181. The Whole Man | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

Recently, The Survey of American Life found that millions of men have dropped out of the workforce, colleges, dating, and friendships. Those who responded that they have no friends went from 3% in 1990 to 15% in 2021. And men are not only disappearing from relationships, but from the church as well. In this series of conversations, Rasool Berry and Dr. Maliek Blade lead the group into conversations that explain how The Whole Man Project seeks to address these issues by looking at four components of a man's whole life, applying Scripture and practical wisdom to the head (mental health and theological truth), heart (emotional health and relationships), hands (vocation and physical health), and soul (spiritual health and community).   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧YouTube Music: https://go.odb.org/yt-music-playlist LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? What comes to mind when you hear the words “prophet” and “prophecy?” Often we think of someone who is a spiritual meteorologist who forecasts history and writes it down before it happens. But bottom line, prophets and prophetesses were God’s messengers, delivering a message from God that most times people weren’t very excited to hear. 175. How to Read the Psalms | Week 5 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

The Psalms are not a random collection of ancient poems, but are an intentionally organized testimony of a faithful God who hears all who cry out to him in praise or pain, wisdom or confusion, in confidence or doubt. The narrative arc of this anthology is not only about past movements of God in Israel, but offers future promises about where all of Creation is headed—toward a new reality where we dwell with God and he with us, forever. In this series, we will be exploring an anthology that tells a bigger story than its individual parts. This anthology is not made up of poems from one person, but includes poems from several different authors. It includes poems that cover different time periods and poems that were written in different locations and even countries. Yet this collection of poems has a very specific theme and structure, and the overall anthology tells a story—a very important story—a surprising story.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧YouTube Music: https://go.odb.org/yt-music-playlist LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 169. The Fiery Furnace | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

The "Fiery Furnace" plays an important role in how the story of the Bible is told. It describes how evil things can get, but the lengths to which God will go to rescue his kids and set things right. In our hands, furnaces are agents of destruction and evil—destroying what is good and promoting what is evil. In God’s hands, fiery furnaces purify, shape, and set right. And ultimately, God did this setting right by going into the furnace himself and coming out on the other side with the keys to death and hades. And as a result of this, as we all experience living in a fiery furnace—living in a world that still has evil and sin and destruction—we can look forward to the day when Jesus will burn away all that is evil, leaving all that is truly good.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧YouTube Music: https://go.odb.org/yt-music-playlist LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 159. What's In A Name? | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

"What's in a name?" is a famous question Juliet asked in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. And while she wasn't asking the question about the Bible, when you read the Bible, you find that names mean a lot. Great meaning is attached to both people and places. And so it should be no surprise that when it comes to God, the central figure in the Scriptures, His name—or actually His names—matters a lot. So much so, in fact, that one name can't fully represent God's power and majesty. Join the group this week as they discover how knowing the names of God in the Bible can help us appreciate more of who God is. What's in a name? Apparently a lot.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧YouTube Music: https://go.odb.org/yt-music-playlist LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? When you read the Gospels, the Pharisees play a prominent role. So, when you hear the word "Pharisee," what do you think of? The dictionary defines a Pharisee as "a self-righteous person; a hypocrite." But were all Pharisees self-righteous hypocrites? Did all Pharisees reject Jesus? Or is it possible that how we think about the Pharisees is more of a stereotype? Of course, there are good reasons for the stereotype, but does the stereotype ever break down? 155. The Pharisees | Week 1 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

Join the group as they lean into a few passages that may shine a new light on "The Pharisees."   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧YouTube Music: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPOUA7GLxXIGx5cOBWxJyaBmCH-zZPZdM LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 154. The Good Shepherd | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

The Bible uses many metaphors to teach us about God, and one of the most common of those metaphors is "shepherd." But of course, metaphors only work when you're familiar with the cultural details. Dr. Tim Laniak joins the group to take them on a fascinating journey into the world of shepherds and Biblical passages about them. Drawing on his research living with Bedouin shepherds who lead their flocks in the same regions where Abraham and David once did, Tim explores how shepherds and sheep help us understand both God and ourselves better.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 153. Amazing Moments in Luke | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

For most Christ-followers arguably the most familiar use of the word amazing is in the hymn “Amazing Grace.” And rightly so. God’s grace is truly amazing. But recently the Discover the Word group had a series of conversations about how amazing Jesus himself was to the people who encountered him in the first century. We saw nine times in Mark’s gospel when people were described as “amazed” at something Jesus said or did. This week, we want to move that conversation forward, by seeing five times in Luke when a similar thing occurs—people are amazed at Jesus.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 142. John 9 and 10 | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

There are so many stories we read in the Gospels where we wish we had more details. Jesus tells parables that we wish had more of an explanation. Jesus often uses complicated metaphors that we wish came with more questions and answers. Basically, we often wish we had more context to understand what Jesus is driving at. Well for the next two weeks, we are going to focus on one of the stories in the Gospels that comes with soooooo many details, context, questions, responses, parables, and metaphors. It’s a fascinating story, and it’s one that I think sets us up to think differently about our lives as we think about what it means to follow Jesus today. Let’s go on a journey together to unpack this multi-scene story in John 9 and 10, and see how this might influence our understanding of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 128. Let Us... | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

There is a phrase that appears continuously in the scriptures, particularly it seems to be an idea that is important to the writer of the letter to the Hebrews. And what makes this phrase interesting is that some see it as a command. I would suggest, rather, that it is an invitation—an invitation to join with the writer in walking with Jesus. The phrase? “Let us…” He is not telling his readers what they must do, but rather he is inviting them to join with him in pursuing these things together. The phrase “let us” appear thirteen times in Hebrews, and, for this series of conversations, we want to cherry-pick several of those invitations for closer consideration.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? "Eating the bread of anxious toil." How does that make you feel? Well, the Discover the Word group goes on a journey this week, searching for the word "toil" in the Bible. They'll start at the beginning in the story of Creation in Genesis, touch down twice in the middle of the Old Testament, and then find the word "toil" in two New Testament passages. And interestingly, in following the theme of "toil" in the Bible, we discover that this idea, in a lot of ways, tells the story of the Bible, and points to some freeing and life-giving teaching of Jesus that will make the time we spend toghether this week worthwhile. 116. Paul, the Letter Writer | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

Many Christians today imagine the apostle Paul sitting down at a desk one afternoon in a quiet room all by himself and writing a letter to one of the first-century churches he started on one of his missionary journeys. A letter we now have included in our New Testament. And when he finished writing that letter, he signed it, sealed it, and put it in the mail. That is the way we write letters, or the way our grandparents wrote them. But is that how Paul wrote his letters in the first century? Join the Discover the Word group as our friend Randy Richards joins us to show us how basically every aspect of that scenario about writing letters is wrong. In these conversations called “Paul, the Letter Writer,” we’ll discover what letter writing was like in the first century, and how that influences how we read Paul’s letter today.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 100. Forgiveness--The Story of Easter | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

One of the debated areas of biblical theology has to do with what we could call “atonement theory.” In other words, how did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish our salvation. This is not a debate about “if” his death accomplished it, but “how.” That’s all well and good, but our intent this Easter season is to focus on the fact of our forgiveness being made possible on the cross—not the way that forgiveness operated. 99. Spiritual Formation | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

What do you think of when you hear the words, "You need to grow up?" What does it mean to be a "grown-up?" In our culture a big part of maturity is independence. An essential part of adult life is independence. That's why it's very confusing to our minds that in Christ, growing up is growing into complete and utter dependence on God. As believers growing doesn't make us need God less. In fact as we grow up in Christ, we need our Savior more desperately. This week on Discover the Word, spiritual formation director Shalini Bennett joins the group to share with us some spiritual formation practices that can help us grow in love and dependence on God.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 98. The Mother Side of God | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

What was your relationship like with your mom? Positive? Negative? We talk a lot about God being Our Father… you know, the one in Heaven who has a hallowed name. But there are a few places in the Bible where God is described in motherly terms, so the group thought it might be fun to explore some of those places together. And as we do, maybe keep this question in mind: how does God being like a mother help us get a sense of who God is, what God does, and how God relates to us? 97. It's About Time | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

We humans march along a timeline of life. Birth. Middle. Death. We make plans and measure our progress along the line of life. But what if our timeline of life is a false perspective? What if life is measured not by days, months, or years or even by minutes and hours? What if our entire lifetime is really an existence beyond time? The Bible offers a rich understanding of time, translated through various cultures over what we chart as thousands of years. How might we live our lives differently if we move from interpreting our lives as time-bound and instead, see them as God does, time-less as we live in an unending relationship with Him?   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 94. He's Coming Back | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. And, like MacArthur did for those he cared about, Jesus has assured us that, in fact, He will return some day.   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? We live in a world of neighbors. Next door. Across the street and around the corner. But also in the next cubicle at work and in the next county, state and country. We share our planet with global neighbors. And yet, how many of our neighbors do we really know? In a world of “stranger danger” we tend to pull back from those around us. 89. Lydia | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

We live in a very different time from the time of the Bible. One of the more significant areas of difference has to do with women and the opportunities they now have. With that in mind, when we do have a woman presented—especially in positive terms and with her name in the text—we should pay extra close attention. Doubt. One thing that every person who has lived long enough has in common is a struggle with doubt. Whether it’s questioning our calling because “How could God use me?” or prayers that have been not yet answered which can raise the question: Is God willing or able to help?” the issue of doubt is universal. What the Scriptures reveal is that the presence of faith does not necessarily mean the absence of doubt. In fact, we find examples of those who continued in the midst of their doubts. 72. Sinners Dinners | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread

The gospels tell us that Jesus dined with sinners. All kinds. Often. What was shocking in the first century can still surprise us today: Jesus included the most messed up in His dinner table conversations – because He included them in His love. Scripture describes Jesus at dinners with several kinds of sinners including tax collectors, Pharisees, sinful women, thieves, the “unclean” and others. How do we respond when Jesus invites sinners to dinners? Do we say yes to His invitation to dine – as sinners - with our perfect God? And what about His invitation for others? What if we host sinners dinners and throw open the doors of our homes and our hearts to whoever might come that they too might know Jesus?   WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE: 📱On our website: https://www.discovertheword.org 🎧Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3x2Swlq 🎧Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3mk8ra1 🎧Amazon Music: https://amzn.to/3D9Tttv 🎧Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/3x7gMD3 LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 69. Does Jesus Really Want Me to Hate My Family? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

"Family first." "The most important thing in the world is family." "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." There are lots of quotations that lift up the value of family. But there's one quote from a very influential person that doesn't usually make onto prints that people hang on their walls. It's a quote from Jesus, when he said "Unless you hate your family, you cannot be my disciple." Really? Yeah, it's right there in Luke 14:26. You can look it up. So, "Does Jesus Really Want Me to Hate My Family?" That's the question we ask in this episode of Discover the Word.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 66. Who Am I? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Scripture tells us that when we enter a relationship with Jesus, we become new creations, the old has passed away and the new has come. But just what does this mean for you and me? Who are we in Jesus? Understanding who we are rises out of understanding who God is. The question Who Am I is best answered by looking at who God is…and then seeing ourselves in relationship to who He is.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 64. What's True About God from 2 Kings | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Our circumstances rarely have us living a life that fits into neat categories with predictable outcomes. As followers of Jesus, we all struggle with challenges from both within and without. But aspects of God’s unchanging character are revealed throughout Scripture, and His intimate knowledge of each of our lives is where we can plant our faith and trust. God is always at work. He provides in unexpected ways; He works in ways we may not see; He can use anyone for His purposes; and He always goes before us. Author and Bible teacher Vivian Mabuni returns to Discover the Word to help us explore how “What’s True about God in 2 Kings” is still true about God in our lives today.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 63. Who Is The Greatest? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

The way the world and the Bible define greatness could not be more different! The world describes greatness as strength, power, influence, and wealth. In the Bible, greatness is smallness. Greatness pursues reconciliation and forgiveness. Greatness welcomes even the least valuable in the world’s eyes. Greatness serves. It becomes obvious that the Bible’s story of greatness points us toward the only One who has fulfilled all of these criteria and is truly great—Jesus. And yet there’s also an invitation here too. Is it possible that in following Jesus’ example that we can become truly great by taking on the nature of a servant, and laying down our lives for others?   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 62. Why Can't We All Just Get Along? | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Someone once said that if it weren’t for people, life would be easy. Right? But people are pretty much the whole point when it comes to God’s great love. In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he spends most of the book laying out the theology of the gospel. Then he turns to apply his teaching to the practical of how the first century church in Rome can get along with each other as well as with their home city as followers of Christ. As we dig into Paul’s advice, we’ll find principles that translate for how as followers of Christ, we, too, can get along with each other and with those outside our faith communities.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 60. Testing | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

We don't always like tests, but because tests and testing pop up throughout the Bible at key points, it bears taking a closer look at this theme, with a little help from some Christians from the early church. Dr. Ryan Clevenger joins the group and brings his expertise in "Patristics"--the study of early Christian writers often called "Church Fathers"--to get their perspectives on the difficult times of testing we all face in life. You'll be surprised and encouraged by how relevant their perspectives of testing in the Bible are, as we discover that God does not test us in order to catch us or make us fail, but to provide us the chance to learn and grow into the likeness of Christ.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 59. Living in Complex Times | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Does life seem way more complex and complicated than it ever used to be? Well, it's not just you--the world has become more complex. Just think back to 1980 and begin to list off all the things that have changed since then. Well, in complex times like these, it can be helpful to remember that many of God's children in the Bible found themselves in culturally complex times. And during this episode of Discover the Word, Rasool Berry leads Elisa Morgan, Bill Crowder, and Daniel Ryan Day in examining one of those people. Her name is Esther, and her story is full of complex situations. Some that still baffle Bible interpreters. Gain insight into how to navigate our complex situations by exploring Esther's story with the Discover the Word group.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 56. Ecclesiastes | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

We often don't know what our expectations are until they go unmet. And then suddenly, we discover that the things we put our hope in can't help us, satisfy us, or make us happy. George Bernanos once said, "In order to be prepared to hope in what does not deceive, we must first lose hope in everything that deceives." This is what the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes is all about. The wise teacher brings attention to many of our expectations and false hopes, and systematically crushes any confidence we have in what we think could make life worth living. But, actually, this is good news! By discovering our false hopes, we can discover true life and purpose in Jesus.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? What are some things that are good in abundance? Favorite foods? Time with special people? Options? Opportunities? What is it about abundance that makes it so pleasant? It is to say that, as Psalm 23 put it, my cup overflows. That is abundance. It is important to not only see these aspects of spiritual abundance of which the scriptures speak. In a most unexpected way, Jesus personified this consuming fire in both life and death—by the fire of self-sacrifice, bringing to light the lies that his enemy has always wanted us to believe, bearing and consuming our sin, refining our faith, hope, and love.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 51. Judas | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Matthew Coder said that a person might name his son Peter or Paul, and his dog Nero or Caesar—but no one will even name a dog “Judas.” The name is synonymous with the worst form of treachery. For centuries the name has stood for the ultimate evil. At the end of the day, Judas did more than simply betray Jesus. He rejected the greatest possible Light—Christ Himself—and sold his Friend to His enemies. So, then, who was Judas? 50. Holy Week: Managing Expectations | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Every day of Holy Week describes a different aspect of who Jesus was, why he came, and how that’s good news for the world and us. This week we are going to follow Jesus through the events of what has been traditionally called “Holy Week.” Holy meaning set apart as special. And then “week” because there is a week’s worth of events that specifically show the expectations people had for what the Messiah would do, and the reality of the type of Messiah Jesus was.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 49. But...But...But... How God Responds to Our Excuses | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

While Moses held a resume that would equip him to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery into freedom, he initially resisted when God called to him from a burning bush. Excuse after excuse blurted from his lips with a but…but…but list of objections. How do we also resist God’s invitations in our lives? And perhaps even more importantly, how does our good God respond to our excuses? LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 48. The Mercy of God | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

“Lord, have mercy” is the most prayed prayer in the Bible, This prayer, known in liturgical churches as the Kyrie Eleison is a beautiful prayer, but, if the most prayed prayer in the Bible is the prayer for the Lord’s mercy—what is this mercy of God for which we are encouraged to pray? We’ll explore that together this week.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? Listen and subscribe wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts! 47. Being Human | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Labels. We live in a world where the human race is divided up into different categories under various labels--labels that describe our gender, race, color of skin. Labels do help us order and structure the world, but most often they also focus our attention on differences between people. Scripture, however, begins not by noting how human beings are different, but by identifying what we all hold in common. We are all created in the image of God. But what does that mean? And how does this impact the way we treat others? In this episode, the Discover the Word group explores the subject of "Being Human" with author and Old Testament scholar Dr. Amanda Benckhuysen.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 46. Out of the Dark | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

In the Bible, there are quite a few good things that come out of dark places. We often end up “in the dark” in our lives, but God is a God who does his best work “out of the darkness.” Let’s look at darkness in the Bible this week, and discover how God not only brought good things out of darkness in the Bible, but can and will bring good things out of the shadowy places in your life too.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 45. Fishing Tips | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Jesus made it clear that he wants us – you and me – to go into the world and make disciples. We take such a directive seriously because after all, we know the difference knowing Jesus has made in our lives. We desperately want others to find the help and the hope in him that we have. We want our parents, our children, our coworkers and friends to have what we have. In Luke 5, we find a certain “fish story” interaction between Jesus and Peter that provides perspective on the process of faith sharing and just how God works in us and through us as we share our faith with those we love. Then, in 1 and 2 Peter, Peter shares his own well-lived principles for bringing people to Christ and offers certain “fishing tips” for us today. Consider, in these conversations with the Discover the Word group, a song that are the reflections of a person who has lived life, learned, and now shares the experiences that taught him about his God. To that end, we turn to Psalm 18, which takes us to a song that David wrote in his old age as he looked back over the years of God’s faithfulness to him.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 42. What's Love Got to Do With It? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Love. It’s an essential attribute of God and the central theme of the gospel. From Genesis to Revelation God’s unconditional love is the impetus for creation, redemption, and restoration. God’s love is a foundational principle and practice for those who would follow Him. Unfortunately, we can allow other things to distract us from the main thing. In fact, many people don’t think of love at all when they envision followers of Christ. So, to ask the question the pop star Tina Turner raised awhile ago: What’s Love Got to Do With It? We’ll explore and expound on that question and the deep answer: Love Has Everything to Do With It because it is core to who God is, in this Discover the Word Podcast.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 41. Surprise! | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Daniel Ryan Day leads the conversations with Mart and Elisa and Bill about the surprising story of the Old Testament prophet Jonah. Jonah’s primary fear was that a loving God would be gracious to the Ninevites and show them mercy. He did everything he could—including offering to die a few times—to keep from preaching to them. In the middle of 39 Old Testament books that seem almost solely focused on one people group, God worked through Jonah’s obstinance to show mercy, compassion and love to one of Israel’s enemies. Discover some of the significant surprises in the story of Jonah that inform us about God’s love for all nations and that foreshadow the Gospel of Jesus in this concluding episode of this series on the Discover the Word Podcast.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of the Discover the Word Podcast? 39. What Kind of Father Is He? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

In this series of conversations, we want to explore together a moment when Moses was allowed to meet with God in a way that was both overwhelming and instructive. It was overwhelming because God is God. It was instructive because in this meeting God chose to reveal the essence of His nature and character to Moses. 38. That Scripture Might Be Fulfilled | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

Four times in the first two chapters of Matthew the evangelist uses the citation formula, “This happened to fulfill what had been spoken (by the Lord) through the prophet” (Matthew 1:22; 2:14, 17, 23). What is the purpose of these citations? What does Matthew mean by “fulfilled”? What we will discover is that Matthew is not in search of mere messianic “proof texts,” but rather that he engages his Scriptures with the fundamental hermeneutical conviction that Jesus Messiah brings an end to Israel’s exile and thus unlocks the promised blessing for the nations. 36. Growing Pains | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

In the life of a church – from the first century’s to today’s – growing pains are inevitable. We may not embrace this at first – who likes pain of any kind? But in reality, we often grow best through pain, don’t we? Financial pains teach us to manage our money with an eye to God’s directives. Relational pains shape our character. Physical pains develop dependency on God’s provision. And church pains can bring about resiliency, growth in our bodies of believers and outreach to those who don’t yet know Jesus. In Acts 6 we see how God used struggles to grow the church internally as His people and then externally to bring others to know Jesus. How might God do the same in our churches – and in us? The Jewish celebration of Rosh Hashanah (the feast of trumpets) celebrates the launching of a new year, and the blowing of the trumpets signals that fresh start for the calendar. In that celebration, Psalm 47 is read seven times before the trumpets are blown, making it an integral part of anticipating the new year. 32. Lament--The Church in Crisis | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

How does the church respond to times of pain and hardship? Author and professor Soong-Chan Rah explains how Scripture models lament as an appropriate response to the reality of suffering in the world. 31. The Adventure of Advent | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

The word advent means “coming” or “arrival.” For centuries, different churches have created various practices to help prepare hearts, minds, calendars, congregations, families, and individuals to celebrate the coming/arrival of Christ. Through the practice of observing advent and lighting the candles of an advent wreath in the weeks before Christmas, we can look back at how God was faithful to fulfill His promise of a Messiah and then look forward to the promise of Christ's return. Advent helps us trust that since God was faithful in the past, He will be faithful in the future.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of Discover the Word Podcast? 30. Jesus the Priest | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

In the Old Testament era, Israel had three offices: prophet, priest, and king. Of those, the priest had the unique role of representing the people before God. He did this through sacrifices, prayers, care, and more.  If this was what human priests were responsible for in Judah, what does it mean for Jesus—the Lord, Savior, Creator, Son, and Lamb—to be our high priest? We want to explore that idea in this series of conversations. And to do that, we will consider an important portion of Scripture from the book of Hebrews on this Discover the Word Podcast.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of Discover the Word Podcast? 27. What is Worship? | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

What comes to your mind when you hear the word "worship?" Worship is a word we throw around a lot, but it's actually a pretty abstract idea. It's difficult to get our minds around what it is. That's probably why we tend to use the word to simply define a style of music--that's easier than engaging with the mystery that is worship. But the word "worship" shows up in nearly every book of the Bible--200 times from Genesis to Revelation. So, join us this week, as Daniel leads the Discover the Word group in asking the question, "How would Jesus define worship?"   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of Discover the Word Podcast? 24. Finding Our Identity in Christ | Discover the Word Podcast | Presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries

One of the more abstract concepts in the life of faith is that through salvation our identity is now in Christ. Yet when we talk of our identity in Christ, we’re referring to an actual reality—just not a tangible one. We’re talking about a spiritual reality, which may be why it’s so difficult to get our minds around this subject.  This week on Discover the Word, we want to consider together what it means to have our identity in Christ.   LOOKING FOR MORE EPISODES of Discover the Word Podcast? 23. Wild Beasts | Discover the Word

God created the wild beasts as an important part of His very good creation. But when humans took things into their own hands and the world was broken by their fall, the wild beasts became something they were not intended to become—a symbol of the brokenness of creation.  But God never stopped caring about them. In fact, Jesus even emphasized that if God cares about the animals, how much more does He care about you and me! Some of the best Bible studies happen when we notice something we haven’t seen before, and we spend some time following the thread. Daniel Ryan Day says that recently, that happened to him when he was reading an all-to-familiar section in Mark. There he paused at what seemed like a random reference to "wild beasts." But what he discovered as he followed the surprisingly common reference to "wild beasts" throughout Scripture, was how those "wild beasts" point us to Jesus.

21. God in Three Persons | Discover the Word

Think about the hymn “Holy, Holy, Holy,” which calls God’s people to worship and communion with the God who is both accessible and mysterious. The first verse ends with these words: “God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.”   Talk about mystery! The one God who manifests Himself in three distinct persons is beyond our description and beyond our comprehension, yet this is the God who has invited us into relationship with Him. This week, we want to explore some Scriptures that display this three-in-one concept and see what they tell us about our great God.

20. Six Who Made a Difference | Discover the Word

Do our choices really make a difference? Yes! When we carefully—and creatively—invest our love for God, He can do great things through us. Our choices, stacked one upon another like dominoes in a row, influence the events in our lives, in the lives of others, and in our world. In 32 verses in Exodus, we’re introduced to six people, one man and five women, who made a difference simply by investing themselves in the situation before them. One made evil choices with disastrous results and yet even there, God brought about ultimate good. Five others made good choices, one stacked upon another, creating a powerful legacy of influence.

19. God With Us | Week 2 | Discover the Word

Few promises of the Bible offer more reassurance than when God says “I will never leave or forsake you.” Who among us doesn’t want to believe that God is still with us—now? Yes, we see evidence of God in the sky and stars. But here on the ground, we worry. Maybe that’s one reason God asked the huge family that he had rescued from Egypt to camp around His tent in the Wilderness of Sinai. From the outside, this Tent of God’s presence looked more like a portable Bedouin tent than “a house of God.” But on the inside, the detail, color, art, and symbolism spoke of mysteries and secrets, and . . . far more goodness than God was ready to reveal. And still today, even though so much has since been revealed, there’s so much for us to explore together. Please join us in discovering together what that tent in the wilderness says about "God With Us" . . . now.

17. What Does the Bible Say About Justice? | Discover the Word

Justice. What comes to mind when you see or hear that word? We've heard a lot about justice recently, and have so many thoughts, ideas, images, assumptions, and expectations of what justice is and how it works. Understandably, that influences what we think when we read the word justice in the Scriptures. So, this week, the Discover the Word group would like to pause and act as if we've never seen the word before and see how we would define “justice” if we only had the Bible to shape our definition. 15. The Gospel in the Mountains | Week 2 | Discover the Word

In the Bible, there seems to be a love-hate relationship with mountains. It was in the mountains that Israel established “high places” where false gods were worshipped. Yet, it is nonetheless surprising how often mountains are the sites where significant biblical events happened. Here in part 2 of this series of the Discover the Word Podcast, we consider five more of those important and dramatic moments that took place on mountains, and what we can perhaps learn from them.

13. When We Pray Like Jesus | Week 2 | Discover the Word

Most of us find prayer baffling. Sometimes even unsatisfying. At the heart of our struggle is a kind of tug-of-war between what we want and what God wants. We have certain “prayer problems.” In one of the most desperate moments of His life, Jesus prayed a specific prayer. A prayer contained in three gospels and mentioned in the fourth. “Take this cup, yet not my will.” A two-sided prayer coin. Take this cup: Honest. Not my will: Abandon. Join us as we consider how Jesus flipped back and forth in this two-sided prayer coin, and how, following His example, perhaps we can as well.

11. Wait for It... | Discover the Word

Let’s be real. Modern culture is not a patient culture. We don’t like to wait for anything, and we’ve come up with just about every shortcut we can think of to get things done or in our possession more quickly. Henri Nouwen wrote, “Most people consider waiting a waste of time.” Maybe that’s why we pull out our phones at a red light or while in line. Yet the story of the Bible could be described as a story of waiting. The word “wait” shows up at least 119 times in the Bible. And so we wait. In a broken world, in broken bodies, we wait. But the good news is that the Bible is filled with hope for those who wait on the Lord. Join the group this week, as Daniel takes us to verses about waiting, and helps us discover that waiting is not necessarily a waste of time.

10. When Crisis Strikes | Discover the Word

A crisis has been defined as any event that is going to lead to an unstable and dangerous situation affecting an individual, group, community, or whole society. One teacher described a crisis more personally as any event or circumstance that makes you fundamentally reorganize your life. Either way, crises shake us to our core. In Psalm 34, the psalmist (David) is facing a time of crisis, and offers wisdom about living confidently by faith in seasons of crisis. We consider it together this week on Discover the Word.

One of the tried and tested ways we learn is through repetition. Whether it’s multiplication tables, grammar rules, or other languages, repetition helps to embed important ideas in our minds. The same is true with the most important ideas of all—those presented in the Scriptures. So, when we read Habakkuk 2:4, the fact that it’s repeated no less than three times in the New Testament should grab our attention. This week on Discover the Word, we discuss this important text and how it helps our understanding of the gospel.

Through the New Testament epistles especially, the metaphor of “dressing up” takes on a special significance, directing us to express our internal faith in external efforts, the way we “put on” certain items of clothing.
