects a different way of seeing the world and is shaped by experiences and upbringing. Triads of Intelligence: The Enneagram divides the nine types into three centers of intelligence—Heart (Feeling), Head (Thinking), and Body (Doing)—that shape how individuals process information and respond to the world around them. Difference from Other Personality Tests: Unlike assessments like Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram digs into the underlying motivations driving behavior and provides a roadmap for personal growth and self-awareness. Application in Recovery: Understanding your Enneagram type can provide insight into the deeper motivations behind addictive behaviors and offer specific growth paths to break free from ingrained patterns. Highlights: The Enneagram doesn’t just stop at identifying personality; it helps us understand the work needed to transcend our automatic behaviors and move toward greater emotional and spiritual health. Discussion on how Enneagram types align with different centers of intelligence—Feeling (Heart), Thinking (Mind), and Doing (Body)—and how these centers relate to how we interact with the world and approach recovery. Insights into how each Enneagram type responds to recovery strategies, like diet programs or emotional triggers, and how tailoring approaches can improve recovery outcomes. Practical Tips: Learn your Enneagram type by reflecting on your core motivations rather than just outward behaviors. Once you know your type, use it to become more aware of how you interact with the world and manage your recovery. Engage in "non-judgmental self-observation" to notice when you're acting from ego patterns and consciously choose healthier behaviors. Episode 132: Ally Houston

Ally Houston is a former physicist who fixed his brain with food. After suffering from ADHD, seasonal depression, chronic anxiety, and a host of other metabolic problems, a paleo ketogenic diet and lifestyle change resulted in a quantum leap in his health. The effect was so profound that he switched career. He is now a metabolic mental health coach trained by PreKure and Dr. Georgia Ede. Molly Painschab and Clarissa Kennedy (and I) asked Ally Houston about how changing his diet changed his life and career. Ally shared his story of how he was quite unwell from a young age and how his physics professor suggested he try a low carb diet. After trying it, Ally experienced a huge transformation in his mental health, gut health, and weight control. This led him to change his career to metabolic mental health coaching, helping people with food and mood, nutritional psychiatry, and depression and anxiety. Ally believes that there is a cultural component to why men are less likely to self-identify as food addicts, and that it is hard for them to admit they have a problem. He believes that if food addiction is recognized in the DSM, it will allow people to embrace it more and be more open about it. He also believes that meeting people where they are is important, and that understanding the mechanism of addiction can help people to make changes. Ally shares his approach to avoiding giving unsolicited advice and talks about his experiments with different diets. He also discusses his podcast, Youtube channel, and book, which focus on mental health and nutrition science. Ally discussed the importance of finding an individualized diet that works for each person, emphasizing the need to find foods that both taste good and are beneficial for one's health. He also discussed the importance of having hope and believing that things can get better.   In this episode: Ally Houston's Journey from Physics to Metabolic Mental Health Coaching: * Using food to treat mental health concerns Exploring the Benefits of Intuition and Scientific Reasoning in Coaching A Discussion on Mental Health and the Benefits of Ketogenic Diets: * Mental Health Discussion of the Challenges of Male Food Addiction Ally Houston's Approach to Avoiding Unsolicited Advice Experiments in Nutrition and Dieting: * The role of large corporations in the food chain Ally Houston Discusses his Podcast, Youtube Channel, and Book Exploring the Process of Addressing Food Addiction Ally Houston shares advice on how to improve mental health through diet and lifestyle.: * Individualized nutrition   Follow Ally: Website: https://metpsy.com/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ally-houston-transforms-podcast-by-paleo-canteen/id1468957765 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AllyTransforms Book: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Ally-Houston/author/B08CFMKXR2?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true   The content of our show is educational only. Episode 129: Brenda Wollenberg (Part 2)

Brenda Wollenberg is an author and educator. She combines her education and experience as a nutritionist, social worker, and co-pastor in her work as a body /mind /spirit wellness coach. Over the past five years, she has expanded her training and scope of practice to help her clients understand how genetics influences overall wellness. She has worked for decades using metabolic typing to inform food plans, exercise routines, and stress management tools.    With the added epigenetic component, however—examining how behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect genes' expression—she now works, 1-1 and in a group setting, to help clients explore clinically relevant and nutritionally actionable genes, and discover the ideal way to eat, supplement, move and calm for their genetic profile.    Brenda is the author of 'Overweight Kids in a Toothpick World', and 'Eat, Sleep Move: For Your Genetic Body Type. How to Physically and Emotionally Care for a Unique You’. She has had articles in Canadian Living, Mclean's, and Family Fun and has also created In Balance Wellness programs for children, teens, and adults. Most recently, along with co-creator Alicia Mazari-Anderson, a fellow nutritionist with a Ph.D. in biology, Brenda has developed Gene Reset Blueprint: A 12-Week Program for Personalized Optimal Health.    Brenda’s decades of experience across a range of physical, emotional, and spiritual modalities, has enabled her to design a methodology that harnesses the power of genetics and epigenetics—the environment—to optimize good health. Episode 127: Melanie Martin, FdSc, DipION, mBANT, CNHC, IPE

Melanie Martin is a registered Nutritional Therapist, having studied at The Institute for Optimum Nutrition in Richmond London. The principle around which she was trained is that of Functional Medicine. Mel looks for the underlying causes of health issues rather than treating symptoms. Those underlying issues could be lifestyle, genetics, diet, existing drug treatments, or a whole host of things. Since she qualified and started practicing more than 10 years ago, Mel has become increasingly curious about psychology as an underlying cause or co-factor. She studied at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating in Colorado to try to understand more about this area of interest, and why some of us, Mel included, have these lifelong, often secret, and shame-filled, battles with food choices. Mel has also studied metabolic health extensively and has completed the Nutritional Network Low Carb Healthy Fat training for practitioners and many Continuing Professional Development hours. Mel heard Bitten Jonsson speak about food addiction in 2021, something she had intuited and had often heard clients allude to, so this was a real “missing piece” moment for her. She consequently completed Bitten’s SUGAR and Holistic Medicine Addiction training. She most recently completed a 15-week introductory course in counseling/psychotherapy and her next learning/development step as a practitioner is to train professionally as a counselor/psychotherapist. Today, Clarissa, Mel, and I talk about the following: Mel’s Personal/Professional Journey What are some common hormones such as estrogen & progesterone and why do they fluctuate? How do hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol impact appetite? What can we do? Do you have any suggestions for someone listening today? Episode 123: Dr. Gary Fettke

Dr. Gary Fettke is an Orthopedic Surgeon practicing in Tasmania, Australia. He has a major interest in preventative medicine and encourages his patients to lose weight before undergoing surgery.   Although his specialty is surgery, Gary believes it is much better to help people avoid surgery if at all possible, by taking preventative measures, which often involve altering the diet.   In recent years Gary has focused on the role of diet in the development of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. He has been speaking out on the combined role of sugar, fructose, refined carbohydrates, and polyunsaturated oils linking together to be behind inflammation and modern disease.   He has incurred the wrath of regulatory bodies for his stand on public health, but he and his wife, Belinda, whom we interviewed in Episode 9, remain active in defending the benefits of low carb healthy fat living. Episode 110: Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor

Mary-Frances O’Connor, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona where she conducts studies to better understand the grief process both psychologically and physiologically. She is a leader in the field of prolonged grief, a clinical condition in which people do not adjust to the acute feelings of grief and show increases in yearning, avoidance, and rumination. Her work primarily focuses on trying to tease out the mechanisms that cause this ongoing and severe reaction to loss. In particular, she is curious about the neurobiological, immune, and cardiovascular factors that vary between individual responses to grief. Dr. O’Connor’s book: The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss gives us a fascinating new window into one of the hallmark experiences of being human. O’Connor has devoted decades to researching the effects of grief on the brain, and in this book, she makes cutting-edge neuroscience accessible through her contagious enthusiasm and guides us through how we encode love and grief. With love, our neurons help us form attachments to others; but, with loss, our brain must come to terms with where our loved ones went, or how to imagine a future that encompasses their absence. Based on O’Connor’s own trailblazing neuroimaging work, research in the field, and her real-life stories, The Grieving Brain does what the best popular science books do, combining storytelling, accessible science, and practical knowledge that will help us better understand what happens when we grieve and how to navigate loss with more ease and grace. In today’s episode: How Mary-Frances got into the field of bereavement science Why it is so hard and takes so long to understand that when someone dies it is forever Why grief causes so many emotions What happens to the brain during grief How our understanding of grief has changed over time Why do some people adapt better than others when someone passes away What can we do when we are overwhelmed with grief? Can our grief change? Signature Question: If you could tell a younger version of yourself something about grief/grieving/bereavement – what would it be? Episode 102: Paul Churchill

Paul Churchill was a normal drinker in high school and most of college. He loved to drink. He played several sports in high school and football at Chapman University where he majored in Business and Spanish. His love for alcohol led him to Granada, Spain where he bought a bar in January 2006. He walked away from the bar after 34 months since he was drowning himself with alcohol. He attempted the geographical cure, moved back home to Colorado for a year, and then went to graduate school in Seattle at the University of Washington. He then moved to beautiful Bozeman, MT where he currently resides. Paul was alcohol-free from 2010- 2012 but he looks back at that duration of sobriety and says he was a dry drunk and was staying away from alcohol on willpower alone. In 2012, his unconscious mind got the best of him and he drank after being AF for over 2 years. Later that same evening around 2:30 am when gas stations couldn’t legally sell alcohol, Paul found himself googling if he could drink rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Talk about picking up right where he left off. Paul struggled to quit drinking for another couple of years until September 7th, 2014. In the summer of 2014, there was a DUI, a release of employment from a job, and a failed suicide attempt. After reaching out to family, and specific friends, starting a podcast, and a sobriety counter app, selecting a sponsor, eating right, and exercising, Paul Churchill took his last drink of alcohol on September 7th, 2014, and got his life back. Episode 100: Dr. Ellen Vora, MD

EPISODE 100!! Ellen Vora, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher, and she is the author of the bestselling book The Anatomy of Anxiety. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University. In her book Anatomy of Anxiety, she has a whole chapter on Food for Thought in which she shares her own personal story of discovering she had a food addiction. Today she shares her journey to recovery with food and how that has influenced her professional career today. Namely, in how she treats the whole person, looking for places where states like anxiety and depression might be rooted in the body, whether it’s less-than-ideal nutrition and an out-of-whack gut, or poor sleep and breathing. In today’s interview we talk about: Ellen’s personal story How food addiction plays a role in eating disorders How we need to watch out for contributing to eating disorders through a food addiction treatment modality The difference between true and false anxiety Why it’s important to treat false anxiety first The importance of a BOTH/AND approach in recovery: that multiple things can be true at the same time and that everybody has a right to their experience, regardless of what somebody else is experiencing. Why Ellen believes she can tolerate some of her addictive foods when she is in different countries and on different soil Does gut permeability combined with opiate-like addictive foods create a landscape for higher levels of food addiction in North America? Why do we have such a hard time asking for help? Why living in an Emotion-phobic culture can lead us to seek food rather than address our unmet needs How advertisers prey on our fear response which activates us into that unmet need scarcity mindset How do we get quiet to determine our needs in a world full of noise and adverse? Can you be radically intentional in the life choices you make? How do we find the middle in bringing the eating disorder world and the food addiction world together rather than them remaining so far apart and offering opposing treatments? He is a board-certified cardiologist and the medical director of Diet Doctor and the host of the Diet Doctor podcast. He focuses on preventing and reversing heart disease using food as medicine with a low-carbohydrate diet. He is also certified in functional medicine, nutrition, personal training, and behavior modification. Impressive right? In this episode we discuss the cholesterol confusion and how to talk to your doctor about this, the higher satiety eating intervention that Bret is currently excited about, and his thoughts on intermittent fasting, and food addiction. Dr. Bret Scher is a board-certified cardiologist and lipidologist practicing in San Diego and licensed to practice in seven states. He’s our full-time Medical Director, writes medical blogs, reviews guides and news stories for medical accuracy, and hosts The Diet Doctor Podcast. Dr. Scher’s main focus is on preventing and reversing heart disease naturally rather than putting patients on medication and performing surgery. When he started his own preventative wellness center he was introduced to the whole low-carb world. Being a bit skeptical at first, he was soon convinced by the benefits of a low-carb diet. In Dr. Scher’s many patients suffering from heart disease, he found that there was a big overlap with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance. It was all very interrelated. When he started treating his patients who suffered from heart disease with a low-carb diet, he could quickly see signs of improvements or even full reversal in all of these diseases. Dr. Scher has also obtained specialized certifications in functional medicine, nutrition, personal training, and behavior modification. He is also the author of the book Your best health ever! and he has a blog and website at lowcarbcardiologist.com. Episode 91: Dr. Ben Bikman

Dr. Bikman’s research focus is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Driven by his academic training (Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders), he is currently exploring the contrasting roles of insulin and ketones as key drivers of metabolic function. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings. The focus of Dr. Bikman’s lab (the Laboratory of Obesity and Metabolism) is twofold. First, they aim to identify the molecular mechanisms that explain the increased risk of disease that accompanies weight gain, with particular emphasis on the etiology of insulin resistance and disrupted mitochondrial function. Second, they hope to reveal novel cellular processes that are responsible for fat development and accrual, with a particular emphasis on white/brown fat and the contrasting effects of insulin and ketones. Much of the lab’s recent work is focused on the pathogenicity of the hormone insulin. Insulin, while necessary for healthy living, elicits significant and harmful changes in tissue metabolic function when chronically elevated. Several projects have stemmed from this work, including a focus on the varying effects of dietary macronutrients (e.g., carbohydrates vs. fats) on insulin homeostasis, the effects of insulin on brown adipose tissue (and metabolic rate), and insulin-induced brain alterations. The lab employs numerous pharmacological and genetic tools to better understand the origins and consequences of ceramide accumulation on various factors related to metabolic function, including signal transduction, substrate utilization, and energy expenditure. Episode 86: Dr. Loretta Breuning

Loretta Graziano Breuning, Ph.D. is the author of Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain Your Brain to Boost Your Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, and Endorphin Levels. She founded the Inner Mammal Institute to help people build new neural pathways to turn on their happy chemicals in new ways. (www.InnerMammalInstitute.org) As a Professor of Management at California State University, and a mom, Loretta was not convinced by prevailing theories of human motivation. While researching alternatives, she uncovered the brain chemistry we share with animals. She learned that each happy chemical evolved to motivate a specific survival behavior, not to make you feel good all the time for no reason. Then everything made sense, and she began creating resources to spread this knowledge: books, videos, blogs, podcasts, infographics, slide shows, social media, and a training program. Loretta's work has helped thousands of people "make peace with the animal inside." And she still marvels every day at the overlap between a wildlife documentary and the lyrics to a love song. Dr. Breuning’s work has been translated into Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, Turkish, and German. She has been quoted in Forbes, NPR, the Wall St. Journal, Fox, Time, NBC, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, Real Simple, and Psychologies. Her podcast is "The Happy Brain," and she's been a guest on many podcasts, including Almost 30, James Altucher, Brainfluence, Recovery Unscripted, Fat Burning Man, Humans 2.0, and Yogabody. He has also designed a course-based body weight management program called the Ideal Weight Program.   One interesting aspect for us at Food Junkies is how Dr. Guyenet upholds the belief that it IS calories that matter the most when it comes to obesity (and NOT sugar specifically).  He does however add that it IS the addiction to trigger foods, such as sugar that leads to overeating the calories that then lead to obesity.   In this episode: Dr. Guyenet's personal and professional journey The Obesity Model Processed Foods and Hyper-Palatability Food/Sugar Addiction Volume eating Weight loss/diets Signature question   Find Dr. Guyenet: Website: https://www.stephanguyenet.com/ Book: The Hungry Brain Twitter The content of our show is educational only. Episode 76: Martha Peirce

Martha Peirce, MSEd., RP* -Educator, Trainer, Consultant -International Trauma Specialist (in the process) Martha spent the first fifteen years of her career teaching foods, nutrition, and quantity food service courses at the high school and college levels in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ontario, Canada. She began her own recovery from an eating disorder, food addiction, and alcoholism over thirty-five years ago. In time, after much healing and further professional development, she started a new career. For over 30 years she has worked as a counselor and psychotherapist in private practice specializing in the treatment of addictions (especially food addiction), eating disorders, trauma, and codependency. Long before there was science to back up the concept of food addiction, Martha noticed in her own healing journey and that of many of her clients, sensitivity to healthy foods and an individual’s inability to eat certain healthy foods within moderation. This seemed comparable to the alcoholic’s craving for alcohol and the “phenomenon of craving” hence the concept of “food addiction.” Her work was validated by that of Kay Sheppard’s initial writing: Food Addiction: The Body Knows (www.kaysheppard.com). Martha had the opportunity to co-facilitate Recovery from Food Addiction workshops with Kay Sheppard early in her career. She receives ongoing supervision and training from Dr. Kate Hudgins, an internationally acclaimed expert in the area of treating trauma, addiction, and eating disorders. In recent years she has also had the opportunity to co-facilitate workshops with Dr. Kate Hudgins (www.therapeuticspiralmodel.com). From 2015 to 2019, Martha was honored to be a Senior Clinician and part of the Team that developed the 28-day in-patient and 5-day out-patient programs for the treatment of Food Addiction at Renascent (www.renascent.ca). It was discovered that the client was best served via the Team approach which included the Head Cook, Cooks, and the Dietician (Mary Bamford, RD) collaborating with Food Addiction Counsellors, and Martha, the Senior Clinician because of the complex nature of food addiction pathology and recovery process. During her affiliation with Renascent, she has been made aware of research that is now validating her grassroots personal and professional experience with food addiction treatment and recovery. Martha maintains her passion for her vocation and continues to maintain a full and rich private practice! *Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario In this Episode: Martha’s personal story and AHA moment Her thoughts on specific food plans 12 Steps Codependency Residential Treatment Many take-aways The content of our show is educational only. Episode 67: Summer Innanen

Summer Innanen is a professionally trained coach specializing in body image, self-worth, and confidence. She helps people all over the world to stop living behind the numbers on their scales through her private and group coaching at summerinnanen.com. She is the best-selling author of Body Image Remix: Embrace your body and unleash the fierce confident woman within and the creator of the flagship You, On Fire – an online group coaching program dedicated to helping people break out of the diet culture cage, get free from body shame and live life on their own terms so they can wear, say and do what they want. She is the host of Eat The Rules, a podcast dedicated to anti-dieting, body image, intersectional feminism, and empowering people to live life on their own terms, where she has interviewed leading body image and anti-diet experts and activists such as Isabel Foxen Duke, Virgie Tovar, Chrissy King, and Ragen Chastain. She has been featured in Refinery29, FabUplus Magazine, The Huffington Post, Beautiful Magazine, and featured on several chart-topping podcasts including, Food Psych, Listen to Your Body, and The F*ck It Diet Podcast. She lives in Vancouver, BC Canada with her husband and toddler son. On this episode of the Food Junkies podcast, we bring you Clarissa’s BEST FRIEND from high school, Summer Innanen, to talk about all things body image, body neutrality, and healing from body dissatisfaction. Summer is the best-selling author of Body Image Remix, host of the podcast Eat The Rules, and creator of You, On Fire – an online group coaching program dedicated to helping people get free from body shame. She also co-runs the Body Image Coach Certification program helping anti-diet professionals learn to work with clients around body image.  Growing up, and in high school, Clarissa and Summer both had body image issues but Clarissa doesn’t remember talking about it or sharing any deep conversations about what they thought of themselves. After high school, we both began an unhealthy and disordered relationship with food where we struggled with weight, diets, and the societal pressures to be thin. Even at their thinnest they still hated our bodies.  Today Summer shares her personal journey to body image recovery and healing. She shares how body image develops, how diet trauma affects us, perfectionism, why we are always comparing ourselves to others, and how we must let go of the relentless pursuit of thinness and free ourselves by rejecting the rules and reclaiming our power. How changing the way you feel about your body isn’t actually about liking the way you look.  Clarissa and Summer have different stories of healing and recovery with food. While Clarissa’s includes being abstinent from addictive foods, Summer’s lead her to an intuitive eating approach where she stopped trying to makeover her plate and start making over what was going on inside her head. Just because we don’t eat the same way doesn’t mean we can’t heal the same way when it comes to transforming the way we see ourselves and igniting our hope, our power, and shifting our outlook on life. So in this episode, we don’t talk about the food, we talk about the thoughts and feelings about ourselves that often lead us to EAT THE DRUG FOODS to drown out the noise and numb out.  Follow Summer: Website Podcast: Eat the Rules Instagram: @summerinnanen Facebook Twitter The content of our show is educational only. He worked at the Salvation Army for 3 years running their Drug and Alcohol Rehab program and managing the homeless shelter in Sacramento California. Mark has a passion for helping others to overcome their addictions and afflictions as well as working with the homeless. Mark went on to build a very successful business that coordinated with hospitals and drug and alcohol treatment centers to medically manage detoxes before realizing his passion for helping the helpless, hopeless, hurting, and addicted. He earned his MBA and Pastoral Ordination while co-founding and building the 501c3 Furniture Bank, Inc. with his wife Tami. As Mark grew older his weight became an issue and in time lead to health issues. Like most folks, he tried every diet, food program, pill, and powder, but had no success. Mark tried to find a solution within the existing 12 Step based eating disorder and food programs but struggled to adhere to their suggestions. November 26, 2017, Mark hit his bottom and in desperation found Bitten Jonsson through the internet. Bitten responded to Mark’s request and helped him to see that he was addicted to sugar and bad carbs just like his addiction to drugs and alcohol! The light at the end of the tunnel appeared! Mark continued to work with other existing food programs but found the 12 Step approach severely lacking. At the encouragement of Bitten and others, Mark decided to create what he was seeking. Mark is the founder of SCAA – Sugar and Carb Addicts Anonymous. A 12 Step Fellowship that has been meeting via Zoom since May of 2018. With just under 500 active members worldwide, there are 19 meetings weekly. The SCAA fellowship works from the AA Big Book and follows the 12 Steps as their suggested way to recover. Mark has been married to Tami for 26 years. They have a 23-year-old daughter Kai and reside 1n Queen Creek Arizona. Mark has published 3 Daily Devotionals and (3) 12 Step Recovery Workbooks.
