Remembering JoJo Baby and Heklina
Long before drag was a mainstay of reality television, LGBTQ+ folks turned to drag for fun, to challenge society and explore their gender through an artistic, comedic and performative lens.Sadly, we recently lost two fierce drag legends who meant a lot not just to us, but the world.Heartbreaking. In March, JoJo Baby died from cancer at the age of 51.An early guest of our podcast, JoJo was a beloved Chicago nightclub personality and entertainer who dazzled patrons with their outlandish looks and puppetry. And just last week, Heklina, who shaped the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows at the club STUD was found dead at the age of 55 in her London hotel by her dear friend Peaches Christ.Today we remember two queer culture legends, Chicago’s JoJo Baby and San Francisco’s Heklina, who both died this past month and the impact they had on so many people’s lives, including ours.Plus-➤ Everybody’s daddy Pedro Pascal plays a gay cowboy in Pedro Almodóvar’s Western Short ‘Strange Way of Life.’➤ Billy Porter is set to play novelist, activist and essayist James Baldwin.➤ Equality Florida issues an advisory warning for LGBTQ+ travelers.Episode #3074

Remembering Heklina: Heklina Will Not Be Silenced
We are heartbroken.San Francisco legend Heklina was found dead in her hotel room on Monday morning in London by her longtime friend, collaborator and co-star Peaches Christ. Over the years we taped so many good shows with Heklina that it’s hard to pick one, so this week we’re reposting our favorites to celebrate the amazing life and legacy of this amazing comedian and drag queen. Along with her gal pal Peaches Christ, Heklina shaped and created the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows and nights at STUD. After the name change of the shows to Mother, Heklina and Peaches moved their events to Oasis, a bar she co-founded with her longtime friend D'Arcy Drollinger. Heklina touched so many people's lives, including ours. A fierce, original drag queen with a wonderfully twisted sense of humor, Heklina was a popular guest in the early days of our podcast Feast of Fun, back when we called it Feast of Fools. Later on she went on to create her own podcast “Drag Time with Heklina” where she interviewed many notable queer artists including Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters. Back in 2006, our first live podcast in San Francisco featured Heklina in it, and she was so befuddled about what the Internet was that in a rare moment, she showed up out of drag in her everyday clothes for the show. Despite always being super busy, Heklina took time to visit with us whenever we were in town or when she came to Chicago. It’s devastating to think about the sorrow, but it’s comforting to know that her humor, style and rascally nature lives on in the lives of so many artists, LGBTQ+ folks and the people who loved her in San Francisco. Thanks for all the memories, laughs and fun Heklina. Here’s what we think her twisted sense of humor would have said about her own death: “The next roast of Heklina will be held at Fleischmann’s Crematorium.”--------- Originally posted FOF #2344 - Heklina Will Not Be Silenced - 06.14.16Heklina is a living legend- she started her amazing drag show in San Francisco way back in 1996. This iconic night of drag, then known as Trannyshack, ignited the careers of countless entertainers including Lady Gaga, Peaches Christ and Ana Matronic.Over the years, Heklina saved her dollar tips and got some friends to invest in her own club Oasis only to rebrand the drag show as Mother and not without a little controversy.Today, Heklina joins us to take a look at the horrific shooting in Orlando and how gay bar owners are responding to the violence.Plus--• How drag queens have gone from being fringe acts to mainstream attractions.• Why San Francisco can't have nice things.• Facebook may delete all your photos if you don’t install this app.• Heklina’s tips on picking up a straight guy on Craigslist!

JoJo Baby Finds a Skull - Best of Feast of Fun
Sad news everyone. The legendary club and drag performer Jojo Baby, who for decades entertained people onstage and in every stage including everyday life with their makeup, costumes and puppets died from complications with cancer, they were 51. Today we repost one of our earlier shows from 2007 “JoJo Finds a Skull” when JoJo made the evening news upon finding a skull rolling in a boiling pot of water when shopping for mannequin parts in a strangers home they met on Craigslist. Coming of age in Chicago, JoJo was a big part of our scene in the nightclubs and the Radical Faeries. For many people of our generation JoJo was one of the first entertainers people met in the 90s and early 2000s when they first moved to town. Jojo is survived by his brother Jay Jay Arguellas and so many club performers, artists and drag queens he helped mentor and inspire. Jojo’s own mentor was puppeteer and trans pioneer Greer Lankton, whose work with Andy Warhol laid the foundation for a lot of great art, including building the first Big Bird puppet for Sesame Street. Big Bird’s mother was a trans woman, and JoJo Baby was Big Bird’s sibling. Queer art is a huge part of everyone’s DNA, and although they may be gone in body, JoJo’s creations, creativity and love is still very much alive. Thank you JoJo for being a part of my life and all our lives. You live on in all of us. You live on in all of us. Please enjoy this encore presentation of Feast of Fun: “JoJo Baby Finds a Skull.” Thank you for all the glitter, glamour and guts. But most of all thank you for the fun and friendship. ❤️
