Let's talk about it - Aunty Di, we stand with you
Last Week, comments by Frank Hester, a long term Millionaire Tory Donor surfaced in which he called for Diane Abbot MP to be shot and stated that seeing her on television, made him want to hate all Black Women. We, along with many others, were infuriated by his comments but also deeply hurt that Frank Hester’s views are all too common and that this episode is not a new experience or a “one off” occurrence for us as Black Women.
In this episode, Chan and Nats sit down to talk about how these comments about Diane Abbott MP, the first black woman to be elected as a member of parliament in 1986, have impacted us and how we move forward when we are dealing with Frank Hesters in our working environment. We stand by Diane Abbott MP and all other Black Women that face racism in the workplace and in their daily lives and provide support for each other when figuring out how to continuing working and showing up as our authentic selves in light of such regular occurrences.

EP33 - Find Your Passion Sis
Are you a rat on the wheel who needs a break? Need something that makes your existence fulfilling outside of your employment? You are not in solo company. The BWW team talk about how finding and developing pursuits outside of our work have enriched and expanded us, and how sometimes that has fed into our professional work. We know it’s not easy - the older we get, the more “Adulting” puts it’s hard hand on our shoulder, and the “pressure is getting worser”. But also can we discuss how finding your passion doesn't mean you need to turn it into a business? Sometimes just do things for enjoyment and personal nourishment, nothing else. Don’t let the hustle/boss babe culture that prevails on social media pressure you to make draining decisions. Heather Smalls sang, “What have you done today to make you feel proud?” - maybe that’s where it starts. Asking yourself that every day.

Some of the things you might need to consider and that we discuss are: Do you need to be involved in anything? What might the benefits be to your career or developing work relationships? Do they have to be serious pursuits? We chop all of that up, speak to any we've been involved in, and the best ways to measure the utility of your contribution.

Let's Talk About It - For the girls that look like me
In this episode, Natalie and Chantelle discuss the over-scrutiny of black women at work and the undermining of our achievements.
Our conversation is fuelled by the current media commentary on American basketball player, Angel Reese. Sadly, the headlines have not focussed on her achievement of being named outstanding player on the tournament or the fact that this is the first time her team, the LSU Tigers won the tournament for the first time. Angel Reese has been topic of conversation, criticised for her conduct on the court, notably with a lack of comparison to her peers.
As always, with Black women we stand and we want to remind everyone listening, like Angel, just keep being you.

When you become enmeshed in your job that it begins to define you, you also may begin to let it determine your own value.

S7 EP7 - You're Too Much
According to Forbes, men will apply to a job knowing they only meet 60% of the job description. So the question is, are we as black women placing too much emphasis on being 100% 'ready' for a new role, only to be told 'you're overqualified'... you're too much!
The BWW Team approach the topic of how we might be overcompensating perhaps as a response to imposter syndrome and consider the perspective from the other side of the table as a recruiter.
Either way, you're definitely not too much, you are enough, know your worth!
Happy Listening

One of the pillars of our work at The Black Women Podcast is to nurture and protect our physical wellbeing with regards to work and today we are discussing the current conservation about the UK implementing a government workplace policy on menstrual leave. This policy has already been adopted by several countries around the world and instructs employers to increase leave specifically for women when on their period.
With #endowarrior Nicole Marriott, we explore what such a policy would mean for women living with conditions that have an adverse effect on their menstrual cycle, why governments and employers are reluctant to include this policy in the workplace and what we think such a policy should include.

S5 EP8 - The Unconscious Massa
One more time for the people at the back and the front it seems… THIS IS NOT A PLANTATION!
It’s the last episode of the season and we just wanted to share a reminder as we begin to think about our plans for the next year ahead.
In this episode, we are musing over the microaggressive behaviours of managers when it’s time to part ways. From questioning your ability to progress, yet adding impossible tasks to your to-do lists, to complete before you leave, because you’re the only one who can do the job.
Listen sis, hear us queens, always remember who are, what you bring and protect your peace.

LTAI - One Year Since The Black Square
This week the BWWPodcast Team sat down to discuss what it means to be one year on since 'the black square'.
We explore the big question of what the black square meant and means for organisations where the performative nature of the black square stopped at the 'black face' of it, i.e. what we see in the marketing. Is having more black faces in one space, that is a single space, without actually creating a space, that does not facilitate diversity across the organisation and the needs of black people in the workplace enough?
We discuss we way in which we as black people, especially black female influencers, have been on the frontline, of adding diversity to the 'black squares'. In what ways have we helped to make progress or did we put ourselves on the frontline of exploitation?
As with so many of our recent Let's Talk About It segments, we conclude on the message of being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Let's not be disillusioned and stay active in the way you know how.
As always, thank you for staying with us.

Let's Talk About It - Now you see me, now you don't
In this segment of Let's Talk About It, we had to share our thoughts and reflections on Candice Brathwaite being overlooked to present a documentary on the maternal treatment of Black Women in the NHS;
a topic that Candice has documented and campaigned for her entire career.
We question sisterhood at work, activism at work, pigmentocracy and meritocracy.
This is a complex issue with industry information that we are not privy to, but what we know is that Candice was only seen for the purpose of exploitation and if she hadn't shared her truth we would not have seen the entire truth of this story.
With Candice we stand.

Let's Talk About It - The B-Word with Break Concrete Podcast
For this 'Let's Talk About It' we have teamed up with a fellow Black Woman Working, Cheryl-Lyn Bentley of the Break Concrete Podcast. Break Concrete Podcast centres on the experience of Black Women Working in the States and we are discussing the B-Words: British Culture, Black Lives Matter and Burnout for us and in comparison to our stateside sisters.
We chat about how the current events ranging from remote work, coronavirus lockdown, and racial unrest lead to burnout, and how some of these issues are showing up and impacting Black women in the U.S. and the U.K. We also take a look at the difference in work culture between the U.K. and U.S. and Black women professionals can find a happy work life balance.

It's been a while but we are back with a 'let's talk about it' segment and the BWW team are discussing reparations after two large companies announced that they will be allocating a specific budget targeted at BAME initiatives, following the spotlight being on the Slavery Compensation Act amidst the #BlackLivesMatter campaign.

S2 EP8 - Where do we go from here?
First and foremost, thank you for all of your ongoing support and welcome to those who are new to the BWW Podcast.
It's the final episode of the season and we definitely couldn't predict the nature of this conversation. Taking an assessment of current times, we discuss where we are at in our own working lives during quarantine. Importantly for us, we consider the ways in which COVID-19 and the surge of the Black Lives Matter Movement can offer an open for real change moving forward.
As always shout out to our production family at the Selby Centre, can't wait to see you all again.

Should we have to?
What are the ways we do so?
So many questions - tune in and give us a shout to shout out how great you are.

S2 EP 4 - Underrepresentation of black women at work
For all of our discussions on the experience of black women working, we've not hit on the fact that black women are underrepresented in all fields.
We shed light on the barriers that are placed on and maintained by ourselves, and consider the question of whose responsibility it it to ensure that black women are equally represented in the workplace.

S2 EP 3 - Earning More Than Your Man
Episode 3 of the Black Women Working Podcast explores the somewhat controversial topic of 'earning more than your man'. It is an interesting topic as we marry career against the backdrop of stereotypical gender roles.
For the most part, the men of 2020 are grown and see the big picture of our relationship goals - but we offer advice on how we might approach the conversation about our earnings with a partner and what might be some red flags.

S2 EP 2 - Long Term Sickness
Having a long-term illness and living our lives can be a tricky balance to grasp emotionally, practically and financially. As a black woman working, there seems to be a mixed dichotomy between being sick and being perceived as lazy, and in turn we fail to listen to ourselves and tend to ourselves and maintain the 'strong black woman' narrative.
This is such an insightful episode hearing from our guest who has sickle-cell.
