Christian rock act Hillsong United can fill arenas around the world, yet the Australian band is still mostly unknown outside worship circles. That may change with the release this week of "Let Hope Rise," a feature documentary on the group's two-decade career.

Ep. 81: It's the Dad Rock Quiz Show!
Music is no trivial matter. That's why our first-ever test of musical knowledge is called it a "quiz show" instead of trivia.
Lost Rhino Brewing Co. in Ashburn, Va., hosted our event, and contestants signed up at the venue. In unrecorded preliminary rounds, we whittled a field of 16 down to eight.
Then we turned the mics on, and the real fun began. Those eight contestants faced each other one-on-one, bracket-style, and won fabulous box sets, brewery gift cards and other prizes.
The ultimate champion (we won't reveal that person here; you need to listen) also was awarded the coveted Dad Rock custom mixtape!

Tuesdays With(out) Mary: Remembering The BusBoys
USA TODAY colleague Jeff Dionise returns to the Dad Rock studio to discuss a band he feels never got the respect it deserves. The BusBoys mixed rock, funk, soul and new wave to create an electrifying sound that blew the roof off concert venues in the early '80s. But what makes the band even more compelling was its wickedly witty commentary on race.
The BusBoys found champions in the Rolling Stones and Eddie Murphy, but aside from "The Boys are Back in Town" and a couple of other minor hits, they never had much chart success. Perhaps that's because their sound didn't fit neatly into any radio format at the time.
Jeff fills in for Mary Nahorniak, who normally joins Dad Rock on Tuesdays but is out on maternity leave.

This is some of the coolest rock and pop you'll hear, championed several years ago by David Byrne, born out of political strife. And it shows that Brazilian music is much more than "The Girl From Ipanema" (although that's a pretty chill song too, we must admit).

Ep. 76: Sarah Jarosz in studio
Sarah Jarosz has gone from teenage bluegrass prodigy to established folk/Americana act. Her mastery of the mandolin, guitar and banjo is well-known, especially among fans of acoustic music, and her songwriting has earned her a loyal — and growing — fan base. In recent years, she has performed multiple times on "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Austin City Limits."
She is touring the USA and UK this year in support of her fourth album "Undercurrent."
Sarah stopped by for an interview, which became even more "dad rock" with special guest co-host Mackenzie Lenahan, Jim's 16-year-old daughter, filling in for Patrick.

Ep. 64 - Dash Rip Rock's Bill Davis in studio
Dash Rip Rock has been dashing across the USA and ripping up stages with high-powered rock 'n roll for 30+ years. While the band has developed a devoted (almost cultish) following, its mix of punk, rockabilly, country, alternative and Southern rock has never quite found a place in mainstream music. That's too bad, because to hear Dash is to hear the soul of rock 'n' roll.
On this episode of Dad Rock, cohosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan sit down with Bill Davis, leader of Dash Rip Rock. He discusses the band's ups and downs, his guitar influences, his use of humor in music and Dash's induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Road Trip - Day Six recap: Dallas
Dad Rock is on the road, headed to South By Southwest in a vintage Airstream!
Day Six brought unexpected pleasures. We went to the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, met up with Gavin Mulloy, who showed us an amazing new concert venue called The Bomb Factory and took us to another spot called Trees to see a metal mariachi band (named Metalachi, of course). Oh, and we met Kanye West's cousin. That's the World Famous Tony Williams, a recording artist in his own right. Texas Forever!

Road Trip Special - Big Star's Jody Stephens
Jody Stephens is the last surviving member of Big Star, a beloved rock band whose influence is legendary. Though the band failed to sell many albums in the 1970s, Big Star experienced a revival in interest after such artists as R.E.M., the Replacements and Teenage Fanclub paid tribute in the '80s and '90s. The three Big Star albums are now in every serious rock fan's collection.
While Dad Rock is on the road, we stopped at the famous Ardent Studios in Memphis to talk with Stephens (he manages the studios today) about Big Star, Ardent's 50th anniversary and his new musical project, Those Pretty Wrongs (with Luther Russell).

Bonus Track - Damone of 'Fast Times'
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" is a classic movie with a rock 'n' roll sensibility (and soundtrack). With the Oscars approaching, Dad Rock hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan dedicate a Bonus Track to the 1982 film, one of their favorites, and interview Bob Romanus, who portrayed Mike Damone. "The Dream Police, da-da-da-da-da-da-da."
Romanus is also a musician and plays in a few Los Angeles bands. His primary musical outlet is Poppa's Kitchen, a two-piece group (with Steve Feldman) that has recorded eight albums.

Ep. 52 - The Who's photographer William Snyder
A longtime fan of The Who, William Snyder photographed Pete Townshend in 1993, when the songwriter and guitarist was overseeing the Broadway production of his rock opera 'Tommy.' That led to a long relationship in which Snyder has toured with The Who and gained extensive access to the band, on stage and off.
Snyder visited Dad Rock to talk with hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan about the time he has spent with The Who.

Ep. 50 - Let's rock 'n' roll with the Ramones
The Ramones' hugely important self-titled debut album was recorded 40 years ago this month.
Mixing stripped-down, loud, fast rock 'n' roll with catchy pop melodies and sometimes a twisted sense of humor, the Ramones launched a punk rock revolution and inspired countless bands. Much of today's rock can be traced back to the template the Ramones created.
On this Dad Rock episode, hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan are joined by Doug Hoepker to discuss the Ramones' career. Hoepker produces Little Records, a "podcast tribute to old-school college rock." His show's mixes cover alternative music from the late '70s through the early '90s.

Ep. 46 - Get to know White Reaper (power pop!)
White Reaper is a young band that's Dad Rock-approved. With tight, hooky songs, this Louisville quartet produces a sound that touches on late-'70s power pop and '60s garage rock.
Jim Lenahan and guest co-host John Geddes sat down for an in-studio interview with White Reaper. They discuss their love of short songs (and short sets) as well as life on the road (including a basement filled with trash). They also each picked a song by another artist that has been highly influential (just wait until you hear this diverse mix).

Bonus Track - Rock your kids to sleep
The "Rockabye Baby!" series of albums have been putting kids to sleep for 10 years. And that's a good thing. The brainchild of Lisa Roth, a vice president at CMH Label Group, these tunes are "lullaby renditions of baby's favorite rock bands." So Dad (and Mom) can enjoy some Radiohead or U2 melodies while the kiddo nods off.
Roth, who is also the sister of a famous rock star, joins Dad Rock hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan via phone for this Bonus Track.

Ep. 23 - Bat Out of Hell
'Bat Out of Hell' by Meat Loaf, released in 1977, struck a chord with tales of teen lust and frustration and spawned hit songs in 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad' and 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light.' It went on to sell 14 million copies.
The album is also a favorite of Greg Wilson, friend of Dad Rock co-host Patrick Foster. Wilson joins Foster and Jim Lenahan in the studio to remember what it was like to discover the record while actually an emotional teenager.
This week, Dad Rock is glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife.

Ep. 20 - Get to know Hop Along & their diverse influences
Emerging indie band Hop Along is an act you need to know. Dad Rock-approved. Intelligent story-songs, emotive singing, jangly guitars, driving beats — it all makes for an immediately appealing sound. But further listening brings new textures and subtleties to the surface.
Hop Along's Frances Quinlan and Mark Quinlan sit down with Dad Rock hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan in this episode. They talk about their own music, and we also play songs that have inspired them, from Bob Dylan, Nirvana and more.
Hop Along's latest release is "Painted Shut," released in May on Saddle Creek Records. They recently completed a tour with the War on Drugs and will be appearing at festivals across the USA in the fall.

Ep. 19, First Set - Deadheads
The Grateful Dead just got the band back together for a few final gigs, 20 years after their last shows (and the death of Jerry Garcia) and 50 years after forming in psychedelic San Francisco. To mark the occasion, Dad Rock invited a couple of true Deadheads, each with about 100 shows attended, to discuss the long, strange trip.
The conversation ran long (kind of like a Dead show), so we broke this episode into two sets (also like a Dead show). The Second Set posts on Friday, July 3.

Ep. 7 - R.E.M. (The I.R.S. years)
R.E.M. recorded an incredible five studio albums, one EP and an outtakes record, all while touring constantly from 1982 to '87. The sound was fresh and exciting, quirky and intricate. Anyone who was in college at the time, especially, might fondly recall time spent by the turntable, trying to decipher Michael Stipe's obtuse lyrics.
This Dad Rock episode is so important to co-hosts Patrick Foster and Jim Lenahan that they brought in a guest: fellow R.E.M. fanatic Justin Gay.
Enjoy the discussion of southern gothic tones and murky mumbles. Come on aboard, we promise you it won't hurt the horse. ... There's lots of room for you on the bandwagon.

Ep. 6 - What the kids are into
Any parent who digs music likes to think that he will impart incredible musical taste onto the kids. On this week's USA TODAY Dad Rock podcast, we put that theory to the test; co-host Jim Lenahan's two children join in studio to play their favorite songs and discuss how they relate to their dad's music.
