Aharon (bonus episode) - "Innocent and pure from sin"

Aharon was hosted on the podcast a few months ago and felt he wanted to say more. I recommend listening to his full interview, and then listening to this very special conversation we had about his late brother, Mohammed Bahar, and about retrieving our humanity. Check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Yehavit  **** A few important disclaimers: I created and funded this podcast privately. I don’t belong to any organization, nor does it represent anyone other than myself. Secondly, I don’t intend this content to provide a justification or excuse for the actions people interviewed did in their past, but rather to learn from their personal experiences and gain insight as to what the process of transformation looks like. Certain parts of the episode could be triggering for you, and I advise taking into consideration that some of the events discussed are morally and ethically challenging (to say the least). . And lastly: I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I work as the indigenous people of this country and pay my respects to their elders, past and emerging. **** Thank you Roy Geva for the soundtrack . Ita - The responsibility of transformation

Ita Segev is a writer, performance artist, and organizer from Jerusalem who’s been living and making work in NY for the past 12 years.  In this episode she charts the complex map she’s found towards her freedom as a trans woman, its relationship to Palestinian liberation, and her commitment to dismantling the split which allows people to dehumanize others while loving those they perceive to be “like them”. Ita takes us through lessons from her Jewish ancestors, years of secrets and failed attempts to assimilate into militaristic toxic masculinity, the violence she witnessed during her army service, her desire to erase and escape her past in NYC, her learning from Black feminists, and embracing of her anti-Zionism and transness in an American context that never felt like her own.  Coming back to Israel during Covid, more grounded in her sense of self and her beliefs, Ita shared how rediscovering the love she has for this land and her people reminded her not only what systems she is fighting against, but what future she is fighting for.  You can follow Ita on Instagram at @Itaqt, and reach out to her for writing collaborations both for TV/film and for online publications. Yoni - "Why Did I Enlist?"

** TRIGGER WARNING ** (suicide, self-harm) *** “Yoni” didn’t question for one second that he had to serve in the Israeli military when he was 17 years old. And even once he was there, and suffering immensely, he couldn’t imagine the option of finding a way out. Today, he makes political graffiti art that aims to make 17 year old Israelis ask the question that he didn’t dare ask himself at the time: “Why did I enlist?”. This graffiti has become somewhat of an icon in the physical landscape of Israel, but no one really knows who’s behind it. Rotem - Thankful for failing pilot course

What does “Liberal Zionist” mean? And what is it about this concept that made Rotem question, and eventually dismisses it completely? After training in the elite units of the Israeli military, he began researching the Nakba and everything we weren’t taught about it in history class. Then, through intense solo Arabic studying, he was able to really listen to Palestinians and their stories. Today, he is an activist who stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and believes that the only way to achieve peace, is first to achieve justice. ********* A few important disclaimers: This podcast is created and funded by me privately. Rita - Memories from a 17 year old pacifist

Rita, now in her 30s, immigrated from Ukraine With her family when she was an infant. While struggling to assimilate as a teenager living in the city of Beer Sheva, she was introduced to some different ideas about the world than the ones she was used to hearing. This led her to decide not to serve in the military even though the law requires it. At 17, without knowing anyone else who had done this at the time, she was scared but determined. We met in an activism chapter in our college, and have been good friends ever since. Today she works with youth at risk and does her best to model for them how to stick to their own truth no matter what. Before we start, it’s important to note that we recorded this episode almost a year ago, before the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, so take that into account while listening. ********* A few important disclaimers: This podcast is created and funded by me privately. Odeliya - From teaching Zionism to unlearning it

Odeliya grew up in the Jewish neighborhood of Armon Ha’Natziv, which is according to international law an illegal settlement. Her father, a firm believer in Zionism, taught her how to use the art of debate - which is why she’s now such a good advocate for the rights of the Naqab (Negev) Bedouins, and the Palestinian struggle at large. Odeliya is one of my biggest inspirations; she is currently getting her bachelor's degree in media studies, worked up until recently in the Negev (Naqab) forum for civil equality, and teaches groups of teenagers about the political context we live in and how to understand systemic violence. I know every demonstration she joins will be filled with joy no matter what since she has her own special way of doing everything in life with a smile. She is a free spirit working relentlessly so that everyone else can be free as well. Sharon - From pointing a gun to pointing a camera

Raised by a father who was heavily involved in the Israeli forces, Sharon was very motivated to serve in the military. But during his service in the west bank, he realized something was very wrong. Today he doesn’t want to ever hold a gun again, but the process he went through took years. Listen to his story of becoming disillusioned. Sharon is an activist and a long-time friend of mine. And though he shares his name with a former leader of the Israeli government who has caused the Palestinian people a lot of pain, I ask that you try and give him a chance. He’s a talented artist and photographer who uses his medium to create change in his society’s perceptions. He is also a community organizer who spends every waking hour connecting between people, and leading spaces that use art and culture as tools for co-resistance. Enjoy the episode! And lastly: I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I work as the indigenous people of this country, and pay my respects to their elders, past and emerging. *** You can follow Sharon on Instagram at: Wearefree_studio And me at @yehavit on Instagram (or write to [email protected] if you’re not on Instagram) Stuff we mentioned: Ahed Tamimi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJqH7_xYKi4&ab_channel=AJ%2B https://www.breakingthesilence.org.il/

Merphie - Growing up on the ruins of Deir Yassin

Merphie grew up in a religious, Zionist home in Jerusalem. When she was a teenager, she discovered what the system doesn't want Israelis to know - that she and her family live on the ruins of Deir Yassin, a pre-1948 Palestinian village that had been massacred during the Nakba. This sent her on a long journey towards solidarity with the Palestinian struggle and ultimately the rejection of the Zionist regime and ideology.  Merphie worked for Breaking the Silence for 5 years and is currently a student, and youth educator for the Forum for Regional Thinking. She has a special talent for advocating for the Palestinian struggle and has been doing it on several different fronts with grace, respect, and a sharp sense of justice.  **** A few important disclaimers: Anything and everything she said during the interview is her personal opinion and does not represent any organization she’s worked for.
