The Greatest Corvette Story Ever Told (Camoradi #4)

The following episode focuses on the amazing history of the Camoradi #4 Corvette that finished 10th in the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans. The panel consisted of Richard Prince, author and official photographer for the GM Corvette Race Team; Dominic Testa, owner of the car; Chuck Schroedel, who was a member of the Camoradi team at Le Mans in 1960; and a special guest appearance by Laura Klauser, the GM Sports Car Racing Program Manager. Each member of the panel gave their insight into the history of the car, while Chuck’s commentary from actually “being there” in ’60 was especially memorable. Ms. Klauser ended the presentation by taking us from Corvette racing in 1960 to the 2024 Corvette Racing programs competing not only in the United States, but in race series around the world. Join us for PART 2 of "Cup Races that lead to American Road Racing!" The Gordon Bennett Cup: 1900-1905 (Dr. Pál Négyesi)

Join us for PART 1 of "Cup Races that lead to American Road Racing!" The Gordon Bennett Cup, held for cars between 1900 and 1905 was the first international racing series. Stemming from an idea by American newspaper magnate, James Gordon Bennett Jr., the Gordon Bennett Cup was set to champion the international auto industry – by allowing national automobile clubs representing France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, the United States and Italy to nominate three entries each. Naturally with the growth of the industry, it became more and more difficult  to find the most suitable candidates. By 1905 the industry became so diverse that it was impossible to hold onto the rules of the Cup, so from 1906 the era of the Grand Prix started. This presentation will provide a short overview of each race, a look at the most important racers and their cars. Dr. Pál Négyesi is an award-winning automotive historian, publisher, editor and museum professional. He is currently the editor of Rare & Unique Vehicles magazine, which won the 2022 Richard Brigham Award from the Society of Automotive Historians, a consultant to the Institute for Digital Culture at the University of Leicester and a lecturer at the Óbuda University in Hungary. Over the years he authored many different books on the history of the Hungarian motoring industry. He’s also been the publisher of such books as Thomas Ulrich’s 1902 DeDietrich & The Paris-Vienna Race and Alles Mit Motor – Die Standard/Gutbrod Story, which won the 2023 Cugnot Award for books in language other than English from the SAH. He’s also an advisor to private collectors and museums in Hungary, Germany and The Netherlands. Rob Dyson's reflections on Watkins Glen at 75

Rob Dyson is a New York based businessman and retired professional racing driver with a long association with Watkins Glen International and the International Motor Racing Research Center. Following completion of his licensing school at Watkins Glen in 1974, Dyson began competing in amateur SCCA competition. In 1981 he won the Sports Car Club of America’s GT2 national championship. Dyson began racing professionally in IMSA GTO and the SCCA Trans-Am Series in 1982. The following year, to support his professional racing efforts, Dyson founded the Dyson Racing Team, which over the next few years grew to be one of America’s premier sports car racing teams. From it base in Poughkeepsie, over the course of nearly four decades the team won 19 championships, 72 race victories, started 72 times from the pole and achieved 224 podium finishes. Among the team’s notable accomplishments is a pair of overall victories in America’s premier endurance race, the Rolex 24, at Daytona International Speedway. The team fielded cars during the heyday of the IMSA Camel GT, winning its first time out with a Porsche 962 at Lime Rock Park. Under Dyson’s leadership the team went on to successfully field entries in Indy car, the World Sports Car Championship, the United States Road Racing Championship, the American Le Mans Series (where the team scored two championships), the Rolex Sports Car Series, and the Pirelli World Challenge, where the team scored Bentley’s first-ever North American race victory. During his 21 seasons as a professional racing driver Dyson drove in 92 races, scoring four overall race wins (including the 1997 Rolex 24 at Daytona) and a total of 18 podium finishes. Dyson continued to compete episodically in professional racing through 2007 and today remains active driving his collection of vintage Indy cars in a variety of demonstration events. Dyson’s personal historic Indy car collection ranges from a 1913 Isotta Fraschini tipo IM  to Johnny Rutherford’s 1978 Budweiser McLaren M24B, and includes the 1961 Kimberly Cooper Climax, the first successful rear-engine car to compete in the 500. Named chairman of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 2021 following a decade as a member of the board, Dyson is guiding the institution through its $89 million transformational renovation as it charts its future path as the repository of the history and related artifacts of America’s oldest active and most storied racing facility. In 2011 Dyson donated to the IMRRC the historic archives of National Speed Sport News, America’s premier motorsports news publication since the late 1930s. Dyson is the chairman and chief executive officer of Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a privately-owned international holding company. Argento e Rosso: An Alternative Story of the Mid-Engine Revolution

Dr. Karl-Heinz Mertins holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and a doctorate degree in mechatronics/ag engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany. He has over 35 years of engineering and business experience in Europe and the United States, with focus on product innovation and new business incubation, using cross-disciplinary methods and cross-cultural sensitivities. His work includes experimental work on intelligent mobile equipment and wind energy systems at the Corporate Engineering Division of Deere & Company. His enthusiasm for F1 began in the year 1961. Mertins presents a “what if” story: What if Robert Eberan von Eberhorst in 1953 would have joined the newly formed Unione Automobili instead of an Auto Union that was only a shadow of its former self? What if Francesco De Virgilio and Ettore Zaccone Mina had been tasked with designing a compact V6 engine for the 2.5-liter GP formula that could take on a rather conventional Mercedes W196? What if Josef Mickl’s aerodynamic knowledge would have been applied to create downforce? Would lessons learned from pre-war Silver Arrows and the untimely Cisitalia Grand Prix project, when blended with elements of Lancia’s passionate engineering culture, have accelerated the rear-engine revolution in F1? The Last Lap - The Mysterious Death of Peter Kreis

The possibility of drivers dying by suicide on the track has long been acknowledged, sometimes alleged, but seldom proven. It remains a forbidden topic, because drivers are unwilling to admit any weakness, much less depression. The case of Pete Kreis, however, offers an opportunity to examine a case which resulted in two purposeful deaths at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pete raced at Indy from 1925 to 1934, when he and his riding mechanic died in Turn One. A “coroners’ jury” of Indy drivers, track officials, and other experts could not identify any obvious cause for the accident, calling it “the strangest death in all racing history.” After 50 years of research, Walker reached the conclusion that Pete took his own life. The results of his investigation were published in The Last Lap: The Mysterious Demise of Pete Kreis in the Indianapolis 500 (Octane Press, 2023). A long-time fan of open-wheel racing, William T. Walker Jr. was introduced to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 by the broadcasts of Sid Collins. He grew fascinated by the careers of his cousins Pete Kreis and Rex Mays, both Indy drivers. He earned his BA and MA from the University of Virginia. After teaching at Lamar University and the University of New Orleans, he served as associate vice president at Virginia Tech, Gettysburg College, and William & Mary. Since retiring, Walker has returned to an enduring love — researching and writing narrative history books. His first book was Betrayal at Little Gibraltar, a study of a World War I battle published by Scribner in 2016, followed by The Last Lap, the story of the fast lap and strange death of Pete Kreis.  ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

Drive Thru News #48 - Boun Ferragosto!

Ferragosto is a public holiday celebrated on 15 August in all of Italy. It originates from Feriae Augusti, the festival of Emperor Augustus, who made August 1st a day of rest after weeks of hard work in the agricultural sector. McPherson College, from a Student's perspective (Jeremy Porter)

(Part 3) Jeremy Porter, from Seneca Falls, NY, is a senior studying automotive restoration technology at McPherson College in Kansas. First bitten by the car bug at the age of five after attending the Vintage Festival at Watkins Glen, he is fascinated by the mechanical aspects of vehicles and other machinery. He was a part of the team that restored the school’s 1953 Mercedes Benz 300S Cabriolet that finished second in class at Pebble Beach. His interests include vintage Ferraris, pre-war Bugattis and Alfas, open-wheel race cars, and the development of technologies within the drivetrain. As a student of the Automotive Restoration program at McPherson College, a four-year degree that centers the skills needed for the preservation and/or restoration of the vehicle itself and its associated history, a younger generation is given the chance to take the torch. Hands-on skills such as engine rebuilding and general mechanical work are supplemented by a dive into proper research methods, archival building/handling, general history of automobiles and their artistic and technological designs, along with literature courses that help create a unique liberal arts education. Using an example of a current project involving the digitization and creation of an archive of original Duesenberg road car, racing car, and marine engine blueprints that are housed within the school’s library, this presentation will show how the curriculum at McPherson College culminates in a comprehensive educational experience. This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family - and was recorded in front of a live studio audience. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

Get to know McPherson College's Auto Restoration Program (Ken Yohn & Kristie Sojka)

The Automotive Restoration Technology program at McPherson College was established in 1976, and since its inception the curriculum has included the study of the technical and social history of the automobile. Given this experience, Yohn addresses how McPherson might inform teaching the specialized field of motor racing. He will begin by giving an overview of the McPherson automotive history curriculum and conclusions about substantive content choices and best teaching practices. By examining the comparative scope of automotive history and motor racing history, Yohn will present areas of substantial overlap and differentiation. Finally, he will present suggestions for curriculum and teaching practices. Participants will be requested to share their reflections on the following question: What 3 key topics should every motor racing historian understand? (Part 1) Ken Yohn is a social scientist keenly interested in how the automobile shapes our lives. With a Ph.D. in political science and postdoctoral work in history and economics, Yohn has held faculty positions at universities in Japan, Germany, France, and Poland, including a sabbatical as scholar in residence at the University of Science and Technology in Lille, France. For the past 25 years Yohn has been teaching at McPherson College in Kansas, where he is currently chair of the history and politics department. (Part 2) Kristie Sojka earned her BA in History from Wichita State University and her MLIS from Kent State University. She has worked in a variety of roles in Kansas libraries for the past 13 years. Sojka is currently entering her third year as the director of library services at Miller Library McPherson College. Her responsibilities include providing library and research services, support, and instruction to the entire campus  community. She also oversees the two special collections located within Miller Library: the Brethren and College Archives and the Paul Russell and Company Center for Automotive Research, which houses the special automotive materials collection. Sojka is currently serving as vice president of the College and University Libraries Section of the Kansas Library Association. The Paul Russell and Company Center for Automotive Research housed within Miller Library at McPherson College currently holds over 5,000 automotive related titles. This presentation will consider the benefits and challenges of curating a special library collection and archives, which supports automotive restoration education. The presenter will discuss the types of materials currently available to researchers, the varying processes of obtaining materials, and options for organizing the collection. What Should I Buy? - Porsches or Corvettes? (Part-2)

When we talk about Porsche rivalries there’s always one that jumps immediately to the surface. Do you choose the technologically savvy space-aged Porsche 959 or the raw and exhilarating passion of the Ferrari F40? But for those of us “everyday enthusiasts” with more modest budgets those aren’t the kinds of cars we’re interested in collecting. Picking up from our previous What Should I Buy? episode, we looked at the Corvette as the natural rival to the 911 as “thee” every man’s sports car. And in this episode we’re going to focus on the 60 years of 911. We’re joined by Don Weberg (Wee-berg) from Garage Style Magazine, along with William “Big Money” Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace, and Ryan Bahrke formerly of the Steering Committee Podcast, now part of the Road Show Pod, along with David Middleton former race engineer at the Nürburgring and president of MIE Racing. Then there’s Mark Shank, our resident ‘90s expert and defacto Bring a Trailer data cruncher.  And like all What Should I Buy (WSIB) episodes… we have some shopping criteria. So get ready folks, it’s time to slick back your hair, press your paisley button down, lace up those oxfords and loosen up your checkbooks, because we’re shopping for 911s! And in this episode our panel of extraordinary petrol-heads are challenged to find our “first time collector” something that will make their friends go “YA, DAS IST GUT” at the next Cars & Coffee. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

Pit Stop: Remembering Howard Purdy & The Deuce

When Howard Purdy and Bob Hodgson chalked out the frame for the Purdy Deuce on the floor of his parent’s home in 1964, little did they know that the car would be one of the dominant cars to compete at the famed Oswego Speedway from the mid 1960’s thru 1974…as well as ultimately become one of the most iconic supermodifieds in the history of the sport. The car debuted late in the 1964 season but was plagued by “new car” issues. The 1965 season however was a revelation as driver, Ron Lux, won 5 features in a row and 12 of the 16 races held, easily winning the track title. In several of those wins, Lux used an alias as he was afraid of losing his USAC sprint car license. That year, the car also made its first – and only – race ever on dirt, racing in the National Open at the Williams Grove Speedway. Lux was running 5 th when he hit a rut and spun out. Sadly, Lux was fatally injured in a sprint car crash in July 1966 in Tulsa. The winter before he died, Lux had suggested a young, New England driver, Bentley Warren as a candidate for the ride. Purdy wanted a more experienced driver, but after trying several veterans with no success, he put Warren in the car. Warren drove the car from 1966 – 1969, winning 7 features in that span, including the 1969 International Classic, the biggest race of the year. Canadian Warren Coniam was behind the wheel in ’70 and ’71 winning 2 features and the final driver was the late Jimmy Winks, who won 5 features including the car’s final race in 1974. Small block and big block injected Chevy motors have powered the car over the years. The current restoration carries a 1960’s small block Chevy. In its time at Oswego The Deuce racked up 25 wins – 11 seconds – 5 thirds with 1 track championship and 1 win in the International Classic. The car was competitive throughout the eras of upright supers, the sleeker, Indy roadster style bodies, and even when rear engine supers were running.

Oswego Supermodifieds a Legacy of Speed at the Steel Palace

The Oswego Speedway, located in Oswego New York, was built in 1951 when original owners Harry, George and William Caruso converted the one time Wine Creek Horse Track into a 3/8 mile dirt auto racing facility. The track was paved during 1952 and remained a 3/8 mile track until 1961 when it was enlarged to its current 5/8 mile size. The Oswego Speedway has been a continuously run weekly race track since it opened in August of 1951. Dick O’Brien former Public Relations & Track Manager at Oswego Speedway kicked off this IMRRC Center Conversation about the history of Super Modified racing. He spent over 40 years in Motorsports and spoke to the early history of the track how it has significantly evolved this discipline of racing. Following his presentation, Drivers from Oswego’s over 70 year history were invited on stage: Bentley Warren, Warren Coniam, Eddie and Brandon Bellinger, Alison Sload (the only woman to win a supermodified feature), Otto Sitterly, Dave Danzer, and car owner/promoter John Nicotra answered a wide variety of questions posed to them by “The voice of Oswego Speedway”, Roy Sova. Enjoy this funny and insightful view of how Oswego and supermodified racing has been a major influence in their racing careers. What Should I Buy? - Corvettes or Porsches? (Part-1)

There are so many automotive rivalries: Ford v Ferrari, Honda v Volkswagen, Chevy v Ford, and the list goes on and on. But there is an extra special one in the sports car and motorsports world, Porsche versus Corvette, both of which recently celebrated their respective 75th and 70th birthdays. And after all this time, is it possible to agree on whether or not the 911 or the Corvette is “thee” every man's sports car. So which is it? Hydrogen Trucks Through The Lens of a 9 Year Old

Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. On his show he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, motoring travel. Jerry Reed - East Bound and Down J & Son attend the opening of the world’s first big rig hydrogen station, with associated government and electric truck razzamatazz The Press Conference and a digression on nomenclature What colour is “pickle”? An existential discussion The First Element dude The Carb Lady The Hyundai dude (with the waistcoat that rode up) A Good Question from the LA Times; how clean is the wrap around technology? The Cummins rep and people who leave the rock show before the encore is over J’s digression on getting stuck in muddy car parks at Silverstone, and sleeping in the company Vectra O’s digression on his favorite car - Texaco/Havoline Porsche 962 and Joe’s Soft Serve “The Science Bit”, which J didn’t understand “A dude with a beard and no hair…..and a bunch of pipes in a shipping container” O operates the Actual Gas Pump for Hydrogen O mocks his father’s skills with Podcastle True Zero Hyundai Nikola - which requires a different pump attachment to “hydrogen up” J chat’s with Hyundai rep: “why now?”  Hydrogen is not competing with Diesel, rather with BEVs for last mile/fixed routes, because -  400-500 miles range (diesel trucks might do 800/day) Better Payload Faster refueling Better vs. natural disasters The hydrogen station as a single point of failure; may work for some fleet applications, but not right for over the road owner driver truckers Visual bait and switch - looks like a cabover sleeper truck, but actually what looks like the sleeper hides the hydrogen tanks/. Which “look like missiles”. “If California is to meet it’s zero emissions goal in 2046, hydrogen must be part of the solution” So how fully baked is this? J was less convinced after a drive around the Port of Oakland and chatting with real truckers O reviews the two trucks; Nikola seemed far more wholistic, next generational design, while the Hyundai felt more of the parts bin special it is. The game changer of one pedal driving; O feels he could drive it, J feels we are very close to autonomy The challenge is clearly around the delivery of hydrogen, not the trucks J feels soon the smell and noise of diesel will soon be like cigarette smoke in bars - recently gone, and already forgotten Rainbow - Man On The Silver Mountain ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

When Television turned its gaze on Motorsports (Preston Lerner)

Preston Lerner is a freelance writer who has covered racing for the past four decades. For many years, he was a regular contributor to Automobile Magazine and Road & Track. Lerner is also the author or co-author of six books, most recently Shelby American: The Renegades Who Built the Cars, Won the Races, and Lived the Legend. The material used in “Television Turns Its Gaze on Motorsports” is drawn from his upcoming book, The Deadliest Decade, which examines the safety, commercial and technological developments that transformed racing from 1964 to 1973. Lerner’s presentation covers the early – and often controversial – efforts of TV to bring automobile racing into American living rooms. In 1961, a segment from the Indianapolis 500 time trials was broadcast as part of ABC’s new Wide World of Sports program. During the next few years, racing coverage was expanded to include Formula 1, Le Mans, NASCAR and even USAC dirt-track races. Television dramatically expanded the reach of the sport, which, in turn, attracted major commercial sponsors. By the 1970s, racing had been transformed into the global commercial engine we know today. Yet from the beginning, enthusiasts had a love-hate relationship with ABC. On one hand, TV coverage confirmed that racing was a legitimate sport rather than a tawdry carnival sideshow. On the other, serious fans found the broadcasts puerile and sensationalistic. The camerawork was shaky, the commentary insipid and the focus on accidents infamously morbid. Coverage of the fatal wrecks of Lorenzo Bandini and Roger Williamson inspired widespread disgust that led to improvements in safety. This was an unintended consequence, but it was a product largely of television’s unblinking eye.

Blind Logic - The Ralph R. Teetor Story

Born in Hagerstown, Indiana, in 1890, Ralph Teetor had normal vision until one day, his hand slipped while working with a knife. The blade penetrated his eye and within a year, he was completely blind. However, Teetor never let his condition define him. He quickly developed a highly refined sense of touch; a trait that would benefit him greatly throughout his career.  In 1945, automotive engineer Ralph Teetor was responsible for creating the technology we now know as Cruise Control – one of the first steps towards autonomous vehicles. He accomplished this and many other innovations without the benefit of sight. An overview of Motorsports Podcasts focused on Women (by Mike Stocz)

Modern technologies have expanded our ability to share a wide variety of interests. Motorsport, primarily focusing on women in motorsport, has found social media as a medium to help grow actual participation numbers. Expanding on this theory, while also taking into consideration a later discussion on modern archival methods, this presentation will overview how podcasts surrounding women in motorsport are self-presenting to the public at large. In particular, a thematic analysis of women in motorsport show descriptions, and episode descriptions, will be explored, with themes and expanded research discussed. Mike Stocz is the assistant director for the department of kinesiology, and a senior lecturer of sport management & eadership, at the University of New Hampshire. He is one of the founding members and editor in chief of the Journal of Motorsport Culture & History. Mike’s recent works have included a co-authored book chapter about the future of Formula 1, as well as works surrounding big game hunting legislation on land preserves, an economic funding model for college athletics, and critiques on K-12 coaching certifications surrounding sexual assault. Formula A: The SCCA’s Gift to the World

In the late 60’s New Zealand Motor Racing found itself in a bind. A few years earlier the Tasman Formula had been written to keep the local fleet of older 2.5-litre ex F1 cars in play. But now the more modern Formula 2, and even a few of the National Formula 1600 cc cars, were embarrassing the older ones. Visiting cars from Europe were either bigger engined ex 1.5-litre F1  cars, or new designs for the upcoming 3-litre F1 with capacity reduced engines, leaving Motor Sport New Zealand with a dilemma.  Whichever way you looked at it, it was going to be expensive. The SCCA appears have come to the same conclusion, with a 1967 amendment to their Formula A allowing Stock Block engines. The gate was open for others to do the same. At the last SCCA race of 1968 SCCA teams were approached, by a New Zealand delegation, to demonstrate their cars in New Zealand. Four teams took up the challenge, and the Kiwi’s liked the look of it. Within the year Formula A was a main stream category with Championships for it unfolding in Europe, South Africa, and the Tasman Countries. This presentation looks at the nitty gritty of that first Kiwi Formula A race, as seen through the eyes of this presenter in 1968. Trevor Lister holds Degrees from the University of Canterbury in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. On graduation he joined the New Zealand Ministry of Transport, setting and administrating Automotive Safety Standards. This included standards and protocols for the use of gaseous fuels (CNG and LPG) in motor vehicles. He has served as the New Zealand delegate to the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles. This led to Consultancy in South Est Asia and South America. He has built and raced competition cars as well as served as a safety scrutineer for Motor Sport New Zealand and occasionally as Clerk of Course for motorsport events. Now retired from active racing he serves as Editor for the Newsletters of the Classic Motor Racing Club of New Zealand. The Reinvention of the Mille Miglia in 1940

Paul Baxa is professor of history at Ave Maria University in Florida. Parts of his most recent book, Motorsport and Fascism: Living Dangerously (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) have been presented at past Argetsinger Symposia. He was privileged to have presented at the first symposium in 2015. The 1940 Mille Miglia is an anomaly in the long history of the race. The previous classic editions, held between 1927 and 1938, were run on the thousand-mile figure-of-eight open road course covering half of Italy. During that time, it had become Italy’s most  important motor race and one that was exploited by Mussolini’s Fascist regime. After a major tragedy in 1938, the race was reinvented in 1940 and bore scant resemblance to the original. This paper examines how the race was used by the regime to exalt the Axis alliance while at the same time making great efforts to link it to its more illustrious preceding editions.
