Danny Green: anti-violence, raising a boxer and the night at sea he thought was his last.

There's no doubt that Danny Green is a legend of Australian sport. He's the only Australian boxer to win FOUR world titles across three different weight divisions, and he's also represented his country at Commonwealth and Olympic games level. But that's just the start! Danny is highly respected in the community for his philanthropy and his passion for supporting people from all walks of life. Since 2012 Danny has dedicated himself to (and self-funded) his anti-violence movement, the Coward Punch campaign, and has successfully prevented countless senseless and unnecessary attacks on helpless victims. Since Danny started using the term Coward Punch, it has rapidly replaced ‘one-punch’ and ‘king hit’ in the Australian vernacular used to describe these often deadly attacks, and it's even now used in the courtroom. This conversation is full of laughter as we get some amazing insight in to Danny's friendship with Anthony Mundine, his parenting style and the times in his life that he's been the most terrified (spoiler alert: that story is hands-down the funniest part of the episode)! The invasive photos made front page news, publicly revealing Dani to the world for the first time. Prior to that moment, we had all known Dean Laidley, the champion premiership-winning footballer with the West Coast Eagles and North Melbourne, who went on to be an outstanding senior coach at North Melbourne Football Club for seven seasons. We are in awe at the courage and mental resilience it took for Dani to essentially live two lives while excelling in the brutal, alpha competitive world of professional AFL football.  From her gender dysphoria diagnosis, to her inspiring work as an advocate for the transgender community, to her aspirations to one day coach in the AFL again, you're going to love this conversation with a woman, who despite all odds, is thriving, equal parts proud and humble, and leading the way for so many. Ed O'Malley echoes Ted Lasso's 'be curious, not judgemental'

Ed O'Malley, a former elected official in Kansas, left his role to start the Kansas Leadership Center which has impacted tens of thousands of people in his local community. Ed is a fascinating and curious person. He has this fantastic way of talking about leadership often being the act of disappointing people at a rate that they previously couldn't absorb. He makes a really clear distinction between authority and exercising leadership, noting that just because you're in a role of authority doesn't mean that you choose to exercise leadership or have the skills to do it. This leader is passionate about the fact that leadership is actually a skill that can be learned and then an exercise in itself. We cover the challenge of the gun laws in the United States, and Ed's desire to see a formal global collaboration of leadership programs around the world to support a more creative and collaborative approach to leadership.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Harry Kewell: Never stop looking forward to find opportunities to make mistakes

A sportsman who is always looking ahead, who admits he rarely reflects on his abilities as a player, Harry Kewell discusses the work ethic that saw him leaving everything on the field in every single training session, and the ramifications he suffered as a player whenever he eased off, even just a little. As a footballer, Harry was blessed to have everything on hand 24/7 from doctors to chefs. He was told what to do every minute of the day since the age of 16. When he retired and came out the other side he talks about the shock of having to figure it out alone and the relief of finding a new routine that he credits with keeping him strong mentally and physically. You'll hear Harry call Ange Postecoglou ‘the nicest person in the world’ and you'll see his genuine willingness to share anything with anyone if they are willing to learn. Harry takes us on a journey of his intrinsic connection to the game of football - his ability to see the movement patterns, the way he can differentiate between the sound of the ball when a player makes a perfect cross or when it's slightly off target, and how he teaches his players about what they can understand from the way the football simply moves across the grass.  Start your leadership journey today. Why Tara Winkler has dedicated her life to end an era of orphanages

Tara Winkler is an extraordinary Australian humanitarian. In 2011, she was recognised as the New South Wales Young Australian of the Year for her work in establishing the Cambodian Children's Trust.  Her inspirational TED Talk on why we need to end the era of orphanages has been viewed more than 1.2 million times and helped to shine a powerful light on the plight of more than 8 million children around the globe living in orphanage-like institutions. Many of those children are actually in fact not orphans, but are removed from extremely poor families and exploited.  Tara's work in shining a light on this situation has created a global shift towards a better way.  It is brilliant and inspiring to hear from Tara, who since the age of 19 has dedicated her life to exposing how power, privilege, and oppression intersect with charity work. Her passion for igniting local wisdom, investing in preventative measures, and highlighting that people living in abject poverty don't lack the wherewithal, just the resources makes for an incredibly compelling and eye-opening conversation. I'm sure you're going to enjoy this chat with Tara Winkler. Donate to support the groundbreaking work of the Cambodian Children’s Trust here.  In this episode, I mention Tara’s powerful TED Talk, a beautifully crafted 13 minute deep dive into why we need to end the era of orphanages. Avoiding confronting people who need to be confronted You must coach, mentor, council and administer tough love when needed 4. Be totally accessible and available to all staff Keep your antennae constantly massaged by walking around and talking to your people. 5. Manage your time Spend equal time on strategy (the creative) and execution (the practical) and communicate endlessly to all staff. Keep messaging as simple as possible! 6. Don’t Be Complacent Constantly challenge your existing model and strategies, lead a culture of innovation and constant change to keep moving forward. Demand an innovation culture! Constantly swim against the stream and not simply replicate what others are doing. 7. Staff are your greatest asset – bullshit! Only the RIGHT staff, in the RIGHT roles are your greatest asset. Poor performing staff or staff in the WRONG roles are your biggest liabilities. Aces in places! Hire on positive attitude, cultural fit, teamwork, determination to succeed. 8. Mandela’s Leadership Legacy Take on your base when needed. Leaders Courage to change conventional wisdom 9. Leaders must radiate optimism, enthusiasm and can-do spirit It must be part of your DNA and part of organisations culture. Staff are watching when you don’t realise they are watching! 10. Leaders must raise the bar and lift expectations Challenge your people and expect them to achieve.  11. Set a clear and compelling vision sell it constantly, Hold people to account in achieving this vision. Give them the tools and recourses to achieve it and celebrate when attained! 12. Project a resilient and persistent persona As well as a strong sense of self-worth! As a leader you MUST radiate these qualities. 15. Leave egos at the door Australian character is built on an egalitarian ethos. Earn respect because of actions not title, age or rank. And don’t blame others if outcomes go off track – ask yourself (and your team), what are you going to do about it?  16. Find ways to prevail Try unconventional strategies (within the rules) if conventional strategies are not working. If everyone is going left, how do we go right, and outflank opposition? 17. Focus equally on what not to do, as well as what to do Identify inefficiencies, excessive layers, outdated systems and roadblocks that overcome and prevent positive outcomes.  18. Leaders are readers Seek out new ideas by reading of other successful people and organisations. Find a mentor and have an enquiring mind. 19.
